Shares of Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) have been clobbered since the firm pulled the curtain on its underwhelming quarterly earnings results. The numbers themselves were okay (28% revenue growth is nothing to sneeze at), but compared to the other hyperscaler firms, the results were actually quite uninspiring, with a lot to be desired. Add heavy spend into the equation, and it's not a mystery as to why investors rotated out of the name so violently last week.
One bad quarter doesn't signify that all is lost with Meta, though, especially as the company continues to spend aggressively to catch up in the hyperscaler race while also funneling considerable sums into its superintelligence team, which now actually has something quite impressive to show for its many years of hard work with Muse Spark, a model that might actually convince some users to pay for.

The Mets let a three-run lead slip away before fighting back to beat the Cleveland Guardians, 6-5, in extra innings.
New York rallied in the ninth and tied the game at 5-5 thanks to Brayan Rocchio's fielding error on A.J. Ewing's hard grounder with the bases loaded. Bo Bichette then put the Mets back up with an RBI-single down the right field line in the 10th inning and Daniel Duarte found a way to close it down and get the save.

Carson Benge made a spectacular running catch in the right field corner to end of first inning, and then Guardians CF Petey Halpin smashed into the wall to rob Jared Young of extra bases in the top of the second inning. BOSTON (AP) — Wilyer Abreu homered for the fourth time in three games, Sonny Gray struck out eight in six innings for his 14th win, and the surging Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 4-0 on Wednesday night.
Boston has won seven straight, tied with Atlanta for the longest active streak in the majors, and has won 25 of 28. The Red Sox have also won nine consecutive series, the second-longest streak in franchise history behind an 11-series run in 1912.
Gray (14-2) allowed three hits and walked two, moving into a tie with Philadelphia's Cristopher Sánchez for the major league lead in victories.
Willson Contreras had an RBI single in the first inning that brought Abreu in from second.
Chicago threatened to tie it in the third. Miguel Vargas reached on an infield single to third baseman Caleb Durbin. First baseman Contreras fielded the throw off the bag and then threw to the plate, where catcher Connor Wong tagged Sam Antonacci for the third out.

Seattle — The record will forever show that Max Clark made his Major League debut in Sacramento last weekend.
But his real big-league debut, in an actual big-league stadium, was here Tuesday, at T-Mobile Park, complete with three decks, brighter lights and a retractable roof. And some real big-league amenities. Like when he came to bat in the second inning and Mariners' All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh congratulated him on being called up.
Like, before the game, when his jaw nearly dropped to the ground when he walked out onto the field for the first time and saw one of his childhood idols ****** baseballs in center field — Hall-of-Famer Ichiro Suzuki.
"That was actually like my first, 'Oh my God' moment when I walked on the field yesterday," Clark said. "It was a very surreal moment walking out there and seeing him still taking BP and throwing. Just unbelievable. You see this huge stadium and then in center field, Ichiro is tracking ****** ."
Clark reached into his locker and, with a proud smile on his face, produced his most recent prized possession — a freshly autographed Ichiro game jersey.

DeepSeek gave Alibaba Group Holding Limited (NYSE:BABA) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) a revealing price comparison on August 3. Artificial ***** ysis estimated that DeepSeek's V4-Flash averaged just $0.03 to complete each test in its benchmark suite while scoring 50 on its Intelligence Index, matching Google's Gemini 3.6 Flash.
Three cents is the average cost of completing each benchmark test, not a normal customer query, and the index combines nine coding, reasoning, and workplace tests. More capable models from Moonshot, OpenAI and Anthropic scored at least seven points higher. Still, V4-Flash costs $0.14 per million input tokens and $0.28 per million output tokens. That makes model intelligence cheap enough to pressure pricing for routine enterprise workloads.

