HONOLULU (AP) — Communities still recovering from last weekend's hurricane in Hawaii could get pounded again in coming days from another tropical system gaining strength over warm Pacific waters.
Hurricane Lala tore roofs off houses, uprooted trees, covered roads in mud and rocks and left many households without electricity. With thousands of homes and businesses still in the dark Thursday, forecasters warned yet another tropical cyclone is likely to approach the islands soon.
A depression moving west and northwest could become a tropical storm in the coming hours and pass near or south of Hawaii's Big Island over the weekend or early next week, the U.S. Central Pacific Hurricane Center said. That system could dump up to 15 inches (38 centimeters) of rain on the Big Island and trigger life-threatening flooding, mudslides and rip currents, it added.
Forecasters said the disturbance had top sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph) and was located at midday Thursday about 900 miles (1,445 kilometers) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii.
"There's definitely tension in the air'' at the thought of more rain in communities that floodwaters turned into rivers, said Tiffany Edwards Hunt, a teacher living in Keaau, on the east side of the Big Island. "There were some areas that were completely washed out."

The season kicked off in Nevada over the weekend, although the weather, specifically lightning storms, caused some delays and cancelations. Two of the state's top three teams suffered tough inter-sectional losses while top ranked Bishop Gorman looks ready for their ******* anic top five national matchup.
Another jam-packed slate is on deck as teams continue their quests for a state ******* le. Below are the top 25 Nevada high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of Aug. 18.
The Gaels beat Losee 41-0 in a game that was called at halftime due to weather. A lighting storm in the area delayed the game nearly two hours. Junior quarterback Ace Amina got the start and finished an efficient 4-4 for 70 yards and a touchdown and the defense was lights out led by fast rising sophomore edge Braylon Ivory. Next up for Gorman will be their highly anticipated matchup against national power Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco August 21 in a game pitting a pair of perennial top 10 powers.
Liberty lost a tough one to a very good Honolulu (Hawaii) Mililani team 31-24. The Patriots led at halftime 24-14 but couldn't get the offense rolling in the second half. BYU running back commit Ezra Sanelivi had an impressive 1st half including a 56 yard touchdown run and athlete Selby Griego had nearly 200 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. The Patriots have a couple of weeks off and then will have another tough test in Lehi (Utah) Skyridge, ranked No. 5 in the state, on September 4.
The Cougars kick off their season on Saturday (Aug. 22) against Carson.

After electing to un-retire, former Detroit Lions edge rusher and three-time Pro Bowler Za'Darius Smith is eying a potential comeback. Smith reportedly worked out for the Cleveland Browns on Thursday after playing just five games with the Philadelphia Eagles last season.
Smith, who turns 34 in early September, previously played for the Browns in 2023 and 2024. In his first year with the team, he registered 5.5 sacks to help Cleveland make the postseason and recorded five sacks in nine games in 2024 before Detroit acquired the former Kentucky Wildcat in their playoff push.
Smith recorded 12 total tackles (seven solo, five ***** isted), along with four sacks, three stuffs, and one pass defended in his eight games in the Honolulu Blue and Silver.
A fourth-round pick by Baltimore back in 2015, Smith has appeared in 145 games with 98 starts for the Ravens, Packers, Vikings, Browns, Lions, and Eagles.
With the Browns shipping off All-Pro edge rusher Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster offseason trade, Cleveland has been looking for veteran edge rusher help alongside newly-acquired Jared Verse and starter Alex Wright.

JB Global Capital, an investment firm, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The fund declined 12.1% in Q2, largely driven by Alibaba, its largest holding. However, since inception on January 3, 2023, the fund has returned 109.7%, compared with 94.4% for the S&P 500. Additionally, please check the fund's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, JB Global Capital highlighted Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:LULU). Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:LULU) designs, distributes, and retails athletic apparel, footwear, and accessories. On August 10, 2026, Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:LULU) closed at $127.80 per share. The one-month return of Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:LULU) was 8.93%, and its shares lost 33.76% over the past 52 weeks. Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:LULU) has a market capitalization of $14.51 billion.
JB Global Capital stated the following regarding Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:LULU) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"In September 2025, I published Investment Case: Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:LULU), calling the stock compelling value at $162 per share. The thesis rested on a business trading well below what its fundamentals justified: a debt-free balance sheet, 58% gross margins against a 33% industry average, and a brand strong enough to sustain 37% operating margins in both North America and mainland China. Triangulating across a DCF, relative comps to Nike and Adidas, and net ***** et value, I arrived at a fair value range of $194-280 per share. Today, the stock trades at roughly $123 per share, 24% below my initial entry.
So what went wrong? Two things: one about my own process, and one about how little of the future can be known in advance. The first is the limits of backward-looking ***** ysis. My thesis leaned heavily on trailing financials that were real, but historical. Since then, gross margin has compressed, operating margin has contracted, and ROE is down nearly 10% from a year ago. None of this means the business is broken. The balance sheet is still debt-free with $1.5 billion in cash, margins remain well above most apparel peers, and I still hold the position at roughly 9% of the portfolio. But it's a reminder that heavily underwriting the past for an exceptional business is an easy way to end up underwater on a position.…" (Click here to read the full text)

