October Nymex natural gas (NGV26) on Thursday closed up +0.012 (+0.43%).
Nat-gas prices rebounded from a 2-week low on Thursday and settled higher. Short covering emerged in nat-gas on Thursday, supported by carryover from a rally in European nat-gas prices to a 3.75-year high. European nat-gas is soaring as sharply reduced supplies from the Middle East due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz from the US-Iran war may boost European demand for US gas supplies. European nat-gas storage levels are well below normal, a bullish factor ahead of winter, when demand typically surges.

India needs to expand biofuel production and consumption to boost its energy security as crude oil prices soar amid the Middle East crisis, according to Tarun Kapoor, an adviser in India's Prime Minister's Office.
"The future of biofuels is about maximizing value from every available resource," Kapoor said at the India Sugar and Bio-Energy Conference.
"From ethanol and compressed biogas to new applications in transport, industry and energy, we must expand the market and fully utilize the capacity we have created," the PM office's adviser said.
India, the world's third-largest crude oil importer, which depended on the Middle East for nearly half of its crude oil imports before the war, has been paying a high price for alternative crude supplies since the Iran war began.
India launched in June a new fuel blend with an 85% ethanol component as part of the fuel flex mobility program to reduce dependence on imported oil.

Gold (GC=F) December futures opened at $4,522 per troy ounce on Friday, September 4, 2026, down 0.4% from Thursday's closing price. The price of gold is pretty steady this morning at $4,521.40 per troy ounce as of 6:45 a.m. ET.
Gold opened at its highest price all week this morning ahead of the August jobs report. Economists expect the U.S. to have added 55,000 jobs last month, a rebound from a surprising decline in job growth in July. Economic data released earlier this week suggests the labor market remains stuck in a pattern of minimal but stable growth.
Coupling a modest jobs report with comments this week from Fed Governor Chris Waller that he's open to holding rates steady if next week's inflation report shows price gains are easing, and bets that the Fed will be raising rates later this month have backed off, giving gold prices some more room to breathe.
The opening price of gold futures on Friday, September 4, 2026, was down 0.4% from Thursday's closing price. Here's a look at how the opening gold price has changed versus last week, month, and year:

ShipStation, a provider of multicarrier parcel shipping software, is offering e-commerce sellers the ability to also select and coordinate with less-than-truckload operators at pre-negotiated rates in one integrated platform, bringing to life promised benefits from ownership's recent acquisition of freight brokerage Worldwide Express Group.
Few, if any, software-as-a-service companies that connect small-and-midsize merchants with parcel carriers offer a pallet-shipping solution.
"Most of those small companies don't have enough volumes to do full truckload so their first need after parcel shipping tends to be LTL, which creates this natural linkage between LTL freight brokerage and parcel," said Chris Wofford, the founder of Wofford Advisors LLC, a strategic advisory firm for the logistics sector.
In early June, private equity firm Thoma Bravo acquired WWEX Group and merged it with portfolio company Auctane, which provides shipping and fulfillment technology through brands like ShipStation, Stamps.com, Metapack and Packlink. The combined valuation of the companies is $12 billion.
WWEX Group companies include Worldwide Express, GlobalTranz, Unishippers, JEAR Logistics and BLX Logistics.

On August 27, CIBC (NYSE:CM) reported third-quarter results that pushed adjusted earnings per share to $2.73, up 26% from a year earlier and marking the ninth consecutive quarter of double-digit EPS growth. Adjusted net income climbed to $2,648 million on revenue of $8,368 million, up 15% year over year, and return on equity reached 16.8%, up 260 basis points from the same quarter last year. The headline numbers describe a bank firing on multiple cylinders at once, even as management flagged pockets of strain underneath.
Capital Markets net income grew 34% year over year to $722 million, powered by equity trading and financing activity. Canadian Personal and Business Banking delivered $948 million in net income, up 17% from a year ago, while net interest margin climbed to 304 basis points, up 3 basis points sequentially on higher loan and deposit margins. In the US segment, net income rose 23% to $320 million, helped by lower provisions for loan losses and a revenue increase, even as net interest margin slipped 14 basis points sequentially to 3.76%. CIBC's efficiency ratio tightened by 200 basis points from a year earlier, the 12th straight quarter the bank has generated positive operating leverage, a sign revenue is outrunning costs rather than expenses eating into the gains.
Wealth Management showed similar strength, with ******* ets under administration and ******* ets under management both up more than 20% year over year and credit fees rising 25% on strong corporate lending and financing activity. Investor's Edge, the bank's self-directed investing platform, posted 34% growth in new account openings, and the managed mass affluent client base grew 4%, supporting a 12% increase in money-in balances. CIBC also returned capital to shareholders through 7.5 million shares repurchased during the quarter, and CEO Harry Culham pointed to the newly launched CIBC AI 2.0 agentic workspace and the CIBC AdvisorAssist platform, which he said cuts advisers' administrative documentation time by up to 50%.
Not every line moved in CIBC's favor. The Common Equity Tier 1 ratio slipped 19 basis points sequentially to 13.4%, as organic capital generation was offset by share buybacks and a $269 million charge, $232 million after tax, related to CIBC's planned sale of its Caribbean banking unit, CIBC Caribbean Bank Limited. Provisions on impaired loans climbed $64 million sequentially to $612 million, which CIBC linked to a handful of one-off credit issues inside its Canadian Commercial Banking and Capital Markets books rather than any broader deterioration. Total deposits fell 1% year over year, and GIC balances dropped 10% as clients shifted funds into higher-margin managed mutual fund products.

