The Oregon Ducks men's basketball program has gone through a litany of changes this offseason, with eight incoming transfers replacing eight outgoing transfers. The coaching staff has also experienced its fair share of changes, as long-time Dana Altman ***** istant coach Mike Mennenga departed for Creighton and Brandon Kuhn was hired as the new strength and conditioning coach.
The latest change comes from ***** istant coach Kevin McKenna, who has decided to retire. McKenna has worked on the player development side for the past few seasons, helping develop a trio of Jackson Shelstad, Nate Bittle and Kwame Evans Jr. into All-Big Ten caliber players. He spent 16 seasons at Oregon.
McKenna's basketball career spans back a number of decades, as he was a standout player at Creighton before being selected 88th overall in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1981 NBA Draft. He spent six seasons in the league with eight different teams before heading into coaching after his playing days concluded.
Thank you, Coach McKenna, for helping lead Oregon to new heights during your 16 seasons on the bench.

Former Ohio State and current Cleveland Browns defensive back Denzel Ward just got paid. He became the highest-paid DB back in 2022 with a five-year extension worth $100.5 million. That was eventually eclipsed, but with the news of Ward signing a two-year extension reportedly worth $62.2 million ($52.3 million guaranteed), he has reclaimed that distinction once again. The news was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
After a distinguished career at Ohio State, where he was a consensus All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2017, Ward was selected by the Browns in the 2018 NFL draft with the No. 4 pick. That draft selection has paid off well for Cleveland. Not only did Ward make the PFWA All-Rookie team and has also been selected to five Pro Bowls.
During his 110-game career, Ward has racked up 361 tackles, 104 pass breakups, 18 interceptions and four touchdowns. He is on the shortlist as the best defensive back in the NFL.

As a reminder, Ohio State not only sends guys to the NFL, but they eventually get paid a ton of money as some of the best players in the League. Case in point to the Ward news: former OSU and current Seattle receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba recently made news by signing a record four-year contract extension worth $168.6 million ($120 million guaranteed).

The Atlanta Falcons are entering the 2026 season with a new look on the right side of their offensive line for the second consecutive year, hoping the latest changes will provide stability and strengthen the protection in front of their offense.
The transition began after longtime right tackle Kaleb McGary announced his retirement during the offseason. McGary, the 31st overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, started 92 games for Atlanta from 2019 through 2024 before a knee injury sidelined him for the entire 2025 season. His retirement marked the end of a significant chapter for the Falcons' offensive line.
Atlanta temporarily filled the void last season with veteran Elijah Wilkinson, but his departure in free agency left the Falcons searching once again for a dependable starter.
The team's answer came in the form of veteran tackle Jawaan Taylor. Selected four picks after McGary in the 2019 draft, Taylor brings a wealth of experience to Atlanta after spending time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs. Over seven NFL seasons, he has started 120 regular-season games and appeared in nine playoff contests, giving the Falcons a proven veteran with championship experience.

The Houston Rockets have had players donning a total of 52 different jersey numbers (and have one not part of any numerical series for Houston ****** istant coach and general manager Carroll Dawson) since their founding at the start of the 1967-68 season, worn by just under 500 players in the course of Rockets history.

Remember when Will Howard was considered to have an advantage in the Pittsburgh Steelers QB2 battle with Mason Rudolph? Yeah, me too. But apparently, Mike McCarthy has different plans in mind, at least to start training camp. And it's bad news for Howard.
As the Steelers reported to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, McCarthy revealed that Rudolph will be getting QB2 reps to start camp, while Howard and Drew Allar will split time at QB3.
Howard, selected by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was considered to be in pole position for the backup quarterback job in Pittsburgh. And considering the Steelers are more than likely to keep only three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, the loser of the QB2 battle between Howard and Rudolph would likely be a trade or roster-cut candidate.
It's still extremely early in training camp, with plenty of time for Howard to prove he deserves a spot on the Steelers' roster over Rudolph. But as things stand right now, it's basically Rudolph's job to lose.

