The U.S. Senate candidates in Texas could hardly be more different: James Talarico, a former seminarian turned Democratic state lawmaker who speaks in calm cadences about love and empathy, and Ken Paxton, the pugnacious Republican state attorney general who speaks about a refusal to compromise.
They share an enemy, though. They dislike social media's effects on children's mental health. Talarico, who did not respond to a request for comment, has endorsed a social media ban for kids under 16, while denouncing "predatory algorithms that divide us on an hourly, daily basis." As a legislator, he co-authored a bill targeting explicit deepfakes — digital imitations of individuals that are often made or manipulated by artificial intelligence and used for harassment on social media.
Paxton has been suing Big Tech, alleging the companies hook youth on their apps or don't restrict sensitive videos from being viewed by kids. "When elected to the U.S. Senate, he will continue his proven record of advancing policies that protect children online, strengthen parental rights, and hold Big Tech accountable when it breaks the law," Paxton campaign spokesperson Madison Cercy said in a statement to KFF Health News.
Youth mental health is in decline. Even as researchers explore what's causing the problem, momentum is gathering among policymakers from both parties to crack down on social media companies. WASHINGTON (AP) — Tensions are mounting between the Pentagon and Congress over the flow of information to lawmakers about the U.S. military's priorities, with both Democrats and Republicans accusing a Defense Department leader of being frustratingly opaque.
Some senators from both parties say they were left deeply unsettled Thursday after the Pentagon's top policy adviser, Defense Undersecretary Elbridge Colby, failed to provide an expected update on the Trump administration's National Defense Strategy at a classified briefing.
The lawmakers also say they were unsatisfied with Colby's answers to questions ranging from inquiries about the Iran war to growing concerns that President Donald Trump could deploy troops to polling places during November's midterm congressional elections. WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - The head of the U.S. Postal Service has told confidants that he is deeply discouraged by his job and wants to resign, according to four people familiar with his thinking, as the agency comes under scrutiny over financial losses and President Donald Trump's effort to tighten rules on mail-in voting.
Postmaster General David Steiner, who took office in July 2025 after the White House forced out his predecessor, has expressed frustration over a lack of help from the White House and Congress in addressing the mail service's long-running financial woes, the people said.
At the same time, the Postal Service was thrust to the center of a debate over the federal government's role in voting after Trump directed it in March to serve as a clearinghouse for mail ballots. The Supreme Court on Monday blocked the agency from implementing key elements of the plan, dealing the White House a significant setback.

Former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat-turned-independent, said Monday he supports two Republican Senate candidates running in battleground races in November.
During an appearance on CNBC, Manchin expressed support for former Rep. Mike Rogers, who is running for an open seat in Michigan, and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who is seeking reelection. Both races are crucial to whether the GOP will retain control of the Senate.
"You lose the Susan Collinses of the Senate, you're losing the soul of the Senate — basically, a person you can talk to, who wants to do the right thing all of the time," Manchin said, adding that he would campaign with the senator.

From fashion shows to parties, the couple has been spotted looking loved up at various events around the city, often wearing coordinating outfits.
A source recently told PEOPLE that they're enjoying themselves in the months since they were first seen spending time together.
"They've become close pretty quickly," the source said of Holmes, 47, and Yarmosky, 39, some two months after they were first photographed in East Hampton, N.Y., July 10. "Katie feels very comfortable with him. She's having a lot of fun. They really enjoy spending time together and had an amazing summer."
Yarmosky, a New York City-based artist, and Holmes were first seen holding hands when they attended a screening of Olivia Wilde's The Invite back in July. The pair also stepped out for dinner in Manhattan that same week. Democratic state parties announced Monday that they are launching an operation for the midterm elections they're calling the "New Battlefield Project," intended to recruit 10,000 volunteers to guard polling places in case armed federal officers show up.
Activists are planning mass protests if the Trump administration tries to interfere with voting or ballot counting. And legal scholars are distributing white papers advising judges what they should do if the government tries to seize ballots.
The unprecedented efforts are in response to President Donald Trump's equally unprecedented moves to interfere in this year's midterm elections, which include attempts to impose proof-of-citizenship requirements to register to vote and directing the Postal Service to play a central role in deciding which voters should get a mail ballot.

Howard Stern broke his silence months after a mass layoff of his radio show staff.
"I've never had a summer where I was treated so well in the press," Howard, 72, said sarcastically during his Monday, September 14, season premiere of Sirius XM's The Howard Stern Show, The U.S. Sun reported. "It was so positive. I can't believe it. I can't tell you how many different people have called me a scumbag."
As Globe previously reported, the shock jock has faced backlash for reducing his show to just one episode per week and making a lucrative deal to stream it on HBO Max — amid massive staff layoffs.
Some former employees also spoke out, claiming they were told not to speak to him at company parties, telling the U.S. Sun that "people have actually gotten fired for it."

Despite contrasting rumours earlier this afternoon, Karim Benzema doesn't seem to be a particularly hot topic at Bayer Leverkusen.
When asked by BILD, club sporting director Simon Rolfes shut down the rumour, simply stating "our squad is complete."
This story emerged on Monday when DZfoot journalist Ilyes Kaddouri reported that there was contact between the two parties.
Benzema following Leverkusen's instagram page only added further fuel to the fire regarding a move to the Rhineland.
However, with Carles Martinez's squad well stocked in his position, it now looks like it was nothing more than an unreliable rumour.

Approval from the New York State Public Service Commission remains required.
The proposal includes headline base-rate changes of $13 million, $42 million and $39 million over the three rate years. A bill-shaping mechanism would instead implement corresponding base-rate increases of $26.6 million, $27.5 million and $28.5 million, producing an approximately 3.5% total customer-bill effect each year. Any revenue shortfall caused by delayed billing after the proposed November 1 effective date would be collected through a surcharge.
For Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE:ED), the attraction is a visible investment and recovery framework. The trade-off is a 9.5% authorized return on common equity and limited room before earnings sharing begins.
The settlement supports $396 million of steam capital spending over three years, comprising $143 million, $127 million, and $126 million annually.
