The Justice Department's push to pursue a sweeping conspiracy probe into former officials behind investigations targeting President Donald Trump has descended into turmoil and possibly new delays following the abrupt resignation of the top prosecutor overseeing the probe.
Joe diGenova, the Washington lawyer and former top prosecutor leading the South Florida-based investigation, resigned a day after a tense phone call Wednesday with Attorney General Todd Blanche, according to two people familiar with the matter. The final clash centered on diGenova's effort to block lawyers dispatched by Justice Department headquarters from ***** isting the probe, following broader disagreements with top Justice officials over its pace.
Among the disputes that added to tensions between diGenova and his bosses in Washington was diGenova's request for a high-security room known as a SCIF to be built at the Fort Pierce office, to make it easier for the prosecution team to store highly classified materials, two people familiar with the investigation told CNN. Running their traditional slot-T offense, the Panthers (2-0) have started their season in impressive fashion with wins over Killeen High and San Marcos.
Vandegrift (1-1) used a fourth-quarter comeback to force overtime and eventually take a 28-21 win over San Antonio Brennan in Week 1, then lost 38-7 to San Antonio Johnson in Week 2 in a rare home loss.
It's an intriguing matchup of a Class 5A Division II team in Liberty Hill vs. a Class 6A squad in Vandegrift.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.
Bashi (14-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) entered the UFC with much hype but has encountered mixed results. He lost his debut to Christian Rodriguez, but bounced back with a win over John Yannis. In July, Bashi lost a hard-fought battle against Jose Delgado, who is now considered a contender at featherweight.

Mitchell, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound junior, has 294 yards and six touchdowns on 23 carries for the 1-1 Bears, who are No. 4 in this week's Express-News Power Rankings.

PALOS DE LA FRONTERA, Spain (AP) — Matthew Brennan enhanced his status as the standout sprinter at the Spanish Vuelta by winning his fourth stage Tuesday in the 21-year-old British rider's Grand Tour debut.
Brennan was delivered to the front of the bunch with 100 meters left by an ideal leadout from Wout van Aert, his star teammate at Visma-Lease a Bike who already won two stages at this Vuelta.
Crossing the line, Brennan raised his right hand with four fingers out in a victory salute. Bryan Coquard was second and Vito Braet third. Van Aert was sixth at the end of a 181-kilometer (112.5 miles) ride in more blazing heat from Cortegana to Palos de la Frontera.
After 16 stages, overall leader Enric Mas retained his advantage in the red jersey of 2 minutes, 6 seconds ahead of Felix Gall. Primož Roglič is a further 4 second back in third.
Wednesday's stage is another flat ride into Seville before a 32.5-km (20.2-mile) time trial Thursday that could be key for Roglič.

Arizona football is back. The Wildcats took down NAU in their week 1 matchup 35-7. The defense was stout allowing zero points from NAU's offense. Northern Arizona got seven points from a pick-six off of the Wildcats' backup quarterback. Seth Doege's offense was sharp in the first half but slowed down in the second half.
Brent Brennan's group won the program's 5th straight season opener to make it to their ranked matchup with Kalani Sitake and the BYU Cougars healthy and undefeated.
The Wildcats' Heisman hopeful Noah Fifita played lights out again in this one. Fifita was 22 for 29 passing, threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns. Fifita had his first of many lasts this week as he played in his last home opener in Tucson.

After finalizing their initial 53-man roster Sunday, the Rams announced Monday that they had signed 17 players to the practice squad, taking advantage of the additional spot available through the NFL's International Player Pathway program. The official group includes 16 traditional practice-squad players and international punter Jack Bouwmeester.
A significant portion of the practice squad consists of players who have already spent time with Los Angeles.
Six players — Tanner Ingle, Cam Lampkin, Elias Neal, Bill Norton, Brennan Presley and Jordan Waters — were on the Rams' practice squad during the 2025 season. All six signed Reserve/Future contracts with Los Angeles earlier this offseason after spending time on the practice squad last year.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Transfer quarterback Beau Pribula dazzled in his Virginia debut as the Cavaliers drilled visiting North Carolina State 34-8 in the season and ACC opener for both squads on Saturday at Scott Stadium.
Pribula, who started his career at Penn State and played last season at Missouri, threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 110 yards, becoming the first Virginia quarterback to run for 100 yards in a game since Brennan Armstrong in 2022.
Behind a balanced offense and stifling defense, the Cavaliers jumped out to a 17-0 lead headed into halftime.
Virginia, playing without star linebacker Kam Robinson (knee), had no trouble containing CJ Bailey and the Wolfpack. It opened the game with a pair of three-and-outs and then intercepted a tipped pass on NC State's third possession.
The Wolfpack never threatened. Bailey finished 12 for 23 for 84 yards and an interception. He also lost a red-zone fumble.

Unfortunately for Buff Nation, they will have to wait a few more days before Colorado's season kicks off. CU begins its 2026 season on Thursday, Sept. 3, in Atlanta against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Colorado will unveil a nearly entirely refreshed starting lineup, which could include a new starter at every defensive position. Aside from the roster itself, Deion Sanders revamped his coaching staff with two new coordinators, highlighted by Go-Go offense inventor Brennan Marion, a former head coach at Sacramento State.
Marion and his defensive counterpart, Chris Marve, are true leaders, which has been evident throughout fall camp. Both have set their unit's identity heading into Week 1 against Georgia Tech.