On August 21, 2026, Bloomberg reported that Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT) will accept Apple Pay and Google Pay across all its U.S. stores and Sam's Club locations by the end of 2026, ending a years-long holdout. The rollout begins August 24 at select locations, with fuel stations gaining the capability by mid-2027.
Walmart had previously relied on its own proprietary Walmart Pay system, preferring QR-code technology that gave it more control over transaction data, rather than supporting near-field communication wallets like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s Apple Pay. Customers will be able to tap contactless cards, phones, or smartwatches at checkout and add Walmart, Sam's Club, or OnePay cards to their digital wallets.
For Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), this closes one of the last major gaps in Apple Pay's retail coverage. More than 90% of U.S. retailers already accept Apple Pay, and the service holds roughly 92% market share among U.S. mobile wallets, according to Capital One data. Adding the nation's largest retailer removes one of the most visible remaining holdouts. It reinforces Apple Pay's position as the default mobile wallet at checkout.
Apple Pay's user base gives this rollout real reach from day one: Capital One estimates Apple Pay usership is on pace to grow from 70 million to more than 84 million users over the next four years. Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT)'s enormous foot traffic with an existing and growing user base gives Apple immediate transaction volume without needing to win over new wallet users.
Walmart is fixing something that annoyed shoppers, but they aren't giving up on their own payment tools. Walmart wants customers to have a choice in how they pay, and Tap to Pay adds to, rather than replaces, cash, credit cards, and Walmart Pay. Reducing checkout friction and consumer complaints matters more now that agentic and NFC payments have become standard shopping behavior.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella has enjoyed a tremendous increase in his total compensation over the past decade, with his pay rising from just $18 million in 2015 to $96.5 million at the end of fiscal 2025. That has made him one of the world's highest-paid CEOs.
The massive jump was the result of more than 95% of Nadella's pay being directly tied to performance stock units linked to Microsoft's shares. The better Microsoft stock performs, the higher Nadella's compensation becomes.

With Microsoft's stock surging 942% since 2015, it's no wonder Nadella's pay has accelerated. And as impressive as his pay is, the two reasons for Microsoft's growth over the past decade or so have been equally as remarkable.
When Nadella took over Microsoft in 2014, he famously shifted the company's focus to what he called a "mobile first, cloud first" approach. That meant funneling talent and capital into the company's cloud computing services, particularly Azure.

The freight market has seen a brutal downturn, with an astounding 85% failure rate for new carriers in the past three years. Kirk Mann, EVP & GM of Transportation and Vendor Solutions at Mitsubishi HC Capital America, dives into why this cycle was the longest, the impact of over-financed ****** ets, and what it means for the future of freight demand and equipment financing. Learn how lenders navigate this volatile landscape and what's next for carrier growth.
The average three-year failure rate for motor carriers with fewer than two years of operating experience and their own ICC authority hit 85% during the prolonged freight downturn, according to Kirk Mann, EVP & GM of Transportation and Vendor Solutions at Mitsubishi HC Capital. Mann shared the figure in a FreightWaves interview, offering one of the starkest measures yet of how the roughly three-and-a-half-year downturn devastated the smallest participants in the for-hire trucking market.
The elevated failure rate traces directly to the equipment bubble that inflated during 2021 and 2022. Mann recalled a conversation with his chief risk officer in which they discussed a four-year-old Freightliner Cascadia with fewer than 500,000 miles — an ****** et the risk officer valued at roughly $45,000 but that the company was financing at $100,000 to $110,000. FreightWaves data showed pre-COVID prices on five-year-old equipment running around $34,000, climbing to as high as $120,000 at the peak. Carriers that entered the business buying equipment at those inflated values were immediately underwater when rates collapsed.
"I remember we were way bubble. It was an ****** et bubble of enormous proportions," Mann said.
When defaults mounted, Mitsubishi HC Capital leaned on workout tools rather than immediate repossession. Mann said the company restructured approximately 75% of its loans during its 2020 customer ****** istance program launched at the onset of COVID-19, and that 95% of those borrowers resumed payments within 90 days. Even so, the lender accumulated repossessed inventory it held "for quite a long time" before conditions improved enough to move units through dealer networks, auctions, and internal sales channels.

