PASADENA, Calif. - For three quarters and seven minutes, Bob Chesney's Rose Bowl debut was a dull affair, then just as quickly, the Bruins gave their faithful fans and historic stadium plenty to cheer about.
The SDSU Aztecs came to town looking to present a challenge and they certainly didn't make things easy on the Bruins, nor did the Bruins make things easy back. Both siders traded drives where they accomplished relatively nothing. So much nothing in fact the first play to go past the 50-yard line and into opposing territory didn't happen until Brian Rowe Jr. caught a pass with 11:47 left in the second quarter and both sides went into halftime tied 0-0.
Neither side particularly excelled with their passing, even if UCLA had the slight edge through the first half and finished with a much larger edge with 151 net passing yards to just 45 by SDSU and both sides were equally unsuccessful in their rushing attempts early on, but things started to change for UCLA in the second half.
"That is not the way we want to play football, obviously in the first half," Chesney said. "But at the same point in time, that's where we found ourselves. And I think every once in a while, it wasn't pretty, but it was gritty, and you need one of those."
UCLA struck first with a rushing touchdown courtesy of fifth-year running back Wayne Knight early in the third quarter, but UCLA could have scored far earlier than that if senior quarterback Nico Iamaleava made a different decision in a critical moment.

Once again the Giants offense made things interesting against the San Diego Padres, and once again they came up short.
A late outburst of power from the unlikely sources of Drew Cavanaugh (his first career HR) and Drew Gilbert forced the Padres bullpen to rally their arms with Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller stopping the buck to serve the Giants their second loss in the series, and seventh of their last nine games against San Diego.

Former Florida State forward Alex Steen suffered a setback in his effort to secure another season of college basketball eligibility, according to Chris Nee of Noles247. Leon County Circuit Court Judge David M. Frank denied Steen's verified emergency motion for a temporary and preliminary injunction on Friday, Sept. 11. Steen is suing the NCAA in an effort to obtain a fifth season of eligibility for the 2026-27 season.
Steen and attorneys representing both sides appeared before Frank for a hearing on Sept. 2. The former Seminole is part of the 2022 high school class and played four consecutive college seasons without redshirting. His lawsuit challenges his exclusion from the NCAA's new eligibility framework that provides five seasons of competition to athletes from the 2023 class and beyond.
Under Florida law, Steen needed to satisfy four requirements to receive a temporary injunction: a substantial likelihood of success on the merits, no adequate remedy at law, irreparable harm without an injunction, and a showing that granting relief would serve the public interest. Frank determined Steen had not met the necessary standard.
The court found Steen's claimed losses involving practices, workouts, team activities, recruiting conversations, and professional evaluation were not supported by sufficient evidence and remained speculative. Frank also wrote that potential lost NIL income could be measured financially and therefore addressed through monetary damages.
Frank additionally determined a temporary injunction would not serve the public interest, reasoning that granting one player another season could affect roster spots, playing time, scholarships, and revenue-sharing allocations for other athletes.

She has helped her alma mater build steadily over the years. The Trojans had 23 girls compete Saturday in the Southeast Michigan Independent Swimming League Relays on Saturday, Sept. 12.
That depth was crucial as Monroe held off Grosse Ile by 8 points to capture the championship trophy.

The Oklahoma Sooners lost one of their very best players to injury on Saturday in their 17-10 loss against the Michigan Wolverines. In the game's first quarter, star fifth-year linebacker Kip Lewis injured his right knee, initially returning to the game with a brace on. However, he quickly exited again, and was in the sideline in street clothes for the remainder of the contest.
After the game, head coach Brent Venables gave a quick update on Lewis' status, which wasn't a positive one for the Sooners.
"He'll miss some time," Venables said.

First-inning runs alone won't get you over the line most of the time. Stopping at a pair of early solo shots—at least until the ninth inning—the Dodgers' offense left a lot to be desired in a 4-3 loss to the Marlins, as Tyler Glasnow went through plenty of issues in his shortest regular start of the season (4+ IP). The hard-throwing right-hander walked four and seldom looked in rhythm.
Beginning with a bang, the Dodgers made a statement against Tyler Phillips in the first, taking a 2-0 lead with back-to-back long ****** from Mookie Betts and Max Muncy—the one from Betts had special value, given it represented the 10,000th home run in Los Angeles Dodgers history. The problem is that this so-called statement was left at that, with the offense failing to record another hit in Phillips' three-plus innings of work, pitching with a short leash.
By the time Phillips was removed from the game in the fourth, the Marlins had already taken the lead courtesy of a three-run second against Glasnow. This one started bowling shoe ugly and ended up Sam the Chinese Crested Dog ugly, with Bradley Hanner proving why he is the definition of the 26th man on a Major League roster. Gerrit Cole gave up more home runs, three of em while not making it out of the fifth inning, but Hanner wasn't any better, allowing two dingers while five men crossed the plate against him. All this is to say the Yankees were kicked around Saturday afternoon, losing 12-2 to the Mets

He's got the lowest walk rate of his career, and indeed he didn't walk a single batter today. He also has the highest Zone%, or, throws more pitches in the strike zone than any other season of his career.
In his last two starts he's allowed seven home runs. Only three today, though they still counted for four runs like last weekend against the Padres.
Part of this is just random variance, enough monkeys at enough typewriters for long enough. Any time you talk about two games' worth of data, you have to throw up your hands at the universe. He's also been stung by Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth, Francisco Lindor…guys that have been around the block. Lindor especially looked keyed up to swing in the game's first AB, the first dinger Cole allowed today. Former Baby Bomber Luis Torrens and rookie Carson Benge also homered off Cole to build a 4-0 lead.

