Three head coaches and three defensive coordinators in three seasons means Stanford won't be taking a lot of continuity into its 2026 opener against visiting Hawaii on Aug. 29.
But the Cardinal players are taking a change-can-be-good approach as they prepare for their first game under head coach Tavita Pritchard and defensive coordinator Kris Richard (pronounced Ri-shard).
"Obviously, it's not always ideal, learning a new scheme every single year," redshirt senior linebacker Matt Rose said after practice Thursday morning, "but I try to look at the positives out of it. I've learned so much about football.
"Everyone has their scheme, but at the end of the day, football is football."
Junior cornerback Brandon Nicholson said, "I think every year - no matter what the case is - our group comes in determined. And we come in receptive to whoever is our defensive coordinator and we listen."

He earned the nickname "Tre'" for being the third Edley William Griffiths in his family.
At Keller High School in Texas, Griffiths excelled in the triple-jump.
It is little wonder Tre' Griffiths is a three-tool wideout for the University of Hawaii football team. After the first two practices of training camp, 6-foot-3, 205-pound Griffiths has shown speed, hops on 50-50 **** , and Hoy-Hoy grip.
"I'm loving it here," said Griffiths, who transferred from Oklahoma State in January. "Coach (Jared) Ursua and Coach (William) Overstreet have done a really good job getting me acclimated and adjusted to the program. I've been loving it so far."
Griffiths is helping to fill a void in the Warriors' four-receiver offense. Wideouts Jackson Harris and Brandon White transferred, and Karsyn Pupunu's petition for an extra season was denied. Margin Hooks, who is Griffiths' personal trainer, called Ursua. Hooks, a former BYU receiver, and the UH receivers coach are close friends.

NEW YORK — The Minnesota Twins acquired left-handed reliever A.J. Minter from the New York Mets for minor league infielders Bruin Agbayani and Billy Amick, reinforcing a thin bullpen ahead of the trade deadline.
The 19-year-old Agbayani, who is the son of former Mets fan favorite Benny Agbayani, is a middle infielder who hit .268 in 10 games for Fort Myers in low Class A this season. The sixth-round 2025 draft pick, a native of Hawaii, has been limited by injuries.
The 23-year-old Amick batted .217 with 23 homers in 86 games for Double-A Wichita this season, playing first and third base. He was a second-round draft pick in 2024.
Minter had a 2.35 ERA in 23 innings with 20 strikeouts and only two walks. He didn't make his season debut until May 26, going more than a year between major league appearances. His 2025 season ended after 13 appearances when he injured his left lat muscle in his back and needed surgery.
Minter signed a two-year, $22 million contract with the Mets in 2025. His 2024 season with the Atlanta Braves also was cut short by a torn labrum in his left hip, but when he's been healthy he's been one of baseball's most effective late-game lefties. The 33-year-old, who was a second-round 2015 draft pick by the Braves, has a 3.18 ERA with 456 strikeouts in 382 2/3 innings over 420 career appearances.

The PGA Tour isn't leaving Torrey Pines any time soon.
As expected, the La Jolla, California, stop will remain on the calendar, though under a different – albeit familiar – name beginning in 2027. The Sentry, which transitions from its former home at Kapalua, will be contested Jan. 27-30, 2027, a week after the season-opening American Express, and then become part of the Championship Series in 2028.
The PGA Tour has already announced two other Championship-level tournaments: the longstanding Travelers Championship and a new event sponsored by Sompo, which will be played in Napa, California, next summer before relocating to another market.
A complete 2028 Championship Series schedule is expected to be released in late January and include 23 to 24 events, including the majors, Players Championship, reimagined playoffs and Cup events.
This season's Sentry at Kapalua was canceled due to ongoing drought conditions, though the PGA Tour has since scrapped its Hawaiian Swing while repurposing the Sony Open as a PGA Tour Champions event.