Alibaba has two ways to monetize that pressure. Alibaba Cloud's AI Gateway already supports DeepSeek V4 APIs and can route workloads between DeepSeek and Qwen. Alibaba also unveiled its own 2.4-trillion-parameter Qwen3.8-Max on August 3, sending its Hong Kong shares up 7%. Its cloud revenue grew 38% in the March quarter, external cloud revenue rose 40%, and AI products reached 30% of external cloud sales. The catch is severe spending: group revenue rose only 3%, while Alibaba plans to exceed its earlier RMB380 billion three-year AI commitment and is treating margins as secondary.
What that creates is a demanding unit-economics test. Lower inference prices can pull customers into Alibaba Cloud, but revenue compounds only if workload volume grows faster than prices fall and those users also buy storage, networking and databases.

Gabriel Moreno walked into the Diamondbacks clubhouse a little after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, and all of the congratulatory fist ***** ps, hugs and handshakes began.
The Diamondbacks catcher arrived for work fresh off of two days on the paternity list to be with his wife and their newborn daughter, Gianna. He looked happy and rested and was in the Diamondbacks lineup as the designated hitter against the San Diego Padres.
"Everybody's good, my wife's good," Moreno said. "My baby girl is good at home. ... My son, he's a little bit jealous but he's happy."
The timing on the birth worked out well. Moreno was on a long road trip and was concerned he'd have to leave for Arizona on Sunday, Aug. 2, while the Diamondbacks were playing in Cleveland. But he was able to get back home with the team and be with his wife for the birth this week.
"I feel good. Feel really good to go out there and do my job," Moreno said about getting back into playing again.

The surprising news soon gave way to excitement. Miller left San Francisco for a Boston team playing meaningful games and added another intriguing option to an already formidable bullpen.

Day 7 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place Wednesday, August 5.
1. A Change at Center: Cleveland has been rolling with Elgton Jenkins at center, but that changed today, as not only was he sitting out, but Parker Brailsford was sidelined too. Luke Wypler jumped the depth chart to practice with the ones.
2. Watson Finds a Groove: It's a low bar, but the word is that QB Deshaun Watson had his best practice session by far. The stat tracker shows him throwing 7 touchdown passes, but don't be in awe of that, since some were goal line passes in 7 on 7 drills. Nonetheless, he was at least sharp in the basics on the day, which is a step forward.
3. Look Out, Malachi Corley: Last year, we saw WR Malachi Corley have success on jet sweeps. However, in addition to catching everything coming his way, WR Denzel Boston got the carry on both an end around and jet sweep today. To my surprise, it was also noted that he's been taking some reps on the return team too.
4. Growing List: Earlier, we mentioned that two centers missed practice. But the injury list in general is growing (although not everyone is an injury, like TE Joe Royer).

The Commanders receiver corps obviously got better with the Stefon Diggs acquisition. The veteran is a top-tier route runner and a steady producer with a long track record of success. While he's 32 years old, Diggs can still move and make important catches in the clutch.
Head coach Dan Quinn has established a competitive Commanders training camp, but it's safe to say Diggs will eventually slot into the No. 2 receiver slot opposite Terry McLaurin. He's expected play significant time and get targeted a ton, even though he may not be a true every-down player after playing 55% of the offensive snaps in New England last season.
He'll also impact his position group just by joining it. A roster spot just got harder to earn at the position with Terry McLaurin, Diggs and third-round pick Antonio Williams as roster locks. Jaylin Lane's punt-return ability makes him darn-close to one, with maybe two more roster spots available. Fierce battles will be waged for those, among talented individuals.
A few thoughts on how the Diggs addition might impact the receiver corps.
Terry will remain scary while continuing to move around the formation as new coordinator David Blough always intended. McLaurin is the alpha around here, on a long-term deal and one of the longest-tenured players on the Commanders roster. He also has an even-keeled leadership vibe that will hold his position group together and help it improve with all the extra behind-the-scenes work he does.

