MADRID (AP) — Leeds hammered woeful Newcastle 4-1 to go third in the Premier League on Monday while Real Betis won 2-1 at Villarreal to move equal on points with second-place Real Madrid in La Liga.
The top two in Italy, Roma and Inter Milan, won comfortably to maintain their 100 per cent records and Como beat Parma 2-1 to climb into third spot.
Betis' fairy tale start to the Spanish season continued with victory over Villarreal.
The win, courtesy of goals from Cucho Hernández and Natan, came 10 days after it beat Real Madrid 1-0 in La Liga, and less than a week after it overcame Lille 3-2 in its first Champions League group match since 2005.
The result at Estadio de la Ceramica lifts Betis into second place, tied with Madrid on 12 points. Barcelona is top on 15.

While the transfer window may be shut, Ajax are not quite done yet in reinforcing the squad. According to De Telegraaf, Ajax are just one of a number of sides keen on signing now former Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma. The 30-year-old is a free agent, having left Tottenham this summer. Other sides from top five leagues are interested in the former Tottenham man, so it is by no means guaranteed that Ajax will land the Malian international.
Yet Ajax have shown an ability to pull in some big named players this summer. Julian Brandt left Borussia Dortmund for Ajax during the recent transfer window and is already proving to be a good signing for the Dutch side.

Manchester City completed its $440-million midfield rebuild on Tuesday by signing Argentina international Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea in a deal worth 125 million pounds ($169 million), a fee that ties the British transfer record.

Fernandez-Pardo flew into Tyneside on Monday night to have a medical and sign a long-term contract.
The 21-year-old said he was "very proud to be at such a big club" following talks with head coach Matthias Jaissle.

For the second straight summer, Juventus and Atlético Madrid have agreed to a loan deal involving a player who had a bit of a struggle during his first season in Turin with the hope that Spain cures some of those previous ills.
Last summer it was Nico Gonzalez, who is now back in Turin and looks set to stay after scoring the game-winning goal against Parma over the weekend. This summer, it's Canadian striker Jonathan David, whose first season in Turin could be described as quite the difficult one with not very many goals scored.
According to multiple reports out of Italy and Spain on Monday, Juventus at Atlético Madrid have agreed to a season-long loan deal for David. It ends a 12-month period in Turin in which David's struggles were vastly superior to good moments he showed under Igor Tudor and then especially Luciano Spalletti. David, who arrived on a free transfer from Lille and was subsequently handed a contract by former sporting chief Damien Comolli that made him one of the highest earners on the team, will now head to Atléti in hopes of following the same kind of path that Gonzalez did during the 2025-26 season. But as we found out with Nico, it doesn't necessarily equate to Atlético Madrid actually activating the buy option that they will have in the deal.
Said buy option is around €25 million, according to Fabrizio Romano. There are apparently no set clauses worked into the deal — it is very much a loan with option to buy situation.
The move to La Liga is the chance for David to get his career back on track after his performances with Juventus resulted in the lowest goal tally of his career, scoring just six goals in 35 appearances in Serie A last season. Once he got in a funk, it was tough for him to get out of it, and it was reflected in how his minutes suffered as a result as the season went on under Spalletti.

This Friday (28), he attended Lille vs. PSG at Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, for the second round of the French League, accompanied by ****** istant coach Paul Clement. Both watched the 2-2 draw, in Davide Ancelotti's official home debut in charge of the host team.
The Brazil National Team coach will also watch two Premier League matches in London. This Saturday he will be at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the clash between the home side and Newcastle. Tomorrow (30), Ancelotti will watch Chelsea vs. Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City faces Crystal Palace on Friday in both teams' second match of the new Premier League season, with City hoping to build on its last-gasp win in the opener after finishing runner-up last year.
Defenders Marc Guéhi and Joško Gvardiol scored in the 84th and 91st minutes to earn the full three points for Manchester City against Bournemouth in Enzo Maresca's first competitive match since taking over as manager from the departed Pep Guardiola.
Maresca told reporters a day before Friday's game at Selhurst Park in London that new signing Ayyoub Bouaddi is settling in with the team but City will be careful with the 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder signed from Lille.

Lazio are facing an uphill challenge in their quest to sign Juventus winger Edon Zhegrova, as Matteo Cancellieri has reportedly rejected his most keen admirers.

Bayern Munich's Champions League league phase opponents were revealed in Thursday's draw — and players and fans alike are reacting positively. It is an entertaining slate of games in store, from a chance for payback against **** nal as well as a matchup against last season's darlings from Norway, Bodø/Glimt.
Bayern forward Serge Gnabry broke down the draw and singled out one of the two LaLiga teams in the lineup as one he was personally anticipating.

Manchester City signed highly rated teenage midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille on Wednesday, getting a rising star seen as the Premier League giant's long-term replacement for Rodri.
City confirmed the transfer in a statement on its website, saying the 18-year-old Morocco international has signed a five-year-contract. No financial details were given but French sports daily L'Equipe estimated the transfer to be 100 million euros ($117 million).
Bouaddi's arrival follows the departure of 2024 men's Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, who recently joined Barcelona after helping Spain win the World Cup.
"This is a very special day for me and my family," Bouaddi said. "I've watched City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always try and play quality football. And they have shown they are winners, this club feels like it's built to win."
The fee makes Bouaddi the most expense player sold from the French league, surpassing the 90 million euros Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal paid to get Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023.
