On August 19, 2026, Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) and Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) said that their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine, combined with Merck's Keytruda, met its main goals in a first-ever Phase 3 trial for melanoma. The news sent Moderna shares up as much as 177%, adding $44 billion to its market value, while Merck shares rose more than 12% to an all-time high.
This is the first personalized cancer vaccine to succeed at the late-stage trial level, a milestone Moderna has pursued for years after its Covid-19 vaccine business faded. The stock became the most shorted in the S&P 500.
Does this trial genuinely validate personalized cancer vaccines as a new class of medicine, or is the market's reaction running ahead of data the companies haven't even fully released yet?
Breakthrough Results vs. Unreleased Data: The Moderna Debate
The combination, involving Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA)'s vaccine intismeran autogene and Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK)'s Keytruda, extended the time patients lived without their melanoma returning. It reduced the risk of cancer spreading, building on earlier data showing a 49% reduction in recurrence or death risk and a 59% reduction in distant metastasis risk compared with Keytruda alone. Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel called it validation of "an entirely new class of medicine." TD Cowen ******* ysts called it "a landmark moment" and expect regulatory approval as soon as next year. Even after the surge, Moderna trades at less than a third of its 2021 peak. Rezilient Health's Dr. Danish Nagda argued the platform remains undervalued given the potential to extend the approach to other cancers.

On August 19, 2026, Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) and Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) said their personalized melanoma vaccine, intismeran, combined with Merck's Keytruda, met its goals in a Phase 3 trial of 1,137 patients. It reduced the risk of cancer recurrence and spread compared with Keytruda alone, Reuters reported.
It is the first positive late-stage trial result for an mRNA cancer vaccine. Merck's Jane Healy called the result a "clinically meaningful improvement," and said it was well tolerated, CNBC reported.
Both companies' shares rose on the news. Full data will be presented at an upcoming medical meeting alongside regulatory filing discussions. The companies are already running additional trials of the same vaccine-Keytruda combination in lung, bladder, kidney, pancreatic, and stomach cancers.
For Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA), this is proof that its mRNA platform works beyond vaccines for infectious disease. A positive Phase 3 readout validates years of personalized cancer vaccine development. It gives Moderna a genuine second growth pillar alongside its COVID business, one built on technology the company already knows how to manufacture and scale.
For Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK), the result extends Keytruda's competitive life at a critical moment. Pairing Keytruda with a personalized vaccine gives Merck a differentiated, harder-to-copy combination therapy just as Keytruda itself approaches patent expiration later this decade. Hence, it protects franchise revenue through a next-generation product rather than the drug alone.

Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) jumped 12.6% to a record $152.20 on August 19 after a pivotal melanoma trial validated intismeran autogene, the individualized mRNA cancer therapy developed with Moderna. In the 1,137-patient Phase 3 INTerpath-001 study, intismeran plus Keytruda produced statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in recurrence-free survival and distant-metastasis-free survival compared with Keytruda alone. No new safety concerns emerged. Investors are now asking whether intismeran can turn Keytruda from a drug approaching a patent cliff into the foundation of a personalized-cancer platform.
That distinction matters because Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) generated $31.68 billion from Keytruda and Keytruda Qlex in 2025, nearly half of the company's sales. In the U.S., biosimilar competition could begin after Keytruda's primary compound patent expires in December 2028, although biosimilars have already entered some smaller international markets. A successful combination could support continued use of the franchise without removing the need for other growth engines.
The bullish case for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) is that intismeran adds a personalized immune response to a checkpoint inhibitor already embedded across oncology. The treatment is designed from the unique mutations in each patient's tumor and encodes as many as 34 neoantigens, training the immune system to recognize tumor cells while Keytruda removes a brake on the immune response.
Earlier Phase 2b data showed a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death and a 59% reduction in distant metastasis or death at five years. Phase 3 confirmation makes the approach more credible for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) beyond melanoma. The company is also studying intismeran combinations in non-small cell lung, bladder and renal-cell cancers. Success across several tumor types could create a portfolio of Keytruda combinations rather than a single indication.
That would give Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) another lifecycle-management tool alongside Keytruda Qlex and newer oncology ***** ets. It also strengthens the argument that Keytruda can remain commercially relevant after standalone pembrolizumab faces lower-priced competition.