While the score only ended 2-0 and you might not have been able to tell from just the box score, last night was an exciting one in the Bronx. Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr. debuted and made quite the first impression. With a home run for his first career MLB hit and a couple nice plays in the field, Lombard helped the team to a win over the Cardinals. Now, he and the Yankees will try it again as they go for a series victory.
Following his impressive debut, Lombard is back in the Yankees' lineup, starting at shortstop and hitting eighth. It's actually the exact same lineup as yesterday, with just a change on the mound. Starting tonight for the Yankees will be Will Warren. After briefly being the subject of trade rumors ahead of the deadline, Warren will get the ball, looking to build on the six shutout innings he threw against the Cubs in his last start. Warren owns a 4.14 ERA on the season after that strong outing, striking out 109 batters in 108.1 innings.
As for the Cardinals, they'll send Andre Pallante to the mound. The 27-year-old in his fifth season is enjoying his best year in the majors thus far, owning a 3.72 ERA and surpassing 2 fWAR for the first time. A strikeout machine he is not, as he's punched out just 86 batters in 118.2 innings, but he's been fairly good at keeping the ball in the park with a 0.76 HR/9 and a home run to fly ball ratio under 10 percent. Monday's destructor Alec Burleson will also be back in the lineup after starting last night on the bench.

The Chicago Cubs denied the Los Angeles Dodgers' late comeback attempt on Wednesday, completing a three-game sweep over the World Series champions.
Shohei Ohtani hit his 29th leadoff home run as a Dodger to kick off the game, rising to No. 2 in the Dodgers' all-time leaderboard. He now only trails Mookie Betts by three homers in that ranking, and will certainly catch up to him if he maintains his spot at the top of the order.
Eric Lauer started the game for the Dodgers, looking to maintain his spotless record since becoming a Dodger, but didn't do himself any favors, allowing six runs during his four-inning outing.
The Cubs immediately tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, as Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a leadoff homer of his own. They scored two more times in the bottom of the second inning, as Dansby Swanson and Crow-Armstrong both hit RBI doubles to take the lead.
Crow-Armstrong got to Lauer again in the bottom of the fourth, hitting his second home run of the day—this time scoring two runs to make the score 5-1. Lauer allowed a double to Seiya Suzuki immediately after, and Alex Bregman singled him home to further extend the lead.

Detroit Lions tight end Miles Kitselman, an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee who had seen reps with Detroit's first-team offense in training camp, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his rookie season.
In a corresponding move, wide receiver Tarik Black, who waived waived by the Lions on Aug. 3, was brought back to the roster.
Kitselman (leg) saw opportunities with the first-team offense as TE3 behind Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright while Tyler Conklin worked to return to the field. Conklin, a veteran signed in March, has been dealing with a calf issue he sustained in the spring and hasn't yet practiced in training camp.
Conklin passed his physical Tuesday, according to the league's transaction wire, offering a potential signal for his return. Conklin had a quiet season with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025 but was productive over his three years with the New York Jets (2022-24) before that, with 1,622 yards and seven touchdowns.
Before the Lions, Kitselman played at Hutchinson Community College (2021), Alabama (2022-23) and Tennessee (2024-25). He made 24 starts over two seasons with the Volunteers, catching 48 passes for 554 yards and six touchdowns.

