The Detroit Tigers are about to make a rotation change that looks temporary on paper.
It may not stay that way.
Left-hander Andrew Sears is already in Detroit and is expected to start Saturday against the Colorado Rockies. The Tigers are expected to place Keider Montero on the paternity list as he travels to Venezuela for the birth of his child, according to reporting from Evan Woodbery.
Normally, that would be a straightforward swap. One starter leaves for a few days, another fills his spot, and everything returns to normal when the original starter comes back.
Detroit's situation is more complicated because Jack Flaherty is also closing in on his return from the injured list.

The Colorado Rockies entered Detroit hoping to snap a seven-game losing streak on the road. Despite a solid start from their rookie pitcher and an offense that out-hit the Tigers, the Rockies bullpen collapsed in the middle innings, leading to a 6-2 defeat. They are now just eight games away from losing 100 games for the fourth season in a row.
Making his fourth big-league start, Mason Adams continued to impress in a Rockies uniform with a fairly quick and efficient outing.
The night started promisingly as Adams struck out the side in the bottom of the first inning. In the second, he allowed a leadoff single to Riley Greene and a one-out walk to Max Clark but managed to escape with a ground ball double play. He then worked a quick 1-2-3 third inning followed by a quick fourth inning where he faced the minimum.

Through the first four innings, Adams had thrown just 52 pitches with four groundouts and looked primed to go the deepest into the game than he had previously. Unfortunately, he had to labor in the fifth inning with 25 pitches.

The list this week includes hitters to stream this weekend (Henry Bolte, Jeff McNeil, Colt Keith) as well as those who should be added by Monday (Ty France, Mickey Moniak, Cole Carrigg).
The same can be said on the pitching side, as those who need a weekend streamer can skip to the bottom of this article.
Ty France, 1B, Padres, 31%: France has been one of baseball's best hitters in the second half, batting .324 with a .937 OPS. Unfortunately, he remains on waivers in many leagues, as managers opt to chase an influx of exciting rookies rather than adding a boring veteran. But that should change over the weekend, as France and his teammates will open next week with four games at Coors Field against a Rockies pitching staff that ranks last in baseball with a 5.50 ERA. Managers in deeper formats could also consider Jake Cronenworth (6%), who has hit second in the lineup of late, or catcher Luis Campusano (1%), who is working as a DH often enough to keep him in the regular lineup.
Mickey Moniak, OF, Rockies, 26%: Moniak has some similarities to France, as a boring veteran who is having his productive season overshadowed by a constant stream of youngsters on the waiver wire. It helps that the series will come against the Mariners, who surprising rank 28th in baseball with a 5.39 ERA since the All-Star break.

Aaron Judge may be back in action for the New York Yankees, but they are bringing him along slowly to preserve his health heading into the most important stretch of the season. To that end, Judge received a day off on Thursday in their series finale against the Colorado Rockies, with Jasson Dominguez taking his spot not just at right field, but at the three-spot in the lineup.
However, Dominguez did not impress during his opportunity on Thursday. In fact, he did the opposite. Not only did he go 0-4 from the plate (with one walk) with two strikeouts on the night, he also made an error in the top of the eighth, failing to field a base hit cleanly which allowed the Rockies to score a run.

After 99 days, No. 99 and one of MLB's biggest stars is back in action.
The Yankees have activated three-time American League Most Valuable Player and star outfielder Aaron Judge from the 60-day disabled list. Judge has been out of action with a fractured rib since early June, and his return brings back one of MLB's foremost fan attractions.
Already, ticket prices are quickly rising on the resale market for Judge's first game back, which will be Tuesday night at home against the Rockies. As of Tuesday morning, the average get-in price for the game was $87, more than twice the comparable level from Saturday and far higher than what a midweek game against a lowly Colorado team would normally fetch.
Anticipation is quickly rising for Judge's return after the longest injury of his storied career. Judge last played on May 31, and was placed on the injured list five days later. Judge is returning to major league play without any type of minor-league rehabilitation ****** ignment.
Notably, that Yankees-Rockies game previously saw a wild rise and fall in resale pricing, unrelated to Judge and his injury. The contest is also on the Yankees' promotion calendar, with the first 40,000 fans receiving a trading card from the Naruto manga series. The Yankees have activated three-time American League Most Valuable Player and star outfielder Aaron Judge from the 60-day disabled list. Judge has been out of action with a fractured rib since early June, and his return brings back one of MLB's foremost fan attractions.
Already, ticket prices are quickly rising on the resale market for Judge's first game back, which will be Tuesday night at home against the Rockies. As of Tuesday morning, the average get-in price for the game was $87, more than twice the comparable level from Saturday and far higher than what a midweek game against a lowly Colorado team would normally fetch.
Anticipation is quickly rising for Judge's return after the longest injury of his storied career. Judge last played on May 31, and was placed on the injured list five days later. Judge is returning to major league play without any type of minor-league rehabilitation ****** ignment.
Notably, that Yankees-Rockies game previously saw a wild rise and fall in resale pricing, unrelated to Judge and his injury. The contest is also on the Yankees' promotion calendar, with the first 40,000 fans receiving a trading card from the Naruto manga series. Initial hype around that giveaway among manga fans briefly drove resale pricing for the game beyond $250 per ticket in early August. After the card design was revealed and the giveaway was expanded beyond an initial 18,000, demand plummeted.

