Herbert Blomstedt, who headed the San Francisco Symphony from 1985-95 and led orchestras in Scandinavia and Germany during a career over seven decades, died Wednesday. He was 99.
Blomstedt died at his home in Gothenburg, Sweden, according to his management agency, KünstlerSekretariat am Gasteig.
His final performance was on May 15 with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Hall, when he entered the stage in a wheelchair and struggled to get through Gustav Mahler's Ninth Symphony, which halted for several minutes during the third movement.

In-N-Out Burger may be expanding to three Southern states, the company's CEO said this month in a sit-down interview shared on social media.
The chain may be headed to Arkansas, Mississippi and Oklahoma, CEO Lynsi Snyder said in an interview with actor Terry Crews that In-N-Out shared on Facebook on Oct. 22 and on its website.
Snyder said the move to Texas in 2011 felt "very right," and that other nearby states may be next.
"There's some other states … that could be on the way," she said. "If you look on the map, you've got Texas, there's Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma. There's some states there that are possibilities."
She also hinted at the chain having a location in New Mexico.

Married, college-educated homeowners make up about 20% of families but nearly 75% of retirement-account millionaires.
Nearly a third of retirement-account millionaires are families headed by someone ages 55 to 64.
Only about 7% of U.S. families have $1 million or more in retirement accounts. But that milestone is much more common among families that share several key traits.
Among the roughly 9.4 million families with $1 million or more in retirement accounts, about 97% own their homes, 84% are headed by someone with a bachelor's degree, and 61% are in the top 10% by income. Sebastian Cheeks has spearheaded one of the best defenses in the nation this season. Fresh off the franchise's first World Series victory, the Milwaukee Brewers are reading to celebrate with all of Wisconsin. After beating the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 on Wednesday, Brewers returned to Milwaukee on Thursday, and made their first major stop at the Green Bay Packers' primetime matchup against the Carolina Panthers.
During a break after the first quarter of Thursday's game, several players emerged from the tunnel at Lambeau Field with the World Series trophy held high, earning a roar from the Packers crowd.
The Brewers' appearance at Lambeau was slightly spoiled by right fielder Sal Frelick, who joined ESPN's "Sportscenter" for an interview while on the bus to Green Bay. Frelick was candid about how the celebrations had been going since beating the Rays on Wednesday.

Reading Women fought back from 3-1 down at half-time to claim a thrilling 5-3 victory over Chesham United at The Meadow on Sunday.
Chesham made a flying start, with Holly Fitzgerald and Ruby Slade scoring within two minutes of each other to put the hosts 2-0 ahead. Alice Curr pulled one back for the Royals, but United restored their two-goal advantage before the break when Henrietta Cunnison headed home from a corner to make it 3-1 at the break.

Why It Matters: Unquestionably the most important thing that happened for Kraft on Sunday night was that he avoided another knee injury as he headed to the blue medical tent after taking a low hit. He was able to return, however, which is big news for the Packers and Kraft owners. Why It Matters: Unquestionably the most important thing that happened for Kraft on Sunday night was that he avoided another knee injury as he headed to the blue medical tent after taking a low hit. He was able to return, however, which is big news for the Packers and Kraft owners. While the talented tight end still hasn't gotten fully back to form, he's one of the three pillars of the passing game with Christian Watson and Matthew Golden, and as those two continue to command attention, it should open things up for Kraft. He photographed John Paul Getty III during his time in Rome and trod on bullets on his way to the scene where the former prime minister Aldo Moro was kidnapped in 1978. Non-GAAP earnings per share rose to $1.74 from $1.00, and CEO Jim Anderson noted that for the full year, that measure grew more than twice as fast as revenue. Management guided to revenue of $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, and Anderson says AI data centers are increasingly moving from copper to optical links.
Now look at the two versions of profit. Coherent's non-GAAP earnings came to $1.74 per share, but under GAAP the figure was $1.19. The gap comes from items management leaves out, including stock-based pay, amortization on acquired intangibles, and restructuring and integration costs. Some of those costs are non-cash, but they are real, and anyone anchoring on the higher figure is skipping them.