The Golden State Warriors have re-signed veteran Draymond Green on a one-year $28 million deal after missing out on LeBron James, US media reported Tuesday.
Four-time NBA champion Green had last month declined the same contract in order to free up **** e in the Warriors' salary cap as they pursued free-agent superstar James.
But with James signing for the Philadelphia 76ers this week, both Green and Golden State agreed to renew on the previous terms.
The 36-year-old forward, who was on the Rio and Tokyo Olympic US gold medal teams, has spent his entire career with the Warriors since being selected in the 2012 NBA Draft.
Green played a key role alongside the likes of Stephen Curry in the dynasty that captured NBA **** les in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022.

As announced by the program, Alabama baseball's Bryce Fowler and Hagan Banks have signed with the Minnesota Twins.
A pair of redshirt seniors on Alabama's CWS team this past spring, both of Fowler and Banks were not selected in the 2026 MLB draft, and will now begin their professional career's in the minor leagues of Minnesota's organization.
Fowler joined the Crimson Tide prior to the 2025 season from Pearl River Community College, and went on to start during both seasons in Tuscaloosa as one of Alabama's top defensive players. Across his 121 games played, Fowler slashed a combined .294/.397/.442 with 13 home runs, 83 RBI, and 27 stolen bases, while also leading the Crimson Tide with a .320 batting average this past spring.
Banks spent all five seasons of his collegiate career in Tuscaloosa from 2022-26, emerging as Alabama's closer this past spring. The right-hander made 63 career appearances for Alabama over that span with seven starts, posting a combined 3-4 record with a 3.59 ERA, a 105:33 K:BB ratio, and six saves across 95.1 innings pitched.
Other former Alabama players currently in the Twins' organization include pitchers Connor Prielipp, Riley Quick, Hunter Hoopes, and Jonathan Stevens.

An early look at the Madden 27 ratings is here, and there are some surprises for fans.
One of those comes when taking a look at the highest-rated rookies in the game. There are several recognizable names among that grouping, and unsurprisingly, every name on the list was selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. However, there is one prominent player selected in the first round this year that was shockingly omitted from the top 10 rated rookies.
Despite capturing the Heisman Trophy last year and being selected by the Las Vegas Raiders as the No. 1 overall draft pick, Fernando Mendoza was not among the top 10 rated rookies in the new game. The cut-off to make that list was a 78 overall rating, while Mendoza only sits at a 74 overall – missing the top 10 by just a few points.
But reports indicate that the franchise plans to run with Kirk Cousins as the starter this year, so his rating should reflect that he may not make as big an impact in his rookie season. And no one is going to care about his Madden rating in July if he does make the field and plays well this season. It is just a game, after all.
But someone has to be among the top 10 rated rookies in the game, so who made that list? Well, at the top of the list was running back Jeremiyah Love, the third overall selection in the draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Love procured an 82 overall rating in the game. Joining him with an 82 rating was safety Caleb Downs, who was picked by the Dallas Cowboys with the 11th overall pick in the draft.

Jalen Carter has signed a four-year extension with the Philadelphia Eagles, the club said Tuesday, in a deal that reportedly makes him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history.
Though the 2025 Super Bowl winners did not disclose financial terms, US media said the extension was worth $152 million (133.5 million euros), or $38 million per year, with $106 million guaranteed.
Carter, 25, is one of the NFL's most highly-rated young defenders, having been selected to each of the last two Pro Bowls.
He was drafted ninth in the first round in 2023, and became a cornerstone of the Eagles' vaunted defense.
Carter has 13.5 quarterback sacks and 108 tackles across his first three seasons with Philadelphia.

A former three-year Duke Blue Devil recently signed a professional contract overseas after a four-year NBA career. According to BasketNews, Wendell Moore Jr. will be joining Italian basketball club Virtus Bologna. Virtus Bologna competes in the EuroLeague and topped the Italian basketball league (LBA) standings last season with a 23-5 record.
After earning North Carolina Mr. Basketball honors during his senior season at ******* Mill High School, Moore Jr. went on to average 10.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 ******* ists and 1.2 steals in three seasons at Duke. Moore Jr. was then selected No. 26 overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2022 NBA Draft.
In four NBA seasons, Moore Jr. played a total of 96 games for three different franchises: the Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets. In those games, he averaged 2.3 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.7 ******* ists, 0.3 steals and 0.3 blocks in 8.2 minutes per game.

