Penn State football owns a Top 20 ranking, after all, to start its hopeful recovery season under new head coach Matt Campbell.
The Nittany Lions are No. 17 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll, the first of the upcoming 2026 season, which was released on Tuesday, Aug 4.
It's quite the contrast to last August when former coach James Franklin's highly-publicized team started No. 3 − the program's highest preseason standing in the poll in 28 years. Of course, Franklin was fired in the middle of a stunning six-game losing streak that turned Penn State into college football's most disappointing team.
The Lions finished the season unranked, despite a late turnaround under interim leader Terry Smith. Campbell and his new staff now open their first preseason camp on Wednesday, Aug. 5, and will make their debut in a bigger-than-ever Beaver Stadium a month later against Marshall.

The Chicago Bears amped up the intensity during Tuesday's padded practice, which featured several live periods and brought out the emotions. So it's not surprise that the first scuffle of the summer broke out, featuring a pair of notable rookies.
According to Sean Hammond, sixth-round rookie defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg slammed undrafted rookie offensive lineman Caden Barnett into the ground after a snap with the third-team units. It was the first time tempers have flared at Halas Hall this summer.
Patrick Finley added that defensive end Montez Sweat "appeared very excited." In fact, the whole defense was "fired up," according to Greg Braggs.

The possibility of Aaron Donald coming out of retirement to join the Los Angeles Rams is perhaps the biggest storyline around the NFL. Andrew Whitworth added fuel to the fire as he seems to expect Donald will be rejoining the Rams at some point.
Whether it's Sean McVay, Whitworth, Donald himself, no one is saying it's not going to happen. At this point, people are mostly and moreso saying that Donald is more likely to come back than not. That can change, and Donald may not come back, but it's being set up that he's expected to return. For now.
If that is truly announced, that will be major news. Until then, it's speculation, and it's still news as is.

Neymar Sr. said he believes his son could still play in the 2030 World Cup for the Brazilian national team. But Neymar Jr.'s statements have been going against what his father says.
When asked by the press about the end of Neymar's journey with the national team, his father was emphatic: "He said, 'I think for me it's over.' He thinks so. We've just come out of a World Cup, which was difficult for everyone. We're talking about the next World Cup, four years from now. [...] We don't know what tomorrow holds."

New Mexico State announced on Monday, Aug. 3 that Jaime Christian has been hired as the Aggies' new running back coach. Christian's addition comes just three days after former NM State running backs coach, general manager and ******* istant head coach David Cobb was fired for an unknown reason after being placed on administrative leave.
Christian began his coaching career in 2000 and has been an ******* istant coach or graduate ******* istant for six collegiate teams. He was most recently Oregon State's special teams coordinator from 2024-25 and New Mexico's special teams coordinator from 2020-23. He was also the Lobos' running backs coach in 2022.
Christian is familiar with Sanchez, having been UNLV's running backs coach during the first two seasons of Sanchez's tenure there from 2015-16. The Rebels rushed for 241.5 yards per game in 2016, which ranked 15th in the country and was UNLV's highest average since 1979.
Christian has spent some of this offseason with the Aggies in an ******* yst role, which has allowed for his quick transition to being the team's new running backs coach.
"We're excited to welcome Coach Christian to NM State," Sanchez said in a press release. "He is a proven coach with experience developing players and contributing to successful programs. The 2026 NFL regular season is right around the corner, with only a couple of weeks until the preseason kicks off for the Cleveland Browns, as training camp is underway. Detroit — It's been a tough season for Davis Riley, but he's in Detroit now, and we all know Detroit loves a comeback.
Detroit also loves some Eminem. Speaking of which ...
"I love some Eminem," Riley said after taking the lead at the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club. "I do love some Eminem. I may have to blare some Eminem on the way over to the course to kind of get the mojo going."
Riley, 29, a two-time PGA Tour winner, fired a 7-under 63 on Saturday to take a one-shot lead into Sunday's final round of the final Rocket Classic. He was a shot ahead of Michael Brennan and three clear of Rickie Fowler and Co.
Riley seemed to come out of nowhere this week, and even Saturday, when he made a 50-plus-foot putt for birdie at the 17th hole and then made another birdie at the 18th to secure himself a spot in the final pairing Sunday. Those have been two of the most difficult holes all week.

The Tennessee ***** ans quarterback currently fighting for the backup job here, or somewhere else, isn't worried about winning anyone's approval.
He wants to play.
"There are not 32 quarterbacks in this league better than me," Levis said Saturday. "I know that for sure."
Levis' confidence has not wavered one bit from his arrival as the 33rd overall pick in the 2023 draft. The general manager who drafted him was fired in January 2025, and Levis now has to earn more playing time with his third different coach for a franchise that drafted a quarterback No. 1 overall in 2025.