Who's got the best high school football in the country? Texas, Florida and California have each long laid stake to that claim, but it's rare that we see good teams from those states play each other. But that's what's happening at Chaparral Stadium in Friday's much anticipated 2026 season opener between the Westlake Chaparrals and the Inglewood (Calif.) Sentinels.
Westlake is one of Texas' top programs. Inglewood is packed with FBS talent, including two defensive linemen committed to Texas A&M and Oklahoma and a defensive back who'll play at Cal. And Chaps quarterback Patton Jones is making his first start against a defense that had seven sacks in Inglewood's season opener last week.

And neither does the Warriors' four-wide offense, In video sessions with offensive newcomers, receivers coach Jared Ursua shows old footage of the Warriors' passing game. "We've been doing this since January," Ursua said of clips of former UH QBs Dan Robinson, Nick Rolovich, Timmy Chang, Colt Brennan, Bryant Moniz and Cole McDonald. "We are who we are, we do what we do, and this system has always worked." QB1 Micah Alejado has been starring in recent remakes, deciphering defenses ahead of the snap, releasing passes within 2.2 seconds, and throwing to targeted areas on the receivers' routes. "Micah's a special quarterback," said Chang, the UH head coach who calls the offensive plays. "He understands our offense, and he understands what teams are trying to do against us." Ursua has implored the receivers to read the coverages correctly "so Micah can throw at a high level based on our indicators, which is what the run-and-shoot is based off." Alejado has shown toughness, playing through injuries to his right ankle last season. The Los Angeles Rams wrapped up a perfect preseason on Thursday night with their third straight win of the summer. They beat the Los Angeles Chargers, 20-18, led by rookie Ty Simpson's impressive performance as the starter.
This was the last chance for several players to push for a roster spot, or at the very least, a job on the practice squad. These six players stood out in a positive way, helping the Rams take down the Chargers at SoFi.
Simpson had his opportunities limited by a lopsided score last week, but he got the start on Thursday night and was given every opportunity to throw the ball. He turned in a very good performance, completing 18 of 23 passes for 119 passes and one touchdown. He avoided a turnover for the third straight game, too.
His best throw of the preseason came on an 11-yard touchdown strike to Brennan Presley, rolling out to his left and making a perfect throw to his receiver in the end zone for six points. He was confident and accurate, completing 11 of his first 12 passes. It would've been hard for Simpson to have a much better preseason than he had.
This was Connors' last opportunity to prove he deserves to make the team and he gave the coaching staff a lot to like. He caught another touchdown pass on a Texas route, finding the void in the zone and hauling in Matthew Caldwell's pass at the goal line.

Ty Simpson was a first-round pick for a reason. He's athletic, throws with good accuracy and can operate a pro-style offense, which are primary reasons the Los Angeles Rams drafted him 13th overall.

Tesco Ireland has signed a three-year, €45m ($52.5m) agreement with Freshways to supply sandwiches, wraps, salads and pasta dishes for its meal deal range.
The deal builds on a supplier relationship between the two companies spanning more than two decades.
Headquartered in Finglas, Dublin, Freshways provides more than 40 product lines to the meal deal range under its Crust & Co brand, covering sandwiches, wraps, salads and pasta dishes.
Tesco Ireland fresh category director John Brennan said: "Freshways has been a trusted and valued supplier to Tesco Ireland for many years, consistently delivering high-quality products that our customers love. Their commitment to innovation, quality, and service has helped us build the strongest meal deal offerings in the market."
The contract comes after Freshways put €8m into its Finglas production site, adding "high-care" manufacturing **** e, increasing storage capacity and upgrading refrigeration systems.

Everton begin their 125th top flight season and the second at their new Merseyside home against last year's Europa Conference League champions Crystal Palace.
The Toffees go into the game cautiously optimistic after some bright moments in pre-season. Their remains frustration however at a failure to address key issues in the transfer marker and the uncertainty over the future of David Moyes as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract.
The late season collapse is also fresh in people's minds, with the opportunity of European football thrown away thanks to a winless seven-game run to close out the season.
New signings include last season's Championship Player of the Year Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough, an energetic number eight who can hopefully add some incisiveness even from the deeper midfield position he's been deployed at so far. Saturday's game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs brought answers and left us with some significant questions.
There remain two exhibition games to collect information ahead of the page turning to the regular season. If searching for answers to the leftover burning questions, these are the areas I would start:
Despite watching Xavier Smith quite literally fumble away the NFC Championship game last season, he returns as LA's primary punt returner. The Rams had all offseason to either bring in competition or consider alternatives. Instead, they seem ready to run it back with Smith.
But why? Smith brings little upside to the return role, even if he did break a longer return for one of the most important plays in Saturday's game in KC. Can the Rams maximize a roster spot by identifying a player who can contribute more as a returner and elsewhere?
I'd start with receiver Brennan Presley, who played well in the 2025 exhibition games and then led the Rams in receiving yards against the Chiefs. Presley has a similarly sized frame and close skillset to Smith. He seems to be a more productive receiver and the team risks nothing by experimenting with him as a punt returner. Presley already returned kicks in the preseason opener. Push his limits and see what he is capable of.
