Health policy has quietly become a stock-moving variable in 2026, and the figures are significant enough to matter. Approximately 2.6 million Americans discontinued ACA marketplace coverage this year after increased pandemic-era subsidies ended at the end of 2025, with health policy experts predicting that total enrollment would decrease to between 16.5 million and 17.5 million by year-end. Meanwhile, the Urban Institute has projected that 4.8 million more people will be uninsured in 2026 as a direct consequence of the lapsed subsidies, with certain HealthCare.gov-reliant states witnessing enrollment losses of 20% or more.
Whether this translates into fewer elective medical treatments is now a hotly debated topic in the healthcare industry, with Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) emerging as the evident casualty. The company's shares plunged more than 12% before the bell on July 17, despite Intuitive maintaining its global procedure-growth prediction for its da Vinci surgical robots. Instead, the selloff was driven by the company's own admission that changes in insurance coverage could impact demand.
US da Vinci procedure growth slowed to roughly 12% in the second quarter, down from where Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) expected to be at the beginning of the year, with a focus on surgeries that patients may defer. On the July 16 call, CEO David Rosa told ******* ysts that customer conversations indicated that fluctuating patient coverage and premium dynamics affect "when patients seek care," as opposed to if they seek it at all.
That reaction came at an awkward time, as a highly public disagreement was already taking place in the sector. Abbott, a major medical device and diagnostics manufacturer, had argued recently that blaming industry-wide procedure weakness on ACA disenrollment was a "flawed ******* umption." HCA Healthcare, the largest for-profit hospital operator in the United States, took the opposite stance, warning earlier of lower surgical demand and an increase in uninsured patients when pandemic-era subsidies expired.
Intuitive's own results now appear to support the HCA side of the argument, at least in procedures when patients can choose to delay. Stifel's response immediately reflected the tension: the firm reduced its price objective to $550 from $670 on July 17 while keeping a Buy rating on the company's shares, despite Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ:ISRG) exceeding expectations in revenue, earnings, system placements, and procedure growth in the same quarter. Both US procedure and installed-base growth have slowed since the 2020-2021 COVID era, with management blaming the slowdown on ACA disenrollment and the basic law of large numbers as the installed base matures.

Entries from early 2020 in a now-exposed personal diary kept by Dr. Anthony Fauci during the COVID-19 pandemic show that he privately estimated the death rate from the illness was significantly lower than what he told Congress under oath only weeks later.
Fauci, 85, has come under intense scrutiny for years regarding his approach leading the U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic, and his alleged links to the Chinese lab where the virus originated. He will return to Capitol Hill on Wednesday before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee to speak about his newly publicized personal records.
"The stated mortality over all of this when you look at all the data including China is about three percent. It first started off as two and three," Fauci said in testimony before the House Oversight Committee on March 11, 2020, according to a transcript of the hearing.
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci prepares to testify before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee about the ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill on November 4, 2021, in Washington, D.C. Senators questioned Fauci and other witnesses about the approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine for children between 5 and 11 years old this week.

LONDON, July 24 (Reuters) - Renewed hostilities in the Gulf have revived stagflation talk, dimming hopes the interim deal between the U.S. and Iran had come in time for the world economy to avoid elevated inflation alongside stagnant economic growth.
Instead, oil prices are back at $100, European gas prices are set for their biggest monthly jump since March and government borrowing costs are at multi-year highs on inflation angst as tensions escalate once more.
Trade frictions are adding to the uncertainty facing consumers, businesses and investors. The U.S. on Friday imposed new tariffs of 10% and 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners, including the European Union and China, likely raising prices further.
"Stagflation risk has been very much there for each economy since March, in different ways," said Alessia Berardi, head of global macroeconomics, Amundi Investment Institute.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — In 2025, the American Conference became the first conference in college sports to institute a "minimum investment" threshold for its members.
That meant every school in the conference would be required to spend at least $10 million over a three-year period on revenue sharing. Some schools, like Memphis, cleared that in one year. Others were further away, but Pernetti told The Commercial Appeal at conference media days on July 24 that it's gone well so far.
There have been conversations about expanding it, he said.
"We have talked at our annual meeting with the ADs about the idea of, 'Okay, we're a year in to this thing. We're further ahead than everybody expected we would be. We should have two conversations. The minimum should maybe be higher, and then do we want to designate specific minimums to specific sports."
Asked specifically about a minimum investment threshold for just basketball, Pernetti said those have only been "conversations" and it doesn't mean anything is imminent.

Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) could support UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham's plans to channel more investment into towns, infrastructure and local economies, but are urging him not to repeat the tax mistakes they say damaged business confidence under the previous government.
That is according to a new ICAEW poll of 875 members conducted between 6 July and 10 July 2026, which found that business taxation is seen as the most urgent issue for the new administration.
Nearly 57% of the respondents said easing the tax burden on businesses should be Burnham's top priority on taking office.
Members said repeated changes to the tax system in recent years had created uncertainty for companies and weakened willingness to invest.
They also cited last year's increase in employer National Insurance contributions, which some described as "crippling" for small businesses. Respondents said the rise constrained hiring, investment and expansion.

For retirees, healthcare is one of the biggest expenses — and the costs keep spiraling.
On average, a 65-year-old who leaves the workforce this year may need $185,500 in savings to cover out-of-pocket healthcare expenses throughout retirement, up 7.5% from last year's expectation of $172,500, according to Fidelity's annual survey of estimated healthcare costs in retirement published on Tuesday.
"That number can feel intimidating, but the goal is not to scare people," Chandler Riggs, a financial planner at Fidelity Investments, told Yahoo Finance.
While panic isn't the aim, the reality is that few retirees have budgeted for that kind of payout. Yet roughly 15% of the average retiree's annual expenses will be health-related, per Fidelity.
"In our report published this spring, the expense that stood out for retirees was healthcare," Craig Copeland, director of wealth benefits research at the Employee Benefit Research Institute, told Yahoo Finance. "In fact, nearly 4 in 10 retirees said that these expenses were higher than they expected when they first retired."

(NewsNation) — Entrepreneur and "longevity guru" Bryan Johnson has taken a different approach to how he will manage his autoimmune disease: cloning himself.
"I just cloned myself … as a newborn," Johnson, 48, wrote to his followers on X. He added that for now, "baby Bryan" currently lives in a Petri dish.
In early July, Johnson announced he'd been diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis, an incurable condition in which the immune system attacks the stomach's acid-producing cells. According to the National Institutes of Health, it can cause iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies, leading to anemia.
He attributed his diagnosis to poor eating and being stressed as a father of three.

Praetorian Capital, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. In the quarter of 2026, the Praetorian Capital Fund LLC (the "Fund") depreciated by 4.39% net of fees. The firm anticipates significant volatility from quarter to quarter due to the Fund's concentrated portfolio approach and emphasis on asymmetric opportunities. Both the Event-Driven book and the fund's core portfolio declined moderately in the quarter. The letter highlighted the market's complexity and noted a setback in the portfolio this quarter despite strong first-quarter earnings. Conversely, the letter also noted that the AI buildout represented a substantial capital misallocation. In addition, please check the Fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Praetorian Capital highlighted Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI). Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) is an educational institution that provide training and support services for students in transportation, skilled trades and healthcare education programs. On July 17, 2026, Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) closed at $40.31 per share. One-month return of Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) was 0.27%, and its shares gained 25.17% over the past 52 weeks. Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) has a market capitalization of $2.25 billion.
Praetorian Capital stated the following regarding Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Technical Colleges; Lincoln Educational Services (LINC – USA) and Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (NYSE:UTI). These two technical colleges are helping to train the next generation of skilled tradespeople and medical workers. As AI reduces the demand for office workers, many millions of existing workers must be reskilled, while high school graduates will naturally seek out better job opportunities that offer higher wages, with less career risk.
LINC and UTI are the two largest technical colleges in the US. I expect them to continue opening new campuses and growing student counts. Based on management guidance, they're both quite cheap looking out a few years, net of startup costs for new campuses. I think they'll dramatically overshoot guidance in terms of new student starts, utilization and recruitment costs, leading to substantial margin growth on relatively fixed-cost structures."

Agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were preparing to question a British zoologist and disease ecology expert upon his return to the United States from the World Health Organization's investigation into the origins of COVID-19, before the FBI intervened and asked agents to stand down, according to files released Monday by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.
"They told the public a COVID lab leak 'wasn't plausible,'" Rand wrote on X. "Their own private messages say otherwise. Today I'm launching The Reading Room where the public can review records related to my ongoing investigation – not just conclusions but the actual documents."
The documents show CBP's National Targeting Center flagged Peter Daszak as "a high person of interest" ahead of his Feb. 5, 2021, arrival at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Daszak, the former president of EcoHealth Alliance, was flagged because of more than 15 years of collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) and his longstanding relationship with its lead researcher, Zhengli Shi, as well as his role as principal investigator on National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants funding bat coronavirus research in China.

The Supreme Court agreed Monday to hear an appeal from an Alaskan bush pilot whose plane was seized by authorities after they discovered it was bound for a remote, dry village with beer on board.
The appeal from the 82-year-old pilot, Kenneth Jouppi, could have national implications if the 6-3 conservative court limits the ability of state and local governments to rely on ******* et forfeiture. Jouppi claims that the taking of his $95,000 Cessna for what amounted to a six-pack of beer violated the 8th Amendment's bar on excessive fines.
The Supreme Court is likely to hear oral arguments in the case later this year or early next — and hand down a decision by next summer.
"The Excessive Fines Clause of the Constitution was built for cases like this," said Sam Gedge, a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, which is representing the pilot. "As government agencies increasingly exploit fines and forfeitures to pad their budgets, it's vital that the Supreme Court make clear that the Excessive Fines Clause is a meaningful check on government overreach."
Jouppi says that the Budweiser and Bud Light found on his plane, which was packaged with other groceries, belonged to a passenger. He said that most of it was out of sight, but state police said one six-pack was in plain view inside a grocery bag. One trooper claimed that Jouppi would "have to be blind" not to have seen at least some of the alcohol and that "pilots with that bad of eyesight just don't fly."

LIMA, Peru (AP) — A 5.5 magnitude earthquake shook the Andes region of Peru, killing at least six people, injuring more than 30 and displacing 300, authorities said Sunday.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake struck on Saturday at 9:24 p.m., with its epicenter located 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) west-southwest of the city of Sicaya in Huancayo province. It was 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) deep.
Peru's National Civil Defense Institute said in a statement the total number of missing is still unknown. Several buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage, including the historic "Santiago de León" church and former convent in Chongos Bajo, which was built in 1565 and designated as national heritage site for being a 16th century "architectural gem."
Luis Vásquez, head of the local civil defense office, told journalists that the use of rustic adobe materials in construction in that Andean area "has contributed to the greater impact and damage."
Earthquakes are frequent in Peru, which is located in the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire."

Luis Vásquez, head of the local civil defense office, told journalists that the use of rustic adobe materials in construction in that Andean area "has contributed to the greater impact and damage."
Earthquakes are frequent in Peru, which is located in the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire."

Crude oil inventories in the United States fell by 1.7 million barrels during the week ending July 10, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Commercial crude stockpiles now stand at 409.7 million barrels, leaving inventories 6% below the five-year seasonal average despite ongoing uncertainty in global energy markets.
The latest government data followed the American Petroleum Institute's (API) report released a day earlier, which estimated a more modest crude inventory draw of 564,000 barrels over the same reporting period.
Oil prices moved lower in Wednesday morning trading even as geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran intensified. At 10:45 a.m. in New York, Brent crude was trading at $84.08 per barrel, down $0.65 (0.77%) on the day, although it remained approximately $7 per barrel higher than the same time a week earlier. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also edged lower, slipping $0.21 (0.26%) to $79.13 per barrel.
The EIA reported that U.S. gasoline inventories declined by 1.5 million barrels, following the previous week's draw of 1.9 million barrels. Average gasoline production also eased, falling to 9.6 million barrels per day.
Meanwhile, middle distillate inventories increased by 4.6 million barrels, with daily production averaging 5.3 million barrels. Even after the latest build, distillate inventories remain 11% below the five-year average for this time of year.

