New York governor Kathy Hochul will today (Monday) launch an 88-person exploratory committee to report on the feasibility and challenges of a formal bid to host the Winter Olympic Games, according to people with knowledge of the announcement who spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to do so publicly.
The potential bid would see New York City and Lake Placid partner to host the 2042 edition.
Earlier this year, Gov. Hochul told The Athletic that "significant" meetings had taken place as she seeks to return the Winter Olympics to New York state for the first time since 1980, which is best remembered for the Miracle on Ice when the U.S. hockey team defeated the Soviet Union. Gov. Hochul, while announcing the committee today, will also announce a $2.5 million funding commitment to create a monument in Lake Placid in honor of the Miracle on Ice team.
The Lake Placid-New York City Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games Exploratory Committee will have an eight-strong leadership group, which will include Ashley Walden, the president and CEO of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, as well as representation from the offices of Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (both Democrats), sources said. It will also include Julie Su, appointed deputy mayor for economic justice of New York City by mayor Zohran Mamdani, as well as Hope Knight, the president of Empire State Development, the New York state economic development arm.
There is a 16-member sub-committee on finance, which includes John Collins, co-owner and operating partner of the New York Islanders, and Josh Cohen, the son of New York Mets owner Steve Cohen, who works as the team's vice president of business development. Randy Levine, the owner of the New York Yankees, is one of 12 members of a legal sub-committee, which also includes Robert Landau, the executive vice-president of NBC Universal, the long-time broadcaster of the Olympics in the United States.

Trillion-dollar conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKA)(NYSE:BRKB) entered 2026 in uncharted territory for the first time in more than half a century. On Dec. 31, Warren Buffett, the company's longtime CEO, who oversaw a greater-than-6,000,000% outperformance of the benchmark S&P 500 since the mid-1960s, retired as CEO. His successor, Greg Abel, is now in charge of Berkshire's $350 billion investment portfolio.
While the Oracle of Omaha had a knack for spotting amazing deals hiding in plain sight, he wasn't infallible. Decisions made in the years leading up to his retirement with No. 1 holding Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) have cost Berkshire Hathaway up to $112 billion in would-be gains.

Warren Buffett began building a position in the "Apple" of his eye in the first quarter of 2016. While artificial intelligence is all the rage today, Buffett was more interested in consumers' draw to the brand when he initially invested. Apple has an exceptionally loyal customer base that's shown a willingness to pay premium prices for its physical products (iPhone, iPad, and Mac).

Railroads made Cornelius Vanderbilt America's richest person by the 1860s, dying in 1877 with an estate estimated at $95 million to $105 million, larger than U.S. Treasury holdings. By share of GDP, Vanderbilt places third among the richest Americans, behind Rockefeller and Carnegie. Within years, his industry's financing gave way, a warning for today's AI expansion.
The rail network doubled from 35,000 to 70,000 miles between 1865 and 1872, with bonds financing more than three-quarters of it. On September 18, 1873, Jay Cooke's bank failed. The New York Stock Exchange closed for ten days, its first closure ever.

At the end of 2025, Warren Buffett stepped down from his longtime position as the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB). Over the 61 years he ran the company, the stock produced incredible returns for shareholders, rising by more than six million percent. Over the same span, the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) gained 46,000%.
Clearly, Buffett earned the nickname the "Oracle of Omaha." But can you still benefit from his investment wisdom now that the 96-year-old investor is no longer with Berkshire Hathaway? You sure can!

Buffett's investment approach is deceptively simple to explain. He liked to buy well-run businesses while they were attractively priced. Then he liked to hold for the long term, so he could benefit from the growth of the businesses in which he invested. That's something that any investor can do. And while all investment approaches go in and out of favor over time, this one has clearly proven itself to be a long-term winner.
That said, Buffett was also highly selective. He once described investing as a baseball game where they don't call ******* and strikes. His point was that you don't have to swing at every pitch, even though you should have a diversified portfolio. The Motley Fool recommends 50 stocks as a good portfolio size, but there are thousands of investments you could choose from. Once again, Buffett's advice is very good: Be selective.