The Seattle Seahawks signed running back TJ Harden to a one-year contract on Wednesday. Ian Rapoport was first on it at 1:34 p.m. PST.
Harden went undrafted in April after a four-year college career with UCLA and SMU. He signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent and participated in their offseason activities until Monday, when they released him to make room for defensive tackle Travis Bell. Cleveland now has five running backs after releasing Harden, but the Seahawks have seven after adding him.
Measuring in at 6'0 2/8", 218, Harden profiles as a physical runner with good contact balance. He was only a three-star recruit out of high school due to limited speed and agility, but still good enough in the competitive California Southern Section to convince UCLA to take a chance on him. Just two years ago, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy praised his ability to execute a well-rounded fullback role, "taking stress off the tight end" in pass protection in addition to running and catching when need be.
Harden won't threaten Jadarian Price's reps as the most explosive back in the offense, but all the short-yardage backs have a new competitor to stave off. If he can stand out in pass protection, he can push the rest of the depth chart during training camp and preseason. If the fullback role is truly in the works, though, maybe it's just a short-term Robbie Ouzts replacement.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Quarterback competitions and learning new offenses have been the norm for Jerry Jeudy during his seven seasons in the NFL.
The Cleveland Browns wide receiver said Wednesday this is at least the fifth year he has been on a team that's figuring out who will be its starting quarterback during training camp.
Even though Jeudy has become frustrated at times with the lack of stability — first with the Denver Broncos and now the Browns — he realizes that who lines up under center is not his decision.
"I just got to deal with it. I can't control who's at quarterback, what happens to the quarterback, anything," Jeudy said. "I do control what I can control and that's running routes getting open and catching the ball, making plays. Other than that, I can't do nothing else but my job."
Jeudy — who has caught passes from 14 starting quarterbacks (seven each with the Browns and Broncos) — further clarified that a recent video on social media showing him holding up four fingers was about the age of his daughter and not an endorsement of Deshaun Watson, who wears that number, becoming Cleveland's starting QB for the Sept. 13 opener at Jacksonville.

Monday's MLB Trade Deadline featured over 30 unique trades. Even so, the name you heard discussed the most in the days that followed was a 21-year-old starting pitcher with only 30 professional starts to his name. Yet, Anthony Eyanson was one of the highest-ranked prospects traded at the deadline and the headliner in a shocking six-player trade that sent Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox.
It's been a quick and surprising path for Eyanson from starting pitcher at LSU to headline prospect in the biggest trade at the MLB deadline.
After transferring from UC-San Diego to LSU in 2025, Eyanson struggled to begin the collegiate season. However, he seemed to find his footing in the final two months of the season and eventually was a key contributor on a Tigers team that won the national championship. At the end of the season, he ranked third in NCAA Division I in both wins (12) and strikeouts (152 in 108 innings), and worked as a reliever to close out LSU's final game in the NCAA regionals and then earned a win in the final games in the super regional and College World Series. Yet, some questions remained about his MLB future given that he had only one season at a top college program.
The Red Sox selected him in the third round of the 2025 MLB Draft, at 87th overall. Then immediately got to work on the key question that many had for Eyanson: his velocity.
"When I was first drafted, it was more so just continuing to live in the zone with all my pitches and really just focus on the velocity for me," revealed Eyanson at this year's Futures Game. "That was a big one...Just working to throw harder and throw everything harder in the zone more often."

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb appears to be taking an unorthodox approach to addressing the issues he endured with drops during the 2025 NFL season.
Lamb was spotted during a Cowboys training camp practice on August 4 catching passes from a JUGS machine with some sort of net or cloth draped over his helmet.
Lamb was able to consistently catch passes from the machine despite his vision being impacted by his head-covering. His counterpart, George Pickens, wasn't able to enjoy similar success when he briefly gave Lamb's drill a try.

In a recent report, A Bola mentioned that Sunderland are exploring a move for Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo this summer. It has been revealed that the Black Cats have initiated contact to acquire the services of the Mozambique wide player this off-season.
Catamo managed to catch the eye at times for Sporting in the previous campaign as he managed to produce a run of impressive displays for them in Liga Portugal. The 25-year-old registered eight goals and five ******* ists in 47 matches for the Portuguese outfit last season in all competitions.
The Mozambique international is currently one of the most talented wingers in Liga Portugal. Therefore, it is no wonder that the Black Cats are trying to get him on board later this year.
Catamo is under contract at the Portuguese club until the summer of 2028, which could make it difficult for Sunderland to sign him on the cheap in this transfer window.

