There's no getting around it: The market looks expensive on several metrics. The broader benchmark S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) is now up over 102% since the start of 2023 despite some pretty glaring warning signs. In recent years, investors have breezed past the longest inverted yield curve in history, a banking crisis, elevated inflation, and the Iran war.

Although Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) easily ranks among the most relevant names in the market today, the journey forward hasn't always been smooth. Yes, TSM stock is up over 40% on a year-to-date basis, a byproduct of its foundry business feeding virtually the entire global supply of advanced artificial-intelligence hardware. However, the ticker happens to be down roughly 11% since the end of June.
Still, many investors are optimistic about TSM stock for the underlying fundamentals, which may very well enjoy permanent relevance. Notably, despite the near-term choppiness, the Barchart Technical Opinion indicator rates TSM as a 72% Strong Buy. While there might be some turbulence, the overall picture appears enticing.

The Chargers hosted the 49ers for a joint practice on Tuesday, and if social media is any indicator, Los Angeles dominated their California neighbors from up north.
The Bolts were toying with the Niners for the most part, as evidenced by reports and videos out of El Segundo. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was dealing, as the offense was by far the best unit in the practices. Mike McDaniel's offense looked crisp and sharp with the starters.
Herbter's deep ball gave the San Francisco secondary fits all practice long.
The Chargers and 49ers went back and forth with each other, but Los Angeles got the best of them in many areas including the red zone. They had five total team periods, and four of the five team periods came in the red zone when Herbert and Ladd McConkey put up their best performance.
The Chargers defense also showed up and showed out, with rookie Genesis Smith making his mark.

Lowe's approaches its fiscal second-quarter earnings with a different mix of opportunities and risks from its larger rival Home Depot. While both retailers are exposed to the same difficult housing environment, Lowe's remains more dependent on the do-it-yourself customer, making consumer confidence, household budgets and housing affordability particularly important indicators for traders.
The company is scheduled to report its second-quarter 2026 results on August 19, one day after Home Depot. That sequencing could make Lowe's report especially important for investors looking for confirmation of whether the weakness in home improvement is stabilizing or becoming more entrenched.
The key issue is whether Lowe's can continue taking market share even if the broader home improvement market remains broadly flat.
Lowe's delivered a relatively solid fiscal first quarter. Sales increased to $23.1 billion from $20.9 billion a year earlier, while comparable sales rose 0.6%. The company benefited from strong spring execution, a 15.5% increase in online sales, and continued strength in appliances, home services and Pro sales.
Reported diluted EPS came in at $2.90, compared with $2.92 a year earlier. However, the quarter included $96 million of pre-tax expenses related to the acquisitions of Foundation Building Materials and Artisan Design Group. Adjusted diluted EPS increased 3.8% to $3.03.

Home Depot's sales improved during the second quarter as customers focused on smaller projects during the summer months with the U.S. housing sector still mired in a slump.
Revenue increased to $47.86 billion from $45.28 billion, edging out the $47.24 billion that Wall Street had expected, according to a survey by FactSet.
Globally, sales at stores open at least a year, a key indicator of a retailer's health, climbed 1.7%. In the U.S., comparable store sales rose 1.3%.
"Our second quarter results exceeded our expectations," Chief Financial Officer Richard McPhail said Tuesday. "We saw broad based demand across the business as customers continued to engage in smaller projects."
Customer transactions slipped 1% in the quarter, but the amount shoppers spent rose to $92.50 per average receipt from $90.01 a year earlier.

MIAMI GARDENS ― The Miami Dolphins activated rookie wide receiver Chris Bell from the non-football injury list on Monday, Aug. 17.
Bell has looked good in work on the side with trainers as he planned a return from a season-ending knee injury at Louisville.
This is an indicator Miami could have rookie receivers Caleb Douglas and Chris Bell available for the season opener at Las Vegas on Sunday, Sept. 13.
This is a huge boost for quarterback Malik Willis and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.
Bell was a third-round pick in the last NFL Draft, 94th overall.

