Johnson Wagner believes that while some will vote for Scottie Scheffler to be PGA Tour Player of the Year, the opportunity to opt for someone else for a change will tempt many to look elsewhere.
Scheffler is in an unusual position heading into the FedEx Cup playoffs. Over the previous few seasons, the world number one has been dominant, winning the Player of the Year in each of the last four years.
However, the 2026 season has been a lot tougher for Scheffler. While he won The American Express on his first start of the year, the 30-year-old has failed to add to his tally of victories.
Scheffler has finished second five times. Meanwhile, the likes of Chris Gotterup, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Cameron Young, and Wyndham Clark have all won multiple times.
There is no question that Scheffler has to be in the conversation when it comes to the Player of the Year.

It was nothing more than a post-Open Championship vacation with his mother, but there could be no better place than Paris to remind Ryan Gerard how much life has changed in seven months.
Think back to the penultimate week in December when Gerard, a month into his offseason and at No. 57 in the world ranking, flew halfway around the globe to the tiny island of Mauritius for a shot at finishing the year in the top 50 in the world.
He lost in a playoff and moved to No. 46 to secure his trip to the Masters. His flight home included a long layover in Paris, enough time for him to see the Notre Dame cathedral, the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower. "Pretty sick," he said that day.
Gerard opened the year with consecutive runner-up finishes. He earned his way into the U.S. Open and British Open, lost in a playoff at the Memorial and goes into the Wyndham Championship at No. 16 in the FedEx Cup as he looks toward making the Tour Championship.
His mother came over to Royal Birkdale, where Gerard tied for ninth, and they were off to Paris for three days. That's when Gerard, who doesn't take much serious outside of his golf, went on a most unusual search to find "the worst statue that I could possibly find."

Patrick Cantlay became the fifth player to withdraw from this week's Wyndham Championship since the field was announced at the traditional PGA Tour Friday deadline.
Cantlay tied for eighth Sunday at the Rocket Classic, his fourth top 10 and ninth top 25 of the 2026 season. He's currently 41st in the FedEx Cup Playoffs standings, which puts him through to not only the first postseason event next week, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, but also Week 2's BMW Championship.
If PGA Tour players WD before a tournament starts, they're not required to provide a reason.

Just hours after winning the Rocket Classic in Detroit for his first PGA Tour victory, Michael Thorbjornsen withdrew from the Wyndham Championship on Sunday night.
The 24-year-old Stanford alum shot a career-low 63 in the final round to erase a four-stroke deficit at the start of the day and get into the winner's circle in his 65th career Tour start. The 500 FedEx Cup points lifted him from No. 69 in the season-long standings and just inside the cut-off line for the playoffs to No. 31 and safely into the BMW Championship.
Thorbjornsen had played four of the last five Tour events. It's the age-old dilemma: rest or ride the momentum? Thorbjornsen opted to celebrate his achievement and gear up for making a playoff run.
The top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will qualify for the first event of the playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship (Aug. 13-16). The top 50 advance to the next week and the BMW Championship at Bellerive in St. Louis; the top 30 make it to East Lake in Atlanta for the Tour Championship.
Thorbjornsen's withdrawal is good news for at least one player: Justin Lower, the first alternate, is officially in the field and needs a win to have any shot at the playoffs. He's No. 174 in the FedEx Cup.

Ben Griffin opened up with a round of two-under par 68 at the Rocket Classic on Thursday.
Griffin hasn't been at his best so far in 2026, after his stellar 2025 season when he won three PGA Tour ***** les.
The 30-year-old from North Carolina is without a win so far this season, and he only has four top-10 finishes to his name in 21 starts.
However, Ben Griffin has been showing signs that his form is returning since the PGA Championship, with five top-25 finishes to his name in six starts.
He will obviously be hoping for another solid tournament at the Rocket Classic this week as he looks to maintain his place inside the top 50 of the FedEx Cup points list.

