CHICAGO − Michigan football's first game in the 2025 season came against New Mexico, a relatively innocuous foe.
But former safety Brandyn Hillman didn't see it that way. In fact, after spending all fall hitting people at practice that wore the same colors as he did, the defensive back couldn't wait to knock somebody else around, especially a team that looked like New Mexico, wearing cherry and silver − not dissimilar to the scarlet and gray sported by the Wolverines' biggest rival.
"How I look at it is, they got the same colors as [expletive] Ohio State," he said of switching his mentality from hitting teammates to hitting opponents. "I just play it like that, to be honest."
For decades, "The Game" has been the most important week on the schedule in both Ann Arbor and Columbus. After Jim Harbaugh lost the first five matchups to OSU in the rivalry (and then U-M bowed out of the sixth in 2020 after an outbreak of COVID-19 in the locker room), he went into 2021 saying the Wolverines were going to beat Ohio State "or die trying."

CHICAGO -- All offseason, Michigan tight end Zack Marshall has been noting that the pass catchers in the offense have more freedom than they had before, with more ability to work to get open downfield compared to the scheme under the previous staff. Marshall says that the pass game should open up exponentially as a result. Quarterback Bryce Underwood agrees, noting how much it helps him out. He says, 'If you see it with the Utah offense last year, you're going to see the same.'
But that's not the only reason why the offense will take a step forward in his eyes.
It's not just about the scheme, per se, as much as it is about connection. Underwood says that while it's important that the players have the ability to use their athleticism and skills to get open downfield, just as important is that everyone is on the same page. And given the bonds that he and his teammates have built this offseason, the ability to anticipate each other will pay dividends in the pass game, he says.
"Overall, it's about the bond that we build off the field, work when we have our own time," Underwood said. "When we get onto the field, make sure we've got the same mindset and the same page at all times. So, that's where the freedom comes from."
Underwood says the connection continues to grow with Andrew Marsh, but he's also gaining ground with JJ Buchanan, Jaime Ffrench, Travis Johnson, Salesi Moa, and Kendrick Bell. While the players are taking it upon themselves to grow closer, the offense will likewise be bolstered by new offensive coordinator Jason Beck, who turned both New Mexico and Utah into the No. 4 offenses in the country in successive years.

Whether Infantino's plans, understood by The Independent to have been in the works for over a year, even survive for that long is another matter. Infantino is also under mounting pressure from within Fifa itself. The president's long-time adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, described as a heavyweight figure within the organisation, resigned in protest on Friday. "Football has been central to my life, and after more than 35 years in banking, I understand both the value of this **** et and the consequences of giving part of it away," he said in a statement. "That is why this proposal should be rejected." If even the Fifa suits have seen enough, it tells you that Infantino has gone too far.
In their own statement in the early hours of Friday morning, Fifa provided some "clarifications" around their private investment proposals, insisting that their "planned consultation process was disrupted by incorrect media reports". But it may not stop some of Infantino's steadfast allies from switching sides. Asia will host the 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia and parts of the region have benefitted greatly from Infantino's support since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but the AFC's president, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain, has been Infantino's most vocal critic outside of Europe. A withering statement on Friday accused Fifa of "undermining" the World Cup and called for an "urgent review" into its governance.

The Miami Marlins and Telemundo have announced a local deal that will see the Marlins broadcast games over-the-air in Spanish for the first time.
The agreement will see two Marlins games air in Spanish on WSCV (Channel 51) in Miami: Sunday, Aug. 9, vs. the Los Angeles Angels at 1:40 p.m. ET and the regular-season finale on Sunday, Sept. 27, vs. the Atlanta Braves at 3:10 p.m. ET.
Unlike most Spanish-language broadcasts, the Marlins games on Telemundo will feature a dedicated broadcast team. Jose Francisco Rivera will handle play-by-play, with Daniel Álvarez-Montes providing color commentary.
"Baseball is deeply rooted in the Spanish-speaking community, and that is especially true here in South Florida," said Caroline O'Connor, Miami Marlins President of Business. "Our partnership with Telemundo 51 Miami allows us to connect with Spanish-speaking fans in a more meaningful way through Spanish-language broadcasts while expanding access to Marlins baseball across the region."

