Burned-out employees are often easy to spot. But what about people who some workplace experts describe as "rusting out" on the job?
A survey by scheduling software provider Deputy of hourly workers across the hospitality, retail, healthcare and other sectors found that many people are languishing in their jobs and are functionally less productive than their employers expect.
Roughly 15% of those polled reported feeling merely "OK" about their jobs, a sign that researchers say can lead to lackluster performance, Star Levandowski, senior vice president of business and people operations at Deputy, told CBS News. "We see that as an early indicator to rust out, when people are not feeling challenged enough," she said.
Think of a mechanical tool that's shiny and sharp when new, but that can get rusty over time if left hanging unused.
"If you feel like you're not being used to the best of your abilities, you feel like you're just hanging out, or rusting out," Levandowski said.

Lacan, 22, has driven with Angloma on long car rides, helping adjust to the rules of the road and of women's basketball in America. She provides a trusting voice in an unfamiliar world. It's made for an easier adjustment than most have attempted.

The San Diego Padres have been picking up the pace recently on offense, although scoring runs hasn't quite been their strong suit this season. In their bid to bolster their offense, they took a flier on left fielder Austin Hays, someone who has spent the majority of the 2026 season on the injured list due to a hamstring strain and a calf strain and was recently put on waivers by the Chicago White Sox.
Hays cleared waivers, and the Padres picked him up — thrusting him into action on Sunday as pinch-hitter in a clash against the Houston Astros. Hays came into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning to pinch hit for designated hitter Gavin Sheets, and he immediately proved this move correct, as he went yard on a 2-1 count to push San Diego's lead over Houston to 7-2.
The 31-year-old has always had some solid pop, so the Padres knew that bringing Hays in did not pose much of a risk when the team needs some more offense. At Hays' peak (back in 2021), he smacked 22 home runs and slugged .461 on the year, providing solid value for a corner outfielder.
The Padres are facing some stiff competition for a postseason spot, so every win matters from hereon out. They managed to close out the game against the Astros and take a 7-2 victory on Sunday, as San Diego's pitching corps managed to shut the door and hold Houston scoreless from the third inning onwards.

Returning from an injury is always emotional, especially one as severe as Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell suffered back in December of 2024.
Dell tore his ACL, MCL and LCL, along with dislocating his kneecap and suffering significant meniscus damage, which required multiple surgeries and forced him to miss the entire 2025 season while rehabbing. For 18 months, fans pondered if the forrmer third-round pick would ever return to full form.
Fast-forward to Wednesday and Dell was back in training camp. While he is not working out in full capacity, his participation in camp is a positive sign for his availability for the 2026 season and beyond.
As much as the physical recovery was challenging, Dell mentioned the internal struggle as a focal issue, too.
"I'll say mentally, it's just about trusting that the work you put in prior to going out there to do those things," Dell said. "Prior to going out there to put your foot in the ground, trusting the process with the training staff and what they had set out for me so that when I got out here I wasn't scared and I was talking to my doctor and I was just asking him questions and he was just telling me to let loose, trust it and be you because it's 100% stable. When he told me that, I just came out and was putting my foot in the ground. I didn't care about it, I tried not to think about it, because during your process the mental aspect of it is the hardest thing you have to get over. If I went out there iffy about what I'm doing, then I probably would never be able to come back to what I want to be. I was just out there, just trusting it, putting my foot in the ground, trying to be explosive and it's working in my favor."

Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of the England Lions, ending his tenure with the national development side less than two years after taking charge.

Flintoff, who began the role in September 2024, played a key role in reshaping the Lions programme and creating an environment aimed at developing England's next generation of players and coaches. His departure comes as he prepares to take up his new role as head coach of Sydney Thunder in Australia's Big Bash League.

The former England all-rounder said he had taken pride in watching young players develop during his time with the Lions but had decided it was time to move on.

"Unfortunately I've made the decision to step away from my role with the Lions. Not only have I enjoyed my time having the opportunity to work with the best young cricketers in the country, but have taken great pride in seeing them develop," Flintoff said in an ECB statement.

"I'd like to thank the coaches and staff for all their passion, tireless work and support they give everyday. In particular, Ed Barney who I've loved working with and was so lucky to have as a performance director, and obviously Rob (Key) for trusting me with one of the most important roles in English cricket."