As continuous inflation squeezes household budgets, the discount retail sector should potentially benefit across the board, with middle- and lower-income consumers looking for value driving foot traffic into value chains. That's roughly what happened in the second-quarter reports from Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) and Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ:DLTR), both of which were released in late August. Both retailers outperformed expectations, though only one company's stock was rewarded for this.
Dollar General Corporation (NYSE:DG) reported second-quarter results on August 27 that exceeded expectations, and shares rose more than 6.5% in premarket trading. Net sales increased 5.2% to $11.29 billion, surpassing the $11.2 billion market forecast, while diluted EPS came in at $2.48, up 33.3% year-over-year and well above the $2.01 ******* ysts projected. Revenue fell 3% to $530 million, yet the company nearly halved its adjusted operating loss and raised full-year earnings guidance to the top end of its range. That combination, shrinking sales alongside expanding profit, is the footwear-first strategy showing up in real numbers. Every one of the company's three brands beat internal expectations, and management says the toughest sales pressure ahead is coming from a deliberate choice rather than a weakening business.
Journeys, the company's teen-focused chain, delivered its eighth consecutive quarter of positive comparable sales, up 2%, even while lapping strong growth from a year earlier. The more interesting story sits underneath that number. The Journeys 4.0 store format, a redesigned concept built around a more elevated ***** ortment, is generating a sales lift of 25% or more wherever it opens, and the company expects roughly 180 locations, about a fifth of its fleet, running that format by year-end. Wells is the namesake plaintiff in the ongoing Wells vs. NCAA case in Jefferson County Circuit Court that earned a fifth-year of eligibility for players like Wells, D'Angelo Hutchinson, Jabari Mack, and Missouri hooper Mark Mitchell.
Wells started all 33 games for the Norse last season, posting career-best averages of 15.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He also earned All-Horizon Tournament Team honors after averaging 22.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.7 ***** ists while helping NKU to the Horizon League semis, where they fell to eventual champion Wright State.

Ciara and Russell Wilson have another child on the way.
In a post shared on Instagram, the 40-year-old singer-songwriter and 37-year-old former NFL star confirmed that they're expecting their fourth child together. "One more person to love," Ciara wrote alongside the carousel post on Instagram, which included videos and photos showing her hanging laundry with a baby ***** p. The laundry consists of four shirts with each of their kids' names on it alongside a baby onesie.

The couple, who got married in 2016, have welcomed three children together since tying the knot. They share nine-year-old Sienna Princess, six-year-old Win Harrison, and two-year-old Amora Princess. Their fourth child together will be Ciara's fifth overall, as she also shares 12-year-old Future Zahir Wilburn with her ex-fiancé, Future.
The couple has yet to announce a due date for their child. Earlier this year, they shared footage of their wedding to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their marriage.

America's F1 hopeful Colton Herta pulls out of the sprint F2 race in Madrid with illness, but it comes after the FIA penalised him to start from the pitlane.
It is not going well for America's F1 hopeful Herta at all in the FIA Formula 2 (F2) Championship in 2026. Having taken a big step to move away from IndyCar in the hope of securing enough superlicence points to race in Formula 1, potentially with Cadillac, the season hasn't gone his way at all.
Racing for Hitech GP, Herta is 17th with 26 points after 10 rounds, with a best result of fifth. The American is racing at F1's new Madring circuit in Madrid on Spanish GP weekend. He started it well in fourth. He was doing well in qualifying in the Top 10 for the most part.
However, he dropped to 12th in the end after he suffered a crash at Turn 19 to end the session. Following the day's run, just before Restricted Period One kicked in for F2 teams, Hitech GP found a problem with the American's car, which they started to work on.
Since it was a priority, they continued working into Restricted Period One and therefore were in breach of Article 21.6a of the F2 regulations. The technical delegate reported the matter, and the stewards duly penalised him with a pitlane start in Madrid's sprint race on Saturday.

Fans will get to see two of the better defenses in the NFL face off in Jacksonville as the Browns fly in to face the Jags in week one. It also happens to be the first game back since October of 2024 for Deshaun Watson, a player who has found immense success over the course of his career vs. the Jaguars.
First though, let's discuss this vaunted Cleveland defense. If not for their putrid offense, this might have been the best unit in the NFL last season. The Browns led the NFL by allowing just 22.6 yards per drive, ranked fourth in yards per play (4.8), and fifth in pressure rate (38.1%).
They also happened to lead the league with 117 tackles for loss on the season.
It's no secret that much of that success can be attributed to one Myles Garrett, but don't overlook who Cleveland got in return for this generation's best pass-rusher. Jared Verse knows how to rush the passer. Since 2024, Verse ranks only behind the previously mentioned Myles Garrett and the Jaguars' very own Josh Hines-Allen in pressures with 157 to his name.
In the secondary, the Browns have a familiar face at cornerback in Tyson Campbell. Following the trade, Campbell actually put together a solid season, allowing a 51% completion rate and eight PBUs. His teammate Denzel Ward also allowed a completion rate under 60%. This is a tough team to find success through the air against, allowing just 167 passing yards per game.

Update morning 9/12: Ben Shelton outlasted fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the all-American semifinal to set up a dramatic men's final vs. top-seeded German Alexander Zverev on Sunday afternoon. Zverev has had quite an easy draw to the final, and he'll be the favorite to win his second major this year.