Jul. 30—Gonzaga's home opener against New Mexico State doesn't project to be one of the most compelling games on the team's nonconference calendar, but it just became significantly more important.
The Zags are set to host one of the top guard prospects in the recruiting class of 2027, Bremerton High's Jalen Davis, when they welcome the Aggies for the Nov. 7 game at McCarthey Athletic Center.
A 6-foot-3, 165-pound combo guard, Davis is taking four other official visits before closing his recruiting tour with a stop in Spokane, according to Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports.com.
Davis doesn't have dates scheduled for visits to Stanford and Ole Miss, but plans to see both schools in September, according to 247Sports. The top-rated prospect in Washington then will visit Iowa on Oct. 3 and UCLA on Oct. 16 before making the cross-state trip to Gonzaga for his only visit in November. Davis has already taken one official visit, making the short drive to Seattle to tour Washington's campus during a home football weekend.

Jul. 30—The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which came to a close in mid-July, featured a Mexican men's national team that included Alaska's own Obed Vargas Jr.
The memories his family made watching him play on the world's biggest stage for the first time will last them a lifetime, even after Mexico's team was eliminated in the round of 16.
"This was a very, very special moment for me, for my family," Obed Vargas Sr. said. "I've been in love with the sport since I was a kid, and this is actually my first World Cup ever that I'm able to actually attend in a live game."
Attending a World Cup game in his home country of Mexico fulfilled a long-held dream, but the fact that his eldest son was on the Mexican national team made the experience even more special.
"It was an incredible experience," Vargas said. "The first time we saw our son in the Azteca Stadium and singing the national anthem, it was very, very special. The fans ... rooting for the team and for Mexico. It was something that I never experienced before in my entire life."

Every major European national soccer team threatened Thursday to collectively boycott competitions organized by global soccer's nonprofit governing body FIFA over plans by the federation to sell off a minority stake in the World Cup tournament to private investors.
A source close to Joshua Kushner's company, Thrive Capital, dismissed criticism over the firm's involvement in the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) investment plan to CBS News on Thursday, hours before UEFA, the European soccer federation, announced its boycott.
Kushner is the younger brother of Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law. FIFA president Gianni Infantino's close relationship with Mr. Trump drew scrutiny throughout this summer's World Cup, which was hosted jointly by the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
"I think the first ****** umption is that Trump was involved in FFE in any capacity, which is just not accurate," the source told CBS News on Thursday. "Josh himself does not have any links with the administration, he does not have any political roles, he has not donated to them, he is not involved in any capacity. If you look at his donation record, all of the causes he has donated to are Democrat … it's kind of unfair to ****** ume a lot about somebody just because of what their brother does."
"Thrive is a pretty big investment firm. Thrive now has $60 billion ****** ets under management," the source told CBS News when pressed about whether the Kushner family name had carried weight in getting the deal with FIFA done, adding that Joshua Kushner is "a pretty successful business person in his own right."

Conservationists defending a historic tree standing in the way of President Donald Trump's border wall in Arizona began staging a "tree sit" on July 29 to keep contractors from tearing down the towering cottonwood.
The cottonwood is the last of four hardwood trees from a species that's believed to have stood alongside the U.S.-Mexico border in Lochiel, Arizona, for between 100 and 200 years. Department of Homeland Security contractors tore down the first of the three trees on July 27.
Conservationists in the area have rallied around the remaining tree, slamming Homeland Security for not picking an alternative route that does not involve cutting down the trees.
The cottonwoods have provided people a shady gathering place for generations, conservationists say. And for local wildlife, the trees are essential for the area's diverse and rare species, including potentially the few jaguars that range into the United States.
"Destroying these ancient cottonwoods is a death sentence for an entire ecosystem," said Russ McSpadden, a conservation advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity, a nonprofit founded in 1989 focused on protecting endangered species. "These magnificent cottonwoods survived centuries, nourishing wildlife through floods and drought, only to be bulldozed for the Trump administration's disastrous border wall."

