GREENSBORO, NC — Davis Thompson vaulted up the Wyndham Championship leaderboard Saturday with a 5-under 65 and put himself just outside the FedEx Playoff bubble.
But it was an albatross on the fifth hole and a broken driver on the 14th that defined his moving day at Sedgefield Country Club.
After four pars to open his round, Thompson hit an 8-iron 186-yards into the par-5 fifth that rolled onto the back of the green, took an adventurous ride on the Donald Ross green and found the cup for a 2.
"Kind of got off to a slow start and then, you know, making an albatross usually helps get things going," Thompson said.
It was the second double eagle of Thompson's career, he claims, the other coming on the 16th at Bay Hill during a Palmer Cup event while at the University of Georgia. He has never recorded a hole-in-one on the PGA Tour, but said he wouldn't trade one for an albatross.

With their lower value trade chips gone on deadline day, the Mets moved on to trading players with more significant value. The Pirates were the eventual landing spot for the first of these deals, landing Luke Weaver— along with some coverage of his contract—for infield prospect Sammy Stafura.
Stafura was drafted in the second round of the 2023 draft by the Reds out of Walter Panas High School. Two years later, he was traded to Pittsburgh as part of a deadline deal for Ke'Bryan Hayes. Stafura is actually a lifelong Mets fan from Westchester, the second local product (after Gary Gill Hill, acquired from the Rays in the Freddy Peralta trade) acquired by the Mets at this deadline. It is always cool when you can bring in players who are enthusiastic about the organization.
As for the on-field player, Stafura is your classic toolsy middle infielder; he has plus speed, is a decent shortstop defender, and has plus potential raw power. His on field performance prior to June of 2026 could best be described as "good, but not great". Then he hit 16 homers in his last 22 games at High-A Greensboro. That's something that should certainly grab your attention.
With the upside that performance portends comes serious hit tool questions. Stafura is striking out almost 30% of the time in High-A, is running a 71% Z-contact, and has a clear propensity to chase. This all portends to serious hit tool and/or pitch recognition issues, flaws that could be crippling as he moves up the minor league ladder. This weakness will likely him keep him at the back-end or just off offseason top-100 lists (a distinction that is largely meaningless from those that sneak on to the back of the list).
Sometimes guys with big tools and serious hit tool questions have a huge month with no root cause beyond statistical noise. Sometimes it's the product of actual changes that are real and sustainable. Parsing whether Stafura's recent surge – which pushed his OPS at High-A from the high 500s into the 1.000+ range – is the former or the latter is nigh impossible for us on the public side. **** , it's not even all that easy for team-side **** ysts to figure out. What this does serve to illustrate is the high risk, high reward nature of this profile.

When Florida State was preparing for the 2025 season, defensive tackle Kevin Wynn was looked at as one of the top incoming freshmen and a player who could have an immediate impact. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned for the former four-star prospect.
Wynn suffered an injury late in fall camp that held him out of FSU's win against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the season opener. He ended up playing in just four games last season and recorded one tackle. Now, Wynn is healthy, and he's also about 30 pounds lighter at 317.
According to defensive line coach Terrance Knighton, Wynn has made the most of his opportunities during the summer. He feels that Wynn has taken more strides than anyone.
"Juju, I think, had the biggest jump this summer. He's lost 40 pounds," Knighton said via Warchant. "He's moving well, which is helping his body with the day-to-day. Now, he's able to, like I said, focus on football. He's in great shape, and he's ready to show he can be an every-down player."
Wynn was an absolute force during his high school days at Greene County High School in Greensboro, Georgia. He racked up 84 tackles for loss and 14 sacks (seven as a senior). He displayed an incredible burst and great power, which is why he lived behind the line of scrimmage and became a top 100 recruit.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The Savannah Steel lost, 86-74, to the Charlotte Crown, which extended the worst losing streak in franchise history, on Thursday at Enmarket Arena.
Savannah played well in the first half, leading 44-37 at the break. However, in the second half, Charlotte outscored Savannah, 49-30.
Zee Spearman, who played 26 minutes coming off the bench, led the team in scoring with 27 points.
The Steel did not shoot well from behind the 3-point line. They only made two of their 12 attempts.
Savannah has not won a game since they defeated the Greensboro Groove at home, 79-58, on June 27.

The New Mexico Goatheads added to their blue line on Tuesday.
The Colorado Avalanche’s ECHL affiliate announced the signing of defenseman Trevor Zins for its inaugural season, which begins Oct. 16 at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
Zins is the second player the Goatheads have signed. The first-year franchise announced the addition of forward Grant Ahcan on Friday. Zins was a teammate of Ahcan’s older brother, Jack, during the 2019-20 season at St. Cloud State in Minnesota.
Zins spent two seasons at St. Cloud State — including as a member of the program’s national runner-up team in 2021 — but did not appear in any games, before finishing his college career at St. Thomas (Minnesota).
This will be the 27-year-old’s fourth professional season after stops with the Indy Fuel, Idaho Steelheads and Greensboro Gargoyles. He spent time with all three teams last season, recording two goals and 15 ****** ists in 65 regular-season games.

BUIES CREEK — Campbell will travel to Durham on Tuesday, Dec. 15 to take on Duke — just a few months before the 35th anniversary of the teams facing off in the 1992 NCAA tournament.
The meeting will be the fourth overall between the Camels and Blue Devils on the hardwood and the first since Nov. 13, 2021, when No. 9 Duke held off an upset-minded Campbell squad 67-56.
Campbell’s contest at Duke will mark the seventh-consecutive season that Campbell has faced an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. CU traveled to NC State in the ‘20-21 and ‘22-23 campaigns, played at Duke in ‘21-22, at Virginia Tech in ‘23-24, at North Carolina in ‘24-25, and last season traveled to Wake Forest.
The Blue Devils defeated the Camels 82-56 on Mar. 19, 1992 in the NCAA tournament first round at the Greensboro Coliseum on the way to a second-straight national ****** le. Colorado basketball unveiled its official 2026-27 roster late last week.
The release follows a busy offseason of turnover. The program bid farewell to several key players, including star point guard Isaiah Johnson and starting forwards Bangot Dak and Sebastian Rancik. Role players Felix Kossaras, Alon Michaeli and Andrew Crawford also departed the program.
As a result, the program returns just four major contributions from its 2025-26 rotation: guards Barrington Hargress, Ian Inman, Josiah Sanders and Jalin Holland. Sweeney will be adding DJ Bakker, Mfon Udofia and Riley Crean as ***** istant coaches for the Magic, a league source confirmed to the Orlando Sentinel on Wednesday night.
There are more additions to be made as Sweeney starts the process of filling out his staff that will help him as a first-time NBA head coach. Most coaching staffs around the league feature anywhere from 6-11 ***** istant coaches.

Bakker, 43, is an ***** istant coach for the Hornets and serves as the head coach of Charlotte’s G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. He and Sweeney crossed paths when they both worked for the Pistons from 2018-21 under past coach Dwane Casey.