There was a rare bit of good injury news for San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa on Sunday.
Bosa didn't start training camp on the PUP list after tearing his ACL in Week 3 last season. The 49ers instead opted to ease him into action. Despite not participating in team drills throughout training camp, Bosa wound up dealing with tendinitis in the knee he suffered the ACL tear in. That ailment was originally labeled as "soreness" by the 49ers and Bosa was a no-show at practice in any capacity for the better part of two weeks.
A player missing practice typically means they're on a side field working out or watching the session on the sidelines. Bosa has been entirely absent while dealing with his knee injury. That changed Sunday according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, who pointed out in his practice recap that Bosa was working out while reporters and fans were in attendance.
Perhaps most notable here: We had our first side field Bosa sighting since he began experiencing tendinitis and soreness early in camp. He did an extensive workout on the side field. A (public) step in the right direction for him.
It's not an indicator that Bosa is nearing a return, but having him work out on a side field where reporters and fans would be able to see him is a sign that the 49ers' star defensive end is at least trending in the right direction.

Chelsea are actively reshaping their attacking options this summer, and Liam Delap has emerged as one of the clearest indicators of that process. According to TALKSPORT, the striker has been told he can leave Stamford Bridge and, crucially, "wants to stay in the Premier League" despite interest from Como and the prospect of Champions League football in Italy.
That stance appears significant. Como, now managed by Cesc Fabregas, can offer a high-profile European platform after qualifying for the Champions League through a fourth-place Serie A finish. Yet Delap's preference points towards a different priority, regular football in England, familiarity with the division, and perhaps the chance to re-establish momentum after a difficult year in west London.
Photo IMAGO
Chelsea are "demanding £40m for Delap", a figure that would deliver a £10m profit on the £30m they paid Ipswich last summer. From the club's perspective, that valuation reflects age, homegrown status, and a belief that his difficult first campaign does not erase what he showed before arriving.
Still, the numbers from last season are hard to ignore. Delap "struck just once in the Premier League and twice overall in an injury-hit campaign", a return that left him unable to build on the promise he showed in 2024/25. Chelsea, now under Xabi Alonso, are trimming a bloated senior group and appear intent on making firm decisions quickly before the September 1 deadline.

Burned-out employees are often easy to spot. But what about people who some workplace experts describe as "rusting out" on the job?
A survey by scheduling software provider Deputy of hourly workers across the hospitality, retail, healthcare and other sectors found that many people are languishing in their jobs and are functionally less productive than their employers expect.
Roughly 15% of those polled reported feeling merely "OK" about their jobs, a sign that researchers say can lead to lackluster performance, Star Levandowski, senior vice president of business and people operations at Deputy, told CBS News. "We see that as an early indicator to rust out, when people are not feeling challenged enough," she said.
Think of a mechanical tool that's shiny and sharp when new, but that can get rusty over time if left hanging unused.
"If you feel like you're not being used to the best of your abilities, you feel like you're just hanging out, or rusting out," Levandowski said.

LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Market gauges of inflation-adjusted borrowing costs have shot to their highest in more than a decade across major economies as AI companies and governments ramp up bond sales, raising risks for stock markets and the world economy.
Real yields are the returns that a bond investor demands above inflation and are an important indicator of true borrowing costs for governments and companies. They are typically determined by expectations about growth, interest rates and the supply and demand of money.
U.S. 30-year real yields, as measured by inflation-linked bonds, are near 18-year highs at around 3%, while British and German 10-year real yields are trading at around their highest in more than a decade.
Investors and **** ysts say a surge in borrowing by AI "hyperscalers", at a time when governments are still spending heavily, has been a leading factor pushing up yields, as buyers demand higher returns to keep purchasing the flood of bonds hitting markets.

At first glance, Vistra Corp (VST) doesn't seem like a particularly great investment. It's not just for the matter that VST stock has incurred an 88% Strong Sell rating by the Barchart Technical Opinion indicator, though that is an obvious distraction. Primarily, the ticker's 60-month beta translates to an incredibly choppy trajectory that puts confidence in short supply.
However, as an options trade, we may be able to leverage the wild dynamics of VST stock to our benefit. In essence, Vistra represents a fundamentally relevant enterprise, thanks to the company's integrated retail electricity and power generation. Naturally, artificial intelligence has very strong implications for VST's broader trend.