Aug 25 (Reuters) - Bristol Myers Squibb has ended its partnership with cell therapy startup Cellares to expand the manufacturing of its personalized blood cancer therapy, a company spokesperson told Reuters on Tuesday.
Bristol Myers determined that Cellares' cell therapy manufacturing platform, Cell Shuttle, could not meet the requirements to make its CAR-T therapy, Breyanzi, at commercial scale, the spokesperson said. Cellares did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The development underscores the challenges of manufacturing CAR-T therapies, a personalized form of cancer treatment that has transformed care for some blood cancer patients but remains difficult and expensive to produce.
Breyanzi, first approved by the U.S. FDA in 2021, is used to treat lymphoma and other blood cancers. It generated $1.36 billion in sales in 2025.
Endpoints News first reported the development earlier in the day.

The newest Harvard Business School professor never sleeps, can hear the same pitch 50 times and technically isn't an instructor at all.
The school is now putting AI versions of its faculty to work in a $699 online startup bootcamp, where aspiring founders can rehearse investor pitches, sales calls, and board meetings—all with AI clones of Harvard instructors. They can even test their pitches with an AI avatar repeatedly before a real meeting.
The eight-week program is part of HBS Foundry, which Harvard describes as an "AI-native digital workspace" for entrepreneurs. The startup bootcamp is equipped with "personalized AI mentorship modeled on Harvard Business School faculty" alongside live sessions with experts, culminating with an opportunity to pitch to investors for $100,000. So far, 760 founders have participated in the bootcamp, according to a Harvard spokesperson.
"The idea for the AI experiences came from founders themselves, who wanted opportunities to practice and be challenged before getting in front of mentors and investors, so those conversations could be even more meaningful," Kat Rings, Foundry's director, told Fortune.
The "clones" include seven HBS professors and senior lecturers with backgrounds spanning venture capital, business-model design, board dynamics and startup strategy. Their participation was voluntary, with the program having dedicated interviews and recording sessions, testing and ongoing faculty feedback as part of the process.

Moderna, the American pharma company that became popular for its COVID vaccine, has spent three days trading like a meme stock. Shares exploded 177% on Wednesday after its personalized mRNA cancer vaccine with Merck succeeded in a Phase 3 melanoma trial, adding roughly $30 billion in market value in a single session.
Heavy short covering helped turn a major clinical breakthrough into an extraordinary market move. Then came the whiplash. Moderna fell 23.6% on Thursday, before buyers rushed back on Friday.
Even after the violent pullback and another volatile session, Moderna was still up more than 140% for the week. BeInCrypto ******* ysts now looked at three other US stocks that could potentially have a similar setup.
Moderna's day began with a collapse and a recovery, and Intel has both, sinking to $21.81 before quadrupling to $92.80 in a year, even as chip leaders wobbled.
Its Q2 revenue grew 25.4%, the best in 15 years, and CEO Lip-Bu Tan just put $10 million into the stock at $95 per share.

Aug 19 (Reuters) - Moderna shares more than doubled on Wednesday, adding about $30 billion to its market value, after promising late-stage data on its personalized mRNA cancer therapy developed with Merck sent investors piling into the stock.
The therapy is central to Moderna's efforts to prove that its mRNA technology can succeed beyond its COVID-19 vaccine franchise and infectious disease shots, as it seeks to build a more durable revenue base. The company recently added a flu vaccine to its portfolio and is advancing experimental vaccines for conditions including norovirus and Lyme disease.
Analysts had noted the cancer vaccine data could be an important catalyst for the company and potentially strengthen investor sentiment.
"A successful trial gives investors stronger evidence that mRNA technology can have a meaningful future beyond infectious diseases," said Lale Akoner, global market strategist for eToro.

