West Brom boss James Morrison says he remains hopeful of adding further new signings before the transfer window closes, with a deal for Manchester United midfielder Toby Collyer understood to be close.
The Baggies have already been active in the market this summer, bringing in winger Kareem Tunde earlier this week.
But Morrison is keen to further strengthen his squad.

The 2026 wide receiver draft class wasn't filled with transcendent players, but that's not going to stop us from grabbing some high upside rookies this year. In dynasty, I want my rookie running backs to get on the field quickly and show that they can be fantasy relevant sooner than later. With receivers, I'm willing to take a longer look but I still don't want them to be buried on the depth chart going into their rookie season.
I like this group of receivers. It's been fun watching them throughout training camp and preseason. And during that time, we've seen a few shine and raise their profile. Below, I'll go through some of the receivers making a move toward playing time this season and hopefully secure a spot on your fake teams for years to come.
The Ravens need help at receiver behind Zay Flowers, which pushed them to draft Lane in the third round and Elijah Sarrat in the fourth. So far, Lane has showed well in camp. He gets compared to Michael Thomas, with his sure hands and big frame. Rashod Bateman is the current WR2, but off field issues and just an inability to consistently put up numbers has that No. 2 job up for grabs.
Kansas City needs help at wide receiver. Rashee Rice is good, but he's not a strong WR1. Add in his off-field issues and injury concerns, and there is room for another receiver to rise in the depth chart. Allen could be that guy or an approximation of that guy. He's played well in preseason and has gotten plenty of praise from beat writers. I'm willing to take him ahead of his ADP due to his opportunity and offensive environment in KC.
The Dolphins are in full tank mode, but they'll still play football games and the players want to win. They lack any veteran wide receivers worth a darn, so their rookies, Bell and Douglas have plenty of room to win playing time. Douglas has been consistent this summer, already winning a starting job come Week 1. Bell is coming off a knee injury, but has finally returned to practice and shed his no-contact jersey. Both receivers could win starting jobs with Jalen Tolbert and Malik Washington as their main competition.

The California Redwoods underwent a youth movement during the 2025 season. The team didn't have to endure a rebuild, however; six first-year players made immediate impacts and helped the team advance to the semifinals of the PLL playoffs.
After victories in four consecutive games, the run stopped there with a 12-7 loss to the Denver Outlaws.
At the postgame press conference, co-captain Brian Tevlin made a strong proclamation.
"We're going to be back next year," Tevlin said. "We're going to be better next year. We're going to be more mature. Hopefully, that shows when we're eventually back in this situation and we have our best stuff instead of our worst stuff."
Josh Balcarcel, one of the rookies, was crushed by the result and didn't rewatch the game for a few days, but he grew curious. He yearned to understand what went wrong, and revisiting the game taught several lessons he could learn from.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler says there is a chance either Georginio Rutter or Jack Hinshelwood could return to the squad for Sunday's clash with Chelsea, although he admitted the latter is less likely to be ready.
Both players have been nursing injuries, but Hurzeler is hopeful Rutter can make the squad.
"With both, we will have to be patient," Hurzeler said. "There might be a chance for one of them to be in the squad [against Chelsea].
"With Gini, I see a higher chance. With Hinshelwood, for the weekend it might be too close, but we will find good solutions."