Just a few years ago, most people may not have even known what a natural gas power turbine was, or what they're used for. Today, investors keeping tabs on the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution are almost certainly familiar with them, and the AI industry's lack of them.
See, gas turbines generate onsite electricity that AI data centers need, but utility companies aren't in a position to deliver. Anywhere from the size of a delivery truck to a train car, these massive machines can put out watts to power a small city, or -- obviously -- an AI data center. They just need a supply of natural gas, which is now proving easier to get than an institutional-scale hookup to a power grid.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
And the AI industry is most definitely embracing the solution. Although the majority of them aren't yet operational, BloombergNEF reports that there are nearly 100 data centers with, or building, on-site natural gas turbine power infrastructure. Although they come with a higher upfront cost, owners/operators like their long-term cost-effectiveness and the self-sufficiency they enable. To this end, PwC expect the AI industry's consumption of natural gas to more than quintuple by 2035, with power turbines accounting for much of this growth.
There's just one not-so-small problem with the idea. That is, with demand greatly exceeding supply, prices of natural gas power turbines are soaring. As energy industry consulting and research firm Wood Mackenzie noted earlier this year, by the end of next year, the per-kilowatt cost of gas-powered turbines could be 195% higher than where it was in 2019.

Stocks shrugged it off, but bond yields moved higher for a second straight day on Friday, the latest sign that the US Treasury's intervention efforts have been a bust.
The 30-year Treasury yield was up more than 2 basis points to nearly 5.28% in the afternoon, inching back toward the 5.3% level that spooked markets earlier this week, while the 10-year yield was more than 3 basis points higher, over 4.73%.
On Wednesday, the Treasury said it would "at least double" the amount of 10-year, 20-year, and 30-year Treasury bonds it buys back. A day later, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled he could expand the purchases further. The operation is set to begin on Sept. 9 and remain effective through Nov. 4.
Read more: How soaring Treasury yields could impact your finances
Bond market watchers have been skeptical that the Treasury's plan to lower yields by boosting long-dated bond buying would work. Multiple factors outside of the Treasury's control, including inflation fears, Federal Reserve communication changes, and a boom in corporate debt issuance, have contributed to higher yields.

LONDON/NEW YORK/TOKYO, August 20 (Reuters) - U.S. debt has topped $40 trillion for the first time, underscoring the pressures on the world's major economies to fund ever-increasing spending demands -- from ageing populations to climate change and defence.
This year, the Iran war has rekindled inflation risks, while damage wrought by Europe's increasingly volatile weather is a further strain ‌on public finances.
No wonder perhaps that U.S. 30-year Treasury yields have risen to their highest since 2007, prompting government action to contain rising borrowing costs. ******* anese borrowing costs are also near their highest in ‌three decades and even Germany -- whose debt load is considerably lighter -- has seen its yields jump to the highest levels since 2011.
A high debt burden that brings higher borrowing costs risks hurting living standards by constraining spending and capping growth. Sovereign debt sets the benchmark for borrowing costs for companies and other loans, including household mortgages.

Voya Investment Management, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for its "Voya MI Dynamic Small Cap Fund." A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. US Equity markets rebounded strongly in the second quarter of 2026, recovering from geopolitical tensions that nearly pushed the S&P 500 Index into correction territory. Technology dominated the landscape, powered by increasing AI adoption, while industrials benefited from strong capital expenditure. Small-cap and growth stocks outperformed; investors grew selective amid concerns about returns, competition, and regulation. The Fund outperformed the Index, benefitting from stock selection in energy, consumer discretionary, and health care sectors. Overall market performance could become more volatile due to rising costs and increased supply from IPOs and secondary issuances. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
