June Jones, the cutting-edge coach who brought the run-and-shoot offense to Hawaii and led the Rainbow Warriors to their greatest era and an undefeated regular season that catapulted them all the way to the Sugar Bowl, died on Thursday. He was 73.
Hawaii's football program in a statement did not list a cause of death for Jones, who coached the Atlanta Falcons for three seasons in the 1990s before his stint at Hawaii. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser cited a close family friend as saying Jones had entered hospice two weeks ago in his native Oregon.
"Coach Jones was a father figure, a mentor, and a visionary who revolutionized the game," said Timmy Chang, the current Hawaii coach who set the NCAA record for career passing yards (since broken) under Jones. Earlier this year, the House passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent throughout the U.S., with few exceptions. It’s been held up in the Senate since July but, now that the chamber has returned from recess, there’s a chance the legislation could be picked up.
If it can pass the Senate, the bill seems to stand a fair chance of becoming law, with President Trump already expressing support.
For more than a dozen states, this is the closest they’ve been in years to seeing some of their own legislation finally take effect. The U.S. hasn’t been this close to permanent daylight saving time since a version of the Sunshine Protection Act passed in the Senate in 2022 but fizzled in the House.
At present, states are only allowed to opt into year-round permanent standard time, as Hawaii and much of Arizona have done. But that hasn’t stopped 19 states from enacting legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent in their jurisdiction, pending approval from Congress.

Shares of Monaco-based Scorpio climbed above the 87.39 buy point from an 18-week pattern. The buy zone goes to 91.76. It had already climbed above resistance around 81, a level that could have been treated as an early entry.

Estes Express Lines is investing nearly $56 million to expand its cross-border and offshore freight network, including terminals, equipment and capacity serving Canada, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Alex Peebles, senior director of offshore and international at Estes, said the privately held, family-owned carrier is taking a longer view of the freight market rather than allowing current conditions to dictate its investment strategy.

COLUMBIA FALLS, Montana, Sept 16 (Reuters) - More than 15 years after the U.S. Supreme Court reshaped American politics with its Citizens United campaign finance ruling, Montana voters will decide this November whether to make their state the first in the nation to bar corporations from spending money on elections through a ballot initiative.
It's a test case for a novel legal strategy that sidesteps the 2010 ruling rather than challenging it head-on -- and taps into growing, bipartisan anger over the pervasiveness of so-called dark money in elections.
"Americans are losing the belief that they have any influence over our politics," said Tom Moore, a lawyer with the Center for American Progress left-leaning think tank in Washington and the legal architect of the movement.
With similar, coordinated efforts underway in over 30 states, Montana could help set a critical precedent, experts say, and potentially lead to another showdown at the Supreme Court. Hawaii's legislature passed a similar law earlier this year, inspired by those behind the effort here.

Major indexes climbed Friday afternoon, holding to early momentum as investors took in stride inflation data showing consumers continued to pay higher prices for goods and services in August. Among movers rounding off the holiday-shortened week, shipping and logistics provider Matson (MATX) broke out.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.1%, or about 590 points, as the S&P 500 moved up 1.1%. Ten of the index's 11 sectors moved higher. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite tacked on 1.2%, and the Russell 2000 small-cap index picked up 0.7%.
Stocks found some relief from a nearly 3% slide in West Texas Intermediate crude futures to just below $100 a barrel. The 10-year Treasury yield was steady at a 52-week high of 4.95%. Bitcoin rose to roughly $77,700.

Ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season, the Warriors have revealed some new threads. Golden State is one of eight teams to receive new "Specter" jerseys from Nike. The Warriors' edition is prominently black with blue stripes on the right side and yellow number outlines. The seven other teams to receive "Specter" jerseys are the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. After watching his team win the Outrigger Invitational last weekend, Hawaii women's volleyball coach Joshua Walker pointed to the mental aspect of the game more than the physical.
"We have a smart team," Walker said. "All these teams we played this past weekend were very different styles. Our ability to adapt quickly, learn quickly and be able to execute was very impressive."
The Rainbow Wahine improved to 4-2 for the season without their leading hitter, Cha'lei Reid, who averaged 3.00 kills in her first three matches before being sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Senior outside hitter Panna Ratkai, who competes with Reid for playing time when Reid is in on the left side, stepped up in her absence.
She averaged 4.00 kills per set among her 52 in the tournament and was named the Old Trapper Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

HONOLULU (AP) — Jai'den Thomas rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown, Jackson Arnold rushed for 89 yards and two scores along with 116 passing yards, and UNLV weathered Hawaii's attempted comeback in a 21-6 victory on Saturday night.
UNLV, which received four points in the AP Top 25 Poll, captured their fourth straight Island Showdown trophy. Hawaii and UNLV have met in 18 straight seasons, the longest active streak against any team for the Rainbow Warriors.
The Rebels (1-1) outgained Hawaii (0-2) 364-294 and did not give up a touchdown.
Arnold ran for two short touchdowns of 2 and 7 yards in the first half to give UNLV a 14-3 cushion at the break. The second half, however, was almost all Hawaii until near the end of the fourth.
Hawaii outgained UNLV 185-147 in the second half, but only mustered three more points. They saw their fourth-quarter drives end with a turnover on downs, a punt and a game-sealing interception.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have developed their team over the decades via the usual ways most teams in the NBA have, finding special success through the NBA draft since their founding as the Seattle SuperSonics. Many of the franchise's top players have joined the team either through direct selections in the annual draft or via trades executed on that day.

Yes, there is such a thing as a good 5-5 start – at least for now, considering how insane it is to try figuring out all these teams with mostly new players.
What's so good about it? Going 3-2 yesterday was fine, and over the first two runs, one loss was that horrific Hawaii beat against Stanford, another came in the final seconds of Illinois-UAB, and then there's the whopper – thinking Rutgers would destroy UMass. Historically shocking whiff, cap tipped, moving on.
There aren't many options for the Friday games, but let's force down an appetizer before the smorgasbord on Saturday.

All but one player saw the court during the season-opening Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic last week in which Hawaii went 1-2 to open the Walker era.
Nine of the 15 players on the roster played in at least 10 of the opening 12 sets in which UH defeated Georgia Southern and took then-No. 21 Baylor to five before getting swept by San Diego on Sunday.
Senior Tali Hakas was one of six players to play in all 12 sets. She did not start in Sunday's loss to the Toreros but was summoned off the bench quickly when the Rainbow Wahine got off to a poor start.

Highlands Ranch (Colo.) Valor Christian 2028 quarterback ****** us Huard has a handful of game-day visits set with a few more in the works.
In fact, he already took one of those visits, to Stanford, for the Cardinal season opener, and debut of head coach Tavita Pritchard, where Stanford knocked off Hawaii.
"The Stanford visit was awesome," said Huard. "I really enjoyed talking to all the coaches and it was fun to see a game."
The Cardinal did a tremendous job emphasizing the whole aspect of the school.
"Obviously the campus was beautiful and the opportunities that Stanford gives you as far as your future after football are second to none," said Huard.

The singer posted posted a series of photos with a woman he started dating last month to his 28.5K followers on Instagram.

We're almost there, Miami football fans. The Hurricanes take the field for the first time in the 2026 season this weekend, granted on a weird day for college football on the West Coast against ACC opponent Stanford.
That combination of words isn't as wild as last year's run through the College Football Playoff and all the way to the national championship game. Now Mario Cristobal is ready to secure the program's sixth ****** le with quarterback Darian Mensah and jack-of-all-trades receiver Malachi Toney as his big stars. Accordingly, we've uncovered several CFF-relevant data points that can help any managers who still haven't drafted, as well as provide valuable waiver wire options for those who have. Here is what we learned in a College Fantasy Football context from this weekend's games.