There's a reason the Los Angeles Dodgers were so aggressive in their pursuit of two catchers at the trade deadline. Turns out, breakout Dalton Rushing is dealing with a "partially torn UCL," potentially putting the rest of his season and postseason in jeopardy, manager Dave Roberts confirmed in a radio interview Tuesday.
Roberts said the team discovered Rushing's injury a day before the trade deadline, leading to the Dodgers picking up both Hunter Feduccia and Ben Rortvedt on Monday. Rortvedt was thrust into action immediately, catching Tarik Skubal's first start with the team Tuesday. Feduccia, however, did make an appearance during the contest.
Both players will need to play a significant role for the team down the stretch, as the Dodgers' other starting option at catcher, Will Smith, has been sidelined since June with a neck injury.
Smith, however, is working his way back and is expected to return before the end of the regular season.
Prior to the injury, Rushing was in the midst of a breakout season. With Smith down, Rushing proved to be more than an adequate replacement, slashing .253/.335/.475, with 12 home runs, over 74 games.

Former University of Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner has been named to the Sporting News college football all-decade team for the 2020s.
A key piece of the Bearcats' undefeated regular season and run to the 2021 College Football Playoff, Gardner was named a consensus first-team All-American after allowing just 13 catches for 117 yards. He recorded 35 tackles, three sacks, three interceptions and four pass breakups.
Gardner was drafted by the New York Jets with the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was the 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year and became the first cornerback since the 1970 merger to be named to the AP All-Pro first team in each of his first two seasons.
He currently plays for the Indianapolis Colts, who open the season on Sept. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens. The Colts also host the Cincinnati Bengals on Dec. 27.
Also at cornerback on the all-decade team is former Alabama star Patrick Surtain II, who currently plays for the Denver Broncos.

The Cincinnati Reds sat idle for almost the entire run-up to the August 3rd trade deadline. As the final hour neared, though, they managed to make a few moves at the periphery of their roster to keep the day from being a total shutout.
To Cleveland went 1B/DH Nathaniel Lowe, with 19 year old pitcher Alejandro Rivera coming back to Cincinnati as the return. Rivera is still incredibly far off in terms of a big league opportunity, but he boasts a wealth of talent – not bad considering Lowe came into camp on a minor league deal to begin the year.
Shortly afterwards, the Reds announced they'd picked up $250,000 of international bonus pool money from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for veteran lefty reliever Caleb Ferguson.
Eugenio Suarez did not get moved, nor did starter Brady Singer. The Reds held on to those pending free agents as well as the likes of Pierce Johnson and Brock Burke, too. They even held on to catcher Tyler Stephenson despite the mid-season trade market for catchers being as active as I can remember.

Taylor Trammell of the Houston Astros hit the ball far and did the things a player might do after a home run.
He ran around the bases, stuck out a "No. 1" sign as he headed toward home plate, touched his heart and looked skyward.
There was just one problem, though. It wasn't a home run. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Myles Straw had made a leaping catch at the wall.
Trammell eventually realized that his big dinger was actually a flyout. The camera followed him into the dugout where he threw what looked like a towel in disgust. The Astros eventually lost on Monday, 3-1.
One poster on X who shared the TV feed of Trammell's goof called it "the most embarrassing moment of his life."

The San Francisco 49ers are signing KhaDarel Hodge, an undrafted free agent from the 2018 class. Hodge is another former Raheem Morris player. He spent the previous four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Hodge, 6'2″, 210 pounds, only registered three receptions in 2025 and seven in 2024. He had 14 catches in 2023 for 232 yards, and 13 for 202 in 2022.
Dodge lined up primarily on the outside with the Falcons. While he's likely nothing more than a camp body, that nugget is important as it would allow De'Zhaun Stribling, or maybe Deebo Samuel, or whichever player they want to focus on getting more slot reps.
It's going to be a critical couple of weeks for players like Jacob Cowing and Junior Bergen. Both are fighting for that final roster spot at wideout. They'll need to show they can win inside and outside. It shouldn't be ruled out that if both excel, Christian Kirk might be the odd man out, even if it's because of an injury. It also helps, in Cowing's case, that he has the upper hand at punt returner — for now, at least.
Demarcus Robinson has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the injuries at wide receiver. He went from "will he even make the roster" to potentially playing starter-level snaps. Funny how things change in a week.
We'll see if Hodge turns into anything more than relief during practice for the six or so receivers slated to make the roster.