Since teams are now able to schedule up to 32 regular-season games with no multi-team event exemption/requirement—starting with this season—this page will focus solely on bracketed and other multi-day/multi-game events (think Players Era and round-robin tournaments). Since there's no need to set up scheduling arrangements masquerading as exempt tournaments, there's no longer a need for me to track what every single D1 program is doing.
Teams may also now participate in more than one tournament per season!

USC Trojans quarterback Jayden Maiava was eligible to enter the NFL Draft last year, but he wisely decided to return to school. His statistical numbers were definitely there, and he might have indeed been a mid-round pick, had he entered the 2026 draft.
However, the Honolulu, Hawaii native opted-in to the Alamo Bowl last season, for a game that almost all of his key teammates opted-out of.
Maiava committed to play, performed very well in the postseason game, and then returned for another season with the Trojans.
Right now, he's solidly projected to a be a day two selection, and he's on pretty much everybody's top ten QB list for the 2027 draft. He's got prototypical size and throws a great deep ball, but he's still pretty turnover **** e.
Not to mention he also needs to work on improving how he works through his progressions.

California hired Tosh Lupoi to be its new head football coach, bringing the former Oregon defensive coordinator back to his alma mater. It hasn't taken him long to get the Golden Bears on the right track from a recruiting standpoint.
Doing its best to go toe-to-toe with the best in its state and the ACC, Cal currently has the No. 21 class in the 2027 Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. As of Aug. 6, it has 25 total commits, including 11 four-stars.
To no surprise, the in-state trail has served Cal well. It has commitments from five of the top 25 prospects in the Golden State and 16 in-state prospects overall. The headliner is a top-100 overall recruit in Westlake Village (Calif.) Westlake four-star wide receiver Charles Davis.
The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder leads what looks like one of the best pass-catching quartets in the nation. Davis, Sacramento Grant Union four-star tight end Rahzario Edwards, Westlake four-star WR Demare Dezuern and Honolulu (Hi.) Mililani four-star WR Zion White are the four highest-ranked commits in the class.
Sutter (Calif.) four-star EDGE Troy Bowens is the top-ranked commit on the defensive side of the ball. His pledge came in March and was an early catalyst for the Bears as they began to stack recruiting wins throughout the spring.

The Men's First Team beat Chelsea 1-0 in their first friendly of the pre-season Summer Tour.
The victory was part of the Hong Kong Football Festival 2026. The decisive moment came courtesy of Edon Zhegrova, who scored a superb goal in the second half of what was a tightly contested match.
Juventus got off to a very good start, immediately posing a threat with a long-range shot from Manuel Locatelli, set up by Douglas Luiz, which went just wide. As the minutes ticked by, however, Chelsea stepped up a gear, taking control of possession without, however, managing to take the lead.
The English side came close to scoring first with a header from Danny Welbeck following a cross from Geovany Quenda, then with Quenda setting up Marco Palestra, who was denied by an excellent defensive intervention from Pierre Kalulu. In the 29th minute, it was Michele Di Gregorio who came to the Bianconeri's rescue to save a close-range effort from Jamie Gittens.
Juventus responded with character, particularly towards the end of the half. Jeremie Boga created several dangerous moments down the left flank, first delivering a dangerous ball into the Chelsea box and then testing Robert Sanchez twice, who was on hand to make the saves. The teams went into the break with the score at 0–0.

It has been a few years since we last faced Juventus on the pitch. We've been on similar paths even if not exactly parallel, with the (once) Italian juggernauts failing to win their national league for six years and counting.
As always fitness, tactics and team chemistry take precedence in a preseason game. But if we can come out on top against a fellow embattled giant, then why not push for it?
Chelsea starting lineup (4-2-3-1):
Sánchez | Palestra, Fofana, Tosin, Hato | Caicedo (c), Nicoll-Jazuli | Quenda, João Pedro, Gittens | Welbeck
Substitutes from: Penders, Sharman-Lowe, Curd, Slonina, Sarr, Subuloye, Anselmino, Acheampong, Diakité, Essugo, Lavia, Walsh, Watson, Kellyman, Satpayev, Kavuma-McQueen, Estêvão, Mudryk, Neto, Jackson, Delap
Juventus starting eleven:
Di Gregorio | Kalulu, Gatti, Kelly, Çelik, Locatelli (c), Douglas Luiz, Cambiaso, Miretti, Boga, Milik