It's time for the annual post to highlight how the Mountain West Conference compares to the American Athletic Conference in a variety of important categories. Since this yearly post began, the American has had the advantage overall, although the MW narrowed the gap in 2024. Which one was the top Group of 5 conference in 2024? Read below to find out.
The Mountain West and American don't have many opportunities to play each other from season to season, and it's sad that that hasn't changed over the years. In 2024, the conferences played one another four times, with two of those being the CIC Trophy games, Air Force battling Army and Navy. The other two were Boise State opening against South Florida and Colorado State taking on Texas-San Antonio. Last season, all of those games ended in losses for the Mountain West teams, which is extremely disappointing. They have now lost head-to-head matchups to the American two seasons in a row.
The American's top tier enjoyed a successful season and has been seen as a top-heavy conference for years, with this year being no different. Memphis led the way with a 12-2 record (good for a winning percentage of .857). Behind them was Navy at 11-2 (.846), and Tulane at 11-3 (.786). The three-team average ends up being a .829 score for the American. On the other side of things, UNLV was the top Mountain West team with a 10-4 record (.714 winning percentage). Then, New Mexico, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Hawaii all finished with identical 9-4 records (.692). Taking the three-team average, and it comes out to a .699 winning percentage, which is a drop from 2025. Unfortunately for the Mountain West, even a good season and a top-heavy bunch of teams, the conference couldn't measure up to the American, which takes this one once again.
Playing games against Power 4 teams is usually a great measuring stick for any mid-major conference. The Mountain West continues to have a poor showing in this category, but improved in 2025, going 4-12 in 2025. That is an increase of one win from 2024, though they played four fewer games this past season. The wins over Stanford, Cal, and UCLA (twice) represent a 25% winning percentage for the conference.
The American ended up improving as well, going from 1-14 to 6-13, which amounts to a 32% winning percentage. The additional five games against P4 teams should be noted as well. Beating Northwestern, Army, and Oklahoma State last year may not mean much, but wins over Florida, Duke, and Arkansas look impressive to varying degrees. It's nice to see both conferences improve, but the American takes this category back in 2025.

The American's top tier enjoyed a successful season and has been seen as a top-heavy conference for years, with this year being no different. Memphis led the way with a 12-2 record (good for a winning percentage of .857). Behind them was Navy at 11-2 (.846), and Tulane at 11-3 (.786). The three-team average ends up being a .829 score for the American. On the other side of things, UNLV was the top Mountain West team with a 10-4 record (.714 winning percentage). Then, New Mexico, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Hawaii all finished with identical 9-4 records (.692). Taking the three-team average, and it comes out to a .699 winning percentage, which is a drop from 2025. Unfortunately for the Mountain West, even a good season and a top-heavy bunch of teams, the conference couldn't measure up to the American, which takes this one once again.
Playing games against Power 4 teams is usually a great measuring stick for any mid-major conference. The Mountain West continues to have a poor showing in this category, but improved in 2025, going 4-12 in 2025. That is an increase of one win from 2024, though they played four fewer games this past season. The wins over Stanford, Cal, and UCLA (twice) represent a 25% winning percentage for the conference.
The American ended up improving as well, going from 1-14 to 6-13, which amounts to a 32% winning percentage. The additional five games against P4 teams should be noted as well. Beating Northwestern, Army, and Oklahoma State last year may not mean much, but wins over Florida, Duke, and Arkansas look impressive to varying degrees. It's nice to see both conferences improve, but the American takes this category back in 2025.