Flintoff added: "I can't wait to get started with the [Sydney] Thunder later in the year and see where coaching takes me."
Flintoff's appointment marked a significant step in his return to cricket after the serious accident he suffered while filming for the television programme Top Gear.

During his stint with the Lions, the 48-year-old was central to establishing what the ECB described as a "world-class Lions environment", with his work extending beyond the players to coaches at different stages of their careers.

Ed Barney, ECB men's performance director, praised Flintoff's contribution and credited him with transforming the development programme.

"Fred has helped to transform the Lions environment into a programme that has had a major impact on young players. By creating an environment that both supports and pushes excellence at all times he has helped bring forward a new generation of young players," Barney said.

"Coaches have also flourished alongside him, whether early in their coaching journey or with decades of experience, and he has consistently maximised the expertise around the group."

Flintoff had initially been expected to combine his Lions responsibilities with his Sydney Thunder commitments, with the ECB allowing him to miss two four-day matches in South Africa during the winter because of his BBL duties. He has now opted to leave the England role entirely.
Flintoff's departure comes shortly after England men's managing director Rob Key publicly praised his work with the Lions, saying the ECB was "incredibly fortunate to have him".

The Lions are scheduled to face a Professional County Club Select XI against Pakistan Men in a four-day match at Beckenham, beginning on Wednesday, August 12.

The New England Patriots held tryouts for two punters during rookie and mandatory minicamp this offseason. Neither was signed.
Instead, the team entered training camp with confidence in Bryce Baringer.
The 27-year old is coming off a season in which he punted a career-low 51 times in the regular season before a busy playoff run. Baringer continued to showcase his big leg by again eclipsing the 70-yard longest punt mark and recording a career-best 4.41-second average hang time, but remained hampered by the occasional mishit — such as a 22-yard punt in Week 13 against the Giants.
That's why Baringer's offseason focus was centered on one thing.
"I want to be more consistent," he said. "No. 2, big emphasis was hang time and distance. Kind of having that relationship. Just knowing what I'm capable of doing, trusting myself, my process. Like I said, [Jeremy Springer], [Tom Quinn], [Mike Vrabel], they all know what I'm capable of. It's just going out and being able to do it, and just trusting myself wholeheartedly."

The Zambia women's national team have failed to reach the knockout stage of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations and will thus miss out on competing in the 2027 women's World Cup.
Despite beating regional rival Malawi 2-1 in their final WAFCON group-stage match Wednesday in Rabat, Morocco, the Copper Queens were eliminated after Nigeria defeated Egypt in the other Group C match. Zambia was eliminated based on the total number of goals scored among the top three teams.
As a result, WAFCON debutants Malawi have reached the knockout stage of the continental tournament and kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup.
The final minutes of both fixtures were climactic. Malawi, Nigeria (who are 10-time and reigning WAFCON champions) and Zambia were all level on six points as both games progressed. This eliminated the head-to-head deciding factor between them in favor of the number of goals each of those teams scored against each other.
Malawi upset Nigeria with a 3-2 victory in their first WAFCON match on July 28, thrusting the Super Falcons in a nervy third-place position in their group following Zambia's 6-0 victory over Egypt the same day. Nigeria steadied themselves on Aug. 1 with a crucial 1-0 victory over Zambia, but still finished the second matchday in third place behind their opponents. Elena Khoziaeva's story is basically a masterclass in staying somewhere because it's actually good. Khoziaeva, CFA, shared her journey from Belarus to a Houston master's degree, from walking into Bridgeway in 1998 as partner number six to 25-plus years later as the Co-CIO of a firm now running roughly $5 billion on the latest Behind the Ticker episode with host Brad Roth, founder and CIO of Thor Funds. What makes Bridgeway drastically different than your average shop was baked in from the very beginning of the firm. It gives away half its profits to a foundation fighting genocide, caps pay so no partner earns more than 7x the lowest-paid employee, and runs on a research culture where being wrong in a meeting isn't a career risk but half the point. Khoziaeva calls the approach systematic rather than quantitative, but it all comes down to trusting the process, being open to arguments internally to shape better strategies, and not getting defensive when the model's wrong.
Then there's BSVO, the EA Bridgeway Omni Small-Cap Value ETF, one of the more interesting products in a crowded category. It's got a real 15-year track record (born as a mutual fund in 2010, wrapped as an ETF in 2023), holds roughly 600 names instead of the usual sub-200, and deliberately goes smaller and cheaper than the Russell 2000 Value benchmark, with an average market cap under $3 billion. The bigger picture Khoziaeva paints is a valuation gap that's stretched further than usual, with small value trading around a 14-15 P/E while large growth sits in the 30s, and the book-to-market gap versus the S&P 500 is nearly double its historical norm. Her line for advisors is memorable: "the tighter the spring, the more powerful the release"and Q1 2026 proved it, with small value up 5% while large growth dropped 10%. Her advice isn't to time it, though but to hold the allocation, stay systematic, and let the spring do what springs do.

