Leeds United fans of a certain vintage might bristle at Ao Tanaka's choice of adjective for Bournemouth, but current reality backs him up.
The ****** an international was asked this week about Saturday's game against the Cherries and described both it and the opponent as 'massive.'
The word massive is an emotive one in football. Some fanbases use it sincerely with whole-hearted belief that it applies to their club. Others use it slightly more ironically. Even when it is reasonably applied, the word means different things to different people. Some might take into consideration a club's global presence, stadium size, average attendance or historical success. Others, like Tanaka, look not at Bournemouth's circa 12k capacity ground or historic honours board, but progression up the Premier League table over the last three years, last season's top-six finish and back-to-back-to-back 3-0 wins over AC Milan, Manchester United and Aston Villa.
"This is a massive opponent," said Tanaka. "This is a massive challenge. Bournemouth is such a good team, especially recently, the results have been so good. And it's a massive game for us as well, because we didn't win four games. So we want to win the game. So this is a massive game, massive opponent. [They are] a bit different than last season, because they changed the manager. But still, they have a quality players, quality tactics. So I'm looking forward to playing against them."
Unlike Bournemouth, Leeds cannot boast of nine seasons at Premier League level in the last 11 years but by any other metric can be considered a massive club. Three historic top flight ****** les, an FA Cup, European success, a soon-to-be 53k capacity stadium and a fanbase to fill it are all significant pieces of evidence. Daniel Farke often cautions that the club must learn to walk again in the Premier League before it can run, yet seventh place after eight games can be cautiously described as a step forward from last season.

Michael Carrick has insisted he is "not surprised" to remain in the Manchester United dugout despite the club enduring their most disastrous start to a league season in four decades. The former England international saw his position come under intense scrutiny this week following a dismal 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Bournemouth.
Carrick looked certain to face the axe following Sunday's humiliating loss against the Cherries. That result extended an abysmal winless streak to eight matches in all competition, cementing the club's worst start to a league campaign in 40 years.
However, crisis talks were held on Monday between the 45-year-old and the United hierarchy. Despite widespread anticipation of a managerial change, the boardroom ultimately opted to keep him at the helm.
This backing comes just months after Carrick penned a new permanent two-year deal in the summer. He had earned the permanent role by securing Champions League football, having originally taken over as a short-term successor to Ruben Amorim in January.
When pressed on his survival, the former midfielder maintained a defiant stance. He insisted his sole focus remains on rectifying the current crisis on the pitch rather than fearing for his job.

Jordan Henderson says it is an "absolute privilege and honour" to be playing in this Chelsea team, after the midfielder helped the Blues record back-to-back wins for the first time since his arrival.
Henderson's introduction to Chelsea supporters was delayed by an arm injury he picked up with England at the FIFA World Cup in the summer. He has made up for lost time since returning, marking his home debut with two goals and an ****** ist in the 5-1 win over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, with his first goal arriving with just one minute on the clock.
He followed that up on Saturday as Chelsea beat previously unbeaten Everton 2-0. Pedro Neto scored both goals, handing Everton their first defeat of 2026/27Premier League season, giving Chelsea a first-ever win at the Hill ****** inson Stadium and lifting them to fourth in the Premier League, the club reported.
Henderson was a surprise signing at Chelsea in the summer, with the veteran arriving from Brentford on a free transfer.
The 36-year-old has added vital experience to the Chelsea dressing room, and says he is relishing a leadership role in a talented group.

Bournemouth vs Sunderland was played on Sunday afternoon, just a few short days after they had both won in the Europa League.
Both teams went into this game desperate for a league win that would take them out of the bottom three, and when the game began, it appeared that only one team wanted the points. Sunderland hit the self-destruct ******* on, conceded early on, and then had a player sent off in the 17th minute.
The game ended 2-0 to Bournemouth; however, it could have been more. Here is what has been said since the final whistle from the managers, players, pundits, and the fans.
Regis Le Bris – Credit IMAGO / Pro Sports Images
Sunderland's head coach said: "We were below the level today. It is hard to take – it is really painful. We were not Sunderland today and that is not acceptable.
"I am disappointed for our fans because they were with us until the end, but we were not there on the pitch, which is a big problem in the Premier League."

Alex Scott has been one of Liverpool's main targets ever since Andoni Iraola was brought in.
The Spaniard managed to turn despite him only being 23 years old.
Scott knows Iraola's system like the back of his hand and, during their time together at Bournemouth, the two often spoke highly of one another.
At the moment, one of Liverpool's main issues is their midfield so, if Iraola can bring someone in who already knows his system, it would make things much easier.
That's why, of all the recent midfielders linked with an Anfield switch, Scott has been the most talked-about.