Energy pays some of the highest yields in the market, and it carries a risk most income sectors avoid: commodity prices. When crude falls, an integrated major can lean on its refining business. A pure producer sees its cash flow rise and fall with oil and gas prices. A midstream operator collects fees on the volumes moving through its pipelines, plants and export docks, so its cash flow holds up better in a downturn.

It's been a year of historic change on Wall Street. We've witnessed the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, retire as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKA)(NYSE:BRKB), stood in awe at the largest-ever initial public offering, and watched the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI), S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC), and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) launch to several record highs.
But the biggest change of all has been the swearing in of a new Fed chair. On May 22, President Donald Trump's handpicked successor to Jerome Powell, Kevin Warsh, became only the 17th head of the central bank.

Markel mirrors Berkshire's three-engine model of insurance, equities, and operating businesses, with $18.84 billion in float and $429.5 million in 2025 buybacks, but its $22 billion market cap makes it a fundamentally different species.
Markel's combined ratio improved to 94.6% in 2025, yet shares are down 17% year to date while trailing Berkshire's 10-year return by 155 percentage points.
Three signals determine the Markel thesis: whether the combined ratio holds in the low 90s, buybacks sustain pace, and Markel Ventures remains inside the group.

Warren Buffett has stepped down as board chair of Berkshire Hathaway, with Greg Abel now running the company. The Magnificent 7 stocks are having a tough ride in 2026, and only Apple (AAPL) is outperforming the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX). Digging deeper, Nvidia (NVDA) is the only other constituent that is up in double digits. Despite its recent rally, Tesla (TSLA) is still down over 18% year-to-date (YTD) and is the worst-performing Mag 7 stock.
The price action is not difficult to explain. Investors are now getting increasingly wary of tech companies' ever-rising capex to build artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Apple was an outlier in the AI buildout race and is now sitting pretty as investors realize that waiting it out wasn't exactly a bad move on the iPhone maker's part.

Robinhood chief executive Vlad Tenev told investors that the company's prediction markets business is at the beginning of something much larger, and he put a number on it that most executives avoid saying out loud. "I think we're just at the beginning of a Prediction Markets supercycle that could drive trillions in annual volume over time," he said on Robinhood Markets' (HOOD) fourth quarter and full year 2025 earnings call on February 10.
He reported adoption below the forecast. In the same remarks, Tenev said prediction market volumes had "more than doubled yet again" in the fourth quarter, "with over 12 billion contracts traded in 2025, which is the first full year of Prediction Markets." Customers had traded more than four billion further contracts in the opening weeks of 2026. He called it "the fastest-growing business in our history, $300 million-plus run rate in its first year."

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the cybersecurity landscape, and CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD) believes the threat is no longer theoretical. CEO George Kurtz recently described the situation as the "genie's out of the bottle," underscoring that AI capabilities are now widely available and can be exploited by attackers. CrowdStrike's 2026 Global Threat Report found that AI-enabled adversary activity surged 89% year-over-year, while the company has also observed attacks moving at machine speed.
Kurtz said AI agents should be secured like privileged users, with strict permissions, temporary credentials, and emergency shutdown capabilities, while humans retain control over critical decisions. He also urged AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI to work more closely with cybersecurity firms and independent evaluators to address emerging AI-related threats.

Industrial automation company Rockwell (ROK) has joined Project Glasswing, Anthropic's initiative focused on using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to improve cybersecurity across critical infrastructure. For Rockwell, this is especially relevant because its systems sit inside factories, warehouses, semiconductor plants, and other industrial operations.
The timing also matters. ROK stock has already had a strong run this year, while its latest results showed solid demand and expanding margins. But shares have pulled back from their June 52-week high of $497.36. That leaves investors asking whether Project Glasswing can become another growth driver or simply adds another layer to Rockwell's long-term technology story.

DTE Energy holds 2.4 GW of signed data center deals with between 5 and 6 GW more in the pipeline, supporting a $148 price target and 13% upside.
CEO Joi Harris confirmed Oracle's 1.4 GW project is under construction and Google's 1 GW deal could drive $5 billion in incremental capex through 2032.
CMS Energy's $24 billion capital plan and WEC's premium valuation both support DTE's forward P/E of 16 as reasonable and undervalued.