Stanford RB Micah Ford delivered a promising performance against Timmy Chang's run n' shoot Hawaii, converting 25 carries into 99 yards and three touchdowns for a weekend-leading 28.5 half-PPR fantasy points in the Cardinal's 37-27 victory. The workload was especially encouraging, as Ford accounted for 25 of Stanford's 37 rushing attempts while punching in all three of the Cardinal's rushing touchdowns. Most importantly for CFF purposes, Ford repeatedly received the call near the goal line, scoring three times from two yards out, including the go-ahead touchdown with 1:41 remaining.
If Stanford continues to ply Ford with 68% of their rushing attempts while sprinkling three targets per game, he is going to be CFF relevant regardless of what happens to Stanford when they are playing superior P4 programs. However, Hawaii is Stanford's second-easiest opponent from a CFF perspective, outside of FCS Elon, so Ford just burned what could be his best fantasy performance of the year on Week 0. The Cardinal face ACC juggernaut Miami this week, followed by a bye and also have the unfortunate distinction of facing Notre Dame as their other non-conference opponent. One of the strangest scheduling anomalies in all of sports is about to have its swan song this weekend in college football's befuddling and charming Week 0.
The fact that a Week 0 even exists is quintessential college football in that it couldn't really exist anywhere else and make any sense at all. However, it has been alive for years, allowing a select handful of teams an opportunity to begin the regular season a week before everybody else. The weekend is open to anyone playing an international game (TCU-UNC in Dublin, Ireland) and anyone playing an away game at Hawaii to compensate for their extra travel. The NCAA can also provide a waiver for games, although that is rare. This season, it was given to NC State and Virginia as they were originally scheduled to play their season opener in Brazil before it was moved back stateside.
However, 2026 will be the last year that the sport enjoys an appetizer before the regular season truly kicks off in full. The FBS Oversight Committee approved legislation on Friday that will move the calendar up one week so that all teams begin during the week that has served as Week 0.
"Earlier this year, the FBS Calendar Subgroup presented recommendations to the committee to amend the regular season and the off-campus recruiting model," the NCAA briefing said. "In response to those recommendations, a new FBS first-contest date has been adopted and will take effect in the 2027 season. The season will begin on the Thursday of what is now designated Week 0 and end on the Saturday after Thanksgiving."
This year's Week 0 consists of eight games. And while none of them are true barnburners, it's a nice, gentle way to start the regular season. And with American fans starved for any kind of football that matters, we will gladly sit down and watch New Mexico State travel to Florida State in primetime.

However, 2026 will be the last year that the sport enjoys an appetizer before the regular season truly kicks off in full. The FBS Oversight Committee approved legislation on Friday that will move the calendar up one week so that all teams begin during the week that has served as Week 0.
"Earlier this year, the FBS Calendar Subgroup presented recommendations to the committee to amend the regular season and the off-campus recruiting model," the NCAA briefing said. "In response to those recommendations, a new FBS first-contest date has been adopted and will take effect in the 2027 season. The season will begin on the Thursday of what is now designated Week 0 and end on the Saturday after Thanksgiving."
This year's Week 0 consists of eight games. And while none of them are true barnburners, it's a nice, gentle way to start the regular season. And with American fans starved for any kind of football that matters, we will gladly sit down and watch New Mexico State travel to Florida State in primetime.

The previous Rainbow Wahine volleyball coaching staff knew exactly what they had with incoming freshman hitter Cha'lei Reid.
A terminator of the volleyball on either side, the Kahuku High alumna gave Hawaii an immediate offensive threat who could compete against anybody right out of the gate.
The rest of her game would eventually come around, but for at least the beginning of her college career, the plan was to keep things simple, be patient, and let Reid slowly get used to the rigors of Division I volleyball.
Ten matches into the season, that patience went right out the door. The team lost its two most experienced hitters — Tali Hakas and Stella Adeyemi — to injury, leaving Reid to carry most of the offensive load.
She never once complained in the public eye. Entering Year 2, where she will likely have much more help on the outside, the experience has only made her stronger.