Four days after OpenAI disclosed that its models had escaped a cyber evaluation and compromised Hugging Face, CEO Sam Altman said humanity had entered science-fiction territory.

Altman did not present the breach as evidence for that claim, but the timing gave his words an uncomfortable real-world backdrop.
OpenAI disabled its production safety classifiers to measure the models' maximum cyber capability. Its July 21 disclosure said they exploited a proxy zero-day, escaped isolation, reached the internet and used stolen credentials and other methods to enter Hugging Face's production systems. They pursued benchmark answers, not a self-selected goal, yet improvised against a live company beyond a boundary their operators expected to hold.
Reuters reported on July 24 that the intrusion ran from July 11 through July 13 and OpenAI took nearly a week after the first escape attempt to connect its test to the breach. Hugging Face had already disclosed it and contacted the FBI. An OpenAI spokeswoman alleged "several inaccuracies" without identifying them. This is not proof that AI has surpassed humanity or begun rewriting itself. It shows agents can sustain complex operations long enough to outrun their controls.

A day after putting pen to paper and officially signing with the Pirates, Derek Curiel took batting practice on the field at PNC Park ahead of Monday night's game against the Diamondbacks.
The on-field batting practice capped off a six-day stay in Pittsburgh for Curiel, who was selected by the Pirates with the fifth pick in this year's draft. He joined a hitting group of Bryan Reynolds, Ryan O'Hearn and Jacob Gonzalez for his first swings at his future home.
"It felt good," Curiel said after his round. "The stadium is beautiful. Nice backdrop, beautiful batter's eye. Couldn't ask for a better field to hit at."
Curiel said he hadn't swung a bat since arriving in Pittsburgh, but he didn't waste much time before taking some impressive cuts. With third base coach Tony Beasley throwing to him, Curiel hit a couple ****** over the wall and into the seats. One deep drive to right drew some aahs from several current Pirates.

ST. LOUIS — The Chicago Cubs designated right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon for **** ignment before the start of a four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals.
In a corresponding move, the Cubs selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Andrew Wantz from Triple-A Iowa.
In his last start, Taillon allowed seven earned runs, with three home runs in four innings, in an 8-7 loss to Pittsburgh. That outing raised his ERA to 5.92 on the season.
In 15 starts, Taillon had a career-worst 5.92 ERA with a 2-6 record. He has allowed the National League's most home runs this season with 25 on 76 hits.
Taillon, 34, went 2-6 with a 5.92 ERA in 15 starts this season with the Cubs. He is in the final year of a four-year, $68 million contract.

Two weeks ago, I argued in a column that USC baseball needed to pay up and retain star pitcher Grant Govel for the 2027 season. Well, it appears as though the Trojans listened to me.
On Monday, Govel announced that he will forego signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who selected him in the 16th round of the MLB Draft. Instead, he will be returning to USC for his junior season in 2027.
This is a massive boost for the Trojans. Govel finished the 2026 campaign with a 10-3 record and a 2.87 ERA. For his performance, he earned second-team All-American honors.
With first-team All-American Mason Edwards signing with the Athletics as a second round draft pick, Govel should take over as USC's ace next season. In Govel and NCAA Tournament hero Andrew Johnson, Trojans hope that they will once again have one of the top pitching duos in the country in 2027.