The narrative on social media surrounding the Texas Rangers never matched what happened at the trade deadline. They made only one minor deal, trusting that the team can surge as is.
ARLINGTON — A good rule of thumb for life in general is not to believe everything cranked out on social media. That is especially so in the final two days before the annual MLB trade deadline and as things pertained this year to the Texas Rangers.
The deadline passed at 5 p.m. Monday with the Rangers staying largely dormant. Beginning on Sunday morning and continuing into Monday morning, though, the buzz was that the Rangers were going to be deadline sellers because of what happened over the weekend in Houston.
The sale was on, one national expert said. Another said the Rangers were open to moving all players on the team. It all turned out to be an echo chamber of bad information.
The only move the Rangers made Monday was an afternoon trade of infielder Josh Smith and minor-league pitcher Josh Stephan to the Blue Jays for left-hander Adam Macko. The lack of moves wasn't for a lack of effort, dreary-eyed club officials said.

Barcelona's midfield situation has changed considerably over the last few weeks. Frenkie de Jong's injury has left Hansi Flick with fewer reliable options in the double pivot, while Marc Bernal is still returning from a lengthy layoff and cannot immediately be expected to carry a full workload.
Pedri remains an automatic starter and Gavi has proven that he can play alongside him, but the depth behind them suddenly looks far less secure than it did at the beginning of the summer.

Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks was finally able to put on his pads at an NFL training camp.
Tuesday's session proved to be another showcase for Brooks, who is progressing through his first healthy offseason as a pro. The 23-year-old shined this morning, putting his speed and suddenness on display—as he did during spring workouts.
He was asked about the session afterwards.
"It felt good. It felt good to be back out there," Brooks stated. "I'm just trusting the process that the trainers and coaches have for me. And just ultimately, believing in myself throughout the whole rehab process. And it was a blessing to be back out there."
Between two ACL tears to his right knee, one from college and one from his rookie campaign, Brooks has been limited to just three games since being drafted back in 2024. After being sidelined for the entirety of the 2025 campaign, the former second-round pick seems likely to factor into the Carolina offense from the jump—even drawing whispers of earning a featured role down the line.

Spain lifted the trophy, Lionel Messi's era reached its closing chapter, and FIFA walked away richer than ever. From record-breaking attendance and soaring television audiences to unprecedented ticket prices and growing commercialization, the 2026 FIFA World Cup may ultimately be remembered as the tournament that changed football forever.
Spain did it.
Luis de la Fuente's side defeated Argentina in a one-sided final that somehow stretched into extra time before Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute to secure La Furia's second FIFA World Cup. The scoreline hardly reflected the dominant victory. Spain outshot Argentina 20-3, controlled nearly 70% of possession, and dictated virtually every minute of the match.
This Spain team is difficult to describe. At times the football was beautiful, yet it also felt cold, clinical, and almost mechanical. Every movement seemed rehearsed, every pass calculated. There was elegance and precision, but often little of the emotion, grit, or raw intensity that has traditionally defined football's greatest champions. Spain dismantled France in the semis and Argentina in the final by trusting the same formula, and there was no reason to stray from it.
In many ways, it's ironic that the polished, easy-to-consume product put forth by this Spanish side ended up winning a World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. There is little controversy, little mystery, and even less that demands endless debate. Spain is easy to understand, easy to market, and easy to celebrate, much like the consumer culture surrounding the tournament itself.

India fast bowler Kranti Gaud said earning a place on the iconic Lord's honours board had been her personal target from the very start of the one-off Women's Test, after her match-winning performance guided India to a historic 270-run victory over England.

Gaud was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 5/37 in England's first innings to hand India a decisive 115-run lead. She followed it up with figures of 2/54 in the second innings as England were bowled out for 186 while chasing an imposing target of 457. Her seven-wicket haul earned her the Player of the Match award.

