Sept 14 (Reuters) - Hollywood designer Bob Mackie, known for making stars such as Cher and ‌Elton John sparkle, died on Monday at ‌87, according to a post on his official Instagram account.
His career spanned five decades and included designing a Barbie doll clothes collection.
Born in 1939 into a middle-class family in Monterey Park, California, he was nominated for ‌more than 30 Emmys, winning nine. He received Academy Award nominations for costumes worn in the films "Lady Sings the Blues," "Funny Lady," and "Pennies From Heaven."
"His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world," his ‌team said in an Instagram post. His cause of death was not stated.
Mackie was known for sequins, rhinestones and glitter, but also humor. The highlight of his 11-year run for The Carol ‌Burnett Show was the "curtain dress" worn by Burnett in a sketch parodying 1939 film classic "Gone with the Wind." ‌The costume, now in the collection of the Smithsonian's American History Museum, included a brass curtain rod balanced on Burnett's shoulders and a bit ‌of valance worn as a hat.

In the lead-up to their family expanding — and as they wait to find out if they'll add another trophy to their collection — get the full rundown on Pelphrey and Cuoco's relationship.
Pelphrey and Cuoco have been together since 2022. They were set up by their shared manager and met at the Ozark premiere. Pelphrey earned his first Primetime Emmy nomination for his role in the Netflix series that year, while Cuoco received her third for The Flight Attendant.
Recalling their first meeting, Cuoco told USA Today, "I heard his voice, and I turned around, and it was like my life was over, or just starting. It hit me. It was love at first sight. We were immediately connected. I do feel like I've known him my whole life, but I wasn't ready for him. We're ready to build a life together."
In August 2024, the Hollywood power couple announced their engagement. They have yet to officially become husband and wife.

Catherine Zeta-Jones spoke out against the "nepo baby" label, calling it "horrific" and saying her children "didn't ask to be born into this." The actress has two children, Dylan Douglas, 26, and Carys Zeta Douglas, 23, with her husband, Michael Douglas, who are pursuing their own acting careers.
In an interview with The Sunday Times, the 56-year-old Welsh actress said, "They're plugging away," adding, "My daughter wanted to be Amal Clooney for a while. But you have to go with your dreams, your passion."
The actress, known for her roles in The Mask of Zorro and Chicago, said, "It's hard for them to forge a way forward on their own. This horrific phrase 'nepo baby' is horrible because these kids didn't ask to be born into this; they're finding their own way in life. But they love it, and they're good. Otherwise, Michael and I would be the first to go, 'You know what? Maybe law school looks really good.'"
Catherine got her first major break in 1987 when she joined the West End production of 42nd Street. She went on to achieve widespread recognition in the UK after joining the cast of The Darling Buds of May in 1991.
The actress told the outlet, "Until I had my own kids, I didn't realise the pressure, how big that was for a young adult – well, a teenager." She added, "I had a sniff of the joy of being in the theatre so young. I went, 'I want to do this. I can't imagine going through school and A-levels in Swansea.'"

(NewsNation) — A new study found that a rare but serious brain condition has been identified in a small number of people taking popular weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Wernicke encephalopathy is a rare neurological disorder caused by a severe deficiency of vitamin B1, also known as thiamine.
GLP-1 prescriptions for kids up more than 30,000% since 2019
Researchers identified 15 cases reported in 2023 and 2024 among people taking GLP-1 medications containing semaglutide, found in Ozempic and Wegovy, or tirzepatide, found in Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Vitamin B1 is essential for proper nerve function. Without enough of it, patients can develop confusion, problems with balance and coordination, and abnormal eye movements.

The Justice Department's push to pursue a sweeping conspiracy probe into former officials behind investigations targeting President Donald Trump has descended into turmoil and possibly new delays following the abrupt resignation of the top prosecutor overseeing the probe.
Joe diGenova, the Washington lawyer and former top prosecutor leading the South Florida-based investigation, resigned a day after a tense phone call Wednesday with Attorney General Todd Blanche, according to two people familiar with the matter. The final clash centered on diGenova's effort to block lawyers dispatched by Justice Department headquarters from ***** isting the probe, following broader disagreements with top Justice officials over its pace.
Among the disputes that added to tensions between diGenova and his bosses in Washington was diGenova's request for a high-security room known as a SCIF to be built at the Fort Pierce office, to make it easier for the prosecution team to store highly classified materials, two people familiar with the investigation told CNN. The team worked in an office with a special room where sensitive, but not the highest-classified, evidence could be handled. Justice Department officials told diGenova he and his team should use a SCIF at an FBI office miles away, two people familiar with the investigation told CNN.
DiGenova also pressed for more lawyers for his team. Justice officials pushed back on any claims that he was denied resources, according to two people familiar with the investigation.
For more than a year, Justice Department officials have pushed to bring criminal charges against former CIA director John Brennan, who is accused of making false statements to Congress and has been the subject of the president's ire for years. Since diGenova joined the probe in April, he's chosen to pursue a broader set of charges against several of Trump's political critics — including Brennan — who were involved in investigations of him over the past decade.