At the beginning of this week it did seem that exciting young defender Stephen Mfuni would leave Manchester City to spend the 2026-27 season on loan with Coventry City. A move to the newly promoted side would have provided Mfuni with the opportunity to get a taste of the Premier League if he could earn a position in Frank Lampard's lineup. However, Mfuni's loan move to Coventry fell through as reported by Jack Johnson for TalkSport. It did seem to be a waiting game to find out where Mfuni would play his football this season. Now, it has been reported that Mfuni's loan move to Coventry could be back on which is good news for Manchester City and the young defender.
Stephen Mfuni could end up joining Coventry City on loan after all, according to Tom Hancock of TalkSport. Furthermore, Hancock reports that City had held talks with Sheffield United and Swansea over a potential loan move to the Championship for young defender. However, it looks like Mfuni may now move to a Premier League club instead. It is further reported that Coventry City are eager to strengthen their squad after being promoted back to the Premier League. Adding Mfuni to Frank Lampard's squad will give them another defensive option to aid their cause to stay in the Premier League this season.
Hopefully, Stephen Mfuni does wind up completing a loan move to Coventry City. Spending a season in the Premier League should fast track Mfuni's development. Especially if he can become a regular contributor for Frank Lampard's side. Also, Manchester City and Mfuni will be glad to have a resolution found as to where Mfuni will play this season.
What Manchester City and Mfuni wouldn't want is for Mfuni's short-term future to remain unresolved. That would be the worst-case scenario and it could have forced City to be scrambling to find a suitable club for Mfuni to head out on loan to. If Coventry City have reignited their interest in Mfuni as reported, this scenario may have been avoided.
Stephen Mfuni could be heading out on loan to Coventry City after all. Hopefully, the loan move goes through and Mfuni returns Manchester City ready to take the next step in what promises to be strong career for the 18-year-old centre-back.

Well, that was a bit of a damp squib of a "match one", wasn't it?
It was always going to be a bit "meh" for me, to be honest – I erroneously made arrangements to have lunch with some old friends on Saturday (family pals, not footy mates), which I was really looking forward to and enjoyed a lot, but I knew would probably overrun. Before a ball was kicked, I'd settled for maybe seeing some of the second half, and hopefully seeing us do well.
As it transpired, I failed as a so-called "fan" to greater depths than the lads did – I couldn't get any visibility of the match until about ten minutes from the end, when a family member shared a rather dodgy internet link. By the time that got working, I watched Jack Clarke bend it into the bottom corner (as we have seen him do so many times), and that was that.
After only seeing the tail end and watching us lose to an "ex", the whole weekend took a bit of a nosedive in terms of football feelings for me. I still haven't watched the highlights even now (Tuesday morning as I draft this), such has been the underlying indifference around the fixture and my disappointment.
But when I woke up yesterday morning, I thought I'd take a look at what this may mean based on last season's first matches… and while it's a bit of a mixed bag, it's far from the Armageddon some online bed-wetters have already made it out to be.

Self-proclaimed diehard Cincinnati Reds fan Kirk Herbstreit, who grew up in Centerville, Ohio, appeared Aug. 27 on ESPN's "Pat McAfee Show" to discuss a number of topics, including his dissatisfaction with the 2026 Reds.
"My whole life I grew up watching and listening to every Reds baseball game," Herbstreit explained during the broadcast. "I am a diehard Reds baseball fan. And after 13 years of underachieving, I am always a fan. But I am so beyond ****** off with the lack of competitive fire from the organization. They've beaten it out of me."
"Look at the stands," Herbstreit continued. "I'm not the only one. Look at all the (empty) red seats at the home games. It is what it is. … When I was growing up, Reds' baseball was as proud as any professional organization there was in all of sports, not just baseball. They don't have that now. Hopefully they'll get it back one day. I'm still a fan. I just get disgusted with them."
Herbstreit made similar remarks on McAfee's show in July, going into painstaking detail about how challenging it is for him to root for the Reds.

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer is really high on Bo Nix ahead of the quarterback's third season in the NFL
Nix, coming off a broken ankle, is looking to break into the top half of signal-callers, and Plummer says there's no concern on his end about Nix getting right back to form this fall.
"I think we're going to see the same Bo we've seen," Plummer said at a USAA boot camp at the Broncos' facility on Wednesday. "The kid loves football. He's a great leader. He plays a game with a ton of passion... hopefully he can go through the season without getting hurt because we saw how important he was to this team."
Nix's importance to the Broncos cannot be overstated, going into one of the most anticipated seasons for the franchise since 2015. Nix's statistics are hard to ignore as well, as his numbers match up with some of the best in the NFL over the past two seasons. Plummer praised Nix's superb athleticism and smarts when he's under center.
"The kid plays the game at a really high level," Plummer said. "He's smart with the ball. He can stay in the pocket, throw the ball. I'm hoping he gets a little more anticipation this year, maybe not having to rip it all the time, but taking a little bit off and leading guys and knowing when the holes are opening in the passing game. But then outside of that, he's just amazing at what he does with his legs. He's so smart when he runs. He picks the right times and he's also very elusive, a lot more elusive and quick than people give him credit for in this league that's full of so many mobile athletic gunslingers and quarterbacks. Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of striker Liam Delap on a five-year deal for a reported package of £50 million.
Delap joins the club after a difficult first season at Chelsea, who he joined after impressing for Ipswich Town. Indeed, the striker played 47 times for the Blues across all competitions, scoring just three times.
However, Delap now has a chance to get back to his best form at Forest after signing until 2031.
"I really can't wait to get started, this is a massive club with a big history," the 23-year-old said on his arrival at the club.