Nearly three out of four households in the U.S. fall short of having "essential wealth," or enough money to weather financial shocks; support their families' physical and mental health; and access such opportunities as education, homeownership and retirement savings that can build even more wealth over time, according to a new report by the Aspen Institute.
While many workers focus on their salaries, achieving financial well-being requires another "cushion that income alone cannot provide" — it requires wealth, including savings, investments and other ***** ets, according to the report.

(NewsNation) — The tantalizing prospect of inspecting a mysterious monolith on the surface of Mars moon Phobos was proposed earlier this century but never took off — to the disappointment of theoretical physicist Maaneli "Max" Derakhshani.
The 300-foot-tall anomaly, which stands in stark relief to its lunar surroundings, has intrigued observers for years. More than a few have likened the object to the iconic "monolith" from "2001: A ******* e Odyssey." In that 1968 film, it was a sort of alarm mechanism on Earth's moon to alert aliens about human progress.
NASA has classified the Phobos monolith as a boulder. But Derakhshani notes the ******* e agency and the SETI Institute — a private organization looking for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence in the universe — were supportive of an effort in the early-2000s to send a robotic lander to the unusual feature of Phobos to take a physical sample for ******* ysis.
Mysterious moon towers: Are there bases on the lunar surface?
Proponents at the time tried to downplay the potential mission as, "Oh, this is purely geological study," Derakhshani told "Reality Check with Ross Coulthart" recently.

Manufacturers in Mexico ***** embled 15,262 heavy-duty trucks and buses during June, a 7.6% increase from the same month in 2025, according to from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and the National ***** ociation of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Producers (Anpact).
Exports of Mexican-made trucks climbed 3.2% year over year to 12,730 units. Nearly all of Mexico's heavy-duty vehicle exports continue to be destined for the United States, making U.S. freight demand the industry's primary growth driver.
"June closed with clear signs of recovery," Anpact President Rogelio Arzate said during a news conference on June 9.
The June performance also marked the first time since August 2024 that Mexico's heavy-duty vehicle industry recorded year-over-year growth simultaneously in wholesale sales, production, exports and retail sales, according to Anpact.

Iran has reportedly instructed Yemen's Houthi terrorists to prepare to close a critical Red Sea gateway if the United States attacks Iranian power infrastructure, Reuters reported, a threat experts warn could sharply disrupt global shipping even if the group cannot completely seal the waterway.
"This threat should be taken seriously," Nadwa Al-Dawsari of the Middle East Institute told Fox News Digital. "With recent escalation and U.S. strikes on Iran, Tehran has already signaled that the Bab al-Mandab could become part of its response."
Three sources told Reuters on Thursday that Iran's leadership had discussed using the Houthis to shut the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and recently conveyed the request to the group. A source close to the Houthis said missiles and drones had been deployed near the waterway and that the group was awaiting an order to begin attacking shipping.

