Africa has only ever had one Ballon d'Or winner, and the wait for someone to emulate George Weah is likely to be extended further after this year's nominations were revealed.
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi and Senegal forward Sadio Mane are the continent's two names on the 30-strong list.
Both players have previously recorded top-six Ballon d'Or finishes but, after a year in which Spain lifted the Fifa World Cup and Kylian Mbappe netted 10 goals to become the tournament's all-time top scorer, the chances of the Paris St-Germain right-back or the Al-Nassr winger lifting the coveted trophy appear slim.
And it is not the first time that Africa has failed to make a big impact.
Part of the reason for the historic lack of success is down to the fact the award, which was first handed out by France Football magazine in 1956, was not open to players representing non-European nations until 1995.

Lazio are eyeing a deal to bring Croatian midfielder Marcelo Brozović back to Serie A following the expiration of his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.
The experienced midfielder spent eight years at Inter between 2015 and 2023, making over 300 appearances for the Nerazzurri, and according to Calciomercato.it, he is open to a return to Italian football.

Furthermore, the reports claim that Lazio head coach Gennaro Gattuso has specifically asked the upper management for a midfielder of similar qualities to Brozovic and the club are therefore considering a move.
After a slow start to the summer transfer window, Lazio accelerated their business in the closing stages of the market, securing deals for the likes of Albert Guðmundsson, Andrea Pinamonti, and Josip Šutalo.

Just 105 days separate the Aston Villa triumph in the Europa League final and the end of the transfer window in England. In that short ******* e of time, the villans have gone from euphoria to uncertainty in the blink of an eye.
That's because the squad led by Unai Emery has been through a genuine revolution: the backbone of the side that had been fighting for top spots in the Premier League in recent years has been almost completely dismantled. The fact is that the Birmingham club has been affected by UEFA's financial rules, so selling players was nothing new.
In 2024, Douglas Luiz's move to Juventus prevented a 10-point deduction for breaching financial fair play; later, Moussa Diaby headed to Saudi Arabia because of PSR/SCR rules, which limit clubs in European competitions to spending only 70 per cent of their operating revenue.
Then 2025 began with the record sale of Jhon Durán to Al-Nassr. Mid-year, it was Jacob Ramsey's turn to join Newcastle – it is worth noting that academy graduates tend to generate more profit, something that leaves fans deeply frustrated when they want to see local players thrive.
Now, in 2026, Aston Villa were still forced to 'sell to buy' and saw nine players leave permanently, in a process that generated £313.5 million - staggering figures that represent the second-highest revenue ever produced by a club in a single transfer window.

Real Madrid icon Cristiano Ronaldo has on Friday continued to etch his name ever further into the history books of modern football.
This comes courtesy of his exploits in the Portuguese's first appearance of the new campaign in the Saudi Pro League.
Al-Nassr continued the defence of their SPL **** le this evening, making the trip to Al-Riyadh for a Matchday Two clash. The aforementioned Ronaldo, after sitting out the opening round of action, was forced to make do with a spot on the bench from the off in Riyadh.
After being introduced to proceedings during the 2nd-half, though, the veteran frontman wasted little time in making his presence felt.
En route to an eventual 4-0 Al-Nassr romp, Ronaldo rounded out the scoring late on, swivelling inside the penalty area before slotting home a fine left-footed finish.

Aston Villa have received a warning over Ollie Watkins' future after Al-Hilal agreed personal terms with the England striker, according to TEAMtalk, with Graeme Bailey reporting on 18 August that the Saudi giants now stand ready to open negotiations. Al-Hilal still need to clear Karim Benzema's situation before they can push ahead.
Watkins, 30, comes off a campaign. He scored 16 Premier League goals and supplied three ******* ists in 37 appearances, then added five goals and two ******* ists in 15 Europa League matches as Villa won the competition. He went to the 2026 World Cup with England, and the Three Lions finished third after beating France 6-4 in Miami. Villa secured their first continental trophy since 1982.
From Villa's perspective, this timing could hardly look worse. Jhon Duran has left for Al-Nassr at the start of the year, Tammy Abraham has struggled to impress and carries an injury concern, while teenager Brian Madjo faces a spell out after picking up an injury. That leaves Watkins as the senior focal point when Emery's side needs attacking continuity. Watkins has scored 15 or more goals in four successive European seasons, so losing that output creates a problem that money can't replace overnight.

