Most of the baseball world had its attention fixed on Tarik Skubal Tuesday night.
The former Detroit Tigers ace made his first start in Dodger blue against the Chicago Cubs, allowing two runs across six innings in a 5-1 Los Angeles loss.
Back in Seattle, one of Skubal's former teammates delivered the performance Tigers fans will remember.
Troy Melton was absolutely brilliant.
The young right-hander shut out the Mariners across seven innings, allowing only three hits while helping Detroit pull closer in an increasingly crowded American League playoff race.

That is certainly something Bill Simmons will be hoping happens, as he has decided to support Spurs in the upcoming campaign.

Ibrahim Mbaye wants out of PSG, and the Parisians already have interest from Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen in their winger.
If you enjoy PSG Talk coverage and want to see more of it, add us as a preferred source on Google to make us a favourite and see more of our content.
Ibrahim Mbaye's move away from PSG is getting closer and closer as August progresses.
The situation has got pretty messy in the last few weeks, with journalist Romain Molina exposing some pretty damaging stuff about the winger's claims and demands. That will have hurt the young talent's value, and it's also seemingly convinced PSG that there's no point persisting with him.

As most of you know, Cartilage Free Captain, or rather, yours truly was on the ground in person to experience Tottenham Hotspur's preseason tour of Sydney as they took part in the aptly named Sydney Super Cup.
This presented a rare chance for many fans to get up close and personal with the team that they love. Though this is the third time Spurs have made trips to Australia in four years (the most recent being against West Ham United in Perth and Newcastle United in Melbourne), it was the first time in a decade the Lilywhites had made an appearance in Australia's most densely populated city.
Once on the ground, I had the idea to write up a bit of a summary of the trip, but from a slightly different angle. Here at Cartilage Free Captain, we are not journalists; we are fans. But we always try and write from a balanced, factual, and ******* ytical perspective. As such, at times we try and remove the fan angle from our writing in order to deliver you, our readers, the best ******* ysis money can buy. Or rather, the best ******* ysis you can get for free. We like to think we're at least on par with the Metro.
But like I said, we are massive fans – and so I thought: why not let my flag fly a bit? What has this tournament and trip been like from a fan perspective… but also from having access a fan might not usually have? So this piece (and two to three others that will follow in a series this week) are being written from that point of view: part travel blog, part human-interest piece, part fan boy experience. Maybe that's of interest to you; maybe not!
But I plan on talking about the trip; about fans I talked to in Sydney; about my experience as a fan walking into the press box and seeing Spurs play for the first time. Hopefully you enjoy.

Hull City are among the clubs tracking Manor Solomon as Tottenham continue to reshape their squad before the Premier League season begins. According to I News, Spurs still expect several departures in the closing stages of the window, and Solomon is one of the names moving towards the front of that queue.
The 27-year-old has had pre-season minutes under Roberto De Zerbi, yet the wider picture appears clear. He is not part of the plans for 2026-27 and Tottenham are open to a deal. West Ham are described as the current frontrunners, although Hull City have registered interest and are watching developments closely.
Photo IMAGO
Tottenham's valuation is around £20m, with early bids potentially landing anywhere between £10m and £20m. That range leaves room for movement and makes this one worth following, especially for Championship clubs ******* sing whether there is a structure that could work.
Solomon joined Spurs on a free transfer from Fulham in 2023 but has struggled to establish himself in north London. He has made only five senior appearances for the club and has since taken in loan spells at Leeds United, Villarreal and Fiorentina. There were moments when a route back looked possible, but another temporary exit followed and the expectation now is for a permanent move.

The Premier League predictions for 2026-27 are already beginning to take shape, even with significant business still to be completed before the transfer window closes. Early ***** sments around the division point towards a familiar debate at the top, with Manchester City and ***** nal viewed as the standout contenders, while Liverpool are seen as some way short of mounting a serious challenge.
That outlook comes at a time of considerable change among England's leading clubs. ***** nal enter the new season as reigning champions after ending their long wait for the ***** le in 2025-26. City are embarking on a new era under Enzo Maresca, Liverpool have turned to Andoni Iraola following a difficult campaign and Chelsea are also adjusting to fresh leadership under Xabi Alonso. In that context, pre-season optimism has spread across the league, but the suggestion from Jamie Carragher is that only two clubs should genuinely believe the trophy is within reach.
Photo IMAGO
In his view, the current landscape is relatively clear despite the caveat that the market can still alter the balance. He said: "Where we are right now, and we know there's still a month to go transfer-wise, I can only see ***** nal or City," he said.
That ***** sment places ***** nal and Manchester City in a tier of their own at this stage. ***** nal's consistency last season has carried real weight in shaping expectations, while City's enduring quality has ensured they remain firmly in the conversation even after a managerial change that would be destabilising for most clubs.

WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department has notified Congress that it plans to close five foreign missions in a rare downsizing of America's global diplomatic footprint, according ‌to people familiar with the notice.
In the notice sent to some congressional committees late last week, the State ‌Department said it planned to close its posts in St. George's, Grenada; Nagoya, ****** an; Medan, Indonesia; Douala, Cameroon; and Winnipeg, Canada. The people familiar with the notice spoke on the condition of anonymity because the notice was not public.
The expected closures, which have not been previously reported, represent a rare example of the U.S. closing multiple foreign missions in a downsizing that is not tied to a particular geopolitical event.
Early last year, during the opening months of the Trump administration, the State Department began preparations to shut down nearly ‌a dozen foreign missions, Reuters and other media outlets reported at the time, as part of a broader push by the Republican president to transform the U.S. bureaucracy so that it is fully aligned with his "America First" agenda.

Manchester United are poised to offload two goalkeepers, with Radek Vitek set to join Middlesbrough in a deal potentially worth up to £14 million, while Altay Bayindir prepares for a loan move to Celta Vigo.
Vitek, a 22-year-old Czech shot-stopper, is nearing a permanent switch to last season's Championship play-off finalists Middlesbrough following an impressive loan spell at Bristol City.
The young keeper initially arrived at Old Trafford from Sigma Olomouc in 2020, having also spent time on loan at Accrington and Blau-Weiss Linz before his successful stint at Ashton Gate.
The Press ******* ociation understands that United have secured matching rights and a buy-back option as part of the agreement with Boro, which includes bonuses that could push the fee to £14m, alongside a sell-on clause of up to 35 per cent.

A very real competition is unfolding at the linebacker position for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
While the thought throughout the offseason was that Ventrell Miller would step into the starting role next to Foye Oluokun, Branson Combs has entered the mix and is pushing for those snaps.
"That's a heated competition in that room," said defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile. "It's about stacking days and continuing to produce. But the guys in there are in a good competition and they're all playing hard."
Each linebacker brings a different element to the Jaguars' defense. John Shipley of Jaguars on SI notes the plays in the run game that Miller has made throughout camp, while Combs has stood out as a coverage defender.
"I think Combs has a narrow lead due to his coverage ability," wrote Shipley, "but it certainly feels like the Jaguars are going to let this battle go down to the wire. .. "Right now, it certainly feels like it is too close to call."

The Colorado Buffaloes held their first media availability of fall camp after practice Tuesday, with a couple of players and defensive coordinator Chris Marve speaking with the media at Fountain-Fort Carson High School.
Cornerback Cree Thomas and linebacker Gideon Lampron spoke highly of the work the team has put in the first two days and how training away from Boulder has helped make the team closer.
"First day pretty incredible," Lampron said on practicing in Colorado Springs. "Not a lot of teams are fortunate to do this. Great for team building."
Here is what else we learned from the first media availability of fall camp:
Both Lampron and Thomas discussed how being away from any distractions and living in the dorms for a week is jumpstarting the team's chemistry. Energy is also being boosted with practices being in a new place.

