LYTHAM ST. ANNES, ENGLAND – Nelly Korda put a 4-iron into the bag for the first time at a British Open this week at Royal Lytham. There won't be many drivers off the tee for her at this bunkerfest. Maybe four or five, tops, she said.
Like many, Korda has a love/hate relationship with links golf, depending on the day and the bounces. It doesn't help that it's the fifth major of the year in a packed summer schedule. She typically finds herself more on edge at this point in the season.
"I would say with it being kind of in a condensed part of our schedule, I get pretty agitated," she said, "and I think what I learned is I just need to take a step back and hit the reset ***** on sometimes."
Korda comes into the season's final major at the 2026 AIG Women's British Open with a chance to both qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame and complete the career grand slam. After a missed cut at the Amundi Evian Championship, her first time missing a weekend in two years, the world No. 1 took some time off in Prague and then headed to the ISPS Handa Scottish Open, where she finished on a high note to jump into the top 20.

Pitching development has been the Red Sox's bread and ******* er under Craig Breslow. Since Breslow took over, the organization has invested heavily in the pitching pipeline. In his first two drafts, 28 of the team's 41 picks were spent on pitchers — 29 if you count two-way player Conrad Cason. At the major league level, Hunter Dobbins, Richard Fitts, Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, and Jake Bennett have all contributed after spending time in the system.
This season, the draft was more balanced, but several pitchers were still selected in the middle and later rounds. One of them was left-hander Brett Lanman out of Abilene Christian University, selected in the fifth round. Lanman, like many of the pitchers acquired by Breslow during his tenure as Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer, is huge. He's listed at 6-5, 230 pounds, and uses that frame to extend down the mound and help his pitches play up. While no two pitchers are the same, he's excited to get to an organization with a recent track record of getting young arms to the major leagues.
"I'm ready to get to work, cause these guys know what they're talking about," Lanman said. "They've developed these guys, and they're in the big leagues. It's like, man, they know, they know what it takes to get a left-handed pitcher into the big leagues pretty quickly."
Draft picks, to an extent, are lottery tickets. It's incredibly rare for a draft pick to enter the league as a major league-level talent. Paul Skeneses (Skenesi? Skenes?) don't grow on trees, and if they did, they'd all be first-round picks. Lanman, as a fifth-round pick, is far from a finished product. If he were, his ERA in his final season at ACU likely would have been lower than 5.35. The Red Sox didn't select the lefty because of his college results. They picked him because of who they believe he can become.
Potential is based on traits, such as being huge and left-handed. Lanman is both huge (6-5, 230) and left-handed. He also has a low release point and plus extension, creating a flat attack angle for his fastball. Most starting pitchers who succeed have a fastball as the foundation. Lanman knows that his heater is what's brought him this far, and that's what the Red Sox will want to build upon.

The Red Sox made an initial strike on the trade market this weekend when they made the 1-for-1 deal that sent lefty starter Connelly Early to the Nationals for breakout star Curtis Mead. It appears they aren't done, either. Here's what we're hearing on Boston's plans ahead of the trade deadline, which is Monday (August 3) at 6 p.m. ET.
º The Red Sox are keeping an open mind ahead of Monday, but according to major league officials, they're targeting three main needs. First, the club — like every contender this time of year — is interested in adding pitching depth, not just at the back end of the rotation but also in the bullpen. Secondly, catching upgrades remain on the table. Lastly — and perhaps most surprisingly — the club is in the shortstop market.
The addition of Mead at second base hasn't stopped Breslow from continuing to look for an infield bat and one rival evaluator said the belief is that the Red Sox are looking for a "long-term" option at shortstop. The market is rich with big-name candidates who may or may not move, including the Angels' Zach Neto, Houston's Jeremy Peña, the Mets' Francisco Lindor and Washington's C.J. Abrams. Considering the potential pending lockout — and a very poor position player class in free agency this winter — Boston may be looking at this deadline as an opportunity to settle that position.
That search comes with its complications. Landing a shortstop would signal the Red Sox waving the white flag on Trevor Story, whose Red Sox tenure has been defined by injuries but also a massive amount of respect for the leadership he brings. Adding Mead and a shortstop makes the pathway to regular at-bats much less clear for Marcelo Mayer moving forward. And perhaps most strikingly, it further clogs the pipes ahead of the arrival of top prospect Franklin Arias, who was just promoted to Triple-A.