It's time for the annual post to highlight how the Mountain West Conference compares to the American Athletic Conference in a variety of important categories. Since this yearly post began, the American has had the advantage overall, although the MW narrowed the gap in 2024. Which one was the top Group of 5 conference in 2024? Read below to find out.
The Mountain West and American don't have many opportunities to play each other from season to season, and it's sad that that hasn't changed over the years. In 2024, the conferences played one another four times, with two of those being the CIC Trophy games, Air Force battling Army and Navy. The other two were Boise State opening against South Florida and Colorado State taking on Texas-San Antonio. Last season, all of those games ended in losses for the Mountain West teams, which is extremely disappointing. They have now lost head-to-head matchups to the American two seasons in a row.
The American's top tier enjoyed a successful season and has been seen as a top-heavy conference for years, with this year being no different. Memphis led the way with a 12-2 record (good for a winning percentage of .857). Behind them was Navy at 11-2 (.846), and Tulane at 11-3 (.786). The three-team average ends up being a .829 score for the American. On the other side of things, UNLV was the top Mountain West team with a 10-4 record (.714 winning percentage). Then, New Mexico, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Hawaii all finished with identical 9-4 records (.692). Taking the three-team average, and it comes out to a .699 winning percentage, which is a drop from 2025. Unfortunately for the Mountain West, even a good season and a top-heavy bunch of teams, the conference couldn't measure up to the American, which takes this one once again.
Playing games against Power 4 teams is usually a great measuring stick for any mid-major conference. The Mountain West continues to have a poor showing in this category, but improved in 2025, going 4-12 in 2025. That is an increase of one win from 2024, though they played four fewer games this past season. The wins over Stanford, Cal, and UCLA (twice) represent a 25% winning percentage for the conference.
The American ended up improving as well, going from 1-14 to 6-13, which amounts to a 32% winning percentage. The additional five games against P4 teams should be noted as well. Beating Northwestern, Army, and Oklahoma State last year may not mean much, but wins over Florida, Duke, and Arkansas look impressive to varying degrees. It's nice to see both conferences improve, but the American takes this category back in 2025.

The Las Vegas Raiders are set to start training camp within the next month, and as they gear up for an interesting 2026 season, a few players and/or position groups can really make or break the season. The Raiders added a plethora of talent over the last off-season, with the Raiders likely to only return starters at left & right tackle, tight end, runningback, and one wide receiver on offense. Defensively, they likely return 3 starers on the defensive line, one at safety, one at corner, and none at linebacker. Needless, to say the Raiders are turning over the roster with talent, and for a roster that has been void of young talent in previous years, that was crucial. Additionally, they see three or four of their special teams playmakers likely change hands with Daniel Carlson and Jacob Bobenmoyer out, while new kick and punt returners should take the helm as well.

The Raiders parted ways with Daniel Carlson after 8 seasons, and Carlson saw his FG rate fall steadily since 2020 going from 94.3% to 81.5% in 2025. Additionally, his abilities to hit from 50+ also fell down the board competing just 5 of 8 in 2025 after 8 of 11 in 2024, and 11 of 13 in 2022. The Raiders bring in two options, with veteran Matt Gay looking to rebound his career under DeCamillis, and rookie Kansei Matsuzawa dubbed the "Tokyo Toe, and Special-K". Gay converted 17 of his 23 attempts (74%) in 2025 though he was 4/4 in 2 games with the 49ers. He's struggled to regain his form from 2021-2022 where he 2as a Pro Bowler converting 60/64 field goals including 12/14 from 50+. Those two seasons came under new Raiders special teams coordinator, Joe DeCamillis.

As for Matsuzawa, the 2025 consensus All-American went 39/45 in his Hawaii career and another 72/72 on his PAT's. Matsuzawa is relatively new to kicking, having only done so for 5 years now, and he's not been tested from 50+ routinely which will be a big test in the NFL. Matsuzawa has the leg, and he's shown elite accuracy, but also kicking in the NFL comes with it's own challenges. The Raiders have seen their ability, and confidence, to hit field goals dip the last two seasons which has impacted not just their scores, record, but also playcalling. Las Vegas needs to be consistent at kicker to help ease pressure on the offense, and open up Klint Kubiak's playbook.
Dareke Young comes to Las Vegas following Klint Kubiak, and there's a plethora of jobs for him to take on in Las Vegas. The 6'2, 230 receiver has just 72 receiving yards in his career, but he may have a chance to take the "X" role for Klint Kubiak if he can stay consistent which has a chance to lead to 400-600 yards. Additionally, Young's best impact comes on special teams. He's been a proven gunner with a career 24 tackles and 3 FF including 2 FR, and 4 tackles in the playoffs. Young can provide as a kick

While Tropical Storm Bertha continues to spin in the Gulf, Hurricane Fausto is churning up rough seas in the Pacific, and could impact Hawaii next week, forecasters said.
Although the center of the 80-mph hurricane is more than 1,000 miles from the U.S. West Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center, "swells generated by Fausto are affecting portions of the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula and the coast of southern California."
"These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," the hurricane center said.
The National Weather Service office in San Diego warned of "elevated surf" and "strong currents" for beachgoers there from Thursday through Sunday.
Next week, the weather across Hawaii "will depend on the eventual track and intensity of Tropical Cyclone Fausto," the weather service office in Honolulu said.

