The Rockies hung around for most of Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
Then the seventh inning happened.
Colorado had just pulled within two runs when the Yankees answered with six in the bottom half, capped by Anthony Volpe's grand slam, and turned a quiet, almost competitive game into a 10-3 rout.
The loss completed a three-game sweep and dropped the Rockies to 55-91, while New York improved to 84–62. John Schreiber earned the win for the Yankees, while Ryan Feltner fell to 5-10.
For much of the night, though, the final score did not match the feel of the game. The Yankees grabbed an early lead, but Feltner settled in, Colorado kept finding small openings and New York never quite put the game away.

With the Yankees looking to track down the Rays in the AL East while also maintaining the cushion they have on the Red Sox, this interleague matchup against the Rockies was a couple of must win games. Colorado is closing in on 100 losses and is as beatable an opponent as there is right now, sorry to them. Well so far, so good for the Yankees as they've taken the first two games of the series. Tonight, they'll go for the sweep.
To try and accomplish that sweep, the Yankees will give the ball to Max Fried. This will be Fried's third start since returning from the IL, and he's been decent enough so far, allowing two runs in 9.1 combined innings. He still hasn't gone over 72 pitches yet, so it's still unlikely that he'll be airing it out for 100 or anything tonight, but we'll see.
As for the rest of the lineup, the big news is the return of Anthony Volpe. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. going on the IL, Volpe has been recalled and will play second base. He has been hitting decently since getting sent back to the minors, so we'll see if there's any correlation now that he's back in the bigs. Aaron Judge will get a planned day off, his first since being reinstated from the IL on Tuesday as Aaron Boone will take it slow with his superstar outfielder especially after Judge returned without a rehab ***** ignment. Jasson Domínguez will start in right field instead and bat third, flanked by Cody Bellinger and Luis García Jr.
Meanwhile, Ryan Feltner will take the mound for the Rockies. Feltner has a 5.91 ERA and a 5.27 FIP in his 106.2 innings on the season. The 30-year-old right-hander was having a decent year by Rockies pitchers standards until about mid-July, when a 2.1 inning eight-run disaster outing against Cincinnati ballooned his ERA north of five and he's stayed there ever since. His latest start was a mediocre one, where he lasted five innings and gave up four runs to the Cardinals, but he's got some seven-run outings in recent memory as the Dodgers and Nationals took him to task a couple of weeks ago.
Here's all the information to know on how to catch tonight's action, and we hope you'll come join us in the game thread!

Two games into their September stop at Yankee Stadium, the Rockies have scored four runs, struck out 24 times and lost twice.
The Yankees won the opener 5–3 before taking Game 2 by a 6–1 score.
Tonight gives the Rockies (55–90) one more chance to salvage a game against the Yankees (83–62), avoid the sweep and carry a bit of momentum with them to Detroit.
Ryan Feltner will make his 22nd start in a season that has gone poorly. He is 5–9 with a 5.91 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 106.2 innings.
Feltner leads with his four-seam fastball and varies his secondary mix from there. He works primarily with the slider and changeup against lefties, then turns to the slider, sinker and sweeper against righties. Lefties have produced a .293/.378/.507 line against him this season, while righties are at .275/.326/.522.

ATLANTA (AP) — Michael Harris II hit a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning to lift the Atlanta Braves to a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies, the sixth straight for the National League East leaders.
Brent Suter (2-2) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and picked up his first victory since joining the Braves at the trade deadline. Rookie Didier Fuentes allowed two baserunners in the ninth but retired Jake McCarthy to end the game and pick up his third save.
Harris lifted a fly ball to left center field that was just out of the diving reach of Cole Carrigg and scored Matt Olson from second and Mauricio Dubón from first.
Scheduled Rockies starter Ryan Feltner was scratched Saturday afternoon due to illness and replaced with Zach Agnos as manager Warren Schaeffer went with a bullpen game, using six pitchers. Jaden Hill (0-3) surrendered Harris' double in the eighth.
The Rockies entered the game with an MLB-worst 5.54 team ERA but came within four outs of just their second shutout of the season.