On the ESPN College Football podcast, Dan Wetzel asked: is Michigan football poised to surprise pundits across the sport in 2026? His compatriot there on the writing side, Bill Connelly, notes in his preview that if a few things go right for the maize and blue, a deep run could be in their future.
In his feature-length write-up on the conference, the Wolverines aren't one of Connelly's contenders for the ****** le and beyond -- such belongs to Ohio State, Oregon, and Indiana -- but Michigan is in the same category as USC, Penn State, Washington, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, UCLA, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Northwestern as schools that 'could be a couple of breaks away from a run."
Of course, Michigan is thought of much more highly than, say, UCLA, Maryland, and Northwestern, but Connelly asks a couple of questions that the answer will determine the team's ceiling in 2026.
Whittingham's bona fides are top notch, but I do have two big questions.
1. Can the hard-nosed overachiever coach properly connect with and motivate a roster of blue-chippers? Going from managing a roster of chip-on-their-shoulder underdogs (relatively speaking) to leading higher-caliber recruits with higher expectations has tripped up plenty of coaches through the years. And that's without getting into the fact that Whittingham is 66 years old. (Between Patterson and Whittingham, it's a big year for 66-year-olds.)

Charlotte Naughton's golfing career was already on an upward trajectory, but the teenager will hit fast forward.
That is because she is preparing to tee up in the AIG Women's Open - the first major of her career.
Still 18, Naughton only secured her spot at Royal Lytham & St Annes this week by virtue of winning the European Ladies Amateur Championship in Sweden on Sunday.
Now the young amateur heads to Lancashire to take her place alongside Charley Hull, Nelly Korda and the other star names of women's golf when the tournament begins on Thursday.
"I've always dreamed about it," Naughton told BBC Radio Newcastle. "I never really knew it would come this quick but I'm so happy and so proud to be able to play."

WEST SACRAMENTO — Newly-acquired Curtis Mead left his Red Sox debut during the fifth inning Monday due to a left wrist contusion after getting hit with a pitch earlier in the game.
Athletics starter Jack Perkins hit Mead on the left wrist with a 94.9 mph four-seam fastball to lead off the fourth inning.
Mead remained in the game and played at second base in the bottom of the fourth inning. But the Red Sox replaced him at second base with Anthony Seigler to begin the bottom of the fifth inning.
Boston acquired Mead from the Nationals for starting pitcher Connelly Early on Saturday night.
"I was shocked, excited, a bunch of different emotions," Mead said Monday. "Just really excited to be here. And I didn't sleep a whole lot Saturday night."

