MONTREAL (AP) — Chris Kreider agreed to terms on a contract for this season with the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday after mutually terminating his previous deal with the Anaheim Ducks earlier in the week.
Kreider, a Massachusetts native, wanted to get back to the Eastern Conference to be closer to family after playing last year in Southern California following a trade from the New York Rangers. The 35-year-old winger joins a young team that is coming off reaching the East final before losing to eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina.
Kreider has been booed in Montreal since colliding with Carey Price during a playoff series with the Rangers in 2014. Price did not play again that spring because of a resulting knee injury.

Mavericks predicted to cut ties with $54M high-motor veteran rim runner, not Kyrie Irving originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Dallas Mavericks are at an interesting crossroads with their organization right now as they try to figure out the best moves for their future. They have a Rookie of the Year in Cooper Flagg, but the biggest question is about what they are building around him.
Kyrie Irving is set to be the point guard, but his time in Dallas may come to an end as early as this season.
"The Mavericks, as we've been writing since mid-June, have consistently swatted away trade interest this offseason in nine-times-an-All-Star guard Kyrie Irving. Rival teams, however, continue to wonder aloud about how firmly Dallas will stick to that stance once the season begins and the next in-season trade deadline on Feb. 11 gradually approaches. The primary factor fueling that curiosity, of course, is that fact that Irving is 34 and Mavericks star forward Cooper Flagg is 19. Not your average age gap between the team's two best players," The Stein Line's Marc Stein wrote.
While Irving could be on the trade block soon, PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford have also been mentioned. Heavy.com's Sean Deveney believes it will be Gafford that gets traded.

With four points from three games, FC Schalke have made more than just a respectable start to this Bundesliga season.
A large part of that is down to goalkeeper Loris Karius, who delivered a superb performance both in the sensational 0-0 draw against Bayern Munich and in the 3-1 away win over Union Berlin. Schalke fans in particular are therefore calling for him to be nominated for the German national team on social media.
Karius was asked about that in a Sky interview after the Union match. The TV reporter wanted to know whether there had already been any contact with Germany coach Jürgen Klopp and how realistic he considered a call-up to the national team.
"No, there has been no contact," Karius replied. "I see it as neither realistic nor unrealistic. I'm not thinking about it."
Even so, the 33-year-old, who has repeatedly faced heavy criticism over the course of his career, admitted: "If people ***** ociate me with that, it's a huge compliment to my performance."

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa left practice Thursday with an oblique injury.
Tagovailoa bent over in obvious discomfort after throwing a pass during a portion of practice open to media and grabbed his right side. He dropped to the ground for a few seconds before getting up and trying to shake off the injury.
It's unclear if he returned to practice. The Falcons listed him as a limited participant.
Tagovailoa's first game with the Falcons is at Pittsburgh on Sunday. It's the same spot where he made the last start of his rocky final season with Miami.
Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski announced Monday that Tagovailoa will open the season as the starter and Michael Penix Jr. will be inactive. Cooper Rush will be the backup.

An exciting African star is ready to make his move to Liverpool.
The Reds are without a sporting director at the moment after Richard Hughes left the club. But it doesn't mean they are in disarray.
Behind him, Liverpool have a lot of experienced key decision makers when it comes to recruitment. Pedro Marques has done a brilliant job identifying young talent and bringing them to Anfield.
Meanwhile, Julian Ward and David Woodfine have been essential to the club's brilliant recruitment behind the scenes for many years now.
Liverpool may look to promote from within in order to fill Hughes' vacancy or they could look to bring in an external candidate.

USC football shut out Fresno State on Friday night. The Trojans were able to earn a day off and watch college football on Saturday. The game you know the Trojans were watching on Saturday was Oregon versus Boise State. The Ducks got a severe test. Ducks Wire reacted:
"'I'm glad this game was how it was; we've got a lot to learn,' (Dante) Moore said after a career day with 378 yards passing. 'Thank God it wasn't a 40- or 50-point blowout, because this just shows us who we are right now, and what we have to attack coming into next week.'
"If that's what (Dan) Lanning instilled in his guys after a tense, nerve-wracking, and often frustrating season-opener, then I think the Ducks won in more ways than one. Did Oregon look good on Saturday? No, not by their standards. Did they play well? At times, but it was far too inconsistent. Is there a lot to clean up? Yes, undoubtedly. Is everything they're aiming for still out in front of them?
"Coaching a championship contender is hard. You want them to be so dominant that they blow every opponent out of the water, but you also want to keep them motivated and hungry enough to keep working hard. It's like a magic trick, or threading a needle. Lanning has walked that tightrope several times over the years, and he got a bit of an ****** ist on Saturday in Week 1. The Ducks played far below their standards against what we believe is a pretty good Boise State team. They still showed how good they can be, keeping the ceiling high, but left us thinking about how hard they need to work to reach their goals. In the coming weeks, Oregon will undoubtedly tip towards the side of blowouts and bloodbaths. They may eventually fall toward humility down the road, too."
Oregon fell well short of expectations, but it did win a tough game, which could fuel the Ducks' confidence. It will be fascinating to see how the Ducks evolve before they play the Trojans on September 26.

