The ex-Green Beret who led an outdoor military-style workout at Arizona State University says he left before a hockey player collapsed at the track and was rushed to the hospital.
Tim Ziesel had wrapped up the first day of a three-day "team-building" routine even as other exercises continued, his lawyer told The Arizona Republic.
About 20 minutes after that, Matthew Mayich suffered an apparent cardiac event, Phoenix lawyer Buddy Rake said.
"He didn't observe anyone passing out," Rake said. "This was not a Green Beret or SEAL workout. Far from it. … The head coach, ***** istant coaches and medical were always present."
Ziesel, who led a similar volunteer routine for the ASU hockey team in 2025, ran players through 45-50 minutes of sprints, push-ups and flutter kicks. He also had them lift and carry teammates, Rake said. Later, exercises involving medicine ***** were used, but Ziesel was gone, he said.

Tua Tagovailoa will start on Friday versus his former team, the Dolphins, the preseason finale. This is notoriously a spot where the starting QB would sit and rest for Week 1. It also appears Michael Penix Jr. will not play on Friday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Rap also said Tua hasn't looked good during camp and preseason, leading Atlanta toward Penix as the starter.
Penix is participating in 11-on-11 drills at practice and looks good, per Rapoport, but hasn't seen live action. It's looking like he'll be ready to play Week 1 coming off another torn ACL suffered last season. If Penix is good to go, he could be the starter to open 2026 against the Steelers. That could bode well for the Falcons' passing game if Penix is healthy and slinging the rock — most notably for Drake London and Kyle Pitts Sr. Penix isn't anyone you should consider in fantasy outside of deep 2-QB leagues, but is a name to file away as a potential waiver in some cases (if he starts).

ATLANTA (AP) — Chris Sale struck out 11 in a five-hit shutout, Drake Baldwin launched a leadoff homer against Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and the Atlanta Braves edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 on Thursday night to complete a three-game sweep.
Sale (13-9) did not walk a batter. The left-hander posted his fourth double-digit strikeout game this season and the 95th of his career, which ranks seventh all-time.
Fans in the sellout crowd of 39,650 cheered when Sale strolled out to the mound for the ninth inning even though relievers were ready in the Atlanta bullpen. Braves manager Walt Weiss stuck with his ace after Freddie Freeman singled leading off the ninth.
Teoscar Hernández popped out, pinch-runner Alek Thomas was out at second on Miguel Rojas' fielder's-choice grounder and Sale struck out Alex Call for his 17th complete game and first since 2019 with Boston.
Baldwin lined the first pitch from Yamamoto (12-8) into the right-field Chop House restaurant. It was Baldwin's fourth leadoff shot this season and 22nd homer overall. Yamamoto allowed only four hits with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Chris Sale is a consummate ace. It seems unlikely that anyone would contest this at this point, but if they ever do… just point 'em at this game. In a marquee pitching matchup that featured Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the other side, it was Sale and the Braves that prevailed, as the grizzled southpaw gave Atlanta its first complete game shutout since Max Fried's performance in a 5-0 win over the Marlins in April 2024.
This one, though, was a lot tighter. In fact, there was only one run scored in this game… and it came on the first pitch Yamamoto delivered to a Braves batter. That pitch was a hanging splitter, and Drake Baldwin was either expecting a get-me-over or just did an excellent job if he wasn't, launching an absolute no-doubter Chop House-ward for a solo shot. No one else crossed the plate in this game, or even got close to crossing the plate.
That said, this game was about Chris Sale. It was kind of the Chris Sale Game, except that really, he gives you a superlative performance so often that many games are the Chris Sale Game. Against an offense that ranks first or second in pretty much everything, he showed up, showed out, and dominated. He was actually pretty close to a Maddux (shutout on fewer than 100 pitches) until some drama late.
He breezed through the first on nine pitches, with a strikeout, two first-pitch groundouts, and a soft single by Mookie Betts. He struck out two more in the second, working around an overcooked slider that grazed Alex Call on the toe with two outs. He struck out the side on 12 pitches in the third: two three-pitch strikeouts sandwiching a longer plate appearance by Shohei Ohtani. In the fourth, Betts led off with a no-man's land bloop that went for a double (and nearly got Betts thrown out as he took a big turn around second and had to scramble back to the bag). Not to worry, Sale threw just seven more pitches to end the inning, with a couple of easy flyouts chased down by his defense around a strikeout.
Two more quick outs started the fifth, before catcher Ben Rortvedt knocked a liner to left for a single. That brought up Shohei Ohtani, and Sale delivered his outing in microcosm against one of the game's best: he got ahead with a get-me-over fastball, then painted two perfect fastballs on the outer edge. Neither was called a strike, neither was challenged by Baldwin behind the dish. So, Sale got Ohtani to graze a slider, and then obliterated him with 100 mph about chin-high. Then he went back to business as usual in the sixth: another three-pitch strikeout, two other quick field outs.