Reflecting on the achievement, Gaud admitted the milestone had seemed unimaginable while growing up but became a clear objective once the Test got underway.

"Growing up, I never imagined something like this would happen. But from the day this Test match began, I told myself that I wanted to get my name on the honours board," she said during the post-match presentation.

The young pacer credited her success to sticking to the basics and trusting the plans laid out by the coaching staff.

"My approach is very simple. I just focus on my line and length. Whatever the coaches have told me, I try to follow that by hitting the same line and length consistently. That's what I was thinking about with every ball."

A Democratic senator on Saturday alleged that whistleblowers have detailed several problems stemming from rushed or improper reconstruction of the Kennedy Center, adding a new layer to the travails of the arts complex as President Donald Trump tried to seize control of it and its name.
Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island said in a release on Saturday that he had received a whistleblower disclosure from the Government Accountability Project, a nonprofit whistleblower protection group, alleging that "the Center rushed a series of renovations driven by the President's aesthetic whims and his desire to star in a series of televised events in December."
"The Center's subservience to the President's desires and its corner-cutting contracting practices have resulted in steel columns that are rusting through fresh paint, a reflecting pool that may have to be torn out and rebuilt, and a brand-new bathroom floor torn out over an offending tile color," Whitehouse continued. "This is waste, and it treats a national memorial to President Kennedy as if it were a private renovation project."
The Kennedy Center did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump seized control of the arts and culture venue, named after former President John F. Kennedy, at the beginning of his second term. Trump ousted the center's prior leadership and replaced it with a Board of Trustees that named him chairman and added his name to the building.

When speaking with Caitlin Clark before Wednesday night's game against the Los Angeles Sparks, she wasn't interested in talking about awards or individual accomplishments. Every NFL player eventually loses the battle against time. It doesn't matter how many Pro Bowls they've earned or championships they've won. At some point, age always catches up, though the Philadelphia Eagles have certainly seen their fair share of exceptions. Jason Kelce was a freak of nature. So is Lane Johnson, but for the most part, explosiveness fades, and recovery takes longer. The game becomes just a little harder than it once was.
Johnson, however, seems determined to test that theory for as long as possible. As the Eagles prepare for another season with championship aspirations, he enters Year 14 still performing at a level most offensive linemen spend an entire career chasing. It's become so commonplace that it's easy to overlook just how remarkable his sustained excellence has been. He remains every bit as important to Philadelphia's success despite being one of the league's oldest starters.
Most offensive linemen begin showing signs of decline well before reaching their mid-30s. Johnson has largely ignored that timeline. Even while battling injuries last season, he continued grading among the NFL's better right tackles, excelling in both pass protection and the running game. His athleticism remains evident. His technique remains elite and, perhaps most importantly, his understanding of the position continues to separate him from younger opponents.
That combination has allowed him to evolve rather than simply survive. Johnson no longer relies solely on overwhelming athletic traits. He wins with experience, anticipation, leverage, and an unmatched understanding of how to counter opposing pass rushers before they ever make their move. Those qualities don't always show up in highlight reels, but they help explain why the Eagles continue trusting him with one of the league's most demanding positions.

David Moyes’ use of his squad last season came under plenty of scrutiny, and for good reason.
He wasn’t trusting enough of enough players, and in the end, Everton suffered because of it, as fatigue and the general wear and tear after the rigours of a long Premier League season came back to bite key performers such as Iliman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in that dismal run-in.
There’s two ways to look at it: Either it was all on Moyes, or some (or even most) of the players brought in last summer simply weren’t ready to make an impact. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but at the end of the day, it’s a manager’s job to get them ready over the course of a campaign.
Big pre-seasons are needed from the likes of Tyler Dibling, Merlin Röhl and Harrison Armstrong, while Adam Aznou needs to be sent out on loan as soon as possible to get regular minutes, but Everton’s two new additions suggest that for all the frustrations with Moyes’ squad management, promising young players are still open to working under the Scot.

Today, the East Anglian coast is a largely peaceful sight, but from summer 1940 it was a place of frenzied construction.
"It was frantic throughout July, August and September in 1940, as they constructed defences as fast as they could to block an invasion all along the UK coast," said Dave Thurlow, who works at the RSPB reserve north of Sizewell in Suffolk.
Very little had been done to build defences around the United Kingdom until after the British Expeditionary Force was forced to evacuate from the beaches of Dunkirk.