SEQUOYAH — Sequoyah will find out quickly how much progress it has made.
The Eagles renew their rivalry with Inola on Aug. 28, providing an immediate measuring stick against a Longhorns program coming off a 9-3 season.
Inola graduated 18 seniors, but Sequoyah coach Rob Gilbreath still expects a difficult matchup and wants to see Sequoyah compete better than it did in last year's meeting, a 46-6 loss.
"They kind of put it on us last year, so hopefully we can compete with them this year," Gilbreath said. "They graduated heavily, but they still have that really good running back [Jayce Kent]. He was a freshman last year, and he was a game-changer. So we'll have to be able to stop him and be able to move the ball on them and have less mistakes than they do."
Cleveland presents another significant early challenge. After going through a rebuilding period of its own, Gilbreath expects the Tigers to bring a talented roster to Sequoyah.

It's a new year for Bob Chesney and Colin Hitschler but the two coaches remain together, with Hitschler following Chesney from James Madison to California to join the UCLA Bruins. While it's a new roster, conference and program, there's a few things that remain the same.
One of those things being Trent Hendrick, who joined UCLA over the weekend. Hendrick won the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year award under Hitschler last year and more success could be headed their way in 2026.
Hitschler spoke to the media on Tuesday after practice and talked about the new addition at linebacker.
"We had a lot of fun together last year and I think he did a great job where he was. I'm glad he got the opportunity for himself to hopefully continue to play college football here," Hitschler said. "What a special opportunity for him. Let's make the most of it."
One of the main things to watch for UCLA football this season is how Hitschler's defense will fare in the Big Ten. UCLA allowed the fourth-most yards per game last season in the Big Ten and had the worst scoring defense in the conference, allowing 33.4 points per game.

Since his DUI arrest in March, golf legend Tiger Woods has largely remained out of the public spotlight. He was involved in a rollover crash in South Florida while allegedly driving under the influence, with opioid tablets in his pocket after the crash.

Undrafted free agent (UDFA) Trebor Pena went into training camp looking to make a strong impression on the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff, something that he has likely done up to this point.
That said, he still faces an uphill battle when it comes to making the final roster. The wide receiver room is already crowded, with six roster spots — Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington, Travis Hunter, Josh Cameron, and CJ Williams — accounted for.
Pena would need to convince the Jaguars to roster a seventh wide receiver, which, admittedly, would help bolster the overall depth. With Hunter playing primarily on defense this season, it would give them more weapons to utilize, not just in receiving, but also in run blocking and on special teams.
But even if Jacksonville does choose to roster a seventh receiver, Pena has to get past other hopefuls to win out, with Austin Trammell likely his biggest competition.
Over the last two weeks, Pena's stock has skyrocketed, as he has turned in two impressive performances that have been recognized by Pro Football Focus (PFF) not just once, but twice.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has been talking about Julian Alvarez once again and has told Atletico Madrid that the club still want to sign the Argentina international.
Laporta has already said that Barcelona have made a bid for the forward and now says he remains hopeful Atletico will accept the offer.
"We are very interested in the player and we would like our offer to be accepted," he said, per Mundo Deportivo.
"We do this with all due respect to Atlético, and if they are in a position to sell the player on the market, we are prepared to buy him in accordance with the offer we made."
Atletico's stance throughout the transfer window has been that Alvarez is simply not for sale, even though the forward has asked for move.