"Untouchable" defined the performance of Chris Sale, outdueling Yoshinobu Yamamoto in a battle of aces that lived up to expectations as the Braves won 1-0. Raising their respective games up to the occasion, Yamamoto and Sale made true on the standard **** umption that great pitching beats great hitting, operating as the two best players in the game. An early ambush from leadoff hitter Drake Baldwin proved the difference maker, homering in the bottom of the opening frame on the first pitch Yamamoto threw.
Facing the likes of Sale and Yamamoto, one cannot afford to get behind in the count, and it's with that thought in mind that both teams shared a similar approach early in the game. The Dodgers and Braves came out swinging early and often, trying to avoid any two-strike counts against pitchers with different paths to the same destination: one of utter domination.
In that approach, Atlanta was able to draw first blood when Drake Baldwin guessed right and crushed a not-so-well-located heater in the zone. While on a fundamental level it makes sense to be more willing to swing early as a team, the risks of it are fairly clear, and the Dodgers suffered from it. Aggressive swinging ensures you won't be capable of drawing out long at-bats, and you're a few lousy contacts away from allowing the opposing starter to go deeper into the game than he normally would, maintaining a low pitch count. And Sale did exactly that, with his first complete game shutout since 2019.
One of the rare Dodgers with success against Sale in this game was Mookie Betts, twice taking advantage of down-and-in off-speed pitches that didn't quite break enough. Still, without leaving the yard, Mookie was just a helpless spectator on the basepaths, which included getting stranded at second after a leadoff double in the fourth.
If players ever try to downplay the extra significance of certain moments, point to what we saw from Sale against Shohei Ohtani in the fifth inning as an argument against it. Hitting with one on and two outs, Ohtani was punched out by Sale on a 100 mph fastball up above the zone, Sale's fastest pitch in nearly a decade, giving Ohtani all it had and then some.

Gabriel India has struck a joint venture deal with South Korea's HL Klemove as it accelerates its expansion beyond core components into advanced mobility and automotive electronics.
As part of the transaction, the Anand Group company will buy a 30% minus one share of the total paid up share capital of HL Klemove India for $98.4m.
In a stock exchange filing, Gabriel India said the alliance is a "significant step" in its "strategy to expand its presence across high-growth automotive segments and participate in the growing demand for autonomous driving solutions including advanced driver **** istance systems (ADAS), and automotive electronic products through this joint venture".
The JV will develop, manufacture and market a range of autonomous driving and automotive electronics offerings tailored for India, including radar modules, front cameras, LiDAR, and automated driving and parking control units that integrate ADAS software.
Beyond ADAS hardware and software, the partnership will also produce key electronic control and sensing products used across modern vehicle platforms – such as brake ECUs, steering ECUs, chassis control units and torque sensors.

Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) jumped 12.6% to a record $152.20 on August 19 after a pivotal melanoma trial validated intismeran autogene, the individualized mRNA cancer therapy developed with Moderna. In the 1,137-patient Phase 3 INTerpath-001 study, intismeran plus Keytruda produced statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in recurrence-free survival and distant-metastasis-free survival compared with Keytruda alone. No new safety concerns emerged. Investors are now asking whether intismeran can turn Keytruda from a drug approaching a patent cliff into the foundation of a personalized-cancer platform.
That distinction matters because Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) generated $31.68 billion from Keytruda and Keytruda Qlex in 2025, nearly half of the company's sales. In the U.S., biosimilar competition could begin after Keytruda's primary compound patent expires in December 2028, although biosimilars have already entered some smaller international markets. A successful combination could support continued use of the franchise without removing the need for other growth engines.
The bullish case for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) is that intismeran adds a personalized immune response to a checkpoint inhibitor already embedded across oncology. The treatment is designed from the unique mutations in each patient's tumor and encodes as many as 34 neoantigens, training the immune system to recognize tumor cells while Keytruda removes a brake on the immune response.
Earlier Phase 2b data showed a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death and a 59% reduction in distant metastasis or death at five years. Phase 3 confirmation makes the approach more credible for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) beyond melanoma. The company is also studying intismeran combinations in non-small cell lung, bladder and renal-cell cancers. Success across several tumor types could create a portfolio of Keytruda combinations rather than a single indication.
That would give Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) another lifecycle-management tool alongside Keytruda Qlex and newer oncology ***** ets. It also strengthens the argument that Keytruda can remain commercially relevant after standalone pembrolizumab faces lower-priced competition.

The Atlanta Braves just had a brutal stretch of games where they allowed the Philadelphia Phillies to make up significant ground in the NL East.
Heading into games on Wednesday, August 26, the Braves were just 4.5 games up on the Phillies. With a month to go and seven games against the Phillies, that's plenty of time for the Braves to lose their lead.
If that were to happen, it might not be due to the starting rotation, as many fans would believe after the trade deadline. Instead, as Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller highlighted, it could be their lineup, with "too many holes," that causes the team's regression.
"Atlanta Braves: Too Many Holes in the Lineup," Miller writes. "During the 45-21 start to the season, the Braves offense was relentless, averaging 5.2 runs per game. But since then, Drake Baldwin, Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies, and especially Dominic Smith have all regressed, while 'Atlanta shortstop' has remained a season-long disaster."

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts enters the 2026 NFL season facing an unusual concern. Eagles reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks has highlighted a really concerning turnover rate in his training camp performance.
Shorr-Parks posted on X that Hurts has thrown 13 interceptions across 16 practices this summer. That compares with 15 interceptions during the previous four training camps combined.

"Hurts and offense are turning it over way too much," Shorr-Parks wrote. He added that Philadelphia may need to return to its more conservative passing approach if the issue continues into the regular season.

The New England Patriots made the inevitable decision to trade wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans on Monday, per NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the full details of the trade include the Texans sending a 2028 seventh-round draft pick and second-year safety Jaylen Reed to New England in exchange for Boutte. Reed has potential as a future defensive contributor, but he was mostly used on special teams by the Texans.
It had to be a tough decision for the Patriots considering Boutte was one of the rare wide receivers they've actually hit on in the draft. Last season, the former LSU wideout served as quarterback Drake Maye's top deep threat option, finishing the year with 33 catches for 551 yards and six touchdowns.
There was hope those numbers would continue to climb in his fourth NFL season, but given the other additions, including veteran Romeo Doubs and three-time All-Pro wide receiver A.J. Brown, Boutte's snap count would have likely taken a significant hit.
This trade doesn't make the Patriots a better football team, but it does ensure that they get something in return for a player who was likely walking out the door for nothing in free agency next year. It also gives Boutte a better opportunity to raise his snap count and improve his regular season statistics to maximize the value of his next NFL contract.

But with Michael Penix Jr. or Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback, it won't matter in the end. It's really sad to watch Penix Jr. and Tagovailoa's bodies betray them. It also really stinks to consider Atlanta wasting another talented roster in the quarterback wilderness and missing the playoffs for a ninth straight season.