Intuit (INTU) remains a financial technology powerhouse, with roughly 100 million customers across its platforms. Its biggest advantage is the breadth of financial workflows it brings together, spanning everything from tax preparation to business software. But that strength has not protected the stock from a changing market narrative.
Wall Street is increasingly concerned that the rapid adoption and advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) could chip away at Intuit's core tax and business software offerings. These concerns intensified after Intuit delivered slightly disappointing FY2027 sales guidance with its Q4 FY2026 results.

Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) is increasing the expected cost of its fiscal 2026 restructuring plan by about $700 million to roughly $2.8 billion as it simultaneously ramps up spending to capture demand for AI cloud services. The additional costs include severance, contract terminations and other exit expenses, with some restructuring directly linked to adopting AI across parts of the organization.
Oracle had already recorded $1.8 billion of restructuring expenses in fiscal 2026, compared with $299 million in fiscal 2025, showing how materially the company is accelerating its operational transformation. The restructuring comes alongside an unusually large AI investment cycle. Oracle booked more than $30 billion of new AI cloud contracts in its latest quarter, lifting its remaining performance obligations/revenue backlog to $664 billion, while roughly half of that backlog is expected to convert into revenue over the next 36 months.
The strongest bull argument is that the additional restructuring expense is part of a broader shift toward a higher-growth cloud and AI business rather than simply a deterioration in cost control. Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL)'s restructuring program is explicitly aimed at improving efficiency while reallocating resources toward cloud-based offerings and second-generation cloud infrastructure. If the $2.8 billion restructuring program reduces lower-growth costs and enables Oracle to redirect personnel and capital toward AI infrastructure, the near-term earnings pressure could support stronger operating leverage later as cloud revenue scales.
More importantly, the restructuring is occurring against evidence that AI demand is already translating into contracted revenue. Oracle added more than $30 billion of AI cloud contracts in one quarter, pushing its backlog to $664 billion, above the $639.89 billion ******* yst estimate. Management said most of the newly contracted revenue would not require substantial incremental capital because customers are using prepayments or supplying their own hardware. That is particularly important because Oracle's biggest weakness has been the mismatch between rapid infrastructure investment and current cash generation. If customer-funded capacity continues to reduce Oracle's upfront capital burden, the company could convert its huge backlog into revenue without proportionally increasing its cash burn.
The early financial evidence also supports the possibility that the AI strategy is beginning to improve Oracle's growth profile. Revenue in the recent quarter rose 30% year over year to $19.3 billion, adjusted EPS reached $1.92 versus the $1.74 ******* yst consensus, and Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) raised its fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS forecast from $8.05 to $8.10. Meanwhile, first-quarter free cash flow of negative $5.4 billion was substantially better than both the expected negative $9.56 billion and the previous-quarter negative $11.48 billion. On the surface, Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) is the type of company you would expect to benefit tremendously from the generative artificial intelligence (AI) boom. It provides the computing power and data storage vital for running and training these complex algorithms. But while its stock captured some gains early in the AI era, it has more recently lagged behind other AI infrastructure stocks.
Oracle's shares are up by a relatively modest 69% over the last five years, well behind chipmakers such as Nvidia and Micron Technology, which have soared by 885% and 1,212%, respectively, in the same time frame. Let's discuss the pros and cons of Oracle, and attempt to predict what a $1,000 position could be worth by the end of the decade.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Like the leadership teams at many tech giants, Oracle's management recognized the long-term potential of the generative AI boom fairly early in the trend. They quickly moved to position the company on the pick-and-shovel side of the opportunity, providing cloud services and data center capacity to companies that were working to create and market consumer-facing large language models (LLMs). That push into the cloud infrastructure segment was underpinned by a substantial reorganization of Oracle's corporate structure.
This year, the company has already laid off 21,000 employees. That number is expected to rise with a $700 million addition to its restructuring plan (which is now worth $2.8 billion); much of the new spending is earmarked for severance payments and other exit expenses.