Mexico all but booked their ticket to the Quarterfinals of the CONCACAF U20 Championship after defeating Costa Rica by a 2-0 score. Mexico overcame going down to 10 players to get a victory that place them at 6 points, basically guaranteeing them to be at worst one of the two best third placed teams and thus the ticket to the Quarterfinals. Mexico will look to win the group against Guatemala on Thursday while Costa Rica faces off against Antigua and Barbuda earlier that day.
The 1st half started with Mexico coming out with most of the starting 11 from their opener against Antigua and Barbuda. Off a free kick, a cross into the area was almost deflected in by Gabriel Sibaja, as Costa Rica had the first chance of the match. Off a counter, Kionell Estrada got off a right footed shot in the area that went wide. A right footed shot from outside the area from Hugo Camberos went well wide. Both teams traded possession as the match became very even. A bad clearance allowed Matias Cordero to get the ball in the area but his shot was well saved by Mexico's goalkeeper, Juan Liceaga. After a harsh foul, there was a short scuffle between teams that ended with David Carro getting a Yellow card. The match continued to be extremely chippy as Mexico couldn't get going against Costa Rica's physical play. From outside the area, Samir Inda got off a great left footed shot that was deflected off the post. Mexico started to dominate possession as Costa Rica sat back and waited to counter. After a cross into the area was won by Santiago Sandoval, he would get brought down in the area by Adrian Espinoza and a Penalty Kick was given to Mexico. Hugo Camberos stepped up to take the PK and got off a thunderous right footed shot that went past Costa Rica's goalkeeper, Ian O'Rourke to score and give Mexico the 1-o lead. From outside the area, Juan Echivelstre got off a great right footed shot that forced O'Rourke to make a great save. Emmanuel Hernandez answered with a right footed shot from outside the area that Liceaga made a great save on it. Ashton Daniels arrives as the latest attempt to solve the quarterback position, five new starters have to come together on the offensive line, the defense is banking on a young group taking a Year 2 leap and hanging over all of it is a coaching staff that most everyone outside the building believes is operating without a safety net.

After an incredibly successful North American World Cup that saw record ratings and revenue, the money-hungry governing body of world soccer is on the hunt for more. This year's World Cup was a fever dream when it came to the control that FIFA had in squeezing out every possible ounce of revenue. There was controversy over insanely high ticket prices, blacking out of stadium names that weren't FIFA sponsors, and, of course, the institution of hydration breaks that were an excuse to break up the game into a four-quarter affair filled with even more commercial advertising.
But after all the drama and controversy, the tournament itself was a remarkable celebration of the best of sport thanks to the athletes and fans that came to the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Spain's victory and the incredible superstar performances made it a truly generational event that will be remembered fondly as one of the best international sporting events in years.

By his own admission, Trump stepped in to help get USMNT star Folarin Balogun's suspension postponed after the electrifying goal scorer was **** sed a red card, resulting in him being deemed eligible for the U.S.'s round of 16 match against Belgium. Many people pointed toward Trump's connection to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who lobbied for Trump to receive the **** el Peace Prize and gave him the newly established FIFA Peace Prize, as a reason why Balogun's suspension was overturned.
Now, The Times' Martyn Ziegler is reporting on a **** ing "scheme" involving Infantino and people with close ties to the Trump administration.
"EXCLUSIVE: Fifa's president Gianni Infantino is planning to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors under a scheme that could potentially earn him tens of millions of pounds. Investor discussions held with figures close to the Trump administration, say sources," Ziegler reported.

After a dominant run through the East Zone Tournament, the Hagerstown PONY-13 All-Stars will fly to California to play in the PONY-13 World Series in Carlsbad starting Friday, July 31.
"I don't think it will set in completely until they get out to California and see the Dominican Republic, ****** an, France, Mexico," said manager Jeff Mills. "When they start seeing these guys they get to play against, it's going to kind of hit them. But I don't think these boys will get nervous."
Hagerstown outscored its opponents by a combined 39-8 in the East Zone. Hagerstown broke a 4-4 tie with a pair of runs in the sixth inning of a 7-4 win over Athletix in the opener, then blew open its other two games with 10-run innings while defeating the Ohio Prospects 16-1 and Athletix 16-3 in the ****** le game.
"They played great the whole weekend," Mills said. "They're very mature for their age. They never got down at any point in the tournament, just stayed strong. The pitchers threw great. ****** ody had a really rough outing. Defensively, there were only two or three errors. They're solid the whole way around.
"When they put up 10 runs on Ohio, that was a big confidence boost because at that point they knew they'd have to get beat twice in the championship round. Then they put up 10 again."