Mililani collected nine of 13 first-place votes to claim the No. 1 ranking in the first Honolulu Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 of the season.
The Trojans are stoked about the arrival of two major offensive playmakers: quarterback Hunter Fujikawa and wide receiver Zion White. The two played together as sophomores at Punahou in 2024. White transferred to IMG Academy as a junior, but returned to the islands this year.
Fujikawa played three seasons at Punahou before enrolling at Mililani for his senior year.
Defending Open Division state champion Campbell received three first-place votes and is No. 2. On Friday, the Sabers will visit No. 7 Waipahu. Campbell will not host a football game this fall, the third year in a row without a home contest due to lingering facility issues.
Kahuku, under first-year head coach David Stant, garnered one first-place vote and opens the season at No. 3. Stant was the offensive coordinator last year. In 2009, he guided Kamehameha to a state championship.

While Tropical Storm Bertha continues to spin in the Gulf, Hurricane Fausto is churning up rough seas in the Pacific, and could impact Hawaii next week, forecasters said.
Although the center of the 80-mph hurricane is more than 1,000 miles from the U.S. West Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center, "swells generated by Fausto are affecting portions of the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula and the coast of southern California."
"These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," the hurricane center said.
The National Weather Service office in San Diego warned of "elevated surf" and "strong currents" for beachgoers there from Thursday through Sunday.
Next week, the weather across Hawaii "will depend on the eventual track and intensity of Tropical Cyclone Fausto," the weather service office in Honolulu said.

USC quarterback Jayden Maiava enters the 2026 season as one of the top signal callers in college football. However, the accolades that Maiava has received go beyond the field of play.
This week, Maiava was nominated for the 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Much of Maiava's nomination is due to the youth football camp that he hosted in his home state of Hawaii this spring.
"For Maiava, giving back to the community that raised him is deeply personal," USC wrote in a press release. "In June of 2026, he returned to Honolulu's Pālolo Valley where he hosted a free youth football clinic for more than 350 local children ages 6 to 14, transforming a day of football instruction into a meaningful event centered on mentorship, inspiration and opportunity. Throughout the clinic, Maiava taught football fundamentals while emphasizing teamwork, perseverance and the importance of believing in yourself despite adversity, drawing from his own journey from the Pālolo Valley to the highest levels of the sport. Extending his impact beyond the field, proceeds from event t-shirt sales were donated to Aloha 1st Athletics, a local nonprofit dedicated to leadership, character development and mental health support through sports, reinforcing his commitment to investing in the next generation and strengthening the community that shaped him. Above all, Maiava encouraged attendees to lead with integrity, make a positive impact on those around them and pursue excellence in football, academics, faith and everyday life.
"Beyond his work in Hawaii, Maiava has consistently dedicated his time to serving communities throughout Los Angeles, partnering with organizations focused on food insecurity, youth development and community outreach. He has volunteered multiple times with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, helping sort and pack thousands of pounds of fresh produce for families in need, including supporting relief efforts for residents displaced by the January 2025 wildfires.
"On the field, USC returns the nation's top quarterback in Maiava. The 2025 All-Big Ten Third Team quarterback led the nation with a 91.2 QBR and has 31 career starts. As USC's starting quarterback, Maiava started in all 13 games for the Trojans in 2025. He completed 265-of-403 passes (65.8%) for 3,711 yards and 24 TDs with 10 INTs, plus he rushed for 157 yards on 54 carries (2.9 avg.) and 6 TDs. He also recorded 1 tackle and 1 forced fumble (one of two quarterbacks in the FBS to do so in 2025).

The real ramp-up to the 2026 NFL season is nearly here. On Saturday, Detroit Lions rookies will report to training camp and then Lions veterans will arrive the following Tuesday on July 28.
With just 10 days until the Lions' training camp fan schedule begins on Sunday, Aug. 2, it's a good time to recap the offseason that was. That goes for fans that have bled every Honolulu blue second of it, and it goes for Lions fans that are looking to get back up to speed on everything they might have missed.
Let's start this 10-part series by taking a look at one of the new, key figures in the Motor City: first-year offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
A quick look at the Lions' offensive numbers from the 2025 season looks good:
Scoring offense: 28.3 points per game (ranked tied-4th in the NFL)