The Tennessee Volunteers have taken the field once again for another football season, and they've got a new pup leading the charge for glory as Smokey XII.

It was through East Tennessee's bluetick ***** hound rescue community that Smokey veterinarian Dr. Zenithson Ng first learned about Neyland, whose "bold, courageous and outgoing personality" immediately stood out upon meeting the young hound in December. The Washington Commanders added plenty of new faces to their roster during the offseason. Many of their additions were to the defensive side of the ball, but there were notable offensive additions to the team, too. Tight end Chig Okonkwo and wide receiver Stefon Diggs lead that charge, but rookie wide receiver Antonio Williams can't be left out either.
The Commanders are excited about their offensive additions, and Pro Football Focus recently named Okonkwo as one of five fantasy football breakout stars in 2026.
After discussing Okonkwo's time with the Tennessee **** ans, reviewing some of his stats, and mentioning that the Commanders invested more in Okonkwo than any skill player outside of Terry McLaurin, the article says:
Expectations for Okonkwo will be higher than they were for (Zach) Ertz at ages 34 and 35. He played 12 of the first 14 snaps in the second preseason game, suggesting he will have a larger role than he did in Tennessee and that Ertz had in Washingotn. Given the uncertainty at wide receiver outside of McLaurin and recent free-agent addition Stefon Diggs, Okonkwo is third on the team in targets. That gives him a solid floor as a low-end TE2.
His ability to turn into a TE1 will largely depend on the quality of the Commanders' offense in general. It's unlikely Okonkwo becomes a frequent target near the goal line, given his lighter size for a tight end, but a few more touchdowns than usual are a possibility.

The Oklahoma Sooners open the 2026 college football season in one more day. You smell that? Smells like opportunity. The Sooners have put together a roster with the potential to make some magic happen this season. The Oklahoma Sooners are one of the most talented teams in the SEC and are considered a dark horse to win the conference this year.
First up for the Sooners are the UTEP Miners, a team that's won just five games total in the last two seasons. On paper, the Sooners are the better team. They're a more experienced team on both sides of the football and are looking to build off of their 10-2 season and College Football Playoff appearance in 2026.
Each week, the staff at Sooners Wire will provide their predictions for each Oklahoma Sooners game. So to kickstart the 2026 season, here are the first Sooners Wire Staff Predictions of the year.
Oklahoma gets the season started off with a blowout win, as UTEP is likely the easiest W on the 2026 schedule. OU will look to pound the rock in this game and give the running backs and offensive line a dose of confidence before the Michigan game. The Sooners will just want to see efficiency and good decisions from John Mateer. On defense, look for the secondary to have a big day and try to force turnovers, while the front seven should be suffocating for the UTEP offense. All in all, a sound tune-up win in Norman where plenty of depth players should see playing time.
Oklahoma 45, UTEP 3

NFL players diagnosed with advanced CTE after death who also demonstrated cognitive impairment in testing during their life still did not meet the requirements for financial compensation under the NFL Concussion Settlement, according to a Boston University study published Wednesday.
Researchers examined 33 NFL players diagnosed with CTE after an autopsy who had completed the baseline ****** sment program (BAP) stipulated by the 2014 settlement – that ended a years-long class-action lawsuit – in what researchers called the largest study to date linking cognitive testing performance during life with CTE confirmed posthumously.
The results, published in JAMA Network Open, found that seven participants had advanced (Stage 3 or 4) CTE. Six of those seven showed measurable cognitive impairment on testing, yet all seven received the lowest impairment rating (Level 0) on the BAP's system, according to documentation provided to researchers by players' families.
"The BAP's diagnostic criteria might miss cases of cognitive impairment that are objectively measurable and ****** ociated with confirmed CTE pathology," Michael Alosco, PhD, co-director of clinical research at the BU CTE Center said in a statement. "This has important implications for former players seeking diagnosis and potential compensation through the NFL Concussion Settlement."
The participants' average age at the time of testing was 63, and their average age of death was 65. The most-common problem was memory, particularly short-term, with 63% of the participants affected. Executive function (52%) and language (41%) were other common impairments.