Nordi Mukiele didn't mince his words after Sunderland's defeat at Bournemouth – and perhaps that's exactly what was needed.
"I don't know. Maybe because we became arrogant, this is what I think," he said. "It's just the beginning, football is like this. You can accept and just stand up and go back to work."
He went further, questioning whether enough was being done on the training ground and admitting that, against Bournemouth, Sunderland didn't look like a team desperate to win.
"Maybe we became arrogant."
"We struggle everywhere."

The Bees created a great chance following a flowing move in the second minute with Enrique Roca releasing Madden down the left. His cross found the opposite winger, Dwayne Mason, at the back post but he missed the target under pressure and on the stretch.
Kasujja then did well to fashion himself a sight at goal after a clever touch in the box allowed him to get a deflected strike off that Adam Brogan held on to at the second attempt.
Gary McDermott's side were much the brighter of the two in the opening ten, this time Jai Bansoodeb feinted past two Cherries defenders before forcing Brogan to save with his feet from a driven effort.
Tom Stuckey had Bournemouth's first sight at goal as they grew into the game, nodding wide from a floated free-kick when he could have headed back across goal to those waiting in red and black.
Then, on 17 minutes, the home side took the lead with skipper Waite striking across Felix Lyon into the bottom right corner.

A fourth nine-figure signing? One club has slapped enormous valuations on their players - and that will hit Liverpool.
Liverpool have spent unprecedented amounts of cash in the last two summers. They've gone from zero nine-figure signings to three a little over a year, completely reshaping their attack with elite talent.
Now, it should be said that the transfers haven't quite delivered yet. Liverpool took a giant step backwards last season and are trying to get back on track in this campaign under Andoni Iraola.
And we should stress that the squad building process is not done. Richard Hughes has left behind a very imbalanced squad, one which lacks a right-winger as well as midfield depth.
The Reds must re-enter the market in 2027 to correct things, then, and they've naturally had a look at three players from Iraola's former club, Bournemouth. However, none of those players are coming cheap.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, journalist Pete O'Rourke claimed that Liverpool are keen on recruiting Bournemouth winger Rayan. O'Rourke said,
"There's obvious links between Rayan and the Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola.
"Iraola was at Bournemouth when they signed him, and obviously he made a massive impact there, he got seven goal contributions in 15 games which is pretty good going.
"Obviously, links with Liverpool are pretty easy to come up with in that respect because of who the manager is.
"Iraola is a big fan of his, having worked with him before, so of course it is a possibility and Liverpool will be keeping a close eye on his performances for Bournemouth this season.

Bournemouth forward Daniel Jebbison says he is "ready" to make an impact whenever he is given the nod by Marco Rose this season.
Jebbison has completed two loan spells at Championship outfits Watford and Preston North End in recent seasons and is hopeful those experiences will now help him "establish" himself with the Cherries.
"I'm ready and I'm patient," Jebbison said. "I'll get my chance and every minute I get, every second or whatever, I'll work my hardest so that's what I'm trying to do, just take it day-by-day.
"I sometimes forget I'm only 23, and I just feel in my body that I can help the team this season. I've had my experience now and I'm here and ready to try and establish myself here.
"I just need to be good at what I do. Obviously there's competition, I love competition, it's OK and that will only help me thrive and hopefully it thrives the other boys too."

Newcastle United travel to Millwall in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday, looking to book a place in the last 16 as they continue an unbeaten start to life under Matthias Jaissle.
A place at The Den is never straightforward for visiting Premier League sides, and the German head coach has already been warned about the hostile reception awaiting his side in Bermondsey.
Jaissle's side head into the tie sitting seventh in the Premier League after four games without defeat, though a place in the fourth round would offer a first taste of cup progress under the new head coach following last month's win over West Bromwich Albion. With a decent gap before Newcastle's next league fixture, Jaissle has options over how far he rotates his side.
Newcastle will be without Dan Burn, Joelinton and Will Osula for the trip to south-east London. Ewen Jaouen is a doubt in goal after rolling his ankle in training on 4 September, with Jaissle saying a decision on his availability will not be made until closer to kick-off. Tino Livramento, who made his first appearance since April off the bench against Bournemouth, is also not yet ready to start; asked directly if he'd be ready, Jaissle replied simply, "No."
Deadline-day arrival Matias Fernandez-Pardo is in line for his first start for the club after joining from Lille. Jacob Murphy, Jacob Ramsey, Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba and Fabian Schär are among those pushing for involvement having had limited game time so far this season, while Sean Steur is likely to return to the side after a positive cameo against Bournemouth. Jaissle said of his selection: "There's always a fine line to make these decisions."