Personal terms, however, don't equal a transfer. Villa should reject any offer and demand a fee that reflects Watkins' importance and his contract, which runs until June 2028. A bid above £60-70 million would create a different discussion because Watkins is 30 and near peak market value.

Newlywed life, it turns out, looks a lot like the life Georgina Rodríguez and Cristiano Ronaldo already had — just with rings on their fingers now.
Rodriguez and Ronaldo recently celebrated their wedding (@ FilmMagic)
The couple, who've been together for a decade, exchanged wedding vows on August 11 in an intimate ceremony at their new residence in Cascais, Portugal, with only their five children and four witnesses in attendance. The date was no accident: it marked exactly one year since Ronaldo's proposal on the same day in 2025, when Rodríguez announced their engagement with the words: "Yes, I do. In this life and all my others."
Now, with their first week of marriage behind them, the two have picked right back up with the routines of their everyday life in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where Ronaldo continues to play for Al-Nassr F.C.
Rodríguez, ever willing to let her followers in, posted a video from their striking Riyadh home showing just how little has actually shifted since the wedding. The footage captures Ronaldo doing what he does most mornings: swimming laps in the pool, cooling off, and training before the day has properly begun. The ritual has become a pattern for Ronaldo, who beats Riyadh's brutal heat this way.

Cristiano Ronaldo says this Saudi Pro League season is likely to be the last of his professional career.
The 41-year-old superstar's contract with Riyadh club Al-Nassr, signed in December 2022, expires next June, and he has told Vogue magazine that another is unlikely.
"This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy," Ronaldo said.
The Portugal forward, who has scored 976 career goals, married long-time partner, Georgina Rodriguez, earlier this month.
"I have my future all mapped out," he said. "I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard. Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.

Cristiano Ronaldo is inching closer to retirement.
"This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy," Ronaldo, 41, told Vogue in an interview published on Sunday.
Ronaldo, whose Al Nassr contract runs until June 2027, previously has stopped short of giving a timeline of when he'd be ready to call it a career.
Ronaldo announced his retirement from World Cup play but did not close the door on making future appearances for the national team. He is Portugal's all-time leader in caps (233) and goals (146) and in 2026 joined Argentina's Lionel Messi as the only men to appear in six World Cups.
Ronaldo scored three goals in the 2026 World Cup but was the subject of criticism from disappointed fans.

The soccer legend was spotted at the Al Nassr game on Saturday, Aug. 15, alongside his daughter, Bella, as he watched from the box at his first official outing with the new hair color.
Rodriguez was also pictured alongside Ronaldo wearing a baseball cap, a tan jacket, and black pants. While his family is used to seeing Ronaldo on the field, he did not play today, as he is resting amid his 2026 World Cup run playing for Portugal and missed preseason practices.

Cristiano Ronaldo is undoubtedly the biggest star to ever play in Saudi Arabia, but he has come at a huge cost for Al-Nassr.
Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in 2023, following a controversial exit from Manchester United. His arrival marked a huge shift in football, as several big names followed him to the Saudi League.
However, landing Ronaldo did not come cheap for Al-Nassr, and the long-term ramifications of landing the iconic #7 have played a part in their current financial peril.

Since joining Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo has earned an eye-watering $625 million in wages from the team across the last three and a half years.