The reshuffling of the Juventus attack has officially claimed its biggest outgoing move of deadline day.
Juventus have announced that forward Jonathan David has completed a transfer to Spanish side Atlético Madrid on an initial season-long loan deal for the 2026–27 campaign. The move gives Diego Simeone's side an option to make the transfer permanent next summer.
As Danny mentioned yesterday, this is a loan with an option to buy with no reported clauses that would turn the option into an obligation. The club is reporting that David moves to Madrid on a free loan for the season. If Atlético decide to trigger their option to buy next summer, the permanent transfer will cost them €25 million, payable over four financial years.
David's time in Turin comes to a temporary close after a single season. Arriving on a free transfer from Lille in the summer of 2025, he provided rotational cover upfront but struggled to establish himself. For Atlético, David's off-the-ball work rate and box movement fit seamlessly into Simeone's system, while the loan arrangement frees up valuable **** e on Juve's squad roster as deadline day comes to a close.
Good luck in Madrid, Jonathan!

A little nervy, somewhat disjointed at times and by no means a complete ninety-minute performance from Sunderland, but given the events of the past week, encompassing the fallout from the Ipswich loss and a lack of breakthroughs in the transfer market, this was the kind of victory that we were never going to turn our noses up at.
For everyone connected with the club, a marathon season awaits.
Points on the board and a genuine sense of momentum are vital, and after Wilson Isidor swept home his first goal of the campaign having failed to take an even more gilt-edged opportunity minutes earlier after being teed up by Granit Xhaka, he showed why the club were willing to extend his contract and why Régis Le Bris was determined to keep him on Wearside, to the point of being unusually forthright when asked about it two weeks prior.
A pressure game? High stakes? Maybe not, but don't underestimate the importance of the win, not least because the naysayers would've been queuing up to throw verbal barbs had we not delivered when it mattered.
The victory itself and the fact that we're now off and running for 2026/2027 felt far more satisfying than the display on which it was founded, as Sunderland weren't brilliant on Sunday — far from it, in fact.

Josh Chambers: Joe Mazzulla says his goal as Celtics coach is to be forgotten "If the people around you didn't do what they do… I wouldn't do anything. The thing I reflect on the most is… I think you have to be willing to be forgotten. I think that's kind of my main goal." "I want to be forgotten about. Because that means after you… It was better. I think that's what it means to be a Celtic. However long you play, coach, work for the Celtics…" "Your job is to keep it exactly where it's at or bring it better. You cannot bring it down. If you leave and it gets worse, that's your fault. If you leave and they win, and they forgot about you, you did your job." "I talk about that every day with the staff. Our job is to one day be forgotten about because you did your job. It became about something bigger than you." "It's a burden and a love for being with the Celtics… But it's a responsibility. I think we could take that into our daily life. Can I leave it so much better that they don't remember me because the next person came and was better?"

What did Mazzulla tell him about what he saw in Portugal and Portuguese basketball? "I think he liked what he saw. He said there are people who can make it there if they really want to work hard. And I think he really loved Portugal. I think the thing he liked the most was the food. It was a good time. He came alone, but he said next year he's coming with his wife and kids. We'll welcome them with open arms," Queta revealed. As for his expectations for the Celtics next season, Queta expects them to "be competitive again." "The first time I really played meaningful minutes was when I started in Houston, and that kind of came

On paper, before the 2026 college football season kicks off, the Oregon Ducks have the best offense in the Big Ten, better than USC, and maybe the whole sport. Dante Moore is primed to be the first quarterback taken in the upcoming NFL draft, and he has an embarrassment of riches to throw the ball to. The Oregon Ducks' receiver room is completely stacked with versatile weapons in Dakorien Moore, Evan Stewart, and Jeremiah McClellan. The Ducks also have two tight ends who can be better than last year's first-round draft pick, Kenyon Sadiq.
To complement that, Oregon has an elite run game once again. That sounds promising, and Oregon will be headed for offensive dominance. However, the USC Trojans have both a potential elite passing attack and run game.
Here is my hot take of the week, for game week for the USC Trojans:
Waymond Jordan and King Miller have their own case for best backfield in college football. Both backs have the potential to run for 1,000 yards. The Trojans' offensive line will be better and more experienced than last year, setting both backs up for great success.
Jayden Maiava is also set up for great success with an embarrassment of riches in pass catchers too, just like Moore. Maiava has a handful of freshman playmakers who can be special early. Mark Bowman and ***** ie Feaster will become top targets for Maiava right out of the gate. With Tanook Hines healthy now, Maiava will have his Makai Lemon replacement.