Judge hasn't played since May 31 because of a broken right rib, but the slugger traveled with the Yankees on their recent trip to the West Coast. He took batting practice on the field multiple times last weekend in San Diego and ran the bases as he worked toward his return.

Something isn't right with Shohei Ohtani. It has been obvious to Dodgers fans for a couple of weeks, and is finally became apparent to the team. So, for the last four nights, Ohtani has found himself on the bench, resting his injured left knee and balky right biceps. The team is now considering whether or not to put him on the injured list.
Both of these injuries have kept Ohtani off the mound since July 3rd. But, for a while, the maladies did not truly affect his offense. In fact, in the first 35 games after his last pitching appearance, Ohtani slashed .309/.366/.626, with eleven home runs and nine doubles.
But since the day he hit two home runs in Denver against the Rockies — a run of 13 games — he is slashing a mere .137/.290/.255, with one double, triple, and homer. And on Wednesday night against the Cardinals, he struck out four times. That brought his batting average down to .279, his lowest mark since May 30th. But it was not just the four punch outs, it was how he looked in those at-bats. Ohtani, who typically unleashes ferocious swings, matching power with power, looked overmatched and out of sorts. He looked diminished, off-balance, and considerably less than 100%.
Last month Ohtani started a throwing program to get him back on the mound as soon as possible. After a handful of good bullpen sessions, the pain in the right knee raised its head again, and Los Angeles was forced to shut down their two-way star. While in Detroit last week, manager Dave Roberts stated that "if any pitcher was feeling like this, we wouldn't run him out there," so neither will his $700 million star.
But there was hope that once the thought of (and thus the training necessary to) pitching again was off the table, Shohei would get back in the groove in the batter's box. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, whose offense has been in a funk for more than a month, that has not been the case. He has two singles since that time, one at 66-mph and one at 78-mph — a far cry from the 100-mph+ that fans have become accustomed to from the slugger (according to Savant, his 93.2-mph average exit velocity is in the 97th percentile).

The St. Louis Cardinals' nine-game road trip is off to a strong start. They took two of three from the Los Angeles Dodgers this past week, and followed that by winning two of three against the Colorado Rockies. It was an interesting week. The Cardinals lost a game in the ninth, won a game in the ninth, and, sandwiched between that, a home-plate umpire who seemingly thought he owned Coors Field. You never quite know what you may see when you go to the ballpark.
Following this 4-2 week, it is time once again to look at the Cardinals' standouts of the week.
Herrera seems to like hitting out West. In six games this week, the All-Star recorded 11 hits, hit two home runs, and drove in nine runs. Except for Wednesday's game, he recorded at least two hits. Furthermore, he drove in runs in seven of the nine games.
His biggest moment, however, came in the ninth inning on Friday. Trailing 6-4, with all the Doug Eddings' chaos happening just minutes before, Herrera hit a three-run home run to give the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish. It was a chaotic night, and it certainly would have stung had the team failed to win. However, Herrera's blast reminded Cardinal Nation the most important thing about the 2026 Cardinals- they never stop fighting. Crooked ballcaps, pitch-clock violations, and an overzealous umpire were not enough to derail the team on Friday. It is a win many Cardinals fans will remember from this season, and Herrera provided the home run that made the difference—well deserving of a spot as one of the Cardinals' standouts.

After a couple of crazy games — one loss and one win — the Rockies will look to take their final game against the St. Louis Cardinals in this afternoon's rubber match. If they win, they will tie the season series 3-3.
The Rockies have played 19 rubber matches so far this season and are 6-13, the second-worst rubber match winning percentage (.316) behind the Boston Red Sox (5-14, .263). Seven of their rubber match losses have come by two or fewer runs, and they are 3-5 in home rubber matches (3-8 on the road). Wednesday's rubber match against the Orioles marked the first time the Rockies have won three-straight rubber matches since winning five-straight May 7-June 25, 2023.
Tanner Gordon (1-4, 5.18 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies. Gordon was on a roll in his last outing before being stymied by a one-hour and 38-minute rain delay. Gordon managed to toss five innings before the delay, only allowing three hits and one run with one walk and three strikeouts. But he only threw 60 pitches, so hopefully that means he'll be fresh this afternoon. He has faced the Cardinals twice (one start) and is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA in 9.1 innings.

Colorado starter Mason Adams, making his third start since his major league debut Aug. 25, failed to make it out of the fifth and was denied his first career win. Brennan Bernardino (4-3) got the win and Jordan Romano got the final two outs for his 15th save.
Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (5-14) lost his eighth straight decision and has not won in his last nine starts. He set down the first 10 batters before walking Connor Norby, then got the next two batters before Colorado broke through in the fifth.