The Florida State Seminoles held their first scrimmage of fall camp on Tuesday night in Doak Campbell Stadium as they prepare for the New Mexico State Aggies and the 2026 season. While Mike Norvell was pleased with starter Ashton Daniels, it was not all good news in the quarterback room.
Norvell revealed that Malachi Marshall is dealing with a "slight injury" and did not play, according to Liam Rooney of the Tallahassee Democrat. Norvell did not seem to think it was a major injury, saying he hopes he will be available for their second scrimmage on Sunday.
Marshall, who recently joined the team, is competeting with Kevin Sperry to be FSU's primary backup behind Daniels. A JUCO product, he is coming off an excellent season at Iowa Western C.C., leading them to a national championship and a 12-1 record. He was named the JUCO Offensive Player of the Year after he completed 63% of his passes for 2,750 yards, 33 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
While he has a great ability to throw the football, he has plenty of catching up to do after missing out on spring practice. At 168 pounds, he also needs to keep adding weight to survive the grind of a season.
Sperry was able to show what he can do in the scrimmage, hitting freshman wide receiver Jasen Lopez for a big gain, Norvell said, before adding that there were some things to "continue to work on" when addressing Sperry. He played in three games for FSU last season, completing 12 of his 17 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow also out-dueled Yankees general manager Brian Cashman ahead of Monday's MLB trade deadline, acquiring catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles.
Add all that up and you get a Boston ballclub that has leapfrogged the boys from the Bronx in Will Leitch's latest power rankings for MLB.com.
He has the Red Sox ranked sixth overall, up one spot from the pre-deadline rankings.
"Whether or not Craig Breslow feels vindicated by how the Red Sox have come on in the last month-plus, it's obvious this team is going all-in at this point: When he returns from the IL, Adley Rutschman is exactly what this Red Sox team needs. This year … and next year," Leitch wrote Wednesday.

With NFL training camps fully ramped up and the preseason on the horizon, there is no shortage of various quick-hit highlight videos popping up on social media. This certainly stands true for the Dallas Cowboys, and one specific training camp drill done by CeeDee Lamb quickly grabbed the attention of fans league-wide.
Wide receivers, in particular, have been known to follow specific routines in their daily preparation for the season. Some may have a set number of ***** they catch each day, while others utilize unique drills to help work on catching passes in coverage. But for Lamb, his drill included a large white net covering his entire face/helmet while catching passes, as Cowboys reporter Patrik Walker first revealed.
It was unquestionably a unique (and I'd go out on a limb and guess very rarely seen) approach to a pass-catching drill. It also sparked some questions and speculation about exactly why Lamb was using the net as part of his training.
While it hasn't been confirmed, the popular theory is that Lamb took this approach to address the sunlight issue that's been a topic of conversation in late-afternoon games at AT&T Stadium. That thought process makes sense, as the sun directly in players' eyes has caused a few notable issues in previous seasons.
In a bit of positive news for Cowboys fans who have been bothered by this, owner Jerry Jones told Sam Gannon of KDFW Fox 4 that he's giving "a thought" to tinting the windows, which would be a significant step toward addressing the sunlight issue during games.

With the Boston Red Sox deciding to move on from many of their top prospects in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles for Adley Rutschman, there aren't many questions that now need to be answered at the catcher position for the organization.
The Red Sox have put themselves in a very good position behind the plate, and the hope is that Rutschman eventually figures some things out.
He's proven throughout parts of his career that he can be the best catcher in baseball, but there have also been some struggles in recent seasons. He's also dealing with an injury at the moment, the biggest concern for the Red Sox right now.
Beyond that, however, there's one question the Red Sox eventually have to answer, and it's coming a lot sooner than most fans probably realize. Rutschman, who has yet to sign an extension, is set to hit the free-agent market at the end of next season. That's something ESPN recently brought up as a potential problem.