Erling Haaland got the guests do the famous Viking row at the wedding party of his Manchester City team-mate Gianluigi Donnarumma.
A video released by broadcasters Sky Italia on Saturday showed Norway forward Haaland set the beat with a drum, to which the guests made rowing motions and chanted "Ro".
The Viking row was started by Norwegian fans at the recent World Cup and the team joined in after matches. Norway reached the quarter-finals of the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Jul. 24—When Logan Angelo stopped playing baseball at Creston High School, the 2013 graduate gained his first job in entertainment production as public address announcer at the home baseball games.
While announcing the game in the press box, Angelo also served as a DJ, playing digital music tracks via computerized software. At this year's team banquet, coach Brandon Phipps praised current announcer Cory Latham for his work in providing "a true entertainment event along with announcing the baseball game, like you expect from a big-time venue."
Fast forward 13 years, and the venue doesn't get any bigger than where Angelo worked for more than five weeks this summer at the Houston venue for seven FIFA World Cup matches. Angelo was hired by FIFA as stadium entertainment technical operations manager at the home of the NFL Houston Texans (labeled Houston Stadium by FIFA's non-sponsor policy, but officially now NRG Stadium after several years as Reliant Stadium.)
"This was the largest sports event ever," Angelo said, "when you consider it was held in 16 stadiums across three countries (United States, Mexico and Canada), with 48 teams playing a total of 104 matches over 39 days (June 11 to July 19). It's even a larger scale than the Olympics, when you consider the number of fans traveling for this international sports event. And, it turned out to be a successful event. The cities did a great job as hosts."
For perspective, the World Cup final between Argentina and Spain averaged 66.4 million television viewers in the U.S. on Fox and Telemundo combined. Other than Super Bowls, this is the largest sports audience since the 1994 Winter Olympics (skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan).

Six years after the pandemic pushed heavily leveraged companies into distress, some of the lenders that took control are beginning to cash out.
Tailored Brands, owner of clothing chain Men's Wearhouse, filed on July 10 to return to the public markets. Credit investor Silver Point Capital, which has owned the business since its 2020 restructuring, will remain the principal shareholder.
Strategic Value Partners and Sixth Street Partners sold $743 million of LATAM Airlines stock in a secondary equity offering in February, winding down a stake they inherited through the bankruptcy of Latin America's largest airline holding company in 2022.
Aeroméxico, whose largest creditor was Apollo Global Management, has traded in New York since November. The listing raised $223 million and came three years after Mexico's flagship carrier embarked on a $5 billion post-bankruptcy fleet modernization plan.

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Through two games, Team USA is making life in WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup group play look easy. The USA had outscored its opponents 46-7.
Thursday night, before a packed house of 3400 fans, they dominated Mexico 24-5 in five innings. Team USA struck for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and then nearly doubled that by scoring 13 runs in the second inning.
Catch Denae Benites homered, and she drove in six runs. Outfielder Ashton Lansdell homered, had two more hits, and she drove in seven runs. Third baseman Kate Blunt reached base four times, and she drove in a pair of runs. Outfielder Ashanthy Vizcarrondo added two hits and two RBIs.
Team USA will next face Australia at 7 p.m. Friday at Rivets Stadium. Australia is also 2-0.

Diego Pavia needs a new team.
The Albuquerque native and Heisman Trophy runner-up was waived Thursday by the Baltimore Ravens, the team announced via a report on its website.
A record-setting quarterback at Vanderbilt and New Mexico State, Pavia was signed as an undrafted free agent in late April to compete for Baltimore's third-string quarterback position behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. He was later passed over the summer by Skylar Thompson and Joe Fangano, another undrafted free agent from Connecticut.
Pavia can now either sign with another NFL team to compete for a roster spot or possibly take his talents to another league: For instance, the Canadian Football League's Winnipeg Blue Bombers added him to their negotiation list in 2024, meaning the club will have exclusive rights to negotiate with him if he wishes to pursue an opportunity in the league.
The majority of NFL training camps begin next week.

New Mexico offensive ****** yst Kiel McDonald is leaving to coach Texas State's running backs, head coach Jason Eck confirmed to the Journal on Thursday.
McDonald, 43, will coach the Bobcats' running backs after joining the Lobos' staff earlier this season as a volunteer offensive ****** istant. Prior to UNM, he served as the running backs coach at Southern Cal, Utah and the Los Angeles Chargers.
A former cornerback at Sacramento State and Idaho, McDonald played under Eck for one season with the Vandals in 2006. The latter served as Idaho's tight ends coach and run game coordinator at the time.
