Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil sued Columbia University on Monday, alleging it failed to address harassment against him and other members of a pro-Palestinian campus group and retaliated against them when they reported it.
The university's "deliberate indifference" led to the doxing of multiple group members and Khalil's detention by immigration agents, according to the civil rights lawsuit filed in federal court in New York City.
At a news conference announcing the lawsuit, Khalil accused the university of "discrimination aimed at intimidating Palestinian students."
"We are suing because no student, regardless of their background, should go through the **** that Columbia put us through over all these years," he said.
The university declined to comment on the lawsuit, but said in an email that "creating a campus environment where every member of our community feels welcome, supported, and safe is fundamental to who we are as a University."

KYRENIA, Cyprus, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Ayten Bicer felt her 12-year-old daughter slip from her hands and disappear as a ferry capsized off northern Cyprus on Sunday, killing at least eight people.
Her daughter Miray, and 6-year-old son Mehmet Asaf, ‌were among 20 people still missing on Monday as search teams looked for survivors in waters more than 500 metres (1,640 feet) ‌deep.
"She was saying, 'Don't let go'. And I didn't let go of my daughter. I swear, I didn't let her go," Ayten Bicer sobbed.
A suitcase fell on top of her, forcing the girl from her grasp. The mother caught hold of the daughter's foot, but her shoes, coated in engine oil from the overturned vessel, slipped through her hands.

Aug 7 (Reuters) - Chinese startup Moonshot's flagship AI model, Kimi K3, escaped a cybersecurity testing ‌environment developed by the UK AI Safety ‌Institute, research firm Frontier Security said on Thursday, raising concerns over the cybersecurity risks posed by advanced AI systems.
AI models are typically run in isolated "sandboxes" during cybersecurity tests to block access to external information and ***** s their ‌ability to solve ⁠problems independently.
Kimi K3 bypassed one such sandbox, allowing it to access information beyond ⁠the test environment, U.S.-based cybersecurity research firm Frontier Security said.
The researchers warned that if one "high-reasoning model" discovers such a shortcut, other models with similar access could likely ‌do the same.
As Kimi K3 is a publicly available model, the researchers cautioned that it could be used by "adversarial actors," making the incident potentially more harmful.

While Tropical Storm Bertha continues to spin in the Gulf, Hurricane Fausto is churning up rough seas in the Pacific, and could impact Hawaii next week, forecasters said.
Although the center of the 80-mph hurricane is more than 1,000 miles from the U.S. West Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center, "swells generated by Fausto are affecting portions of the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula and the coast of southern California."
"These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," the hurricane center said.
The National Weather Service office in San Diego warned of "elevated surf" and "strong currents" for beachgoers there from Thursday through Sunday.
Next week, the weather across Hawaii "will depend on the eventual track and intensity of Tropical Cyclone Fausto," the weather service office in Honolulu said.