The Twin Cities injected some excitement into the late season last week, and there was good news for former Bulldogs to boot. First, Tour rookie (I mean like 24 days since turning pro) Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open in his 3rd start as a professional and 7th time playing a Tour event (he played several as an amateur and based on his NCAA Championship). He beat everyone not named Scottie Scheffler by 5 shots, and held off the world #1 in the process. His incredible collegiate career at Auburn was not a fluke, unlike their academic credentials.
For the boys in red & black: Keith Mitchell finished in a tie for 44th, so his position in the FedEx Cup points did not change. Chris Kirk got to 12 under par, and the T31 finish ***** ped him up 3 spots to 143rd in the FedEx. But he'll need a VERY high finish the next two weeks to get into the post-season. David Thompson got a much-needed top 10 (T7) and that moved him up to 93rd position – still outside the top 70 but do now he has an outside chance to advance.
And Brian Harman played the final day alongside Scottie Scheffler and for the most part kept up with him. Harman shot a Sunday 65 and got a T3 – and those points ***** ped him from the dangerous 74th spot to a more comfortable 62nd spot. So let's see what's on tap this week.

Brooks Koepka will not be playing in Detroit after all.
The PGA Tour announced on Tuesday, July 28, the five-time major champion has withdrawn from the 2026 Rocket Classic after committing to the tournament on July 13.
Ben Silverman will take his place in the 147-player field that is now finalized (see full field and tee times below).
Koepka has had a unique schedule this year for a player as accomplished as himself. He had to earn his status back on the PGA Tour after leaving for the start-up rival LIV Golf from 2022-25.
Part of that has included stops at tournaments he has not typically played in to try and earn FedEx Cup points, such as playing the final Rocket Classic in Detroit, where he had never played before.

Tiger Woods went to the top of the PGA Tour career money list when he was runner-up at Torrey Pines on Feb. 13, 2000, and he has stayed there ever since. His last check for finishing last at the 2024 Masters ($44,400) pushed his career earnings to $120,999,166.
Being passed is inevitable and now is in clear view. It's just a matter of who tops him first.
Rory McIlroy, who lost in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Match Play in his PGA Tour debut, is second on the list at $116,446,772. Scottie Scheffler, who cashed his first PGA Tour check in 2018, moved to $116,364,411 with his runner-up finish in the 3M Open.
That leaves both of them just over $4 million away from Woods coming into the lucrative FedEx Cup postseason — $20 million purses at two playoff events, and the Tour Championship with its $40 million bonus pool that now counts as official money.
Scheffler became the third player in history to earn nine figures in their career earlier this year, when he won the American Express. Since then, the world's top-ranked player has finished second five times.

On Friday night, Chris Haynes of NBA on Prime reported the news that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and the Memphis Grizzlies are working on a buyout.
He would then join the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent.

Earlier this season Xander Schauffele's consecutive cuts made streak ended at 72. A couple of weeks ago, Scottie Scheffler was the PGA Tour active leader at 78 when that ended at the Scottish Open. A week later at the British, Matt Fitzpatrick at 28 was the leader in the category but that was short-lived as he missed the weekend.
Heading into the 3M Open, Hideki Matsuyama was the active leader with 28 straight made cuts. Through 27 holes at TPC Twin Cities, the ***** anese start was 2 under overall and on the wrong side of the projected cut of 3 under, putting him in danger of being the latest cuts made leader to come up short.
But he flipped the script after making birdies on Nos. 10, 12, 13 and 14. His 2 on the par-3 13th also won the fans over as there was a promotion on Friday whereby beers would be half-price at the concession stand near the 13th hole for 10 minutes after any birdie. It didn't take long for a long line to form.
What about those on the wrong side of the cut?
With three events left before the FedEx Cup Playoffs, time is running out for those scrambling to get into the top 70. That's the game within the game among those also more pressing to play the weekend.