Josh Hart is entering the final guaranteed year of his four-year, $80 million contract with the New York Knicks (with a $22.3 million team option next offseason), so he'll enter the 2026-27 season motivated to play well for the defending champions.
Hart is reportedly eligible for a four-year, $132 million extension. However, the New York Knicks plan to keep the championship core together for as long as possible, so he might have to take a pay cut to avoid going into the second apron. The Jacksonville Jaguars' offensive line unit took its lumps during Tuesday's joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, specifically in pass protection.
John Shipley of Jaguars on SI put together his good and not-so-good from the practice, and in the latter category was the offensive line's play in pass pro.
Shipley noted that the Bucs' defensive front was generating pressure from "a few different spots." In a separate article, Shipley noted that Reuben Bain Jr. found his share of success against the Jaguars' tackles not named Anton Harrison.
From the Jaguars' perspective, hopefully this was just a down day against a stout Bucs' pass rush and not a sign of what's to come this season.
Jacksonville has been getting healthier up front and potentially had their Week 1 offensive line configuration on the field. This unit consisted of Harrison at left tackle, followed by Emmanuel Pregnon, Robert Hainsey, Ezra Cleveland, and Walker Little, according to Shipley.

Bayern Munich's latest arrival, Ismael Saibari, spoke to the press when he was officially introduced as a new signing in Munich. One of the topics that came up was his ability to speak multiple languages. Saibari said, "I speak five languages — English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Dutch — and hopefully German soon too. I like languages and different cultures." It is a good thing that he likes learning new languages, because Bayern is famously strict about their new signings learning German and require rigorous language courses.
Saibari's personal and family history explains his ability to speak multiple languages. He was born to Moroccan parents in Spain, which accounts for his knowledge of Arabic and Spanish. He moved with his family to Belgium when he was young where he learned Flemish Dutch and French. Although he never lived in an English-speaking country, he likely studied it in school and likely spoke it frequently playing with international teammates throughout his career.

On Monday, the New Orleans Saints announced that they had signed free agent Daniel Carlson at kicker. Carlson was added to hopefully stabilize the New Orleans kicking situation. Charlie Smyth and Tanner Brown had both had their struggles through training camp and preseason for the Saints.
Carlson, 31, has spent all but two games of his eight-year NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was a teammate of running back Zamir White for four seasons with the Raiders. It really seemed like Ashton Jeanty avoided a devastating injury over the weekend. The Las Vegas Raiders running back reportedly couldn't put weight on his leg on Sunday, but reports said it was a sprained ankle.
ESPN's Ian Rapoport provided more details as Mike Washington Jr. could be the RB1 for the Raiders for a bit: The ankle injury is "more low than high" (there would be bigger concern if it was a high ankle sprain) and it's not major.
On top of that, as he said on NFL Network Tuesday morning, "The reality is, there is a chance that Ashton Jeanty may not be on the field for Week 1. They are hopeful that he will be, there's a chance that he won't be."

In the past 10 days, the Twins have been swept by the Phillies, swept the Braves, and then were swept by the Padres. It's all or nothing in the dog days of summer and hopefully the win today puts them back in the "all" category.
The Twins got off to a great start and, unlike some other games in recent weeks, kept on adding throughout the middle innings to put this one out of reach for the opponent. Byron Buxton walked and Ryan Jeffers singled to put two men on for RBI machine Josh Bell. Bell crushed the first pitch he saw to left-center for what he thought was a three-run dong, but instead bounced off the very top of the wall for a double. Buxton scored but the A's got the ball back in quickly to keep Jeffers at third. Either way, the Twins took yet another early lead.

Bell also drove in Minnesota's second run, though this one came in a very different matter. After hitting his first one about 379.9 feet, this one went all of six feet. But with Buxton on third base, that was all the Twins needed to score.
The homeless A's rallied in the third to bring the game within one. Twins starter Zebby Matthews gave up back to back singles to rookie Henry Bolte and veteran Jeff McNeil to start the inning, but the damage was limited thanks to a Zack Gelof GIDP. Lawrence Butler still drove in Bolte with a two out single, but Matthews did a good job keeping things in check.