Training camp is filled with position battles, but not all of them receive the same attention. This time around, much of the focus has centered on the Philadelphia Eagles' wide receiver competition. There have also been conversations about a possible late safety addition by Howie Roseman as the backend of Vic Fangio's defense remains a talking point.
There's the backup quarterback race, Tanner McKee vs. Andy Dalton. No one, however, should ignore another important battle, one quietly taking shape among the backups along the offensive line. Drew Kendall may be one of the early winners.
Per multiple sources who have attended camp, the second-year veteran has consistently found himself in a prominent role whenever the Eagles have needed reinforcements up front. More importantly, he has continued to make the most of those opportunities. He has received rave reviews for his work.
One of the clearest indicators of a player's standing during training camp isn't what coaches say. It's where they place him. Kendall has repeatedly been among the first offensive linemen called upon when the Eagles need someone to step into a larger role.
Whether filling in at guard or handling additional responsibilities with various units, his workload suggests the coaching staff has developed a growing level of trust in him. That trust isn't handed out freely, especially in Philadelphia.

Mortgage rates have been higher in the last few years. But where are rates headed in the next five years, and should you wait for mortgage rates to fall significantly before buying or refinancing? Mortgage interest rates are determined by several factors, all of which can give us clues about the future. Let's take a closer look at mortgage rate predictions over the next five years.
Here are the housing market predictions for 2026.
One of the most useful indicators for predicting mortgage rates is the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note. Mortgage rates and 10-year Treasury yields typically move in the same direction, although mortgage rates are usually higher because lenders factor in additional risks. This difference between the two is known as the spread, and we'll account for that when estimating where mortgage rates could go.
With that in mind, the first step is to look at where economists believe Treasury yields are headed over the next five years. To build a forecast, we'll combine expert economic projections with data compiled using artificial intelligence.

The global healthcare ecosystem in 2026 is leading to a strong recovery in clinical research, with global pharma R&D investment topping $250 billion and the clinical research organization (CRO) market rising to $72 billion at roughly a 9% annual pace. As biopharma companies move capital into complex biologic pipelines, AI-powered trial improvement, and practical data ******* ysis, outsourcing fervor grows. For industry leaders such as IQVIA Holdings Inc. (NYSE:IQV), this macro environment provides structural tailwinds, allowing scaled global operators to grab high-margin clinical trial operations and lock in multi-year backlog visibility.
IQVIA Holdings Inc. (NYSE:IQV) proved the extent of its operational recovery in its second-quarter 2026 results on July 29, exceeding the upper end of its internal guidance across all main financial indicators and driving an 8.8% pre-market share jump. Total revenue was $4.368 billion, increasing 8.7% year-over-year, exceeding ******* yst estimates, while adjusted diluted earnings per share increased 12.1% year-over-year to $3.15, beating consensus projections of $3.02 to $3.06 by a significant margin. At the same time, adjusted EBITDA increased by 9.2% to $994 million, sustaining a 22.8% margin.
While headline earnings and revenue were solid, the true source of the market's optimism was an impressive spike in clinical bookings. IQVIA's core Research & Development Solutions division recorded record net new bookings of $3.15 billion, up 19% year-over-year, with a strong book-to-bill ratio of 1.22x. Trailing-twelve-month bookings increased 13% to $11.3 billion, bringing the total contracted backlog to a record $34.2 billion. Management anticipates that $9.2 billion of this backlog will be converted into recognized revenue during the coming twelve months.
IQVIA Holdings Inc. (NYSE:IQV) raised its full-year financial guidance for 2026 in response to record backlog visibility. Full-year sales are now expected to range between $17.275 billion and $17.475 billion, with adjusted EBITDA rising to $4.0-$4.05 billion and adjusted EPS targeting $12.80-$13. The new projection includes a 100 basis point improvement in organic growth estimates, as well as M&A contributions, while full-year EBITDA margins are expected to remain unchanged at around 23.2% as internal efficiency measures absorb pass-through cost friction. Operating cash flow also increased 26% year-over-year to $558 million, while free cash flow grew 23.3% to $360 million during the quarter.