Portugal have found a rather unexpected way to avenge their FIFA World Cup heartbreak against Spain.

Just over a month after Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. were knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by their neighbours, Portugal got one back — not on a football pitch, but on a cricket field.

Portugal defeated Spain by 57 runs in the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Sub Regional Qualifier C in 2026, ending Spain's campaign and keeping their own dream of reaching the 2028 T20 World Cup alive.

The football defeat had come in July, when Spain edged Portugal 1-0 in the Round of 16 at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, USA. Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal in stoppage time of regulation time, sending Ronaldo's Portugal out of the tournament.

This time, though, it was Portugal celebrating at Spain's expense.
Led by former Australia international Moises Henriques, Portugal produced a composed performance to claim the crucial qualifying victory.

Spain captain Christian Munoz-Mills won the toss and chose to field, but Portugal built a competitive total of 160/6.

Dhavalkumar Norotam made 23 and Christopher De Freitas scored 39 as Portugal made a steady start without quite managing to dominate the Spanish attack. Henriques, meanwhile, contributed 18 but could not convert his start into a substantial innings.

Portugal accelerated late in the innings through Craig Cachopa, who struck 25 off 21 ****** , while Carlos Nunes added 15 off nine. Jeremy Martins provided an important final push with an unbeaten 18 off just eight deliveries.

Yasir Ali and Lorne Burns were Spain's best bowlers, taking two wickets apiece.

Spain's chase initially threatened to become interesting, but Portugal's bowlers quickly put the brakes on the pursuit.

Sebastian de Oliveira made the breakthrough early, while Martins also chipped in as Portugal reduced Spain to 32/3. Yasir Ali and Daniel Doyle Calle then began rebuilding the innings and gave Spain hope of mounting a serious chase.
Siraj Ullah Khadem changed the complexion of the contest in the 11th over when he bowled Yasir for 29.

Spain's promising chase soon turned into a procession, and Martins completed the job by bowling Lorne Burns as Portugal wrapped up a 57-run victory.

The triumph sends Portugal into the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in 2027, putting them one step closer to a place in the global qualifying tournament for the 2028 T20 World Cup.

Portugal join Jersey and Denmark in the Europe Qualifier, while Scotland enter directly because of the exceptional circumstances surrounding their participation in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Italy and the Netherlands, meanwhile, advance directly to the Global Qualifier.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – It was an entertaining preseason matchup between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles, even without the starters playing.
There was some thought that star quarterback Drake Maye might play for one drive, but instead, it was Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton who each got a half. But what certainly caught everyone's eye was when a surprising player slotted in at punter.
Here are the takeaways from the Patriots' 24-21 preseason win over the Eagles:
On the opening kickoff, there was a very scary moment as Eagles running back Ja'Quinden Jackson remained down on the field following the play. His teammates immediately signaled for the training staff to come over, and they stayed with him before others came out, as well as the ambulance. Players from both teams were down on one knee, showing their support. He was put on a stretcher, and the entire Eagles sideline came over and gathered around him as he was loaded into the ambulance.
Philadelphia released an update shortly after, saying that he has "strength and movement in all extremities and is being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation."

After joint practices on Wednesday and Thursday, the New England Patriots are set to host the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium at 7 p.m. ET for the team's second preseason game.