Last month, USC baseball lost pitching coach Sean Allen, who was named the new head coach at Lamar. To replace him, the Trojans hired Hawaii’s Keith Zuniga. However, it appears as though that will not be the only **** istant coaching change that Andy Stankiewicz and USC make this offseason.
On Wednesday, it was reported that hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Travis Jewett will be leaving the Trojans for Vanderbilt, where he will take over as the de facto general manager. However, it took less than a day for USC to find his replacement, as Wednesday night, reports surfaced that the Trojans will be hiring veteran **** istant and longtime friend of Stankiewicz Bill Mosiello as their new hitting coach.
“Mosiello comes to USC after being an **** istant at several big-name programs in his career, including Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State, and four different schools now in the SEC,” Shotgun Spratling of 247Sports wrote. “But he is most well known as being a top **** istant at TCU for 11 of the last 13 years where he helped push the program to new heights. The Horned Frogs went to four consecutive College World Series appearances from 2014 to 2017 with Mosiello as the hitting coach.
“He had been the **** ociate head coach under Kirk Saarloos the last two seasons after a two-year stint as Ohio State's head coach. He went 60-51 with the Buckeyes and took them to their first Big Ten Tournament in a half decade in 2024, but left the position to return to Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs saw dividends right away as the team average improved 25 points in 2025, and TCU returned to the NCAA tournament (only to be beaten by USC) after not making it in 2024.
“But after TCU struggled to meet expectations this season, missing the postseason for just the second time in Mosiello's 11 years with the program, the Horned Frogs made multiple changes to their **** istant coaching staff, including parting ways with Mosiello. That opened the door for Mosiello and Stankiewicz to finally unite after more than 50 years of friendship.”

Mississippi has, to put it mildly, a complicated history when it comes to race relations. Even as times have changed and attitudes have modernized, a number of the all-time best athletes to compete in college sports did so at schools other than the state’s flagship campuses.

USC quarterback Jayden Maiava enters the 2026 season as one of the top signal callers in college football. However, the accolades that Maiava has received go beyond the field of play.

Two Visalia youth baseball teams made history over the weekend.
On Saturday, July 18, the Visalia Blues 11U baseball team defeated Tulare in a 4-3 nailbiter before taking down Elk Grove in the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament finale.
On the same day, the Blues 12U squad defeated Hilo Black of Hawaii to claim their respective regional championship.
And now, both the Visalia Blues 11U and 12U baseball teams will be heading to the 2026 Cal Ripken World Series.
"It's pretty special, but I'm not surprised by it either," Blues 11U manager Brandon Peters said.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The LPGA on Tuesday unveiled the inaugural Nanea Cup, an event being held in Hawaii next March that includes a mix of pro golfers and collegians as a way to showcase the present and future of women's golf.
The event, which will be held March 11-14 at the Nanea Golf Club in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island, features a $4 million purse. The field will include 95 LPGA Tour players along with 25 of the nation's top college golfers representing five universities: Stanford, Texas, Arkansas, Texas A&M and UCLA.
"As we continue to focus on routing, courses and purses, this event checks every box," LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler said in a statement. "Nanea is a spectacular venue, our athletes will compete for a strong purse, and fans will get their first look at one of the most celebrated golf courses in the world."
All competitors will play Thursday and Friday before the field is cut to the low 50 players and ties. College players who don't make the cut will still play Saturday to help determine team champions.
The Golf Channel will broadcast stories on college athletes and coaches to give a glimpse of the next generation of players.

A women's college golf event has been held at Nanea, and hosted by Stanford, since 2013. What started as the Pac 12 Preview became the Nanea Invitational, with an impressive champions list that includes Alison Lee, Bronte Law, Andrea Lee, Rose Zhang and Megha Ganne.

The older brother of former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has been charged after Honolulu police say he allegedly tried to lure several children to his Waikīkī hotel room by offering them gum and money, as his family says he is continuing to receive psychiatric treatment.
Batarti Gabbard, 55, was charged with second-degree custodial interference after the July 12 "stranger danger" incident at a Waikīkī hotel pool, according to police.
Honolulu police allege Gabbard approached several children, including a 9-year-old boy, asked for their names, wrote them in a notebook and offered them money and gum if they would accompany him to his hotel room.