How popular are Costco's gas pumps? The chain had to open its own standalone gas station, apart from the store, just to accommodate customer demand. The retailer is now pumping gas at a station in Southern California, with a second station planned for Honolulu, the Wall Street Journal reports. Both sit a mile or two from the nearest warehouse.
"They're really intended to either alleviate some of the capacity constraints in the gas station that exists at the warehouse today or we just can't get a gas station on the same premises," said Costco CFO Gary Millerchip. The stations will keep Costco's signature discounted pricing, as fuel prices continue to rise.
CEO Ron Vachris told investors the five weeks ending mid-May were the highest gas-sales weeks in company history, pulling in members using Costco's pumps for the first time. Those first-time fuel customers tend to spend more overall, he added.
Costco has had another retail win lately, too. Sales for a retro 1980's Esprit fleece crewneck completely sold out over the weekend. Whether it's filling up the tank or the closet, Costco members are getting their fill this month.

The logistics industry has spent the past few years talking about robots, warehouse automation and artificial intelligence. This year, that talk has turned into real money.
But the way companies are spending it looks different from what it did even two years ago. Instead of chasing fully automated "lights-out" warehouses, most operators are building hybrid systems that mix people, robots and software in ways they can adjust as conditions change.

Tanner Kagimoto and Josyah Napoleon-Umeda don’t let the giants get their way.
Instead, they let their bats do the talking. Kagimoto, a Kaiser standout, belted a two-run inside-the-park homer and a bases-clearing triple, and scored the game-winning run as the Hawaiian Stars rallied to edge the Aloha Stars 12-11 in 10 innings at the SportStan Sporting Goods Chace Numata Senior Classic on a sunny Friday afternoon at Hans L’Orange Park in Waipahu.
Napoleon-Umeda had the game-winning, walk-off single to score Kagimoto. Napoleon-Umeda finished 3-for-4 with a walk, a sacrifice fly, a home run, two RBis and a stolen base, and also pitched a scoreless third inning, allowing one hit. He was named the game’s MVP, and collected a pristine glass trophy tinted in purple. That capped a superlative senior year. In May, Honokaa captured its first Division II state championship.
Kagimoto, a Hawaii Pacific signee, was named the offensive player of the game and was gifted a new bat. Another Cougars senior, Noah Sham, was named defensive player of the game and received a new glove.
On Friday, Napoleon-Umeda and his mother, Ui, were up before 4 a.m. to make the drive to Kona International Airport along with two Dragons teammates. They departed just after 6 a.m., landed in Honolulu and made their way to Waipahu.

HONOLULU (AP) — A Grand Canyon river rafting guide who aimed to become the first American woman to row across the mid-Pacific solo has completed a record-breaking journey from California to Hawaii.
Hundreds gathered to cheer on Kelsey Pfendler as she pulled into a Honolulu harbor Friday night on her 21-foot row boat, Lily, after nearly a month and a half at sea, local media reported.
Pfendler, who launched from Monterey, California, in May, set out to become the first American woman, youngest woman and fastest woman to make the more than 2,400-mile journey solo, according to her website. Hundreds of thousands of people followed along with her journey on social media, where she shared the highs, lows and quirks of her trek in videos taken as she bobbed alone on the vast ocean.
Pfendler appears to have broken both the previous women's speed record as well as the men's speed record, according to records maintained by Ocean Rowing Society International, which adjudicates ocean-rowing achievements for Guinness World Records. The organization didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from The **** ociated Press about Pfendler's finish.
The rowing society's online records showed Saturday morning that Pfendler finished in just under 44 days, faster than the previous comparable female record holder's 86 days or the male record holder's 52 days as recorded by both the society and Guinness World Records.

Previously, we reported that Abu Dhabi's flagship crude, Murban crude, has rapidly risen to prominence, with Murban crude futures having rapidly evolved from a regional benchmark into a primary global pricing standard. Known for its high API gravity and low sulfur content, Murban serves as a globally recognized energy benchmark traded on the ICE Futures Abu Dhabi (IFAD) exchange. By offering continuous screen-trading, deep liquidity and the removal of destination restrictions, Murban has bypassed older, restricted benchmarks like Platts Dubai, introducing unprecedented transparency and price discovery to Middle Eastern crude.
However, the Middle East conflict has upended oil market dynamics, giving Asian refiners a distinctive advantage.
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) is now transitioning the Official Selling Prices (OSPs) for its three offshore crude grades--Upper Zakum, Das, and Umm Lulu--from a differential against Murban futures to a differential against the Dubai benchmark. This change will apply to prompt cargoes loading two months ahead, while the flagship Murban crude remains tied to Murban futures.
ADNOC's decision to price its offshore crude grades against the Dubai benchmark instead of Murban corrects a structural economic distortion that has penalized buyers for years. Murban is a premium, light-sweet crude grade, whereas the offshore grades—Upper Zakum, Das, and Umm Lulu—are medium-sour barrels, yielding completely different product slates.
During the height of the U.S.-Iran conflict, extreme market backwardation and sudden premium demand for light ends caused front-month Murban futures on the IFAD exchange to surge. Because Upper Zakum and Das were priced as a differential pegged directly to Murban, these medium-sour barrels became artificially and prohibitively expensive for Asian refiners, completely detached from their actual physical market fundamentals. By shifting the offshore grades to a Dubai-linked formula—the undisputed global baseline for medium-sour crude—ADNOC is realigning these crudes with their true physical peers, such as Oman and Qatar's Al-Shaheen.