CHICAGO, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Merck and Moderna's success with a personalized cancer vaccine designed to keep melanoma at bay opens a new avenue of treatment that doctors hope will work against many types of tumors.
Unlike chemotherapy, which kills both healthy and cancerous cells, or immunotherapy, which revs up the immune system, personalized cancer vaccines train the immune system to specifically target mutations found only on a person's tumor.
Merck and Moderna said on Wednesday their vaccine helped prevent the return and spread of disease in a large trial involving more than 1,000 melanoma patients. They had localized tumors that were removed surgically, but had a high risk of recurrence. Moderna expects that thousands of melanoma patients could benefit within the first few years of approval.
"It is a big deal for the field in general," said Dr. Ryan Sullivan, director of the Center for Melanoma at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute. "With this positive study, there is hope (and likely investment to follow) that these approaches may change the way we treat cancer more broadly."
The trial result is "a monumental leap forward," validating mRNA technology as a cancer treatment, said Dr. Julie Gralow, chief medical officer of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

It's the day after one of the surprise healthcare stories of 2026.
Moderna (MRNA) shares fell 20% in early trading on Thursday after a stunning 177% gain yesterday on news that the biotech and partner Merck (MRK) notched a big breakthrough in the fight against cancer.
The pair announced that their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine — called intismeran — successfully hit its primary goal in a Phase 3 late-stage trial, demonstrating a meaningful reduction in melanoma recurrence in patients who had already had their tumors surgically removed.
The trial compared using intismeran alongside Merck's well-known immunotherapy drug Keytruda against using Keytruda alone. Patients who received the combination lived meaningfully longer without their cancer returning or spreading.
"It's a home run, maybe even a grand slam," Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel said on Yahoo Finance (video above). "The results are pretty amazing."

Well, the same goes for life insurance. The last thing you want to do is click on the first policy you see and sign the contract, not for something as important as safeguarding your loved ones' financial future. That's why you'll want to shop around and compare life insurance quotes before you make a final decision. We'll walk you through how to do just that.
A life insurance quote is basically an estimate of the amount you'll pay on a monthly or annual basis for a specific life insurance policy. These quotes aren't set in stone, but they will give you a personalized preview of your policy's costs based on several factors, including the amount of coverage you want, your age, and your overall health and lifestyle.
The price of life insurance premiums for the same amount of coverage can sometimes vary significantly from company to company, so it makes sense to get quotes from several insurers before buying a policy.

Amazon's (AMZN) retail boss has a simple way of explaining where online shopping is headed. Doug Herrington, CEO of Amazon's Worldwide Stores, keeps a Sears catalog from around 1910 in his office. It held roughly 20,000 items, and to buy something, you wrote down a number and mailed in an order form. The point he makes with it is that every way of shopping eventually hits a ceiling. The catalog gave way to the search bar, and now, he argues, the search bar is giving way to conversation.
That shift is Amazon's push into conversational AI, offered to shoppers as Alexa for Shopping. A Virginia man's anti-police license plate is at the center of what could be a landmark First Amendment case, following a federal appeals court ruling in his favor last month.
Virginia motorist Curtis M. Whateley says he has a free speech right to keep his customized license plate, which reads "FTP&ATF," an abbreviation that foul-mouthed puzzle-solvers will decipher as "Fuck the police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms." The State of Virginia argues that it has the right to revoke Whateley's plate because license plates are government-owned, not a public soapbox. The state says it's going to take its case to the Supreme Court.
The case highlights a niche, often amusing, but still consequential issue in First Amendment law: whether a vanity license plate is private or government speech.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that Texas could deny a group's application for a specialty license plate design showing the Confederate flag. Most U.S. district courts and state courts interpreting the decision have held that, while government-run vanity plate programs are a nonpublic forum, the specific character combination of the plate is private speech, which restricts the government from censorship based on viewpoint.
But until the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit issued an opinion on Whateley's case on July 31, no federal appeals court had ruled on the matter, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia (ACLU-VA), which is representing Whateley. The three-judge panel unanimously found Virginia's personalized license plate messages are private speech subject to First Amendment protection.