With rookies already in camp, the Tennessee **** ans are just a few days away from taking the field and watching the position battles commence.
Tennessee made some significant changes to its roster throughout the offseason and will look a lot different than it did in 2025, but it still has some questions to answer on both sides of the ball. In his preseason preview, ESPN's Turron Davenport outlines three key position battles to watch once camp kicks off that could have a major impact on the outcome of the 2026 season.
There's no slam-dunk favorite in the three-way battle between veterans Austin Schlottmann and Andre James and rookie Pat Coogan. Schlottmann has the upper hand, having played in Daboll's offense the past two seasons. But James, a late addition during minicamp, started 31 games for offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo with the Raiders in 2022 and 2023. Coogan has an outside shot at the job because of his top-level communication skills, but he has an uphill battle after being selected in the sixth round in April.
The late addition of James adds some more intrigue to this competition, which had the appearance of a two-horse race throughout most of the offseason. James did have his best seasons under Bricillo, and could surprise. Coogan has championship pedigree from his college days, and could eventually see some reps, definitely making it one of the positions to watch.
Veterans Cordell Volson and Jackson Slater are the primary competitors in this battle. Volson has 48 starts under his belt after being selected by the Bengals in the fourth round in 2022. He missed the 2025 season after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder last August. Slater enters his second season after being selected in the fifth round last year. He played 34 snaps last season, all of which came in the season finale against the Jaguars. Someone needs to emerge quickly to help solidify the right side, especially with questions surrounding Latham at right tackle.

On Friday, the basketball world was sent into a frenzy with the news that NBA free agent LeBron James was signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
Among the greatest players in NBA history, James' reported signing is one that immediately put the spotlight on the Sixers' projected 2026-27 roster. On that roster is a name familiar to Alabama basketball fans in Labaron Philon Jr., a former Crimson Tide guard whom Philadelphia recently selected in the first round of the 2026 NBA draft.

According to a report from The Spokesman Review's Greg Woods, the Washington Huskies and Washington State Cougars will not play their annual Apple Cup rivalry on the hardwood.
It's the first time since 1917 that the two teams won't meet in the regular season after the Huskies moved from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten following the end of the 2023-24 season; instead, the in-state rivals will play an exhibition game in Seattle at some point this fall.
The Huskies currently lead the series 189-111, and have won the last three matchups against the Cougars, most recently an 81-69 victory in Pullman.
In that contest, the Huskies were led by freshman forward Hannes Steinbach, who posted 14 points and 13 rebounds as part of a stellar season that saw him selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 14 overall pick in June's NBA draft, while sophomore guard Wesley Yates added 26 points and 7 rebounds in the win.

The Philadelphia 76ers landed LeBron James in free agency as they were able to land the future Hall of Famer on a 2-year $8 million deal with the second year being a player option. James will now join Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe to form one of the strongest starting lineups in the history of the game.
With that being said, what does that mean for his son, Bronny James? The Los Angeles Lakers selected the younger James with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA draft to team him up with his father. The Lakers did guarantee Bronny's deal for the 2026-27 season, but with LeBron joining Philadelphia, there was speculation that he would want his son with him.
However, per Rich Paul, that will not be the case. Neither player is tied at the hip. Bronny will continue his career with the Lakers.
As for LeBron, he will look to begin building chemistry and getting everything in line with the Sixers. Bronny will continue on with the Lakers and look to carve out his own role and legacy a bit in LA as he grows and develops as a player.

The Supreme Court's Montgomery decision changed the litigation landscape for the trucking industry. They will examine the full chain of decisions that placed a particular truck and driver on the road.
That means reviewing the shipper's conduct as well. Plaintiffs will ask who selected the broker, what the shipper required of the broker's carrier selection process, which carrier was approved, which truck arrived, what facility personnel observed, and why the freight was released.
Montgomery did not create a new cause of action against shippers. It did, however, reinforce that transportation safety decisions may be tested under state negligence law. Shippers should expect increased scrutiny when their own conduct contributed to an unsafe transportation arrangement.
The broker may select and approve the motor carrier, but the shipper controls the freight at pickup. The shipper can see the truck, verify the carrier information, confirm the driver, review the paperwork, and decide whether the goods will be released. The shipper is not expected to repeat the broker's entire carrier vetting process. Its responsibility is more focused: confirm that the carrier, driver, and equipment arriving at the facility match the transportation **** ignment.