Only three weeks remain in the regular season of the FedEx Cup; only 70 players move on to the playoffs. Heading into this week's 3M Open, Keegan Bradley and Brian Harman are among the 22 players that made the playoffs last season and are currently outside the top 70 of the 2026 FedExCup standings. Bradley, who ranks 77th, made it all the way to East Lake and the Tour Championship and had done so three straight seasons, finishing 16th while Harman, currently No. 78, wasn't far behind him at No. 18. Both are in the field this week at TPC Twin Cities and looking to improve their position. Jordan Spieth has committed to the 2026 Rocket Classic, one week before the opening round at Detroit Golf Club.
It will be the first time in the Rocket Classic for the 13-time PGA TOUR winner. Spieth has three major championship victories – the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open and the 2017 Open Championship. He is ranked 55th in both the Official World Golf Ranking and the FedExCup standings.

Detroit — Rocket Classic officials were crossing their fingers for one more big splash with the field for next week's tournament. And on Wednesday night, they sure got one.
Jordan Spieth will play in Detroit's PGA Tour tournament for the first time, tournament officials confirmed to The News.
Spieth, a three-time major champion who has won on the PGA Tour 13 times, pulled out of this week's 3M Open in Minnesota, leading to speculation he could make the Rocket Classic a late addition to his schedule with the PGA Tour playoffs looming. Spieth is 55th in the FedEx Cup standings, and while he's in good shape to make the first playoff event (top 70), the top 50 make the second playoff event and the top 30 make the huge-money Tour Championship.
The Rocket Classic, set for July 30-Aug. 2 at Detroit Golf Club, is the second-to-last regular-season tournament before the start of the PGA Tour playoffs.
Spieth, 32, hasn't won on the PGA Tour since 2022, but he remains a star and a big draw for fans. He joins headliners like Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka among the 145-player field for the eighth and final Rocket Classic. Like Spieth, Schauffele and Koepka are playing in the Rocket Classic for the first time.

The golf world is coming off the final major of the season, the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club last weekend. The dramatic finish, which ended in Ryan Fox claiming victory, has left the next few tournaments on the schedule in the wake of such an important tournament.
Typically, the top players in the game take the week off after a major, unless it is a signature event. However, with the PGA Tour having already completed their eight signature events this year, tournaments that remain between the Open Championship and the FedEx Cup Playoffs remain ones which are filled with players trying to improve their status.
When you look at a tournament such as the 3M Open, it usually lacks the firepower of other tournaments which players have the option of playing; however, this year the 3M open got a boost when the world's top golfer, Scottie Scheffler, entered the field.
Why Scheffler is choosing to play in what most considered a bottom tier event is anyone's guess, but it does provide some star power to the field.

BLAINE, Minn. – Scottie Scheffler is taking a page out of the Bill Belichick playbook. He's moving on to the 3M Open, jet lag be ***** ed.
"I made it to my alarm this morning. Yesterday I was up at like 3:45," he said on Wednesday during his pre-tournament press conference. "Today I woke up for my 4:15 alarm, so that was definitely better."
After finishing T-4 at the British Open at Royal Birkdale, Scheffler isn't wasting any time reflecting on what could've been.
"No, I definitely haven't done that already. During the year, I just get pretty into the competition. So like with the cadence of the schedule, it really is kind of one week to the next. I always do my best to kind of live in the present, so I wouldn't say I reflect a whole lot," he said. "Right now, this week, we're in Minnesota and I spent the last day and a half kind of getting ready for this tournament."
Scheffler said he thinks this is his first trip to the Land of 10,000 Lakes and certainly his first time teeing it up at the 3M Open. It's a big deal for a tournament in its eighth season on the PGA Tour that has struggled to attract the top players in its usual date following the end of the major season but before the FedEx Cup playoffs heat up.

Jason Day has withdrawn ahead of the 2026 3M Open due to a back injury.
The 13-time PGA Tour winner also withdrew from the U.S. Open due to the lingering back injury, which has hampered Day throughout his career. He missed the cut at the Open Championship and finished T-55 at the Travelers between major starts, but he won't tee it up this week at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota.