Oracle Chief Financial Officer Hilary Maxson told employees on Tuesday that the company's latest round of layoffs should not be understood as a directive to do more with fewer resources, according to Business Insider, which reviewed a recording of the remarks.
"I don't mean doing more with less, which is a phrase that I really, really don't like," Maxson said. "It means simplifying processes that don't help customers and making clear choices on where we're going to use our resources where they have the greatest impact."
The comments came during Maxson's first companywide meeting since joining Oracle, held one day after the company began a new round of job cuts. According to Business Insider, the layoffs went unmentioned by Maxson and the other executives who spoke during the roughly hour-long town hall. Instead, executives focused on growth, customer demand, and artificial intelligence.
Co-CEO Mike Sicilia used the meeting to offer employees a mantra for the quarter. "I'd ask you to keep asking a very simple question: How does the work that I'm doing help deliver a better outcome for a customer?" Sicilia said. "There's a lot of change around this, a lot going on in the world, and in moments like this, how we work together and how we show up for our customers and for each other matters most."
The latest cuts follow a significant reduction in Oracle's workforce over the past year. According to a regulatory filing, Oracle shed approximately 21,000 positions — representing about 13% of its workforce — across the fiscal year that closed on May 31, 2026.

It was a nail biter, but the San Diego Padres came away from it with a seven-game win streak and back-to-back sweeps for the third time this season. It was a great game to cap off the sweep. Ethan Salas finally notched his first big-league hit with a triple in Oracle Park, Fernando Tatis Jr. went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Manny Machado launched his 27th home run of the season.
The Friars will now turn to the Colorado Rockies to round out their penultimate road trip of the 2026 season. It's a four-game set in the hitter-friendly environs of Coors Field. With the way the Padres have been swinging their bats lately (37 runs in their last six games; 6.2 runs per game), they should have no problem keeping the good vibes rolling.
Sugano has been surprisingly good in the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field. That said, he's still pitched to a 5.30 ERA. But that number goes down to 4.96 at home compared to 5.64 away. It's an interesting split to have when Colorado is known for being a hitter's dream.
The righty has been particularly awful recently. In his last seven starts, Sugano has pitched to a 7.71 ERA across 35 innings pitched. In his last three starts, he's surrendered a whopping 14 runs (16.0 IP). If San Diego's recently potent lineup can take advantage of that, they would be well on their way to their eighth straight win.
Since joining the Padres, it's no secret that Mize has struggled. He's posted a dismal 6.34 ERA in his first seven games. Much of that is believed to be due to a groin injury that Mize has been pitching through. It was reported earlier this week that that injury was the reason many scouts decided against Mize, lowering his trade stock.

Shares of the artificial intelligence cloud provider Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) slid this morning after a report over the weekend showed that co-founder Larry Ellison was abandoning plans to sell up to $7.5 billion worth of Oracle stock.
That sort of news would typically cause a share price rally, but Ellison's move came as investors sold some AI stocks today, amid calls from Anthropic and OpenAI for more artificial intelligence regulation.

Oracle disclosed in a regulatory filing that it is expanding its planned job cuts by approximately $700 million, bringing the total estimated cost of its 2026 Restructuring Plan to roughly $2.8 billion as the company presses forward with a costly AI data center buildout.
The additional costs reflect "additional actions that we expect to take," the company said. The plan, approved during fiscal 2026, encompasses severance payments, contract termination fees, and related exit costs, with a portion of the reduction linked to how Oracle is deploying AI across parts of its business.
Through August 31, Oracle had recorded roughly $2.1 billion in charges against the plan. The expansion was disclosed after the close of the company's fiscal first quarter, which ended August 31.
The restructuring push is unfolding as Oracle absorbs a steep rise in capital spending. Cash used for capital expenditures climbed to $28.5 billion in the quarter ended August 31, up from $8.5 billion in the same period a year earlier, the company said, driven by expansion of its data centers. Oracle reported negative free cash flow of $5.4 billion for the quarter.
To fund its buildout, the company said it raised $19.9 billion by selling approximately 141 million shares of common stock through an at-the-market offering program during the quarter. Oracle has said it plans to raise approximately $40 billion through a combination of debt and equity in its current fiscal year.