Chelsea are working on an early deal to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott in a bid to avoid competition for the midfielder next summer.
Bournemouth turned down a £64m offer from Chelsea during the summer transfer window and made clear that any further approaches would be rejected. The Cherries had hoped to tie Scott down to a new deal, but talks so far have failed to find an agreement.
Chelsea are keen to capitalise and want to secure Scott's future ahead of next summer. TEAMtalk are reporting that the Blues are exploring whether a transfer could be agreed in advance of next summer, to avoid a bidding war with Premier League rivals. Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester United have all tracked Scott's progress at the Vitality Stadium.
Scott has emerged as one of the most promising midfielders in the Premier League at Bournemouth and is expected to make his England debut in the coming months, having trained with Thomas Tuchel's squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Chelsea are prepared to bide their time and wait for Scott next summer. Xabi Alonso has identified the midfielder as a primary target, as Chelsea look to replace Enzo Fernandez.

It's a full weekend of USMNT soccer including several possibilities for head-to-head matchups. We have players still looking to make their season debut as well as some who are needing to reestablish themselves after staying put despite indications that they would, or should, be moving elsewhere. There is quite a bit on, so here we go:
Olympique Lyon v Auxerre — 1:00p ET: Tanner Tessmann did not appear last weekend for Lyon as the team settled for a 1-1 draw with Le Havre. Tessmann had played midweek for the team in their Champions League qualification match so perhaps it was just rotation as players look to gain their mid-season form.
PSG v Monaco — 3:05p on beIN Sports: After a wild transfer saga back and forth Folarin Balogun remains at Monaco, at least until January. However, he was not included in Friday's matchday squad and apparently was left off the team's Conference League roster as well so it looks as though he has work to do to gain back a position at the club.
NYCFC v Nashville SC — 7:30p on Apple TV: Matt Freese and NYCFC look to snap a five match winless streak on Friday night but they'll have to do it against league leading Nashville who have won four straight and have a nine point lead in the Supporters Shield standings.
Newcastle v Bournemouth — 7:30a on USA Network/Peacock: For the second straight week Tyler Adams came off the bench and Bournemouth conceded a late goal to drop points as Everton scored in stoppage time to draw level. Bournemouth will travel to Newcastle this weekend in search of their first win of the season as they face a Newcastle side coming off a 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Stenhousemuir manager Marvin Bartley has not spoken to Livingston sporting director David Martindale since resigning from the West Lothian club at the end of last season.

Back in May, Bartley and ***** istant Neil Hastings said they "had no option but to resign" after being asked to reapply for their positions with Livi.
The former Hibernian, Livingston and Bournemouth midfielder took charge at Almondvale in January, stepping up from a backroom role once Martindale moved into a new position.
"No, I've not seen or spoken to Davie since leaving the football club," said Bartley.

Bournemouth boss Marco Rose will have to juggle his playing resources carefully when the Cherries embark upon their first season in Europe, starting at Real Sociedad on 17 September.
Uefa's deadline for clubs to submit squads for the league phase of the Europa League was midnight on Wednesday, with Europe's governing body revealing each club's squads on Thursday evening.
Because of the strict rules governing "club-trained" and "association-trained" players, the Cherries have only been able to register 21 first-team players in "List A" rather than 25.
And that has meant that several senior squad members - Julian Araujo, Ben Gannon-Doak, Fraser Forster, Juanlu Sanchez, Max Aarons, Daniel Jebbison and Veljko Milosavljevic - must sit out in Europe for now.
Eli Junior Kroupi and Amine Adli, currently sidelined with injury, are included so can feature in the league phase when fit.

What had initially promised to be a busy final couple of days for Liverpool during the summer transfer window ultimately fizzled out into nothing. The Reds managed to confirm a deal for Bradley Barcola after weeks of negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain.
That deal always felt like it was a matter of when and not if though.
The expectation was that there would be more business done. Andoni Iraola confirmed as much in the build-up to the season opener against Newcastle United.
"We will definitely sign some players. Some deals you have to wait until the end. But the end is the important picture, the one we will have on September 1. Because it is true that we are still quite thin."
The reinforcements, however, did not arrive and the former Bournemouth boss now has to get the best out of an incomplete and unbalanced squad. It is an unenviable situation to be in. But it is one Iraola is going to have to manage, at least until January anyway.

Alex Scott is poised to become next summer's most coveted ****** et — after AFC Bournemouth blocked his exit during this transfer window.
Chelsea made a last-ditch attempt to secure the Bournemouth midfielder, having already seen a £64 million ($86.7 million) offer rejected earlier in the summer.
The Blues identified the 23-year-old Scott as their top priority to fill the void left by Enzo Fernandez, but Bournemouth stood firm in their resolve not to part with any of their prized players, as per The Mirror.