Folks in the District of Columbia were not moved by the opportunity to see two of the National League's struggling teams on a Monday night, as the Colorado Rockies (50-80) and the Washington Nationals (61-71) kicked off their four-game series in front of a sparse crowd of 12,105. Those that did show up got to witness an offensive outburst for the hometown team.
The game started with a strong battle between starters Ryan Feltner and Cade Cavalli. Then — stop me if you've heard this before — one big inning brought the Rockies down. Colorado couldn't claw back into it after a fifth inning full of Nationals hits, Rockies errors, and an Ezequiel Tovar injury that erased their early lead.
The Rockies logged their 50th win back on August 16th. The 51st has proven to be elusive as Colorado's losing streak climbs to a season-high seven straight losses.
Cavalli had built a good bit of momentum through his last few starts. He carried that into the early part of today's game. After giving up a leadoff single to Jake McCarthy, Cavalli got the next three batters out with ***** in play.
The Nationals followed suit and stranded runners of their own in the first. Feltner walked his first batter faced in CJ Abrams, but came right back to strike out Abimelec Ortiz, getting him to chase a changeup outside. Abrams threatened by stealing second before Feltner walked Dylan Crews. The Nationals couldn't do anything from there, as a Daylen Lile line out and a Brady House grounder left runners on first and second.

WASHINGTON (AP) — CJ Abrams had the go-ahead RBI in a five-run fifth inning, Cade Cavalli won his fourth consecutive start and the Washington Nationals defeated Colorado 13-3 on Monday night to send the Rockies to their season-worst seventh consecutive loss.
Daylen Lile homered and drove in five runs for the Nationals, who had dropped three games in a row and seven of eight.
Willi Castro and Ezequiel Tovar homered for Colorado.
After going hitless for the first four innings against Rockies starter Ryan Feltner (5-8), the Nationals opened the fifth with two singles. Nasim Nuñez then laid down a sacrifice bunt toward third that Castro threw down the right-field line for an error, allowing two runs to score.
Abrams laced a double to right to drive in Nuñez and give the Nationals a 3-2 lead. Abrams stole third and scored on Abimelec Ortiz's grounder. Lile and Brady House hit consecutive doubles to add another run.

There just wasn't enough LoDo Magic for the Colorado Rockies as their comeback effort fell just short in a 7-6 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite a solid offensive night and bullpen performance, the Rockies couldn't overcome another difficult starting pitcher outing.
Hoping to replicate his successful outing last time facing the Dodgers at Coors Field, Ryan Feltner faced a tough test against the Dodgers lineup.
Feltner worked through the opening frames, keeping the game manageable. The Dodgers manufactured a run in the first inning and added a Shohei Ohtani two-run home run in the third inning. The Rockies managed to answer back both times to tie the game 3-3, but the Dodgers' potent order eventually broke through in the fourth inning.

The Dodgers kicked off the inning with three-straight doubles to score two runs, including Kyle Tucker's to snap an 0-for-26 streak at the plate. Hunter Feduccia then drew his second walk of the evening against Feltner before Ohtani grounded into a fielder's choice. Freddie Freeman capped off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to put the Dodgers up 6-3.

DENVER -- After the Los Angeles Dodgers opened their series against the Colorado Rockies with a win on Monday, they looked to carry that momentum into the second matchup at Coors Field. Eric Lauer took the mound for the Dodgers, while the Rockies countered with Ryan Feltner.
Ultimately, the Dodgers took home a 7-6 victory. Lauer earned his eighth win of the season, while Tanner Scott picked up his 17th save.
The Dodgers got things started early, as the offense struck in the first inning when Max Muncy hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Freddie Freeman for the Dodgers' first run of the game. That lead would not last long, however, as the Rockies got the run right back when Cole Carrigg hit an RBI double to tie the game at one.
The Dodgers regained the lead in the third inning when Ohtani hit a two-run homer, his 30th of the season. Ohtani has been extremely good in the month of August, posting a .309/.365/.632 slash line. While it would likely be difficult for Ohtani to earn the National League Cy Young Award at this point in the season, his chances of taking home yet another MVP are very much within the realm of possibility.
Taking into account the numbers he has posted as a starter, along with his performance at the plate, Ohtani has a very real chance of collecting his fourth MVP in a row and the fifth of his career.