Renowned fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie has died at the age of 87.
The designer, who was best known for dressing the likes of Cher and Elton John in show-stopping ensembles, died on Monday.
"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today," reads a statement on his social media pages. His cause of death has not been disclosed.
Known for his flamboyant, over-the-top and extravagant designs, Mackie created all the costumes for The Carol Burnett Show variety series in the '60s and '70s, and Cher's looks for her TV programmes, including The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and The Sonny and Cher Show.
Mackie collaborated with the music legend many times over the years and famously designed her headline-grabbing outfit at the 1986 Oscars, where she wore a towering feathered headdress and a black midriff-baring ensemble.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) recently unveiled its new iPhone Duo, a foldable phone priced at a whopping $1,999 — and that's the starting price. The phone is priced at a premium for a company already known for premium-priced products.
If sales for the Duo take off, it could prove to be a massive growth catalyst for the business. But here's why I wouldn't hold my breath, and why I think there could be challenges ahead for the tech company.

The Duo may look enticing to consumers who love Apple products or foldable phones, but I don't think it'll capture a huge subset of the market, at least not right away. There have been many issues with foldable phones in the past, including screen creases after prolonged use, and repair costs can be high.

Legendary music and film fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie died Monday at the age of 87. His team confirmed his passing on his official Instagram page. The cause of death is still unconfirmed.
"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today," the post announced. "He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world."
Born in 1939 in Monterey Park, California, Mackie is best known for designing iconic costumes for musical stars like Cher, Elton John, Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand. He was raised throughout most of his youth by his maternal grandparents after his parents divorced when he was just two years old. He eventually began living with his father after he moved to Rosemead, California, where he attended Rosemead High School.
Mackie left Chouinard Art Institute early after he was hired to sketch for Frank Thompson at Paramount Studios. He spent part of the early 1960s working at the studio as an ****** istant designer under Ray Aghayan. He scored his first big break when Mitzi Gaynor hired him to create the costumes for her Las Vegas Revue. He continued to be a go-to collaborator for Gaynor over the years and raked in Emmys for his contributions to her 1976 and 1978 TV specials.
He became even more well-known in the Hollywood scene in the late 1960s and through the late 1970s for his work as the costume designer for "The Carol Burnett Show," which asked him to design upwards of 50 costumes a week. It was on the set of that iconic sketch variety series that Mackie met Cher. He went on to serve as the costume designer for "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" and continued to design pieces for the star in the decades that followed.

This year has been a volatile one for artificial intelligence (AI) company CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV). Its success largely hinges on demand for all things AI-related, as the company makes money by providing customers access to Nvidia's high-end chips.
Over the past 12 months, however, the stock has declined by 24%, and it's currently trading around $84 -- a far cry from its 52-week high of more than $153. Investors have been growing more concerned about AI stocks as a whole, especially ones like CoreWeave that continue to struggle with profitability.

He said that "like many technologies before it, AI brings risks, and because it is such a powerful technology, these risks are serious." He pointed to the high-profile hack of Hugging Face by OpenAI models as evidence of the need for caution.
Other chief executives joined the chorus, including ******* e Exploration Technologies, aka ******* eX, CEO Elon Musk, who said in a post on X, "Dario is right." Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay on Saturday asking the companies that build the most capable artificial intelligence (AI) models to slow down -- to pace how fast those models improve. Stock futures fell Sunday evening as investors weighed AI safety concerns, with Nasdaq futures falling the most.
Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) shares had already dropped about 5% last week, to about $218 as of this writing, before the essay came out. The chipmaker's own forecast calls for $108.0 billion of revenue this quarter.

If you turn to Gordon Ramsay for cooking advice, the legendary chef is probably going to have some useful info, but if it's frozen food you're curious about, the man has sent some mixed signals over the years. As a famous TV yeller/chef, Ramsay is known for speaking his mind on foods he won't touch, and one thing he's been keen to attack in the past is frozen food meals. While many of us might turn to a frozen pizza or burrito for a cheap, quick meal when we don't have the energy to cook, Ramsay once told Bon Appétit it's the one type of food he refuses to eat.
As for why we won't touch frozen food, Ramsay's reasons are understandable, but they're also a little tone-deaf. "It's so easy to prepare a quick meal using fresh produce, such as a simple stir-fry, but people still resort to ready meals that all taste exactly the same," he told the outlet. It's certainly true that there are plenty of quick and easy recipes if you're in a rush and that plenty of frozen foods are of less-than-ideal quality.
But in the life of most non-celebrity chefs, there are times when you simply don't have the ingredients, time, or energy to cook. Additionally, it appears that Ramsay doesn't think every frozen meal tastes the same, or else he wouldn't have launched his own line of frozen meals called "By Chef Ramsay" in 2023. Maybe his frozen chicken pot pie really is that much better?

It has been a rollercoaster year for the "Magnificent Seven" stocks, the name given to tech ******* ans Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Tesla, and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). Of the group, only Meta and Tesla are in the red for the year, down 1.2% and 18.8%, respectively, through market close on Sept. 10.