Saudi Arabia's AI champion HUMAIN has signed its first sports sponsorship, partnering with Al Nassr, the Riyadh soccer club where superstar Cristiano Ronaldo plays, as it looks to integrate its AI offerings into the team.
The agreement will see HUMAIN's logo on Al Nassr's jerseys and new training center. HUMAIN also plans to deploy its sports technology unit and its interactive entertainment platform at the club.
HUMAIN aims to use the sponsorship deal to "go beyond the traditional sponsorship model," chief executive Tariq Amin said. "Together, we'll look at how solutions such as HUMAIN Sport and HUMAIN Create can help shape the next generation of fan engagement, from more personalized digital experiences to new forms of AI-powered content.
HUMAIN declined to comment on the financial details of the deal.
The sponsorship is also expected to provide a financial boost for Al Nassr. The club — which, like HUMAIN, is owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund — is reported to have more than $200 million in debt, complicating efforts to sign new players this summer.

Perhaps lost a little amid the hype of Ange Postecoglou’s appointment at Al Nassr was the news that a second Australian coach had also made the move to the Roshn Saudi League.
Like Postecoglou, he has worked in ******* an and was just recently named the Coach of the Season for the J.League’s 100 Year Vision League; the short transition season held between February and May as the competition changes its domestic calendar to an Autumn-Spring timeline.

Papas’ name might not have the same cache or weight as Postecoglou’s right now; successful stints in Scotland and England would do that.

Corinthians is very close to completing the return of forward Wesley, currently at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. According to ge, there is a verbal agreement for the loan of the 21-year-old player, who is a request from head coach Fernando Diniz.
Despite interest from Brazilian clubs, Wesley reportedly made it clear that his absolute priority would be returning to Parque São Jorge. The forward has a strong emotional bond with Timão, in addition to having family in São Paulo.
To make the deal possible and fit within the financial reality of the São Paulo club, the young player agreed to take a pay cut. Al-Nassr, which needs to free up a foreign-player spot in the squad, will cover part of his wages, while Corinthians will pay the rest.
The biggest obstacle to signing the contract, however, is the punishment imposed by FIFA. Corinthians is currently dealing with two transfer bans that prevent the registration of new players.
The debts that led to the punishment are related to the signing of defensive midfielder José Martínez from Philadelphia Union and to a fine imposed by FIFA itself. Combined, the amounts are around R$ 9 million.

Barcelona star Gavi has this weekend moved to throw his backing behind Portugal and Al-Nassr frontman Cristiano Ronaldo. This of course comes amid widespread backlash aimed at the 41-year-old over recent weeks.
En route to Portugal booking their spot in the Last-16 of the World Cup, Ronaldo has featured from the off in all four fixtures. The widespread sentiment, however, appears to be that Roberto Martínez's troops would be better served in leaning on the talents of others, before introducing Ronaldo off the bench.
The general level of his performances has long come under scrutiny, with Ronaldo, when not scoring goals, struggling to make an impact on general play.
The media and fans alike have been ruthless in their condemnation of the former Real Madrid man, whilst Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and more continue to come in for consistent praise.
Speaking to the media ahead of Spain's upcoming showdown with Portugal on Monday, the aforementioned Gavi was therefore drawn on Ronaldo's name.

The United States Men’s National Team continues to advance at the 2026 World Cup, having taken down Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 by a 2-0 margin. The tournament field continues to narrow, and the opponents grow more daunting, with Belgium hoping to spoil the co-hosts’ party and advance to the quarterfinal. The European program is looking to improve on a third-place finish in 2018, which would be quite the welcome surprise well after a golden generation. Seattle, Washington’s Lumen Field – a 72,000-seat multi-purpose stadium with a temporary stitched natural grass surface – hosts the fixture.
This is the eighth all-time meeting between the two nations, with the USMNT carrying a 1-6-0 record and falling in the most recent match, a friendly defeat (2-5) in March. Ranked 10th internationally by FIFA, Belgium reached the World Cup by finishing atop UEFA’s Group J of qualifying with a 5-0-3 record, besting Wales, North Macedonia, Kazakhstan, and Liechtenstein. At the current competition, the Red Devils claimed Group G with draws against Egypt (1-1) and Iran (0-0) and a victory over New Zealand (5-1) before requiring extra time and a fortuitous penalty to top Senegal (3-2) in the Round of 32.
Rudi Garcia was appointed to lead the program in January 2025, his first international gig after leading a variety of club sides including Lille, Roma, Marseille, Lyon, Al Nassr, and Napoli. The 62-year-old Frenchman believes that his squad is “very driven” and “aiming high” with the capacity to “achieve great things.” He has praised the “oldies” in his group, defending them against treatment as “has-beens.”
Garcia named a 26-player roster for the World Cup. The Belgian Pro League is home to three of the call-ups, while seven talents are on the books of Premier League clubs, five compete in Ligue 1, and five can be found in Serie A. Notable absences include Michy Batshuayi, Loïs Openda, Matz Sels, and Malick Fofana.