The Oklahoma Sooners enter the 2026 season believing they have the talent to compete for the program's eighth national championship. Oklahoma is still searching for its first national championship since the 2000 season.
The Sooners have had several opportunities to end that championship drought over the past two decades. Oklahoma reached the BCS National Championship Game three times: in 2003, 2004 and 2008, but came up short each time. The Sooners have also made the College Football Playoff five times but are still seeking their first CFP win.
ESPN's Bill Connelly identified the biggest "ifs" facing several national championship contenders entering the season.
If John Mateer's floor gets a little higher. Mateer is tough, fearless and, according to OU's social media, strong as ****** . But he finished 50th in Total QBR last season. Though some of that can be attributed to the numbers he posted while rushing back from a hand injury, he took 21 sacks in his last eight games and threw four picks with a 58% completion rate in his last three. Garrett Crochet didn’t choose to come to Boston, but he did choose to stay here. After making just one start as a member of the Red Sox (on the road in Texas), Crochet signed a six-year contract extension to remain with the organization through at least 2030. He was a standout on the field in his first season with the team, and while he hasn’t been able to replicate that this season, he’s working to endear himself to the community by partnering with Sam Adams for the release of Crochet’s Pale Ale, which is on tap at bars, taprooms and restaurants in the New England area and available as part of the “Our City. Our Beer” variety pack.
“A big thing for me was ingraining myself in the Boston culture, and Sam Adams is really that to a T,” Crochet said.
He isn’t wrong. When the Scots descended upon Boston for the World Cup, they drank the Sam Adams Downtown Taproom out of Boston Lager. He’s also made a habit of dominating the Yankees. In four regular season starts, he’s posted a 3.29 ERA and a 36.8% strikeout rate, as well as 7.2 innings of one-run baseball in the postseason. I conducted the interview from a hotel room in Milwaukee while on a bachelor party, and joked that the bachelor was upset with Crochet for hurting his family team. Crochet apologized but quickly rescinded it upon learning that the bachelor is a Yankees fan.
Crochet hasn’t pitched since April, but the rotation has picked up the slack in his absence. That rotation is comprised largely of huge, left-handed pitchers. Each arm is different, but Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, Ranger Suarez, and Jake Bennett all come armed with a four-seam fastball, cutter/slider, and some kind of breaking ball. Crochet’s best utilized standing on the mound, but because of the similarities with his teammates, he’s able to contribute from the bench.
“There’s much more benefit to the eye test that goes on during a series,” Crochet said. “We’re playing three or four game series and it’s all lefties that we’re rolling out there, so it’s fun to watch … When a guy is in the middle of his start I’m not passing any information, you know, he went into today prepared ready to make the start and has all the information that he feels he needs to have success … if I think someone is really looking not good on the changeup, I think me and Tolle have a little bit more room to exploit [the changeup] given that other teams aren’t planning for it at all against us.”

If there's one thing his fans can agree on, Nick Warren's buzzer moment was well earned.
The 16-year-old high school football player from Plumsteadville is on his way to the central regional finals of NBC's "American Ninja Warrior" after tackling his way through six challenging obstacles to finish in the No. 10 spot in Season 18's seventh episode, which aired July 20.
At 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, Warren impressed show hosts, Akbar Gbajabiamila and Matt Iseman, as he moved through the course with remarkable speed and agility.
"He's part muscle, part hustle and all heart," said Gbajabiamila, later adding they don't see the combination of football and ninja very often.
During a watch party held Monday night, Warren was surrounded by family, friends and teammates, who shared in the excitement as they cheered on their hometown hero. Among those gathered in support was Central Bucks East head football coach John Donnelly, who wasn't surprised to see the athleticism displayed in Warren's successful run.

The 16-year-old high school football player from Plumsteadville is on his way to the central regional finals of NBC's "American Ninja Warrior" after tackling his way through six challenging obstacles to finish in the No. 10 spot in Season 18's seventh episode, which aired July 20.
At 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds, Warren impressed show hosts, Akbar Gbajabiamila and Matt Iseman, as he moved through the course with remarkable speed and agility.
"He's part muscle, part hustle and all heart," said Gbajabiamila, later adding they don't see the combination of football and ninja very often.
During a watch party held Monday night, Warren was surrounded by family, friends and teammates, who shared in the excitement as they cheered on their hometown hero. Among those gathered in support was Central Bucks East head football coach John Donnelly, who wasn't surprised to see the athleticism displayed in Warren's successful run.

After not exactly lighting the world on fire in AAA, Brayan Bello nonetheless returned to the big leagues yesterday. And he shoved: 4.1 IP, 5 K, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB.
So the obvious question is: what now? The Red Sox do have room in the rotation — at least for now — with Ranger Suárez and Connelly Early on the IL. Moreover, as we saw in yesterday’s stunted start, the team is going to attempt to limit the workload of Payton Tolle in his first full season. Yet it must be said that Bello once again came out of the bullpen yesterday, and has not yet proven that he can be as effective in a starting role this year.
So what comes next for Bello? Is he thrown back into the rotation? Does he go in on a piggybacking timeshare with Tolle for the time being?