Shohei Ohtani hit his 30th home run of the season on Tuesday night, his sixth consecutive season reaching the milestone, including all three years with the Dodgers. He's the seventh Dodger to hit 30 home runs three seasons in a row, and the first to do so in 25 years.
Ohtani's 30th home run came in the third inning on Tuesday against Colorado Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner. He's tied for eighth in the majors with 30 homers this season.
Ohtani is the first Dodger with at least 30 home runs in three consecutive seasons since Gary Sheffield from 1999-2001.

It's usually not a great time when the Los Angeles Dodgers come to Coors Field, and Monday night was no different as the Dodgers powered their way to an 11-5 victory. Still, the Rockies will look to shake off the loss and try to get something going in the second game of the series to even things up.
Ryan Feltner (5-6, 5.59 ERA) will take the hill for the Rockies for his 19th start of the year. August has been a better month for Feltner this season as he has worked at least five innings in his three starts and mitigated damage for the most part. In his last outing in Arizona, he allowed just two runs on seven hits over five innings of work and enjoyed plenty of run support.
He still hasn't been as crisp over the last month, allowing three or more walks in four of his last five outings. He has also given up a lot of hits, particularly the home run ball, something that is always a worry against the Dodgers. Feltner faced the Dodgers one other time this season, when he allowed just two earned runs on five hits over 5.2 innings at Coors Field. The Rockies would certainly take another start like that.
Meanwhile, Eric Lauer (7-6, 4.67 ERA) continues to be a new man since joining the Dodgers this season. Over 11 appearances since leaving the Toronto Blue Jays, where he had a 6.69 ERA, Lauer has gone 6-1 with a 3.48 ERA over 61 innings. He isn't always lights out, but he can regularly go six innings and allow three runs or less on a fairly economical pitch count.
He last faced the Rockies in Los Angeles at the start of July, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings of work. Lauer is a crafty lefty, something the Rockies have struggled with all season, so they will have to exercise better judgment against him. They have been drawing more walks lately, something that will need to continue, and avoiding strikeouts. Lauer's last outing came against the Kansas City Royals, in which he allowed just two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings of work with six strikeouts.

For the second year in a row, the West Side Little League team based in Hamilton, Ohio, is one win away from a berth in the Little League World Series.
West Side used its potent offense to get past North Oldham 11-4 in the Great Lakes Region winner's bracket semifinals. Since the start of the Ohio Little League state tournament, West Side has scored double-digit runs in six of its last eight games.
The Great Lakes Region championship game is 7 p.m. Aug. 12 and will be broadcast on ESPN2. West Side will either face Jasper National (Indiana), which it previously beat 11-0, or it will have a rematch with North Oldham.
The Little League World Series begins on Wednesday, Aug. 19, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The winner of the Great Lakes Region will face the Mountain Region champion at 2 p.m. on Aug. 20. West Side last went to the LLWS in 2021, when it advanced all the way to the finals.
Trailing North Oldham 3-1 in the top of the second inning, West Side put up nine runs to take a commanding lead. The first two runs scored on a walk and a wild pitch. Boone Treadway, son of Badin head coach Brion Treadway, tripled home two more runs. Leo Feltner and Josiah Infante both had RBI doubles before Xander Kinkade capped the inning with a two-run home run.