It's time to make your predictions for the 2026 College Football season! Everyone has an opinion on who will be in the 12-team field in its third year and here's mine!
But first, you must know, in 2022, the College Football season featured four teams each make it to 11-0, in 2023, five teams accomplished that feat, and in 2025, we had three squads make it. 10 of those 12 teams reached 12-0.
This year, I think we could see four teams potentially undefeated through 10 to 12 games. They are the top four teams in my playoff bracket. As a reminder, the top four teams get a bye week in the first round. I have them slated as the following:
1. Ohio State Buckeyes
2025 Record: 12-2 (9-0)
2026 Record Prediction: 12-0 (9-0)
Odds to make the CFB Playoff: -360
Ohio State goes to Texas, Indiana, and USC, plus have a road game at Oregon on the schedule. With all that, I truly think this Buckeyes team is up for the test. They, like a few other teams, have an elite quarterback, top end talent and depth at wide receiver, a stable offensive line, nasty front seven, and some freaks in the secondary.

The Pittsburgh Steelers executed a wave of roster moves a few days out from their preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.
On Monday, the Steelers not only activated Jalen Ramsey off the physically unable to perform list, but signed cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau and running back Alex Tecza, as well as placing defensive back Israel Mukuamu on the reserve/injured list and releasing rookie kicker Laith Marjan.
Guilbeau played four years at Texas (2022-2025) before joining the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft. He recorded 124 combined tackles, one sack, one interception, and 10 passes defended during his college career.
Tecza had a similar path to that of Eli Heidenreich, as he's also a Pittsburgh native who attended Mt. Lebanon High School and played collegiate football at Navy. During his three seasons (2023-2025) as a Navy Midshipman, Tecza recorded 2,687 yards from scrimmage and 26 total touchdowns.
It remains to be seen if both players can get up to speed in time to get a lot of playing time during the preseason matchup against the Bills, but both players are more than likely competing for practice squad spots this close to final roster cuts.

One super talent has agreed a five year contract with Liverpool and handed in a transfer request.
Liverpool need to sign a winger. It is probably one of the clearest priorities facing the club right now.
The departure of Mohamed Salah has left a huge hole in the attack, both in terms of goals and creativity. Replacing someone of Salah's quality was never going to be easy, but Liverpool cannot simply hope that the existing squad can fill the void.
What is missing is someone who can provide genuine width, pace and the ability to beat a defender one-on-one. Liverpool need a winger capable of stretching teams, creating chances from nothing and giving opponents something different to think about.
That becomes even more important under Andoni Iraola. His football relies heavily on intensity, quick transitions and attacking players who are comfortable taking risks. Wingers are therefore not just useful additions to the squad; they are central to how he wants Liverpool to play.

Scottie Scheffler's going to win the PGA Tour money ****** le after the Tour Championship Aug. 27-30 at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta unless he has a total collapse and Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick or Wyndham Clark win and take home the $10 million first-place check.
Scheffler's tie for 12th at the BMW Championship on Aug. 23 at Bellerive in St. Louis earned $426,250 and ****** ped his total earnings this season to $20,937,524. Young ($14,408,482), Fitzpatrick ($14,271,066) and BMW winner Clark ($14,236186) are the only players who can catch Scheffler for the money ****** le, and they need to win for that to happen. The $5 million second-place check won't cut it.
And a victory is no guarantee. If Young, for example, wins the Tour Championship and Scheffler finishes solo third ($3,705,000), he'd nose out Young for the money ****** le. Scheffler is guaranteed at least $355,000 for finishing last at East Lake.
No other player can catch Scheffler. Rory McIlroy, in fourth place, has $9,866,606 and a victory doesn't get him to Scheffler's haul through the BMW.
Another money milestone can fall this week. Both Scheffler and McIlroy can pass Tiger Woods on the career money list, a spot Woods has held for more than 26 years, since Feb. 13, 2000.

Manchester City begin a new era this weekend as Enzo Maresca takes charge of his first Premier League game of the 2026/27 season at home to Bournemouth.
City begin their first season since 2016/17 without Pep Guardiola at the helm, though there is plenty of faith in Maresca, who himself previously served under the Spaniard as an ***** istant manager.
The Italian returns in the top job after an underwhelming spell at Chelsea, and he is tasked with returning City to the summit of the Premier League.
He will have to do it the hard way though, with City having lost the likes of Rodri and Bernardo Silva over the summer. The 3-0 loss to ***** nal in the Community Shield comes too soon to cause real worry, but City will have to make a good start to the season to allay fears of wider troubles across the team.
As for Bournemouth, they begin a new era of their own under Marco Rose, with the German hoping to build on the foundations laid by Andoni Iraola as he leads the Cherries in their first ever season in Europe.

