It's the day after one of the surprise healthcare stories of 2026.
Moderna (MRNA) shares fell 20% in early trading on Thursday after a stunning 177% gain yesterday on news that the biotech and partner Merck (MRK) notched a big breakthrough in the fight against cancer.
The pair announced that their personalized mRNA cancer vaccine — called intismeran — successfully hit its primary goal in a Phase 3 late-stage trial, demonstrating a meaningful reduction in melanoma recurrence in patients who had already had their tumors surgically removed.
The trial compared using intismeran alongside Merck's well-known immunotherapy drug Keytruda against using Keytruda alone. Patients who received the combination lived meaningfully longer without their cancer returning or spreading.
"It's a home run, maybe even a grand slam," Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel said on Yahoo Finance (video above). "The results are pretty amazing."

(NewsNation) — A former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention faults the federal government for recommending that pregnant women take mRNA vaccines during the COVID pandemic.
Dr. Robert Redfield, who headed the CDC during the pandemic, joined "Katie Pavlich Tonight" to comment on revived discussion about whether the vaccine can cause miscarriages in women early in their pregnancy.
He said he hasn't seen data establishing a link but said it made no sense to recommend the vaccine to expectant mothers.
Breaking down Republican accusations against Anthony Fauci
"I never thought we should vaccinate pregnant women. I was not in favor of that policy recommendation because the COVID vaccine did not prevent infection," Redfield said Tuesday.

During the August 6 episode of CNBC's Mad Money, Jim Cramer pointed to a growing sector rotation as portfolio managers look for innovation outside the mega-cap technology ***** e. He said:
Finally, tech had such a run that portfolio managers want exposure to other sectors of the market that still have innovation. Think of them as non- tech tech stocks. For the… Charitable Trust club, we've been emphasizing Eli Lilly and Johnson & Johnson. And we talked about these… I talked about them at length with Jeff Marks today at our 10:20 call. They both had terrific quarters and deserve to be bought on any weakness.
Cramer's thesis highlights how mega-cap healthcare operators provide defensive shelter with strong dividend profiles and maintain high-growth product pipelines. Cramer further emphasized that innovation in biotechnology is driving tangible financial gains. He said:
Amgen just racked up an excellent quarter. And credit where credit's due, time to accept that Moderna has begun to realize its stream of specialized vaccines for specific illnesses. Just last night, the company, it received FDA approval for its mRNA flu vaccine. Well, there's a reason why the stock's up 83% for the year.
Later in the August 6 episode, a caller asked Cramer about Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) after holding the stock through recent buyout speculation. In response, Cramer remarked:

Pfizer has upgraded the bottom-end of its full-year (FY) revenue outlook by $500m as performance from the drugmaker's lead products more than compensated for weaker Covid-19-related sales.
Pfizer now expects 2026 revenue to land between $60.5bn and $62.5bn, up from the $59.5bn to $62.5bn range it previously forecast.
According to the big pharma company, the revised outlook reflects a $1.5bn better-than-expected performance from its non-Covid products. Sales for Covid-19 products, which include antiviral Paxlovid and mRNA vaccine Comirnaty, are conversely expected to bring in $1bn less. The former's sales were down 95% in Q2, while the latter dropped 34%.
Pfizer emerged as a pharmaceutical powerhouse during the pandemic, but lower infection rates and narrower use cases mean its Covid-19 brands are impacting the company's bottom line.
Pfizer still recorded revenues of $15bn in Q2, up 3% from the same quarter in 2025, meaning its non-Covid products more than offset headwinds. This figure beat consensus estimates, as per Citi ******* ysts.

Moderna, Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) was among the stocks Jim Cramer commented on as he advised investors on how to take advantage of Wednesday's market rotation. Cramer highlighted the stock's significant gains during the year, as he said:
If you look at the market's best performers year to date, nearly all of them are either companies that sell hardware into the data center or companies that sell hardware to the hardware makers. But there's one solitary exception in the top 15: Moderna, the biotech company best known for its COVID vaccine. Right now, Moderna's the 12th best-performing stock in the S&P 500, up 146% year to date. Now, that is pretty impressive… The truth is, after spending years lost in the post-COVID wilderness, this company's now got a lot going for it. I think the rally's for real. I think the company's for real now…
It's no wonder that Moderna stock has caught fire; think about all these great things they're doing. For the first time in a long time, the company seems like it is something to get excited about in the not too distant future. But, and this is a big but, let's not forget that Moderna's still losing money. In fact, they don't expect to reach cash break-even levels until 2028. Actual earnings per share likely won't turn positive until 2029. But the company is at last beginning to realize its true potential. Plus, while I found Moderna's cancer trials very impressive, these are basically just cancer treatments. They're not the personalized anti-cancer vaccines that management's been talking about for years that got me so excited about the stock…
Let me give you the bottom line on this amazing story that wasn't amazing for a long time: Even though Moderna's still early on its turnaround, it's hard not to be excited about what the company presented just last week. Moderna's got a plethora of thoughtful new products and a clear roadmap to profitability for the first time in such a long time. Honestly, now, look, I am a bit wary of chasing any stock that's up nearly 150%, but the truth is Moderna finally feels investible again. That said, I recommend waiting for a pullback, there probably will be one, before you buy. Take your time. I think Moderna's got a bright future, though. It'll take years to get there… For the first time in ages, I like having a position in Moderna.

While artificial intelligence stocks had a whipsaw June, they've had a stellar 2026 so far. Memory giants Sandisk (SNDK), Micron Technology (MU), Western Digital (WDC) and Seagate Technology (STX) have more than tripled this year, along with fellow S&P 500 components Intel (INTC), Marvell Technology (MRVL) and Dell Technologies (DELL). All are AI stocks.
Indeed, some 22 S&P 500 stocks have doubled through June 30. All but one, Moderna (MRNA), is an AI play. Of the seven standouts, Intel and Marvell are arguably actionable. Dell and Western Digital stock are close to entries.
Even given that memory plays are leading a hot AI rally, Sandisk stock's performance is stunning, with a massive 857.8% gain through 2026. But that looks positively mild compared to Sandisk earnings growth of 644% and 7,903% in the last two quarters, with 11,500% seen for the just-ended June quarter.
Since hitting a record 2,354.39 on June 22, SNDK stock has whipsawed up and down, but continued to hold the 21-day line.
Micron stock has quadrupled this year, up 304.4%. Earnings have exploded 682% and 1,215% in the past two quarters, with the memory-chip giant last week guiding sharply higher.

Inside a lab in the French city of Orleans, scientists are testing out the limits of molecules in our body called messenger RNA -- best known for being used in Covid-19 vaccines -- in the hopes of finding a breakthrough treatment for a particularly deadly cancer.
Messenger RNA, or mRNA, are molecules that carry genetic information from the DNA in every cell in the body to create specific proteins.
"For cancer, this message will stimulate the patient's ability to effectively fight tumours," Dimitri Szymczak, project manager of French research institute INSERM's ART lab in Orleans, told AFP.