Arijon Ibrahimović is set to sign a new contract with Bayern Munich, according to reports from Transfermarkt. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is expected to put pen to paper next week after deciding to continue his development at the German champions.
The report states that Ibrahimović's current deal, which runs until 2027 with an option for a further year, will be replaced by a new contract running until 2028.
The decision comes despite significant interest in the Germany Under-21 international following his productive loan spell at Heidenheim. Clubs including Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, Freiburg, Augsburg, Villarreal, Brighton & Hove Albion and Hull City were all reportedly monitoring his situation.
According to Transfermarkt, the decisive factor was a series of positive and trusting conversations with Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany. The Belgian is said to have outlined a clear sporting perspective for Ibrahimović, convincing the youngster that his future lies in Munich.
Ibrahimović also strengthened his case during the closing weeks of last season. His standout display against Bayern in Heidenheim's dramatic 3-3 draw at the Allianz Arena, where he registered a goal contribution, reportedly reinforced the club's desire to keep him. He followed that performance with another two goal contributions against Köln a week later.

Things have seemed somewhat quiet lately for former Duke star and ***** istant coach Amile Jefferson since moving from Durham to Boston to be an ***** istant with the Celtics, but that's from the outside.
He's an ***** istant. By definition, he's a background figure for the team, at least as far as the public is concerned. That will change soon, however.
When Boston starts Summer League play starts on July 10, they're entrusting their roster to Coach Jefferson.
Among other things, this will be their first time seeing draftee Chris Cenac on the court, and Jefferson might be the ideal guy to mentor him.

Clemsonfootball's wait for a decision from one of its top remaining recruiting targets will last a little longer.
Four-star safety Seth Williams announced Saturday that he is delaying his commitment and will no longer reveal his college choice on July 3 as originally planned. The standout defensive back did not provide a new announcement date, saying only that he is trusting God's timing as he continues through the recruiting process.
Williams has become one of the Tigers' biggest priorities in the 2027 class, and his recruitment has taken an unusual path. He verbally committed to Clemson during an unofficial visit in March, but after returning home, he decided he had acted too quickly. Williams informed the coaching staff the following day that he wanted to reopen his recruitment, with his decommitment becoming public a short time later.
Since then, the race has narrowed considerably. Although several programs were involved at different points, Clemson and Georgia are now the only schools left in the mix. Williams took official visits to both campuses, while planned trips to Ohio State and Florida never happened.
The talented defensive back recently praised both coaching staffs, pointing to the stability and success of Dabo Swinney and Kirby Smart as major reasons the two programs remain under consideration.

That makes sense, since he wasn't even entered into the draft. LeBron James' son just completed his first year on campus at the University of Arizona.
Bryce didn't play a single second of action for the Wildcats, as they wanted to keep him off the court and redshirt him to preserve this year of his eligibility.
He also has stayed put, not entering the transfer portal and instead trusting that he can make it at Arizona.

PepsiCo Beverages US CMO Mark Kirkham credits a focus on organic social media with helping drive the brand's engagement to a 20-year high. Working with VaynerMedia, the company has increased its content output fivefold. Kirkham says the approach requires trusting internal teams and allowing social media algorithms to determine what resonates.

Florida State was able to land four-star defensive lineman Sam LeJeune on Wednesday. He is the top-ranked prospect to commit to the Seminoles in the 2027 class.
LeJeune's pledge didn't just make fans of the program jump for joy. It got an extremely positive reaction from several other committed players as well, per Matt LaSerre of Warchant. One of them was four-star edge Anthony Cavallaro, who reaffirmed that he shut down his recruitment on Wednesday.
“Man, it’s amazing to see that so many recruits are trusting and pouring into what FSU is building,” Cavallaro said. “I was watching the live stream of his commitment, and I was so pumped because we finally got that big interior D-Lineman that we needed. But I’m just excited to get that work in with him and the other recruits this coming January.”
The 6-foot-3, 280-pounder isn't the only commitment that FSU has gotten this week. On Monday, three-star linebacker CJ Ohuabunwa chose the Seminoles. His reaction to LeJeune's commitment was very detailed.
“Big time!! He’s an amazing player, and that’s the type of guy as a linebacker that you want in front of you,” Ohuabunwa said. “A guy who is going to make big-time plays but also allows me to do the same.”