Crystal Palace are reported to have made Stade Brestois 29's Raphaël Le Guen (19) one of their targets for the summer transfer window, according to the BBC.
At just 19 years of age, the Breton defender is seen as a potential successor to Maxence Lacroix (26), whose future looks set to be with Chelsea, where he is expected to sign a contract in the coming hours.
A product of the Brest youth academy, Le Guen made his professional debut last August, coming on as a substitute during his side's 3-1 defeat away to RC Lens. Selected again against AJ Auxerre (a 3-0 defeat) in March, the defender finally earned his first start against Paris FC (a 4-0 defeat) on matchday 32.
He put in a convincing performance and went on to finish the season as a regular starter, notably starting the matches against Paris Saint-Germain and RC Strasbourg-Alsace.
Under contract with Les Pirates until 2029, Le Guen could therefore soon make the leap to the Premier League, where he would have the opportunity to play under his compatriot Pierre Sage.

For nearly two full years, Brayden Taylor looked like another minor leaguer whose career would stagnate once he reached Double-A.
Originally selected by the Rays as the 19th overall selection in the 2023 draft, Taylor has an excellent debut campaign, hitting .242/.361/.516 with 5 HR over 108 PA over the remaining minor league season. He followed that up by torching High-A in 2024, hitting .269/.389/.513 with 14 HR and 26 SB, registering a 154 wRC+ over 383 plate appearances.
With his stellar play, the Rays promoted Taylor to Double-A on July 30th, 2024; he hasn't been able to move past Montgomery since that promotion.
Brayden Taylor is a 5-tool player but none of his tools are much above average. He is a solid defender with a good arm; there's some pop in his bat but no one would consider him a true power threat. His hit tool is decent but he won't win any batting **** les. That gives you a player whose five tools all grade around 50 or 55.
During his first full year in the Rays system, Taylor displayed exactly what type of player that could translate into. From August 4th, 2023 through July 27th, 2024, Taylor hit .263/.383/.514 with 19 HR over 491 plate appearances.

Jordan Devey, a member of the New England Patriots' 2014 Super Bowl team, has passed away. He was 38 years old.
Devey's wife, Linsey, shared the news on social media.
Born in American Fork, Utah, Devey did not play football in high school but instead was an avid tuba player as well as a member of the Cavemen's basketball team. After serving a two-year mission in Costa Rica, he enrolled at Snow College in 2009 and two years later transferred to Memphis.
Devey went on to go unselected in the 2013 NFL Draft, but he found a temporary home with the Ravens. After the Ravens let him go that same summer, the Patriots picked him up through their practice squad. He found his was to the 53-man roster the following season and went on to start four of the seven games he appeared in. To cap off the 2014 season, Devey earned a Super Bowl ring as a reserve lineman.
The Patriots traded him to San Francisco the following training camp. He later also spent three seasons with the Chiefs, and one each with the Raiders and Bills. In total, he ended his eight-year NFL career with a combined 45 regular season and playoff appearances.

The 2026 SEC media days have come and gone this week in Tampa, Florida, and that means we're one step closer to the college football regular season.
As per usual, the SEC released the Preseason Media Poll All-SEC team on Friday, which was voted on by the media that was on hand covering this week's event. After the Oklahoma Sooners had just three players make the all-league predictions a year ago, OU was much more well-represented in 2026.
On the first team, both kicker Tate Sandell and long snapper Ben Anderson represented the Sooners. Sandell returned after winning the Lou Groza Award last season, while Anderson has established himself as one of the league's best long snappers over the course of his career.
OU had eight players selected to the second team. Wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III, offensive lineman Michael Fasusi, defensive linemen David Stone and Taylor Wein, linebacker Kip Lewis, defensive backs Eli Bowen and Peyton Bowen, and kicker/punter Grayson Miller all got the nod.
Sategna returns as OU's top wide receiver after showing off his explosiveness last year. Fasusi had an impressive true freshman season in Norman, establishing himself as Oklahoma's starting left tackle. Stone and Wein were breakout stars for the Sooners last year on the front line of the defense. Lewis continues to be OU's emotional leader on defense and is the longest-tenured Sooner. The Bowen brothers are back for another year patrolling the Oklahoma secondary, and Miller returns after becoming OU's starter at punter early last season. He put together an impressive year in 2025.