According to Woody Paige of the Denver Gazette, ******* and Charlie Monfort may be planning to sell even more of the team to the Penner Sports Group, who joined the ownership group in April by purchasing 40% of the club.
Paige writes, "According to multiple sources, the Penners and Waltons intend to take over the 30-season-old club when and if Major League Baseball returns sometime in 2027." They are looking to purchase 35% more of the team, bringing their total ownership stake to 75%. However, the Monforts will likely remain on as minority owners, keeping around 20%, according to Paige.
This comes on the heels of Stan Kroenke buying the Angels, after apparently trying to buy the Rockies.

Baltimore took a 5-3 lead in the 11th on RBI singles by Samuel Basallo and Blaze Alexander, who finished with three hits, but Colorado rallied against Grant Wolfram (6-3). TJ Rumfield drove in Connor Norby before Wolfram struck out Cole Carrigg and Zac Veen.
Adael Amador hit a ground-rule double to left. Sullivan then blooped a 3-2 sinker into left, and Amador easily beat the throw home.
The Orioles squandered Trevor Rogers' career-high 11 strikeouts when Colorado tied it with two outs in the ninth off Andrew Kittredge. If there was any team that needed a win — really, really needed a win — it was the Colorado Rockies. Their odds of avoiding another 100-loss season were sagging by the day, and they were drowning after their 10th consecutive loss at Coors Field.
Making things worse were Monday night's near win that ended in heartbreak thanks to a Colton Cowser bottom-of-the-ninth home run robbery.
But the Rockies came to play on Tuesday and finished the evening having defeated the Orioles 4-2 and ended that home-field losing streak — their first win at Coors Field since August 2.
"I think it was a good win," manager Warren Schaeffer said after the game. "It's good to see the boys get rewarded with a W tonight."
Jake McCarthy picked up where he left off on Monday night with a lead0ff double (28). He got to third, when, with two outs, TJ Rumfield took his 65th walk, leaving runners at the corners. However, Cole Carrigg flew out to second to end the threat.

But the Rockies came to play on Tuesday and finished the evening having defeated the Orioles 4-2 and ended that home-field losing streak — their first win at Coors Field since August 2.
"I think it was a good win," manager Warren Schaeffer said after the game. "It's good to see the boys get rewarded with a W tonight."
Jake McCarthy picked up where he left off on Monday night with a lead0ff double (28). He got to third, when, with two outs, TJ Rumfield took his 65th walk, leaving runners at the corners. However, Cole Carrigg flew out to second to end the threat.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It was hard to tell which Washington rookie was more excited after his big league debut, Yohandy Morales or Jared Simpson.
Morales had three hits, including a homer. Simpson threw three perfect innings and got the win. Both were called up from the minors before the game, and the Nationals' expanded roster beat the Atlanta Braves 9-5 on Tuesday night.
"Unbelievable from both of those guys," Nationals manager Blake Butera said.
This was the second time since 1901 a player homered in his debut, while a different player on the same team earned the win on the mound in his debut, according to Sportradar. It also happened on April 4, 2005, when Colorado's Jeff Baker homered against San Diego, and Ryan Speier of the Rockies got the win in the season opener.
On five other occasions, the same player has both homered and earned the win in his debut: Kenta Maeda of the Dodgers in 2016, Jason Jennings of the Rockies in 2001, John Montefusco of the Giants in 1974, Hal Haydel of the Twins in 1970 and Denny McLain of the Tigers in 1963.

The 2026 season for the Chicago White Sox has been magical. They've gone from worst to first, and entering September, they sit 3.0 games up on the Cleveland Guardians for the AL Central lead.
Their odds of making the postseason are high, but there is still plenty of time before they can win the AL Central. That's especially the case due to a significant issue that has popped up this August.
As ESPN's David Schoenfield highlighted, the White Sox have a serious problem on their hands with their struggling starting rotation.
"The White Sox went 14-14 in August despite the rotation posting a 6.21 ERA; only the Athletics and Colorado Rockies had a worse rotation ERA in the month," Schoenfield writes.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Orioles fans and fans across the country.
The Orioles have finally done it. They're back up to a .500 record thanks to last night's late-night home run robbery by Colton Cowser that turned what would have been a walkoff loss into the win that got them to 69-69, a .500 record for the first time since April 30. It's been a while!
After that, the Orioles sit a half-game behind the Guardians for the third wild card spot. They are one game ahead of the Blue Jays and Rangers, the other two teams who seem to still be in the hunt as well. The rest of the competition has, barring a big winning streak to turn it around, fallen out of the picture. They have a real chance to do this thing, right around 1 in 4 based on this morning's projections. Their chances will get better if they can keep beating the Rockies, and better still if the Blue Jays beat the Guardians over the coming days.
It's not a smooth road. The Orioles are still going to have to overcome problems that they have had as this season has gone along in order to make it. Some of those problems have been ongoing even while the team ended up winning recent games against the Athletics and Rockies.