Robert Valentin continued to crawl out of his bad octagon start on Saturday with another win, this time against Dusko Todorovic at UFC Fight Night 283.
After starting his promotional tenure with three consecutive defeats, Valentin (12-6 MMA, 2-3 UFC) now has consecutive wins on his record after he went into Belgrade Arena and upset Serbia's own Todorovic (13-7 MMA, 4-7 UFC) with a guillotine choke submission at the 4:14 mark of Round 1.
The crowd was "muted," in the words of play-by-play man Jon Anik after the local favorite lost in the middleweight bout, but Valentin achieved a successful night. Check out the replay of his win below (via X):

World Rally Championship organisers have red flagged stage 17 at Rally Finland after Sebastien Ogier suffered a high-speed crash from the lead.
The reigning world champion and co-driver Julien Ingrassia were heading towards the end of stage 17 when their Toyota GR Yaris Rally 1 car fired off the road at speed. The car was pitched into a series of rolls heading towards the trees.
Toyota has confirmed that Ogier and Ingrassia exited the car unassisted and are conscious, but will be transported to hospital for further checks.
"Both driver and co-driver were able to get out of the car unassisted. They are both conscious and generally OK, and will be transported to hospital for further checks. The team will provide further updates in due course," read a statement from the Toyota Gazoo Racing.
A statement from the FIA added: "During SS17 'Västilä' at WRC Rally Finland, the crew of car #1 , Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia, were involved in a high-impact accident.

The Trump administration has opened a federal investigation into Denver Public Schools in response to allegations a high school teacher required students of the same **** to kiss as part of a classroom **** ignment, the Department of Education announced Tuesday.
"Schools have an obligation to prevent and address **** ual **** ault," Kimberly Richey, **** istant secretary for civil rights, said in a statement. "Yet in Colorado, school personnel are alleged to have compelled the **** ual **** ault of minor students by forcing them to engage in blatantly **** ualized conduct in class.
"It is abhorrent and the Trump administration will fully investigate this perverse incident to protect students' safety and vigorously uphold students' rights across America."
The Education Department said it is investigating whether Denver Public Schools violated the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), a federal law that gives parents the right to opt their children out of certain surveys, evaluations and instructional activities involving sensitive topics, including **** ual behavior and attitudes.

NMSU ***** istant head coach, general manager and running backs coach David Cobb was fired after a university review, a program spokesperson told the Journal on Friday.
Cobb, 33, had served in a variety of roles on NMSU's staff since 2023. Considered one of the Aggies' most valuable staffers, he was promoted to ***** istant head coach and general manager in January 2025.
It is unclear why the university fired Cobb.
"Before the start of football camp, David Cobb was placed on administrative leave," an NMSU spokesman said in a statement to the Journal. "Following the university's review process, coach Cobb was separated from the program and the university.

CHICAGO — Kyle Whittingham is a tone-setter. At Michigan, he also has to be a stain remover. The 66-year-old former Utah frontman is tasked with ameliorating a program tainted by scandal.
Whittingham was hired by Warde Manuel, an athletic director who's now stepping down at the end of the calendar year after being implicated in an internal investigation "into the circumstances surrounding the conduct" of fired Wolverines football head coach Sherrone Moore. Manuel, according to an FAQ the school put out earlier this month about the investigation and its corresponding culture review, demonstrated "failures to quickly and effectively act on allegations of wrongdoing by Athletic Department employees."
Moore, notably, was arrested by police and fired by Michigan in December for what the university described as an "inappropriate relationship" with a staff member. He faced a collection of charges, including a charge of felony home invasion, although he dodged jail time by reaching a plea deal earlier this year.