As the college football world turns, University of Hawaii head coach Timmy Chang remains grounded in his goals.
“I think college football has changed,” said Chang, who enters his fifth season as the Rainbow Warriors’ leader. “You have to be flexible to build a roster and compete. We’re doing that. We’re a different type of program. We’re in a different location. And that poses different factors and opportunities and challenges that we have to be able to adapt.”
Fifty-four months after inheriting a disheartened program that was in emotional turmoil, Chang is navigating an evolving landscape. The transfer portal has eased the way for players to change schools without interruption. Student-athletes may now profit from use of their name, image and likeness. The House vs. NCAA settlement requires profit sharing up to $20.5 million annually per school. (UH has budgeted $5 million for NILs and profit sharing this coming academic year, with $2.5 million earmarked for football.)

Obviously, it’s too early for bowl projections, but Athlon released them to gear up for the season. The new FBS team NDSU is slated to compete in the Potato Bowl, while UNLV will be in the Armed Forces Bowl. Utah State competes in the Frisco Bowl and the New Mexico Bowl will see the Lobos and Washington State Cougars face off against one another. Hawaii is in the Hawaii Bowl and Fresno State is in the First Responder Bowl. Then, the Air Force is going to Arizona, and San Diego State will play in the new Poinsettia Bowl. If that all wasn’t enough, they place Boise State in the CFP,
College Football Network looks at the Aztecs in this preview post, as they aspire to win the Pac-12 this season. On offense, they are leaning on a heavy dose of the run game, and to great effect. Plus, they return their starting quarterback and top wide receivers, but the passing attack will need to find a way to be more effective, and the OL will need to take steps forward to help that. Over on defense, the strength is the interior defensive line and the veteran safeties in the back. They will need to replace most of the tacklers from last year and get better at stopping the run. CFN thinks that San Diego State will end up in the neighborhood of 7 wins, which is a bit disappointing after last year’s campaign.
The Aggies are seeing big jumps in their ticket sales, with their MBB already surpassing last year’s season ticket totals. De Cambria is a rookie. He went undrafted out of Arizona and signed with the Cardinals.
He played four seasons for Hawaii before transferring to Arizona in 2025. For Arizona, he started all 13 games at center. In four seasons at Hawaii, he started all over the offensive line — 12 at left tackle, nine at right guard and two at right tackle. He was All-Mountain West honorable mention in 2024.

"Freestyle Biomechanics: The Science Behind The Strokes," a book by former University of Hawaii swimming coach Jan Prins, is now available via Amazon.
The book focuses on freestyle, but also touches on "the three other competitive strokes," said Prins, who earned a doctorate in kinesiology at Indiana in 1978 and still teaches at UH. "(It) covers … every freestyle movement from stroke pattern, body position, flutter kick, hand entry to recovery and much more."
It is the culmination of nearly 50 years of coaching, presentations, research and video workshops Prins has conducted for competitive swimmers and coaches.
"It will become a continuous shelf reference for all swimmers, especially triathletes and adults," said Garry Rodrigues, swim consultant to USA Triathlon for the 2028 Olympics.

This offseason, University of Hawaii quarterback Micah Alejado is routinely clocked at 4:45.
With a lights-outs bedtime of 8:30 p.m., Alejado awakens at 4 in the morning, showers, and then arrives at UH at 4:45. Maybe earlier, never later.
"I try to be the first one there," Alehado, 21, said of the 6 a.m. start to conditioning drills. "Start warming up my body and get ready for the workout. I'm getting older. The body takes a little bit longer to get warmed up now."
Entering his third year — and second as QB1 — with the Rainbow Warriors, Alejado has embraced his leadership role.
"I want to set the example," said Alejado, whose summer schedule is built around the Warriors' training.

An apparent knee injury snuffed out whatever magic Conor McGregor planned to rekindle in his first Ultimate Fighting Championship ****** ignment in five years.

Max Holloway was awarded an anticlimactic technical knockout over the SBG Ireland cornerstone in the first round of their UFC 329 headliner on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. A disappointed and dejected McGregor (22-7, 10-5 UFC)—who had beaten the Hawaiian by unanimous decision in their first meeting in 2013—bowed out 1:09 into Round 1.

It was essentially over before it began. McGregor appeared to suffer the injury while throwing a jumping round kick inside the first 10 seconds. He collapsed on multiple occasions afterward, unable to put any weight on his right leg while he attempted to engage Holloway (28-9, 24-9 UFC). It soon became clear to all involved that McGregor was compromised to such an extent that he could not move forward with the match.