FedEx is introducing, but not widely advertising, a series of new charges and fees over the next two weeks that could catch customers by surprise, building on a recent pricing strategy aimed at boosting revenue without touching base rates that shippers tend to focus on.
Over an 18-month span, FedEx (NASDAQ: FDX) has implemented or announced more than 50 pricing changes, according to parcel spend management firm LJM. On top of three general rate increases have been fuel surcharge adjustments, five changes to One Rate (a flat-rate, upfront shipping program designed to provide simplicity and predictability), delivery area surcharge updates, customs-related fees, dimensional pricing changes, peak surcharges and demand surcharges.
The surcharges are typically less visible to freight owners than base rates and can have a large impact on transportation budgets.
Shippers have experienced a significant increase in fuel surcharges from FedEx, UPS and even the U.S. Postal Service as the Iran war limited crude oil supplies, pushing up the cost of diesel and jet fuel used to power their fleets, as the TD Cowen/AFS Logistics Freight Index quantified last week. Fuel surcharges in the second quarter were two-thirds higher than the prior year. Overall, the express parcel rate per package increased 5.9% in the second quarter, while the ground parcel rate per package grew 5.2%.
"The biggest takeaway is not just that FedEx is raising rates on a continual basis, but how those increases have been distributed. Many shippers now see accessorial charges in the high-30% to low-40% range as a share of spend, with some exceeding 50%, LJM said in an article on its website. The constant micro-adjustments mean businesses should review their contracts more than once a year, it added.

The First Coast and Georgia's Golden Isles will be sending a sizable contingent of players to the 154th Open Championship, July 16-19 at Royal Birkdale, in Southport, England.
The group is led by three past champions: Jacksonville native David Duval (2001, Royal Lytham and St. Annes), Cameron Smith of Ponte Vedra Beach (2022, St. Andrews) and Brian Harman of St. Simons Island, Ga. (2023, Royal Liverpool).
Duval, now with the PGA Tour Champions, will make his 25th start in the Open, and his first since 2022. Harman, Harris English of St. Simons Island and Billy Horschel of Ponte Vedra Beach are all making their 11th starts in golf's oldest championship.
At the other end of the experience spectrum will be Nease graduate Marcus Plunkett, who has been playing on the Asian Tour, Michael Brennan of Jacksonville and Michael Thorbjornsen of Jacksonville. They are playing in their first British Open and in Plunkett's case, his first major.

Detroit — Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, one of the biggest names in the sport who defected to LIV Golf in 2022 before returning to the PGA Tour earlier this year, will play in the Rocket Classic later this month.
A tournament official confirmed Koepka's commitment Monday.
It will be Koepka's first time playing the Rocket Classic, which will be played for the eighth and final time July 30-Aug. 2 at Detroit Golf Club. Koepka adds to a field that already includes world No. 4 Cameron Young, world No. 8 and two-time U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, and world No. 14 and two-time major champion Xander Schauffele.
Koepka became the first player to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf and then return to the PGA Tour when he was let out of his LIV Golf contract early in January. With his return to the PGA Tour came several significant financial penalties, including ineligibility for 2026 FedEx Cup bonus payouts.
But Koepka still is eligible to compete in playoff events and for those tournament purses if he qualifies. He's currently 84th in the playoff points race, and he'd make the first playoff event if he finishes the regular season in the top 70.

Tom Kim captured the biggest victory of his PGA Tour career Sunday, winning the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland.
With weather delays forcing part of the field to complete the third round Sunday morning, players faced a busy final day before Kim emerged atop the leaderboard.

After finishing 108th in the FedEx Cup standings last season, Kim has enjoyed a strong resurgence in 2026 and now sits 32nd in the standings heading into next week's final major championship.
Min Woo Lee finished alone in second place at 15-under. Keita Nakajima, Johnny Keefer, Matt Fitzpatrick and Robert MacIntyre tied for third at 13-under.