McAnally-Hilgeman Racing's Tyler Ankrum didn't have the race he desired, but he still got his desired outcome.
Layne Riggs won the race, scoring his series leading sixth victory on the season. Riggs didn't win either of the stages, as those stage wins went to Spire Motorsports' Connor Zilisch. In addition to winning stages one and two, the Cup Series regular led 55 laps as well. While these two driver had impressive runs, most eyes were following the intense points battle between Tyler Ankrum, Stewart Friesen, and Jake Garcia.
Coming into the race, Ankrum held a 20 point lead over both Friesen and Garcia, however that lead dissipated from the drop of the green flag. Very quickly in stage one, Ankrum battled brake issues and ran outside the top 20 for most of the day. While he struggled, both Garcia and Friesen chipped away at his points gap, as they gained track position throughout the race through strategy.
As the laps were winding down, the battle between the three drivers was within a singular point. It seemed like each lap, everyone was unsure on who was going to win. Then with 6 laps to go, everything changed. Tricon Racing's Gavan Boschele lost control of his truck entering turn one. From there, chaos ensued.
Before the first overtime attempt, things were looking bleak. Ankrum was running in 27th, but crew chief Mark Hillman elected to stay out on the race track, while many cars came down pit road. This move put Ankrum inside the top 20, and gained him ten points over the other two competitors.

For the second time during the NFL preseason and Detroit training camp, Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. appears to have avoided a serious injury.
Rakestraw exited Lions training camp practice on Thursday to be evaluated for a potential lower leg injury. On Friday morning, Lions radio play-by-play voice and Fox 2 Detroit sports director Dan Miller reported that Rakestraw has an ankle injury and it's not expected to be serious.
Rakestraw's status for Saturday's preseason date against the Washington Commanders is in doubt, but the news that the third-year corner has avoided a major injury comes as a relief to the Lions.
Rakestraw also left the Lions' preseason opener at the Cincinnati Bengals last week after tackling running back Tahj Brooks. Rakestraw and Lions head coach Dan Campbell both said his injury against the Bengals wasn't anything major.
"Nah, not at all. I'll be back," Rakestraw told reporters after the Bengals preseason game when asked if it was something long-term.

Teams have joint practices, preseason games, and everything in between for a reason.
They help teams understand what they need to keep working on. For the Patriots, including quarterback Drake Maye, that's a major focus right now. Maye understands he needs to keep improving on offense, especially in the red zone.
"Just late, late to the football, late in the red zone," Maye said, per the Boston Herald. "You can't be late in the red zone down there. It's tight, and it's a concept that we probably need to get some more work on and just find some timing. Just can't be late down there."

Throughout the first two full team periods, the pattern when the starters were on the field was consistent. When Drake Maye threw the ball, the Patriots moved the ball. When the Patriots ran the ball, the Eagles defensive line dominated. I counted one semi-successful run, which led to some light pushing and shoving when Nolan Smith took exception to Rhamondre Stevenson lowering his shoulder on Cooper DeJean. On one rep, Jalyx Hunt simply grabbed the ball from Stevenson's grasp in the backfield for an instant turnover. Talking with Patriots reporters after practice, their No. 1 takeaway was that Hunt looks like a superstar.

Red zone woes: Improving in the red zone is an area of focus for the Patriots this season after struggling as a unit last year. On Thursday, the inconsistencies continued even though Drake Maye and Co. started strong with touchdowns to Mack Hollins and A.J. Brown on a contested catch over Quinyon Mitchell. From there, pressure became more of an issue and Maye was late targeting Brown along the goal line which led to a long pick-six by Riq Woolen. Maye's end-of-game drive then ended on one play as a slant to Brown was broken up with the ball popping up into the air and Jalyx Hunt recording an interception. The unit was given a second chance which ended better with a touchdown to Romeo Doubs. "Felt like we could have done more in the red zone," Maye said after practice. "That's something for us to learn. It's one of our focuses this year… so we got some work to do." […] Will Campbell and Caleb Lomu each split their 1-on-1 reps. Campbell continued to have some issues in pass pro against Jalyx Hunt, who is a breakout candidate for the Eagles this year, but did have a nice stunt pickup with Alijah Vera-Tucker to lead to Romeo Doubs' touchdown.

In addition to the pick, there was a rep where he simply stole the ball away from Rhamondre Stevenson's hands for an instant forced fumble and recovery. I love the aesthetic of that kind of play where the ball doesn't even touch the ground. Hunt is a beast. He's had an awesome summer.