Meanwhile, former Cage Warriors champion Paddy Pimblett put Benoit St. Denis to sleep with a Peruvian necktie in the first round of their lightweight co-main event. St. Denis (17-4, 9-4 UFC) lost consciousness 52 seconds into Round 1.
Pimblett (24-4, 8-1 UFC) survived the initial burst of offense from the Frenchman and made him pay for an ill-conceived takedown attempt. The Next Generation MMA star zeroed in on St. Denis’ exposed neck, bullied him to the canvas and proceeded to tighten the strings on the necktie. Pimblett then moved to a seated position—with one leg over the back, the other over the head—and maximized torque until the onetime French Special Forces operator lost his grip on reality.

It was the second sub-minute finish for Pimblett in 28 professional appearances.

Further down the main draw, Mario Bautista avenged a January 2019 submission defeat to Cory Sandhagen and laid claim to a unanimous decision over the Elevation Fight Team rep in their three-round bantamweight rematch. All three cageside judges scored it the same: 29-28 for Bautista (18-3, 12-3 UFC).

Sandhagen (18-7, 11-6 UFC) was undone by two key moments. Bautista appeared to damage his left leg with an attempted Suloev stretch kneebar late in the first round and dropped him with a sweeping left hook in the third. The rest of their 15-minute battle was marked by give-and-take action—Sandhagen opened a cut near the MMA Lab export’s right eye in the second round—in which neither man gained a discernible advantage.

Bautista, 33, has won 10 of his past 11 bouts.

Elsewhere, Factory X mainstay Brandon Royval rebounded from back-to-back losses to Joshua Van and Manel Kape, as he dismissed Lone’er Kavanagh with a rear-naked choke in the third round of their flyweight barnburner. Kavanagh (10-2, 3-2 UFC) waved the white flag of surrender 3:40 into Round 3.

A fast finish and an action-packed flyweight bout were among the UFC 329 bonus winners.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship handed out a pair of Performance of the Night awards and a Fight of the Night bonus, with each recipient pocketing an extra $100,000 over their contracted fight purse. The fight card featured 11 finishes in total, but a couple of bouts concluded in anticlimactic fashion, with the main event ending via an unfortunate injury.
Paddy Pimblett secured a $100,000 POTN bonus for his submission of Benoit St. Denis in the co-main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It took Pimblett under a minute to put away his French counterpart, sealing one of the quickest and most emphatic victories of his UFC tenure.

King Green also earned a $100,000 POTN bonus following a dramatic first-round comeback against Terrance McKinney. Despite initially facing an early barrage from McKinney and a submission scare, Green survived and earned a first-round victory with one second to spare.

Brandon Royval and Lone’er Kavanagh bagged FOTN honors and $100,000 each for their back-and-forth flyweight clash. Kavanagh looked sharp in the early frames, but Royval showed his experience to rally back and find a third-round rear-naked choke.

After coaching in **** an for two years, Cody Kelley is rejoining the University of Hawaii men's basketball team as an **** istant coach.
Kelley, 30, succeeds Clay Wilson, who accepted an **** ociate coaching position at Cornell.
"I'm super stoked," said Kelley, who was a UH **** istant coach during the 2023-24 season.
In a news release, UH head coach Eran Ganot said: "Cody is a rising star with a tremendous basketball mind. He achieved great things during his first stop with us, and his work ethic translates directly into his coaching."
Kelley served as the defensive coordinator for the Ibaraki Robots of **** an's B League the past two seasons.

Conor McGregor returns to the Octagon for the first time in five years when he faces Hawaii's Max Holloway in a five-round welterweight main event tonight at UFC 329, closing out International Fight Week at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McGregor (22-6 MMA) has not competed since sustaining a broken tibia against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021 and has faced several personal setbacks outside of the UFC.
The former two-division champion at featherweight and lightweight was originally scheduled to return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in June 2024 to conclude their Ultimate Fighter 31 rivalry after the show aired in 2023. However, a McGregor toe injury forced a postponement and the match was never rescheduled.
McGregor, 37, returns to the welterweight division for the first time in six years. The Irishman is looking to re-establish himself as a ***** le contender while attempting to defeat Holloway for the second time, following a unanimous decision victory over him in August 2013 at a UFC Fight Night event in Boston in McGregor's second UFC fight.
McGregor said he is grateful for the opportunity to reinvigorate his career and has no immediate plans to change weight divisions after the Holloway rematch.
