Republicans were already struggling to defuse simmering voter frustrations over the cost of living ahead of the midterms. Then President Donald Trump rekindled his trade wars.
Trump's latest actions — especially his decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, inviting retaliatory duties from America's No. 2 trading partner — has sparked new pushback from GOP lawmakers and candidates.
His moves are set to reverberate especially hard in a handful of states crucial to the party's hopes of keeping their Senate majority. That includes northern border states, such as Maine and Michigan, as well as agriculture-heavy battlegrounds like Iowa and North Carolina that have been buffeted for more than a year by Trump's embrace of hardball trade tactics.
"We've got 71 days, and right now we don't have a positive message to tell farm country," said retiring GOP Sen. Thom Tillis, whose North Carolina seat is at risk of flipping into Democrats' hands in November.
Trump's threat to impose tariffs on Canada is creating "tension," Tillis added, and that "the party that owns that tension is the party that will probably suffer the consequences in November."

Burned-out employees are often easy to spot. But what about people who some workplace experts describe as "rusting out" on the job?
A survey by scheduling software provider Deputy of hourly workers across the hospitality, retail, healthcare and other sectors found that many people are languishing in their jobs and are functionally less productive than their employers expect.
Roughly 15% of those polled reported feeling merely "OK" about their jobs, a sign that researchers say can lead to lackluster performance, Star Levandowski, senior vice president of business and people operations at Deputy, told CBS News. "We see that as an early indicator to rust out, when people are not feeling challenged enough," she said.
Think of a mechanical tool that's shiny and sharp when new, but that can get rusty over time if left hanging unused.
"If you feel like you're not being used to the best of your abilities, you feel like you're just hanging out, or rusting out," Levandowski said.

Reuters reported earlier this week that Trump's forthcoming speech would cover purported voting machine vulnerabilities and that the White House was weighing whether to release controversial intelligence to do with China's intentions or abilities to disrupt the 2020 vote.

Have you ever walked along a beach and wondered about the reason behind the large concrete blocks or bits of rusting metal emerging from the shingle?
Recent storms and shifting sands have exposed various World War Two sea defences at sites in Norfolk and Suffolk.
Today, the East Anglian coast is a largely peaceful sight, but from summer 1940 it was a place of frenzied construction.
"It was frantic throughout July, August and September in 1940, as they constructed defences as fast as they could to block an invasion all along the UK coast," said Dave Thurlow, who works at the RSPB reserve north of Sizewell in Suffolk.
Very little had been done to build defences around the United Kingdom until after the British Expeditionary Force was forced to evacuate from the beaches of Dunkirk.