In the aftermath of a 3-0 win over the Rangers on Wednesday evening, Ryan Vilade said he did not want to face Bryan Baker. The Rays' infielder/outfielder shares a clubhouse with the righthanded closer, so stepping into the batter's box against Baker is not a concern. For Rays' opponents, facing Baker has been a nightmare in 2026.
"To see 'Big Bake' running in from the bullpen with the lights (flashing on and off) and (music) playing, it gets everyone fired up," said Vilade, whose exceptional work (9 HR, 35 RBI, .804 OPS) in a part-time role has often aided the Rays in getting to their closer. "I'm glad he's on our team and whenever we get to the ninth with him on the ***** p, we feel pretty good."
For good reason. The 6-foot-6 Baker nailed down his 30th save of the season Thursday afternoon in the series finale with Texas to tie with Cleveland's Cade Smith for the MLB lead. During that span, which totals 24 appearances, Baker has allowed one run. "I have been feeding off the catchers and going for what they see and what they've kind of seen the whole game and let the defenders work behind me," said Baker, when asked about the run he is on. At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, defensive tackle Tyleik Williams weighed 334 pounds. The Lions liked him enough to draft him in the first round, but they told him they didn't want him getting heavier. Early this offseason, he did. Now, he's lighter.
Lions coach Dan Campbell said today that he's pumped about what good of shape Williams got into by putting in additional workouts at the team facility this offseason and working with Lions Director of Performance Nutrition Scott Nealon on eating healthy.
"I'm really proud of him, really proud of him," Campbell said of Williams. "He's a man of his word. Before we drafted him, we sat up there, Brad [Holmes] and I did, and said, 'Is there going to be an issue with your weight, ever?' 'No.' He came in, he noticed that he was a little bit heavy in the spring. He came in two weeks before our program even started and was pretty heavy and said, 'I want to get this right.' He put in the work, Scott did a great job with him, got him right."
Campbell said Williams now weighs 325 pounds, which the Lions think is his ideal playing weight.
"He's just put the work in. He's put the work in. And I'll tell you what, he's a man of his word. Came in at 325, made his weight, crushed the conditioning test," Campbell said. "Really fired up. It's a credit to him."

The Buffalo Bills came into the 2026 offseason with plenty of needs. That's not necessarily surprising given the fickle nature of the NFL, but for a team that has qualified for the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons, the list of needs seemed to be larger than one would expect. After head coach Sean McDermott was fired, that list of needs grew to include defensive players who could fit a new defensive system, as well.
One of the positions where the team seemed fairly solid on the surface was cornerback; however, a look beyond that top layer of the depth chart showed a troublesome lack of depth. That lack of depth reared its head at the worst possible time for Buffalo last season, and as a result, the Bills and president of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane made sure to bolster the defensive secondary this spring.

Iran publicly hanged two young men Tuesday over their alleged roles in January's nationwide anti-government protests, as onlookers chanted "Dishonorable, dishonorable!" before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), an exiled Iranian opposition group.
Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi were hanged Tuesday in Isfahan's Shahid Alikhani Square — where authorities alleged they committed offenses connected to the Jan. 8 protests, according to the NCRI and Iranian state media.
The NCRI said onlookers condemned the executions before security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. The opposition group also said security personnel had been deployed on rooftops and surrounding streets.
Iranian state media also reported the public executions, Reuters said, with Iran's semi-official news agency Mehr saying they were carried out in Alikhani Square "in the presence of a group of people."

Attorneys for Lauren Pisciotta filed court documents in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday stating that the two sides reached an "unconditional" settlement on July 23, according to TMZ. A request to dismiss the case is expected to be filed within 45 days of that date. Terms of the agreement were not made public.
Representatives for West, who legally changed his name to Ye, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, according to TMZ.
The filing appears to bring an end to one of the most closely watched civil cases involving the rapper. Attorneys for both sides told Judge Nicholas F. Daum on June 29 that they had settled in principle following a mediation session held earlier that month, according to Complex, which reviewed the court record. An upcoming hearing was taken off the calendar to give the parties time to finalize the deal, with the case scheduled to return to court in late September if further proceedings were needed.
Pisciotta, who worked as West's personal ***** istant from 2021 to 2022, first sued in 2024, alleging ***** ual harassment, breach of contract and wrongful termination. She said she was promoted to chief of staff of West's companies at an annual salary of $4 million before she was fired in October 2022, and that she never received a $3 million severance payment she had been offered, according to Complex.

Trace Adkins says he has forgiven his second wife, Julie Lauren Curtis, for shooting him through the heart and lungs during an argument more than three decades ago.
The country singer revisited the near-fatal 1994 incident during a July 28 appearance on This Past Weekend With Theo Von.
Although Adkins joked that Curtis "took it a little far," he also described the point-blank gunshot as a "kill shot" that he would not have survived without emergency medical care.
Adkins declined to press charges after the shooting. He now says he does not believe Curtis fully understood what the gun would do when she pulled the trigger.
"That took it a little far, I thought," he told Theo Von. "That was uncalled for. That was totally uncalled for. Just leave. Let's just call it quits, and we don't have to go that far." According to Adkins, Curtis was angry and wanted him to leave their home, but he refused. During the argument, she placed the gun beneath his left arm. When he told her to give it to him, she fired.