SUNRISE, Fla. — From little league football to the national championship, Linda Fletcher has never missed one of her son's games.
She is always in the stands when her son, Mark Fletcher Jr., takes the field for the Hurricanes. But she is afraid of flying, so Fletcher has spent the past three years driving to each UM game, whether that means a short trip from her Broward County home to Hard Rock Stadium or a cross-country trip to California's Bay Area in a rental car.
"That was a really big deal, coming from Fort Lauderdale," Fletcher said. "I had never been to California before. And then now it's like, I've been to Texas so many times, I could drive there with my eyes closed. But, yeah, all those trips, we have made it very fun."
This year, Fletcher and her family will be traveling in style. She teamed with Miami legend Michael Irvin's production company, Playmaker Production Group, which gifted her a personalized RV in connection with Fun Town RV. She will get to drive the new RV to each of the Hurricanes' games this year as part of their new web series, "Fetching Fletchers."
Fletcher said she flagged down Irvin when he was on the sideline at a Miami game last year. They talked about her travels, and she said it would only be better if she had an RV. Luckily for her, Irvin knew the owner of the RV company.

After leading the Bulldogs to their first state championship appearance, St. Ursula quarterback Penelope Bolinger has been named the 2026 Bengals Girls Flag Football Player of the Year.

Bolinger, a 2026 St. Ursula graduate, was one of the top quarterbacks in the state last season. She finished the year ranked No. 1 in Ohio by MaxPreps with 312 completions for 3,394 passing yards and 61 touchdowns. St. Ursula's team captain was also named to the Enquirer's all-city first team. After the award presentation, Bolinger took the field one final time as St. Ursula competed against Mount Notre Dame and Badin during halftime. Hims & Hers Health, Inc. (NYSE:HIMS) shares fell over 6% in extended trading on August 10 after the telehealth company delivered another quarter of rapid growth alongside sharply weaker profitability. Revenue rose 38% year over year to $753.2 million, subscribers increased 19% to 2.89 million, and Monthly Revenue per Average Subscriber climbed 21% to $92. The company also raised its full-year revenue outlook to $3.1 billion to $3.3 billion from $2.8 billion to $3.0 billion.
The earnings line told a different story. Hims reported an $86.3 million net loss, equal to 37 cents per share, compared with a $42.5 million profit a year earlier. ****** ysts surveyed by LSEG had expected a loss of just 1 cent per share. Gross margin fell to 64% from 76%.
The market is no longer asking whether Hims & Hers Health, Inc. (NYSE:HIMS) can attract weight-loss customers. The branded GLP-1 pivot has already answered that question. The issue is whether those customers, international expansion, and personalized care can eventually replace the unusually attractive economics of compounded treatments.
The strongest part of the quarter was that demand survived a major change in the product model.
In March, Hims expanded its branded weight-loss ****** ortment through an agreement with Novo Nordisk and stopped broadly advertising compounded GLP-1 drugs. That could have created a deep revenue gap. Instead, management said the branded shift was a key driver of renewed domestic growth. U.S. revenue increased 16% year over year to $621.8 million.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares are in the red today amid reports that rising memory costs could result in higher prices for the iPhone 18, while a Jefferies report indicated disappointing prospects for an all-glass iPhone. However, Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater ***** et Management, said in a recent program on CNBC that he still feels good about Apple and remains bullish on the stock.
Munster believes a potential increase in iPhone prices could actually help boost Apple's revenue growth, with limited impact on demand. At the core of his argument is his expectation of a strong upgrade cycle for Apple's iPhone business, which he believes could drive higher sales over the next several quarters. He also sees a broader consumer hardware upgrade cycle driven by personalized AI beginning around 2027, which he believes could create another major growth opportunity for Apple.
"There's going to be a massive upgrade cycle around consumer hardware," Munster said. "That's probably going to start 27 mid to late 27 and probably go for a few years. And that's based on personalized AI. That's going to do inference on device that's going to benefit Apple, that's going to benefit other hardware makers. And so when you put this together, I think shares are undervalued. And I think we're going to see a strong next 12 months."
Not all is good for Apple. The stock trades at around 35x forward earnings while growth is decelerating. Revenue growth is expected to fall back to single digits in FY27 once the current upgrade cycle matures. Q4 guidance already shows the slowdown starting, with revenue growth of 9% to 11% versus 16% in Q3. That makes Apple the slowest grower in the Magnificent Seven outside Tesla, yet it trades at the highest multiple. Meta grows over 20% at roughly 19x forward earnings. Alphabet trades at 18x. Amazon at 23x. Microsoft at 25x. Apple is at 35x.
Apple is losing the AI race and outsourcing its way through it. The new Siri runs on Google's Gemini model. Apple reportedly pays around $1 billion a year for it. Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon have ways to monetize their cloud platforms. Apple is renting intelligence from a direct competitor and has no clear way to make money off it.