The Seahawks made a big change at running back this offseason and quarterback Sam Darnold likes how things are shaping up in the backfield.
Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker left for Kansas City in free agency and the Seahawks replaced him with first-round pick Jadarian Price. Price's preseason has been hampered by a leg injury, but he was back in action this week and took part in Friday's joint practice with the ****** ans.
The ability Price showed as a runner and receiver in that workout left Darnold singing his praises.
"He's a special player," Darnold said, via the team's website. "He's a really special player. He brings a different facet to the offense that only a guy like him can bring. Whether it's catching passes out of the backfield, catching screens, running in between the tackles, outside of the tackles, he can really do it all. And I know he's just going to continue to get better and learn."
Veteran Zach Charbonnet is still recovering from a torn ACL and the Seahawks don't have any other established backs on the roster, so Price figures to be playing a major role right out of the gate in Seattle. Darnold's review makes that sound like a positive situation for the defending champs.

Former Steelers wide receiver Barry Pearson died Aug. 16, Chris Ward of steelersnow.com reports. Pearson was 76.
Pearson signed with the Steelers as a free agent in 1972 after starring at Northwestern. He played two seasons with the Steelers and three with the Chiefs.
He was on the field for the Immaculate Reception in the Steelers' miracle win over the Raiders in the 1972 playoffs. It was his first career play.
Pearson brought in the play to quarterback Terry Bradshaw.
He caught the 46-yard game-winning touchdown on Monday Night Football against Washington in 1973.

Eighteen years ago, the Blue Jays traded Robinzon Diaz to the Pirates in exchange for Jose Bautista. At the time, the trade received little fanfare—even Bluebird Banter didn't cover it immediately. Only later did we discuss its significance. In hindsight, it became the best trade of J.P. Ricciardi's tenure.
The news did get into a post I did a couple of days later:
With Diaz sent to Pittsburgh to complete the Bautista trade, he comes off our top 11 prospect list. I wasn't sure how to feel about it. Diaz had struggled that year and J.P. Arencibia likely surpassed him, but I still thought Diaz was closer to being major league ready. Looking ahead, we'd need a catcher for next season—or risk a lot of passed ****** .
I missed that one.
The next day, I posted a poll about the trade: 48% of readers liked the move, while 52% did not. Amusingly, I had thought Bautista was a middle infielder back then.

SANBORN — Last year, Niagara Wheatfield came close to ending a seven-year playoff drought.
All that separated it and a trip to Health Sciences/BASC/Charter in the first round of the Section VI Class A playoffs was a point-differential tiebreaker.
Unfortunately for Niagara Wheatfield, it lost the three-way tiebreaker and Kenmore West made the playoffs. Now, the team knows it has a chance to end the drought and get back to the postseason.
Last year, Niagara Wheatfield went 2-7 overall — 2-4 in league play — while being outscored 157-127. The team's season came to an end with a 28-21 loss to North Tonawanda in the first round of the Chuck Funke Bowl tournament.
"Well, expectations are we fell short again," Niagara Wheatfield head coach Erik O'Bryan said. "We lost a tiebreaker last year and want to go to the playoffs. It's been a long time in Niagara Wheatfield."

Did you enjoy that series win over the Astros? Yes? Good, because you're going to need to call on those happy memories as the Mariners face the playoff-bound Brewers. Jake already laid out for you how tough this series is going to be in the series preview, which you should revisit if you haven't.
No Taylor Ward in today's lineup, but per Tim Booth, he worked out pregame and says he's close to being ready to rejoin the lineup, and is available as an option off the bench tonight. Stuart Fairchild is with the team as a member of the taxi squad just in case, as Victor Robles continues to deal with a sore shoulder.
Victor Robles, who missed Sunday's game with right shoulder soreness, is back in the Mariners' lineup tonight.
Game time: 4:40 PT
TV: Mariners TV with Rich Waltz and Ryan Rowland-Smith

Having already seen two offers rejected for Werder Bremen's Karim Coulibaly, RC Strasbourg have now submitted a third bid for the 19-year-old, according to Bild.
The German tabloid reports that the French side are now offering €20 million upfront and that the total package could exceed €25 million with bonuses.
According to the report, this is Strasbourg's final offer for the highly-rated centre-back.
A number of clubs from England, including Newcastle United and Chelsea, have also been linked with Coulibaly, but no move has yet materialised. That could now change if Werder accept Strasbourg's offer.