No single issue is dragging down Meta's stock; it's a combination of factors, with the two main ones being its AI spending and its ongoing regulatory issues.

In the second quarter (Q2), it spent $31 billion, which, for perspective, is more than all but 26 public companies have made in profits in their past four quarters combined.

Stanley Druckenmiller has quite a long and distinguished career as an investor. Much of this has to do with high-risk bets that have paid off enormously, such as when he and his boss, George Soros at Quantum Fund, shorted the U.K. pound for a handsome profit of what was reported to be around $1 billion.
For that reason, the trades Druckenmiller makes with his Duquesne family office matter, and his picks are taken seriously. One of the more intriguing ones is Duquesne's largest holding currently -- and for eight quarters now. It's not a famous name; rather, it's a next-generation healthcare diagnostics company that was once something of a sleeper. Here's a bit more about it.

This huge bet on the future is Natera (NASDAQ: NTRA), a medical diagnostics company that uses unique, state-of-the-art technology to evaluate a patient's blood sample. Natera isn't the only business providing these liquid biopsies, as they're known, but its personalized, tumor-informed approach makes it a best-in-class screener in numerous use cases.
The major one is oncology, which is hardly surprising given the prevalence of cancer. Natera has a set of tests for this, led by Signatera, a highly personalized one constructed from the patient's tumor profile. With this, it detects circulating tumor DNA in the blood. To say this is useful in cancer detection is an understatement, so it's hardly surprising that Natera processed roughly 296,700 oncology tests in the company's second quarter. That was up a highly impressive 57% year over year.

The inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring has drawn heavy criticism from F1 fans and drivers over the limited overtaking opportunities on the narrow circuit. Its layout reportedly made the race a dull spectacle for many, and now even Spain's Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has weighed in. Puente didn't hold back, describing the event as "an absolute dud."
Puente has kept his criticism constructive, comparing the Spanish GP with the Monaco GP, which is also known for offering limited overtaking opportunities. Monaco's narrow city streets have become increasingly challenging as F1 cars have grown larger over the decades, while significantly widening the roads is simply not a realistic option.
Despite Monaco's reputation for limited overtaking, this year's race featured 10 overtakes during the entire race, according to a social media post from Autosport. By comparison, the Madrid race last weekend saw just four overtakes.

Over the last decade and change, The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown into a behemoth franchise that spans both movies and TV shows that air with a Disney+ subscription. Fans who have watched the Marvel movies in order have seen how Tom Holland got a reputation for accidentally spoiling movies, often going viral in the process. But how does the 30 year-old actor feel about this perception?
Holland is a beloved part of the MCU, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day beating out even Avengers: Endgame's box office haul. But aside from his A+ performances as Peter Parker, he's also known for repeatedly spoiling movies, despite Marvel's tight security. In a video from the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Odyssey actor was asked about how folks are constantly dunking on him about spoilers, responding with:
There's part of me that loves it. My dad's a comedian. So having thick skin and growing up with people taking the mick out of you is like part of our upbringing, you know? My love language, I think, is taking the ****** out of me. I just love it.

Shortly after, Chingy reportedly commented on his strained relationship with Bailey and claimed that his mother manipulated the young actor into disliking him. Bailey clapped back after a few days with a post that has since gone viral.
"I've stayed quiet about my relationship with my father because I've never felt the need to share that aspect of my life publicly," he wrote. "But after seeing his comments, I feel compelled to speak for myself."
Bailey added that Chingy's statements about their relationship aren't an "accurate representation." He continued, "Saying something publicly doesn't make it true. You cannot rewrite years of absence, neglect, or lack of involvement with a few paragraphs about love, support, and being there for your child."
Bailey didn't stop there. He said he clearly understood what his relationship with his father looked like growing up. "I know who was present and who wasn't," he wrote. "I know who supported me and who didn't."
Before his post, Bailey, known for his roles in Netflix's "Family Reunion" and Disney's "Raven's Home," praised his mother, Brittany Perry-Russell, an actor and choreographer, for always supporting him.

King Charles is a doting grandfather of five, affectionately known as 'Grandpa Wales' by Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
It's now been revealed that the monarch has taken steps to make a major change to his Sandringham estate, which will hugely benefit his sporty granddaughter Charlotte.
Charles and 11-year-old Charlotte have a special bond. The King has been spotted wearing friendship bracelets made by the princess, and during a visit to Northern Ireland in May 2026, he picked up a sweet present for her.
Charles was given a beaded bag charm for Charlotte by Rachel Rose, the owner of the jewelry company Empower Flower. "Thank you, she will love that," delighted Charles said as he received the gift.
Given their sweet connection, the King's latest move perhaps comes as no surprise.

Is it possible to build hype around a new professional sport franchise if it does not play in its home city?
Those behind the Belfast Wolves, founding members of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL), think 'yes it is' and they have ambitions to attract new audiences to the sport.
Stormont was packed during a summer of international cricket, but the Wolves are so-far playing exclusively on the road. Its owners hope Belfast will host matches next year.
Until it gets its ducks in a row, the franchise's backers are working hard to get the brand known and build a fanbase.