With the LIV Golf Tour hanging on by a thread, Bryson DeChambeau hosted a players only meeting to discuss the future of the league. The meeting took place subsequently after LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil and other executives met with the captains of the LIV Golf teams. While few players commented on the happenings, there are some indicators.
Richard Bland said, "Bryson just ran through what he knows, and obviously, we're trying to do it as a group, but we're individuals as well, so I think the next two to three weeks is going to be where it's at. We're in this together; we're fully backing Scott. I think probably in the next two to three weeks we'll have a bigger picture. We're just in that kind of stage at the minute that we're positive with what's going on, but we just need everything to be fully signed off so you can go forward."
LIV Golf has yet to confirm if their Team Championship will occur as scheduled at The Cardinal in Plymouth, Michigan on August 27th-30th. The preparations for the event still need completion, which is unusual. It seems unlikely they will be finished.

Nate Rouette and his brother Nelson went shark fishing on Cape Cod hoping for an exciting catch, but were shocked by what they reeled in -- a tropical species of shark with a reputation for eating everything it can swallow.
The brothers, longtime sport fishermen who live in Massachusetts, released a juvenile tiger shark in late July after catching it from a beach. The five-foot shark is far more common in warmer, southern waters such as the Caribbean Sea, and scientists said its appearance off Falmouth, Massachusetts, is an indicator of warming seas caused by climate change.
Nate and Nelson said the late-night catch was a thrill after hours of seeking far more common brown sharks.
"And I saw those horizontal lines, indicating it was a tiger shark, which was super cool," said Nate, who is the social media manager for On The Water magazine. "Immediately I started yelling to my brother, 'It's a tiger, it's a tiger shark!' And he was in disbelief."
The Rouette brothers caught a young specimen of a shark that can grow to more than 15 feet (4.6 meters) and 1,400 pounds (635 kilograms). Tiger sharks eat a wide array of other ocean life, including fish, crustaceans and birds, and are famous for sometimes eating man-made items such as old license plates and shoes that are later found in their stomachs. The adults are also more dangerous to humans than most shark species, though unprovoked fatal bites are rare.

The NFL preseason opener is just days away.
For the first time in nearly half a year, football is returning to the field – and the screen. It's a sign that the dog days of summer are in full swing, with the fall lurking in the background. Before you know it, colder temperatures and earlier sunsets will become the norm, an indicator that football season is upon us.
As usual, the NFL brings the sport back with the annual Hall of Fame game.
This season it'll be the Arizona Cardinals against the Carolina Panthers, two franchises with connections to the Hall of Fame class of 2026.
On Aug. 8, former Arizona Cardinal great Larry Fitzgerald and Carolina Panther legend Luke Kuechly will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Days ahead of that celebration, there is a game to be played – even if it's not necessarily Hall of Fame quality.

Ilika PLC (AIM:IKA, OTCQX:ILIKF, FRA:I8A) this week outlined continued commercial progress across its Stereax and Goliath solid-state battery businesses, with chief executive Graeme Purdy highlighting the company's transition into revenue generation alongside several commercial catalysts expected over the next 12 to 18 months.
Purdy, in an interview in the Proactive studio, said the most significant development for the Stereax business had been its move into commercial production, with Ilika now supplying commercial-grade electrodes to Cirtec for incorporation into the M300 medical device product, which is expected to reach the market later this year.
He said the company had already recognised approximately £100,000 in revenue during the previous financial year, describing it as an early indicator of future growth. Purdy added that a second revenue stream is expected to emerge through royalty payments once products incorporating Stereax batteries are sold to end customers.
Here, we take a closer look at what was said when Graeme Purdy joined the Proactive studio.
Proactive: You've described the past year as one of strong commercial progress. What do you see as the standout achievements across both the Stereax and Goliath programmes?