Digital advertising spending in 2026 is expected to expand unevenly. According to the IAB's 2026 Outlook Study, overall US ad spend is projected to grow by 9.5% this year, with social media advertising growing 14.6%, well outperforming the broader industry. However, growth is not evenly spread across advertiser sizes, with larger consumer firms lowering marketing expenditure as one of the fastest ways to maintain profitability amid wary consumers and narrowing margins.
That's the backdrop in which Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) is placing a significant bet: while the biggest social platforms compete for the same narrowing pool of massive brand advertisers, Reddit is slowly opening the door to small and medium-sized businesses that couldn't previously manage the cost of creating a personalized ad campaign.
That shift became clear when Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) released a beta version of Reddit Community Intelligence on July 10, an AI-powered, free-form ad generator that provides advertisers with AI-generated creative recommendations customized to certain communities instead of forcing them to start from scratch. The tool is deliberately designed to make campaign creation easier for advertisers targeting community-specific audiences, which have traditionally found platform advertising too resource-intensive to bother with.
Wall Street research desks realized the structural significance of the self-service shift. On July 13, Citizens ***** yst Andrew Boone confirmed his Market Outperform rating and $240 price target for Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT), citing automated self-service technologies as a key revenue driver. Boone emphasized that lowering friction for smaller advertisers enables Reddit to capture previously untapped performance budgets, resulting in long-term, lower-funnel revenue streams.
Crucially, Reddit's advertising momentum was accelerating even before the Community Intelligence tool shipped. On July 10, Jefferies, drawing on conversations with agencies, added that Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) continued to gain share in social media advertising through the second quarter. Agencies said that this was due to the platform's large and growing audience, growing reach, and more personalized targeting, a read that preceded the Community Intelligence launch and shows the platform was already winning before the tool even shipped.

Saudi Arabia's AI champion HUMAIN has signed its first sports sponsorship, partnering with Al Nassr, the Riyadh soccer club where superstar Cristiano Ronaldo plays, as it looks to integrate its AI offerings into the team.
The agreement will see HUMAIN's logo on Al Nassr's jerseys and new training center. HUMAIN also plans to deploy its sports technology unit and its interactive entertainment platform at the club.
HUMAIN aims to use the sponsorship deal to "go beyond the traditional sponsorship model," chief executive Tariq Amin said. "Together, we'll look at how solutions such as HUMAIN Sport and HUMAIN Create can help shape the next generation of fan engagement, from more personalized digital experiences to new forms of AI-powered content.
HUMAIN declined to comment on the financial details of the deal.
The sponsorship is also expected to provide a financial boost for Al Nassr. The club — which, like HUMAIN, is owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund — is reported to have more than $200 million in debt, complicating efforts to sign new players this summer.