Oracle Park continues to be a difficult venue for the Colorado Rockies, as the offense faltered in an 8-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night. The Rockies have now lost seven straight in San Francisco as the Giants put away a close game with a late-game rally.
The woes of pitching at Oracle Park stung Ryan Feltner once again as he labored through 4.1 innings. From the start of the game, it was apparent that Feltner didn’t have the command he had shown over his last couple of outings. Despite long at-bats and big misses on his pitches, Feltner was able to mitigate trouble early on, however.
After retiring the first two batters he faced in the first inning, breakout star Casey Schmitt hit a solo home run to give the Giants an early 1-0 lead. Feltner then worked around two walks in the second inning and delivered a 1-2-3 third.

After the Rockies took the lead in the top of the fourth, the Giants answered back with another home run, this time courtesy of Bryce Eldridge, to tie the game. Feltner rebounded to escape the inning without further damage, but his luck was starting to run out.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Casey Schmitt, Bryce Eldridge and Willy Adames homered to back rookie Carson Whisenhunt and the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 8-2 on Thursday night to start a four-game series.
Whisenhunt (2-0) allowed two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings in his second start this season and the seventh of his career. He struck out four and walked four, throwing 57 of 87 pitches for strikes.
JT Brubacker retired all four batters he faced before Erik Miller struck out two in a scoreless eighth. Caleb Kilian fanned two in the ninth to finish.
Schmitt hit his 18th homer — a two-out shot off Ryan Feltner (3-3) for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. He had an RBI double after a two-out bases-empty single by Luis Arraez to ignite a four-run eighth against reliever TJ Shook. Rafael Devers added a ground-rule RBI double in front of Adames' 15th homer to cap the rally.
Eldridge became the first Giant this season to hit a home run into McCovey Cove, tying it 2-2 in the fourth with his eighth of the season.

The San Francisco Giants welcome the Colorado Rockies to Oracle Park tonight to begin a four-game series.
As of the time this is being written, the Giants have not yet announced a starting pitcher for tonight’s game. Good old element of surprise tactic. You can check out the comments below for more up to date information.
Whoever it ends up being will face off against Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner, who enters tonight’s game with a 4.27 ERA, 4.68 FIP, with 44 strikeouts to 20 walks in 59 innings pitched. His last start was in the Rockies’ 15-3 win over the Giants on Friday, in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts in six innings.

The Colorado Rockies had a surprisingly competitive series against the Los Angeles Dodgers despite losing two of the three games they played. The road offense continues to be impressive, but they will now have to face a difficult challenge in facing the San Francisco Giants on the road for a four-game series, in a ballpark they have historically struggled in.
Ryan Feltner (3-2, 4.27 ERA) will make his 13th start of the season for the Rockies. Feltner was excellent in his last start, which came against the Giants last week at Coors Field. Feltner recorded a quality start by allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits over six innings. He also set a season-high in strikeouts with nine and didn’t allow a walk in a fairly dominant performance. Making just his fourth career start at Oracle Park, Feltner has struggled pitching by the Bay. In three previous starts, the most recent in 2024, Feltner has allowed 11 runs on 17 hits, including three home runs, over 16 innings of work. Walks have hit him the most in the past, but that was the old Feltner, as the current version has done well pounding the zone and getting strikeouts. A struggling Giants offense opens the door for another strong outing for the Rockies starter.
Carson Whisenhunt (1-0, 3.60 ERA) gets the nod for San Francisco, having just been recalled from Triple-A today. Whisenhunt made a spot start on June 17, his only start with the big league club this season, allowing just two runs on six hits over five innings against the Atlanta Braves. In Triple-A Sacramento this season, he sports a 4.42 ERA over 16 outings with 82 strikeouts against 37 walks. He struggled in his handful of starts last season, recording a 5.01 ERA, with walks and home runs being the main culprits. He has three or four pitches at his disposal, with a changeup that is considered his best pitch, which has a 27% whiff rate.
First Pitch: 7:45 pm MT