Although the Bundesliga season is about to begin, Borussia Dortmund are still in the hunt for defensive reinforcements. According to Ruhr Nachrichten and numerous other sources, the BVB front office is in negotiations with FC Barcelona for right-back and La Masia graduate Hector Fort. While a deal has not yet been reached, the club is reportedly confident that the transfer will go through soon.
The transfer fee will likely be within the €10-20 million range, with Barcelona willing to go a little lower if Dortmund is willing to add a sell-on clause. While other clubs including Real Sociedad are interested, Fort apparently has a clear preference for Dortmund.
Fort has not had much senior experience. He spent last season on loan at Elche, where he played about 500 minutes, missing most of the season with a shoulder injury. At least he suffered this injury while celebrating a spectacular goal which was apparently voted the La Liga Goal of the Month for December.
While Fort is viewed highly in Barcelona, there is little room in the squad with Eric Garcia, João Cancelo, and at Xavi Espart all ready to play at right-back. With the departure of Yan Couto to Como, BVB desperately need reinforcements at right-back. Hopefully Ole Book can get the move across the line soon.

Keely Hodgkinson has withdrawn from the women's 800 metres at Thursday's Diamond League meeting in Zurich because her "body is not quite ready".
Olympic champion Hodgkinson had been set to go head-to-head with Switzerland's Audrey Werro, who beat the Briton to gold at the European Championships in Birmingham earlier this month.
"Unfortunately the body isn't quite ready to race again after the European Championships," Hodgkinson said in a statement.
"We've made the decision to skip this race and get ready for the next one. Sad to miss it, hopefully see you next year!"
The race will feature world 400m hurdles champion Femke Broeders-Bol, who has stepped up to the 800m this season, and Hodgkinson's training partner Georgia Hunter-Bell, who won 800m gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month.

After starting the season hot, going 7-7 and 14-15 on extra points through the first four weeks of the season, the Ravens looked like they found their replacement for former long-time kicker Justin Tucker.
But in Week 5 against the Houston Texans, the Ravens found a hole in his game that became a problem late in the year. Against Houston, he went 1-2 on field goals and missed his only attempt from 50 yards. A small hiccup that tends to happen from time to time with kickers who are expected to be almost perfect.

After the Detroit Lions' 2025 disappointing season—a playoff-less 9-8 year—analysts have gone one of two ways with the future in Detroit. Some believe their Super Bowl window is closing or closed. Others believe it was a temporary step back, and they'll be back in contention in 2026. Well, you can count ESPN's Bill Barnwell as one of the people in the latter category.
On Monday, Barnwell put together his annual list of NFL teams most likely to improve in 2026, and the Lions were one of five teams listed. Barnwell's methodology for these list typically involves a set of statistics that tend to regress (positively or negatively) to the mean each year. That includes strength of schedule, records in close games, turnover margin, and point differential.
When it comes to the Lions, Barnwell pointed to several metrics that indicate Detroit could be in for a bounce-back season. One odd one was Detroit's terrible recovery rate on fumbles. Per Barnwell, Detroit recovered just 29 percent of fumbles last year, which not only was last in the league, but it was "just the fifth time since 1990 that any team has failed to recover at least 30% of fumbles in a season."
Barnwell also points to injuries as something that should (hopefully) regress to the mean in the Lions' favor in 2026.
"Detroit was last in adjusted games lost on defense, where the only starters who suited up for all 17 games were Derrick Barnes, Jack Campbell, Aidan Hutchinson and DJ Reader," Barnwell wrote.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder says Kalvin Phillips is close to returning to first-team action – but Ryan One and Tahith Chong are unlikely to be available this week.
The Blades take on Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and providing a team news update ahead of the game, Wilder said: "We've got a couple of enforced from the weekend.
"We're not expecting Ryan and Tahith Chong back for the weekend, but it's ongoing, hopefully off the back of a good week (of training) for them.
"We don't want to rush players back and take chances, it's important for them and for me to have some continuity and we don't need to take risks at this part of the season.
"When they're back, they'll be ready to step into first-team football for hopefully a long period.