The Premier League weekend was not short of talking points and discussion.
Newcastle's new manager has made an immediate impact despite difficulties off the pitch, whileArsenal have already shown that the champions will take some stopping. Here are five of the biggest questions and themes to emerge from weekend's Premier League action.
Rayan Cherki's stock took a slight hit during the summer. There were reports of tension and frustration within the France squad during the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to his limited playing time, while an Amazon documentary revealed how Manchester City's team had gambled on the Frenchman despite negative feedback on his mentality.
City took that gamble and have been repaid ever since. Cherki was superb last season, recording 12 **** ists in the Premier League, and has started the new season on fire. He **** isted twice in the opening win over Bournemouth, and scored twice himself as Crystal Palace were put to the sword on Friday night.
The 23-year-old is a special talent and capable of unlocking any game. Maresca must coax that from him on a regular basis and give him the platform to become Kevin De Bruyne's heir.

As we head into the final day of the transfer window, the Enzo Fernández situation remains unresolved. It's only been going on for the whole summer, after all (if not longer), so there's been hardly any time to get it done, right?
Our (former?) Vice-captain has been training with the team, but he's been held out of our first three games, either at his own request or by the coach's decision or by the sporting directors', or by a combination of all. Chelsea tried to set a deadline before the start of the season for Manchester City (or any other team) to bid, but all that's done is make it even more frustrating that we're still in limbo. That deadline was then retconned to be a deadline for "bids of (at least) £120m", which just means that we now have to talk about a fee as well.
But, at long last, we are actually talking, club-to-club through official channels, as per all the usual talking heads at the transfer rumor mill content farm, like Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, and all the rest.
Whether these talks will lead to anything here on the final day is anyone's guess. Romano is just playing up the drama as usual, but Ornstein, speaking on BBC Sport, claims that Chelsea would only really consider doing business if we could somehow come out ahead not just in the books but on the pitch as well. And that would mean getting someone in to replace Enzo in some way, shape, or form. But links with Lamine Camara of AS Monaco, Manu Koné of AS Roma, and Alex Scott of AFC Bournemouth have all led to the same narrative dead end, and now there's hardly any time left.
Forcing players to stay is never a good idea, but sometimes it's not the worst thing.

Everton are actively exploring a deal to bring Jack Grealish back to Merseyside, with discussions under way with Manchester City over another loan move, according to The Athletic. It is a development that fits into a wider and increasingly busy summer for David Moyes, as the club continue shaping their squad for the new campaign at Hill ****** inson Stadium.
Grealish spent last season on loan at Everton and, despite a campaign disrupted by the foot injury he suffered in January, there has remained an appetite inside the club to revisit the arrangement. The 30-year-old managed 22 appearances in all competitions, contributing two goals and six ****** ists before the stress fracture halted his momentum. That output only tells part of the story, with Everton valuing his ability to carry the ball, draw pressure and bring control in advanced areas.
The timing is notable. Everton's wide options are in flux, and several moving parts around the market appear to be influencing this conversation. Earlier in the window, City held interest in Iliman Ndiaye, while Everton were keen on a structure that could have aided Grealish's return. Since then, the picture has shifted, with Tottenham now moving towards Ndiaye and City focusing attention elsewhere in the attacking market.
That leaves Everton pressing on with a route that may still be achievable if the financial terms are workable. Grealish has featured only briefly since returning to City, appearing from the bench in the Community Shield defeat to ****** nal and the Premier League win over Bournemouth, before then being left out of the squad entirely for the victory at Crystal Palace. Read in context, that tends to suggest his place in Pep Guardiola's plans remains uncertain.
There is broader context here too. City have already sanctioned major changes in their squad, and movement in attacking positions has been substantial. Everton, meanwhile, are not standing still. A deal in principle has been reached for Richarlison to return, while the club have also looked into Fulham right-back Kenny Tete as they continue to ****** s solutions in defence.

I felt as though I was watching Alex Scott take his game to yet another level in Bournemouth's 1-1 draw with Everton.
The technical excellence has always been there, but now he is beginning to dictate games.
Scott uses his body so well, and demands the ball even in tight areas of the pitch. It's his awareness that is making him stand out right now and we haven't even delved into his extensive passing range, or indeed his superbly taken goal against Everton.
Scott has recently turned 23. In midfielder terms, he's entered into the golden years, where quality, fitness, and experience begin to intertwine to great effect.
He's clearly got his admirers. Chelsea have courted Scott extensively in recent weeks. We'll see in the days ahead if they're genuinely willing to test Bournemouth's hard-nosed stance towards selling him.