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) — Top-ranked Nelly Korda's bid for a third straight major and fifth overall ended early when she missed the cut after the second round of the Evian Championship on Friday.
As Korda scrapped to stay in the tournament, English golfer Lottie Woad carded a 7-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead from overnight leader Aki Iwai of ****** an.
Korda had a poor opening round of 74 on Thursday and, although she improved with 69 on Friday, her 1-over total left her tied for 67th and she missed the cut by one stroke. She last missed a cut at the 2024 Women's PGA Championship.

The Evian Championship tees off by the lake in Evian on Thursday with Nelly Korda chasing a third women's major of the season and Grace Kim returning to the scene of her dramatic win last year.
Kim, who beat Jeeno Thitikul on the second playoff hole last year, said on Wednesday a first major **** le had given her added self-confidence.
"You know, golf can really humble you quite quickly, so in the times where it does get tough I think I do handle myself a lot better," the 25-year-old Korean-Australian told reporters.
Last year Kim chipped in from under a tree off the 18th green to save herself on the first playoff hole. Organisers have put in a little blue plaque to commemorate the shot.
"I saw it for the first time yesterday and it was really cool," she said.

As such, the Red Sox will need to fill in his spot in the rotation. But thanks to Monday's off-day on the schedule, it's not a decision they have to make right away. It's conceivable the Sox could get by with four starters until July 11 at Citi Field against the New York Mets.
It's also possible, however, that they could insert another starter into the mix as early as Tuesday if they wish.
"We haven't gotten that far," said interim manager Chad Tracy. "We can obviously insert someone sooner (than Saturday). Patrick Sandoval would be in play, but I don't really want to get into that because he's got a start in the minor leagues (Saturday), to get the pitch count stretched further. It's not fully productive to **** ume anything. We've got to make sure he gets out of that outing healthy and feels good.

BOSTON — As the Red Sox await further information on Connelly Early’s sore elbow, the club will shake up its pitching staff before Wednesday’s matinee against the Nationals.
Early is not being placed on the injured list — at least yet — because the Red Sox are still gathering information on his injury. Regardless, the club designated veteran reliever Tommy Kahnle for **** ignment and is summoning lefty Alec Gamboa to Boston for Wednesday’s game, according to sources.
Cutting bait with Kahnle clears a 40-man roster spot for the impending addition of corner infielder Brett Harris. The Red Sox and Athletics are finalizing a minor trade that will send Harris to Boston and minor league pitching prospect Ben Hansen to the A’s.
Kahnle, who joined the Red Sox in early June when the club added him to its roster so he wouldn’t opt out of a minor league contract and pursue opportunities elsewhere, was shelled in Tuesday’s 9-1 loss to Washington. The righty allowed four earned runs (on four hits) in the eighth inning, continuing a pattern of poor performances. After beginning his tenure with five shutout innings over four games from June 4-14, Kahnle allowed eight earned runs in his last four innings. His ERA sits at 8.00.

Tamworth have signed forward Kieren Donnelly from Boston United for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old is the 11th signing made by the Lambs since the takeover of the club by US businessman Abdullah Ashraf.
Donnelly was loaned to Kidderminster Harriers in March and contributed eight goals in 15 games, including one in their 2-0 win over South Shields in the National League North promotion final.
"He's quite rightly had lots of interest over the summer and the fact he's chosen Tamworth is a real coup for the club," said Tamworth boss Andy Peaks.

"I was just trying to take it a shot at a time really," Korda explained of her round. "I didn't know where the leaders were at, so I was just trying to focus on myself."
This is just the third time all year that Korda hasn't finished in first or second place — which is frankly a remarkable statistic on the LPGA Tour. It's important to remember that winning is, well, exhausting. And she plans to get some much-needed rest on the upcoming off week.
"You guys made that such a big thing," Korda told reporters after the final round. "I didn't think about that, no. Like not -- I was just kind of disappointed in the way that I played this week, not that I came up short really."

CHASKA, Minn. — Haeran Ryu recovered from a rough start to secure her first career major ******* le, winning the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship by two strokes over Ina Yoon on a windy Sunday at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
Ryu shot a 2-under 70 to finish at 13-under 275 and become the sixth South Korean to win the event over the last 12 editions, flashing a big smile as she holed her last putt and friends ran out to douse her in celebration.