David Montgomery may no longer wear Honolulu Blue, but it’s clear the former Detroit Lions running back still carries a deep appreciation for the city, the organization, and the teammates he left behind.
Appearing on the “The Deebo and Joe” podcast, Montgomery opened up about his departure from Detroit, admitting that while he never wanted to leave, he eventually realized it was only a matter of time.
Montgomery joined the Lions as a free agent in 2023 and quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his physical running style and leadership. Alongside Jahmyr Gibbs, he formed one of the NFL’s most productive backfield tandems.
Still, Montgomery said he understood the business realities of the league as his career progressed.
“When I was in Detroit, I thought I was going to be there for the rest of my career,” Montgomery said as quoted by Lions OnSI. “I love the City of Detroit. They showed me an immense amount of love. Coach Campbell, a dope coach, you know. But when you start to get a little older playing the game, at a professional level, and you start to kind of see how things unfold, you gotta get met with like a tough decision. And you know, I was met with that.”

Fri.–Sun., Nov. 13–15: Normal, Ala.
2 games, triangular round-robin (The D1 Docket)
Alabama A&M (SWAC)
Cleveland State (Horizon)
West Florida (ASUN, reclassifying)
Nov. TBA: Honolulu (Rocco Miller)
Format TBD

Lululemon Athletica Inc (NASDAQ:LULU) shares rose more than 3% after shareholders approved three management-backed directors at the company's June 25 annual general meeting, helping resolve a prolonged proxy dispute with founder Chip Wilson.
The elected directors include former Levi Strauss CEO Chip Bergh, Unilever executive Esi Eggleston Bracey and finance veteran Teri List. Their appointment strengthens the board as the company prepares for incoming CEO Heidi O'Neill, who is set to take over in September.
Lululemon also confirmed that two of Wilson's nominees, former On co-CEO Marc Maurer and former ESPN chief marketing officer Laura Gentile, have also joined the board as independent directors.
A third mutually agreed director is expected to be added by October 1, expanding the board to 11 members.
The changes follow a settlement reached in May aimed at ending months of public tension between Wilson, who owns about 8.6% of the company, and Lululemon's leadership.

One of the top retail stories of 2026 has to be the total collapse of Lululemon's (LULU) market cap. At the start of the new year, the leisure apparel brand's equity was valued at over $24 billion. It's now less than $12 billion.
As someone who believes Lululemon remains a Canadian success story, even I'm starting to lose patience with a company and board that seems ***** -bent on destroying shareholder value.

A projected starting pitcher might be leaving the University of Hawaii baseball team.
Right-hander Brody Martin-Grudzielanek, who recently completed his freshman season with the Rainbow Warriors, confirmed he has entered the NCAA transfer portal.
"I'm just exploring my options as of now," Martin-Grudzielanek told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. "There is a chance I come back (to UH)."
Martin-Grudzielanek was projected to be in the starting rotation, possibly as the series-opening pitcher, if he pitched for the 'Bows in 2027.
This past season, Martin-Grudzielanek was 0-5, but he pitched to a 4.02 ERA and 1.31 WHIP while averaging 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Left-handed batters hit .182 against Martin-Grudzielanek. His fastball topped at 97 mph.

The AI trade started with chips. Now it's running into the electric grid.
US data center electricity demand could more than double by 2030, rising from roughly 167 terawatt-hours in 2023 to about 376 TWh by the end of the decade, according to a Yahoo Finance ***** ysis of government and industry data.
The increase alone is roughly enough electricity to power 20 million average US homes for a year — and closer to 25 million to 27 million homes if total power generation grows with demand.
That shift is turning power from a background cost into a frontline constraint — and making battery storage part of the AI infrastructure story.
Brett Conrad, Fixx Energy chair and a member of the founding team of Lululemon (LULU), sees storage as part of the answer.