Jeffrey Lurie has earned one of ESPN’s top humanitarian honors for work that has stretched well beyond football and into autism research, care, and support for families across the world. The Philadelphia Eagles owner and chairman was named this year’s recipient of the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award at the 2026 Sports Humanitarian Awards during ESPYS week. Lurie was joined at the event by Stuart Scott’s daughters, as well as Jason and Kylie Kelce, as he received recognition tied to one of the franchise’s most important off-field missions.
The award honors people who have used innovation, risk-taking, and the power of sports to help disadvantaged communities while reflecting values such as fairness, ethics, respect, and fellowship. For Lurie, the recognition is connected to his leadership with the Eagles Autism Foundation and the Lurie Autism Institute, two initiatives that have helped make Philadelphia one of the sports world’s most visible platforms for autism awareness, research, and care.
The Eagles Autism Challenge began in May 2018, and the Eagles Autism Foundation, founded in 2019, has raised more than $56 million through efforts such as the annual Eagles Autism Challenge. The foundation has helped fund more than 223 research projects and community grants worldwide, according to the team, while participant-raised funds from the organization’s signature charity event are invested into autism research and care programs.
Lurie’s impact expanded significantly in 2025, when the Lurie family donated $50 million to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Penn Medicine to establish the Lurie Autism Institute. The joint initiative between the two hospitals was described as the largest single donation to U.S. academic medical centers focused on autism research across the lifespan.
In the past decade, Lurie’s autism-focused efforts have contributed to more than $106 million in research and care. Under his leadership, the Eagles have made the Eagles Autism Challenge a franchise-wide initiative, with players, coaches, executives, and staff members participating in the annual event.

DAKAR, July 13 (Reuters) - The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to two more northeastern provinces, Haut-Uele and Tshopo, the country's public health institute said in its latest report.
The number of confirmed Ebola cases across the country rose to 1,926, including 702 deaths, official data showed late on Sunday. Four cases were recorded in Tshopo, including two deaths, with one death confirmed in Haut-Uele, as of Saturday.
The latest Ebola outbreak, Congo's 17th, was declared on May 15 and has been largely concentrated in Ituri province, with cases also reported in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.
The often fatal viral disease spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from infected people or animals and causes symptoms that can include high fever, vomiting and internal and external bleeding.
Reuters reported in late June that Congolese health authorities had started tracing people potentially exposed to Ebola in Tshopo and Haut-Uele, but until now the two provinces had not been included in the government's daily reports.

Increasingly, retirees are turning to financial advisers for the first time to help navigate an array of issues as they step out of the workforce.
Nearly half want guidance on saving and investing after leaving their workplace retirement plan, according to a report published by the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI).
Roughly a third want advice for what to do with the money in their former workplace plan, while nearly 3 in 10 want a withdrawal strategy that turns savings into retirement income. Others seek help with taxes, long-term care planning, debt reduction, or estate planning.
"Going from a dependable regular income to no income stream at all can be terrifying," said Andrea Billquist, a financial planner in College Park, Texas. "With this new retirement reality, many quickly realize that they have more questions than answers and identify that they would like advice and support to make the right steps."
Yahoo Finance reached out to financial advisers about what questions are top of mind for these former do-it-yourself folks.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper said he did not know a Cameo video he recorded would be used by FanDuel as a reward for a VIP customer who later sued the sportsbook, saying it took advantage of his gambling addiction.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported last week that a fan named Terry Thompson had wagered $18.5 million with FanDuel and was eventually rewarded with a personalized video from Harper.
In the video, Harper addressed the fan by name and even mentioned the man's young son. Harper shared a screenshot Monday of the request on Cameo, an app that allows users to pay celebrities to record custom videos.
"Had I known FanDuel's true intent, I would not have made the video," Harper said. "The same is true had I known anything about Terry or his situation."
The Inquirer reported Thompson lost $1.5 million, according to a lawsuit that the Public Health Advocacy Institute filed in March in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia on behalf of Thompson and against FanDuel and DraftKings. Thompson also was reported to have lost money to DraftKings.

When things go wrong for owner operators and small carriers, the right insurance is a financial foundation that can help keep a business solvent. In today's freight environment, equipment, insurance and loss costs have increased, creating challenges for truckers.
According to the American Trucking Research Institute (ATRI), insurance premiums rose 3% in 2024 to a record 10.2 cents per mile. Early 2025 data shows that trend accelerating, with carriers reporting a 5.8% year-over-year increase in Q1 2025.
Contributing to those premiums is the average cost of an accident, which has increased due, in part, to a rise in repair costs, medical costs, and litigation.
In that environment, the wrong insurance coverage structure can put a business under. The right coverage structure, tailored to how a carrier actually operates, can be the difference between recovering from a bad day and closing the doors.