When it comes to the rumblings that are continued around Peyton Watson, Jonathan ***** inga, what are you hearing and how likely is it that the Cavs make a move that could get them both of these players? Chris Fedor: Yeah, I think both of them is highly unlikely. Again, on this podcast, we never say never and we try and deal in reality as much as we possibly can. Getting one of them is going to be hard enough given the salary cap situation that the Cavs are currently in, given the lack of perceived trade ***** ets and given the salary cap situation of some of These other teams that we're talking about here. So for example, you've got the Atlanta Hawks who have said to teams around the NBA it looked we're willing to help out Jonathan ***** inga in a potential sign and trade, but we need to be incentivized in order to do that. We've got to get something back in return that we actually like. And that's part of the holdup, it feels like, between the Hawks and the Los Angeles Lakers, because there are people around the NBA that are saying to themselves, what are the Lakers going to give the Hawks that the Hawks value enough or that the Hawks actually want? The hawks already have 17 guys under contract, so they have some things that they have to do internally.
Cleveland Plain Dealer
The Cavs, sources say, have been in touch with ***** inga's representatives throughout the week, trying to determine whether there is a realistic financial pathway to a deal and what it would cost — both in salary and roster subtractions. With the Cavaliers' current cap situation, any sign-and-trade would create a hard cap at the first apron. — 7/31/2026 Cleveland Plain Dealer
Sources say the 23-year-old ***** inga wants an annual deal in the $15-20 million range, which would necessitate a sign-and-trade with Atlanta involving either swingman Max Strus or Dennis Schroder. The Hawks, already with 17 players on the roster and incredibly close to the luxury tax, would have to cooperate — and actually want what Cleveland, the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers or Milwaukee Bucks are willing to offer in a sign-and-trade. — 7/31/2026 Cleveland Plain Dealer
Sources say the Cavs have expressed interest in free agents DeMar DeRozan, Peyton Watson and Jonathan ***** inga. DeRozan, the 17-year NBA veteran, was waived by Sacramento a little more than three weeks ago and has been viewed leaguewide as a possible low-cost target for any team that missed on LeBron. There's an argument that DeRozan is the best available free agent. — 7/31/2026 Cleveland Plain Dealer

David Friel at The Scottish Sun reports that the recently relegated English side are looking at being third time lucky as they come back to Celtic will their highest bid so far.
Nottingham Forest's £25m million bid for Engels in the closing day of the January transfer window sets the benchmark price that Celtic will be looking for and West Ham, who are keen to bring in the Celtic midfielder as soon as possible, will now have to match that earlier bid if they are to get the green light from Celtic for the the transfer.
Engels has other admirers including Roma and perhaps Forest will return to the table as the window progresses. If there is Premier League interest as the window progresses, Engels, who has already agreed personal terms with the Hammers, may opt for that rather than a season in the Championship.

NEW YORK, Aug 5 (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is urging corporate leaders to join a U.S.-focused industry group to address risks posed by AI, as corporate America rapidly adopts the developing technology, two sources familiar with ‌the matter said.
Dimon has personally reached out to CEOs of other large and major regional banks and IT companies to enlist them ‌in the initiative, which he is expanding from a group that JPM helped found called the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure, the sources said.
The ACI and Dimon have also communicated with other prospective members in an effort to schedule calls in August to discuss collaboration, the sources said.
The outreach, which started in July, includes over 40 companies spanning financial services, energy, water, utilities, telecommunications, airlines, railroads and other critical infrastructure industries that rely heavily on technology, the sources said. The ACI has not disclosed results of the effort so far.

A royal expert claimed investigative journalist Michael Gillard, who closely followed Prince Harry's Daily Mail lawsuit, has been right throughout. He said Gillard's latest article contains the biggest revelation yet. The expert revealed that the journalist obtained a letter. It claimed that the claimants and legal team already knew key investigator Gavin Burrows had stopped being involved in the case before the lawsuit started.
Tom Sykes shared an update in his latest The Royalist article on Substack on how the key witness opted out of the Daily Mail lawsuit even before it started. The witness in question is private investigator Gavin Burrows, who had been a key supporter of the case. The expert gave his stance on Gillard's reporting in his The Upsetter article, **** led Last of the Fauxhicans, claiming that he has been almost right on every step of the case. Gillard was **** ociated with The Sunday Times' Insight team and The Guardian's investigations unit and had been closely following and covering the case since it started.
Sykes mentioned that Gillard obtained the letter, which was originally received by Mr. Justice Nicklin on January 26. It mentioned that the claimants learned about Burrows' withdrawal in March 2022, when Prince Harry and six high-profile figures filed a lawsuit against the Daily Mail for illegally obtaining information and publishing stories about them. It is to be noted that the case has been won by **** ociated Newspapers Limited (ANL).
The letter stated that Burrows didn't want to testify in the trial following alleged accusations of **** aulting and threatening the lead researcher, Graham Johnson, at his home in South London. Since then, he hasn't been in contact with anyone but told the court through a video link from somewhere in Asia that he is afraid to testify.
Sykes added that the claimants, nevertheless, filed the lawsuit despite knowing that Burrows wouldn't be involved. They had clear proof of withdrawal in March 2023 after Burrows denied the allegations in a witness statement submitted by **** ociated Newspapers. The public had no idea about him stepping back from cooperating until 2025. It became known after his written submission debunking his past statements was released.