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken another record during the 2026 World Cup during Portugal’s round of 32 clash against Croatia.
Ronaldo has already put himself into the record books by scoring at six consecutive tournaments, as well as appearing at six World Cups but is hoping to end what is likely to be his last one on a high.
The 41-year-old has played in every game, even though manager Roberto Martinez has faced calls to do so, and by doing so against Croatia, has broken another record.
By starting against Croatia, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has become the oldest outfield player to feature in a World Cup knockout game at the age of 41 years and 147 days old.
Roger Milla of Cameroon remains the oldest player in World Cup history but the Al Nassr forward can celebrate another personal accolade.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister Katia has hinted that retirement may be sooner than we expect.
Ronaldo is playing in his sixth World Cup at the age of 41 and has come in for criticism for his performances so far.
Many believe that this will be his last international tournament with his nation and it seems that date is closer than we think.
The Al Nassr hero has already made history by becoming the first player to score at six different World Cups but wants to end it by winning the biggest prize of them all.
In the past Ronaldo has hinted that he would continue playing until he reaches 1,000 goals but sister Katia Avero has admitted that he may call it quits this summer after hearing from a reliable source.

Is Cristiano Ronaldo retiring? Portugal star's sister says legend will step away from international soccer after World Cup originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Love him or hate him, Cristiano Ronaldo has certainly left his mark on the pitch.
With nearly 1,000 goals for club and country under his belt, the Al-Nassr and Portgual superstar has reached the highest of zeniths during his glittering career. At 41, though, things have gotten slightly more turgid for the gifted goal-scorer, who has looked far less prolific than he did during his Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus years.
Ronaldo has been something of an albatross in Roberto Martinez's attack, failing to offer much support in transitions and often neutering Portugal's attacks. He still has the ability to score goals — he collected 30 in 37 matches for Al-Nassr. But his all-around play has tailed off in a major way, leading some to believe the end of his international career could be nigh.
Here's what we know so far about Ronaldo's future prospects at club and international level.

Unlike Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland, who were benched in the group stage finale, Cristiano Ronaldo has played every minute in Portugal’s ongoing World Cup campaign, and head coach Roberto Martinez doesn’t think it will change anytime soon, citing the Al-Nassr star’s superb condition.
Portugal are through to the Round of 32 after finishing second in Group K behind Colombia at five points, and Ronaldo played a pivotal role. The 41-year-old striker registered a brace in the Selecao’s 5-0 win against Uzbekistan, setting multiple records in the process.
“Obviously, we don’t compare players in our team with other players to make decisions. I think that would be quite childish and very unprofessional. I can tell you that we monitor all the (player) information that we get live during the games,” Martinez told reporters.
“There are different positions on the pitch that need different needs, and we monitor that down to the detail. Cristiano is used to being in the right place at the right time. It’s more a question of mentally being strong and always being disciplined in his position,” he added.

Lionel Messi might be making the 2026 World Cup his playground but old rival Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly making history of his own.
While Ronaldo has so far not enjoyed the kind of tournament Messi has with Argentina, the 41-year-old continues to etch himself deeper into the record books.
Indeed, by scoring a brace for Portugal in its 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, the Al Nassr forward broke yet another record.
Those goals mean Ronaldo is the only player to score at six men’s World Cup finals, while his appearance for Portugal against Colombia also moved him closer to Messi in another achievement.
By playing for his country against Colombia, Ronaldo appeared in his 25 World Cup game.