Interest rates vary between lenders, and so comparison shopping between home equity loan and line of credit lenders can save you thousands over the life of your loan. For home equity loans, securing the lowest fixed rate matters since you'll be stuck with it for the life of the loan. For HELOCs, locking in the lowest possible introductory rate is key, since your interest rate is likely to fluctuate, even rise, over the loan term.
The average HELOC adjustable rate is 7.23%, according to real estate data **** ytics company Curinos. The 2026 HELOC low was 7.19%, last observed in mid-May.
The national average rate on a fixed-rate home equity loan is 7.36%, up from its 2026 low of 7.31% in late June.
Both rates are based on applicants with a minimum credit score of 780 and a maximum combined loan-to-value ratio (CLTV) of less than 70%.

President Gianni Infantino held emergency talks with other FIFA directors in Morocco on Wednesday, a source told AFP, amid a wave of criticism over his now shelved plan to open the World Cup to private investment.
Infantino has come under increasing pressure, even from within FIFA, over his handling of the proposal, and calls for him to step down have grown since he abandoned it last Saturday.
One of those believed to be at the meeting is FIFA's secretary-general Mattias Grafstrom, whose internal email to staff criticising the plan was leaked on Tuesday.
Infantino, a 56-year-old Swiss lawyer -- who is holding the meeting in FIFA's Africa regional office in Sale close to Rabat -- was in Morocco to celebrate last week's Feast of the Enthronement.
Morocco is to co-host the 2030 World Cup and Moroccan Football chief Fouzi Lekjaa is one of the few to have publicly supported Infantino since the humiliating climbdown.

US stocks steadied on Wednesday after a searing rally as oil declined for the third day in a row amid growing hopes that the Strait of Hormuz could soon reopen.
Futures on the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 (NQ=F) were little changed in premarket trading. Futures for the S&P 500 (ES=F) and Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) both gained slightly after the indexes closed at record highs.
A rise in Asian markets overnight pointed toward a strong open as global markets cheered diplomatic efforts for another peace deal between the US and Iran — no matter how fragile. South Korea's KOSPI (^KS11) index led gains, rising 4%.
On Tuesday, Qatar said a proposal had been drafted between the US and Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for a fifth of the world's oil. Iran is also reportedly considering allowing European countries to remove mines from the strait, adding to confidence that shipping traffic in the region could normalize.
Oil prices fell in premarket trading on the news, with the global benchmark Brent crude (BZ=F) declining 1% to $78 per barrel, while WTI crude oil futures (CL=F), the US benchmark, fell below $75 per barrel.

Olympic champion swimmer Chad le Clos says his home in South Africa was destroyed in a fire a day after he became the most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history.
Le Clos said in a post on his Instagram account that his apartment in Cape Town was one of several in the block to be gutted in a fire on July 30 while he was at the games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The 34-year-old South African won a record 21st Commonwealth Games medal a day before the fire with a bronze in the men's 4×100-metre medley relay.
"On the evening of 30 July, amidst breaking the all-time Commonwealth record, a fire started in my apartment block, which quickly spread to my home," le Clos posted late on Tuesday. "Sadly my home, where I've lived for more than a decade, burnt down and there is nothing left to salvage."
He offered his condolences on the death of an elderly man in the apartment block fire in the oceanside suburb of Sea Point. He said the man had been his neighbour for many years.

Mohamed Salah's next move now appears settled, with Trabzonspor effectively confirming the arrival of the former Liverpool forward after days of growing expectation. As first reported and discussed by Liverpool.com, the Turkish side have moved into the open, releasing travel details before any formal unveiling.
For a player of Salah's stature, the process has been unusually public. Yet the message from Trabzonspor leaves very little room for doubt. Addressing supporters directly, the club said: "Professional footballer Mohamed Salah, with whom we have begun transfer negotiations, will be at Istanbul Atatürk Airport General Aviation Terminal at 12:00 on Wednesday, August 5 (tomorrow)." It added: "The player is scheduled to arrive in Trabzon on the same day in the evening hours. The time and other details regarding the welcome program in Trabzon will be shared with the public through our club's official communication channels during the day."
LFC Website
The wording stops short of a final contract announcement, though in practical terms this is as close to confirmation as it gets. Trabzonspor had already posted that discussions were under way and then followed that with a teaser carrying Egyptian imagery, signalling clearly where the story was heading.
Salah has been a free agent since leaving Liverpool earlier this summer after waiving the final year of his deal. Since then, there has been no shortage of interest or noise around the market. Saudi Arabia remained an obvious talking point because of long-running admiration, while Major League Soccer was mentioned in some quarters as another possible route.
