The Detroit Lions now have a substantial cushion in terms of financial stability heading into their first game of the 2026 campaign. This will allow Brad Holmes and the rest of the front office more flexibility in whatever direction they see fit whether that is in-season moves or in preparation for the contracts they will need to negotiate next offseason.
But it is also an indicator of how much faith the team has put into their top two players. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell have each restructured their contracts without changing how vital they are to the squad.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (14) practices during mini camp at Meijer Performance Center in Allen Park on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
The Lions have restructured the contracts of wideout Brown and offensive tackle Sewell, creating about $35.6 million in salary cap ***** e, per Spotrac. The news was announced on September 12, just one day ahead of the Lions' season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

HOLMES TOWNSHIP - Wynford used its retro act of a strong rushing attack to snap a two-game losing streak and beat Buckeye Central 41-6 in Northern 10 play Friday night.

"We came out and were physical tonight," first-year Wynford coach Andy Amlin said. "We lacked focus the last two weeks and I thought we had that. I thought we executed offensively a lot better than we had."
The hosts took a 14-0 lead thanks to Wells' two-yard burst and Lutz's 18-yard run in the first quarter. Wells then ripped off a 63-yard touchdown with 5:18 left in the first half for a three-score margin.

In 2026, the Cubs' starters have been a major storyline. While the bullpen's struggle is the biggest issue, the rotation has been concerning. The pitching struggles have severely impacted the team in the second half of the season. When looking at the playoff picture, their lead has diminished, and both San Diego and Arizona are within three games of Chicago. However, there is hope for the Cubs starters.
Chicago has had a very up-and-down year from their starters. Injuries have plagued the team, as nearly all pitchers miss time. A busy trade deadline had things looking promising. While a few have had good starts, the team has struggled to find consistency. That said, the Cubs' starter hierarchy has clearly shifted. If Chicago wishes to make a run in the playoffs, relying on the top three Cubs starters needs to be the move.
Clay Holmes has been the top Cubs starter since he joined the team. With Chicago, he is 2-3 with a 3.51 ERA. The ERA is inflated by his last start, in which he allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings. Without that game, he was showing his ace potential. Down the stretch of the season, Holmes will need to show his talent and give the Cubs valuable length.
The other newcomer, Kevin Gausman, has also been solid since joining Chicago. His most recent start against the Brewers was rough, allowing six earned runs. He has had mixed results in his seven starts, with a 5.31 ERA. However, he is giving good length, going six or seven innings in most starts. Additionally, his valuable playoff experience makes him a key piece of the Cubs rotation.
Of the three starters, Matthew Boyd is the only one who has been with them all year. Boyd has struggled with injuries and inconsistency, but still has given valuable innings. Like Gausman, he can go fairly deep into games. He is 8-4 with a 4.03 ERA in 109.1 innings. His experience with Chicago could see him start one of the first two games come playoff time.

ESPN and Marquee Sports Network reporter Taylor McGregor has had a very eventful few days.
On Monday night, McGregor earned rave reviews for her reporting on ESPN during a power outage that delayed a Florida State-SMU college football game at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.
And on Wednesday, McGregor was yelled at by a security guard during a live radio hit on Chicago's 104.3 The Score.
McGregor, a Chicago Cubs sideline reporter for Marquee, was on 104.3 The Score to talk about the Cubs ahead of Wednesday night's game against the Brewers in Milwaukee. As McGregor shared her thoughts on the Cubs with Spiegel & Holmes hosts Matt Spiegel and Laurence Holmes, a security guard interrupted her and told her to move the car she was parked in.
"He's yelling at me. Sorry, I'm getting yelled at for sitting on the side of the street," McGregor explained to Spiegel and Holmes.

Genius, madman, salesman: Elon Musk is the subject of a nearly four-hour documentary at Venice that seeks to unmask the billionaire provocateur with outsized global influence in business, politics and even outer ****** e.
"Musk," premiering Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival, seeks to reframe the story of the world's richest man whose stated ambitions include colonising Mars, transitioning the planet to sustainable energy and protecting free speech, laying bare the "unreality of his narrative," Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney said.
"I wanted to understand what game he is playing," says director Gibney at the start of the film about the man long considered a rule-breaking genius whose erratic behaviour and shift to right-wing politics has alienated -- and confused -- many.
Gibney said Musk's story was "oddly familiar" to him, having treated other larger-than-life characters in past films, from the executives behind the Enron scandal to former Theranos boss Elizabeth Holmes.
"His story is the story of an old wine and a new bottle. His story turns out to be the story of the confidence man, the stock pumper," said Gibney, adding that much of what Musk says "has an air of unreality around it".

Katie Holmes and artist Jason Bard Yarmosky have taken their increasingly public romance to Lake Como, sharing a collection of affectionate photographs from an Italian getaway.
Yarmosky posted a vacation carousel Sept. 6 showing the couple sightseeing, swimming and relaxing together on the water. Holmes appeared in a white bikini while sunbathing on a speedboat and later joined him for a photograph in coordinating black outfits.
The vacation arrived five days after Holmes publicly celebrated Yarmosky's birthday with an Instagram post featuring the artist. She called him "the best of the best" alongside a candid photograph of the pair laughing with their heads together.
The two were first linked in July and have since attended several events as a couple. The Lake Como photographs mark their most personal public look yet at the relationship, and Holmes followed Yarmosky's boat pictures with another vacation carousel of her own the next day.
Yarmosky captioned his vacation carousel, "Life is a friend of art." The collection included views across Lake Como as the couple spent time on a speedboat and in the water.

It was just not meant to be on Monday for the Braves. Kyle Schwarber once again went deep for the only run in the game, but the story was the dominance of Jesus Luzardo during his complete game shutout against the Braves in a 1-0 win for the Phillies. Grant Holmes was outstanding once again, but the offense never could get going.
As a result, the Braves earned a series split with the Phillies. While the offense still had plenty of struggles, the kept their division lead the same. Furthermore, they earned the tiebreaker by winning the season series, essentially making the division lead five games. You have to feel that makes the weekend a success, as long as the Braves continue the momentum as the schedule remains tough over the next few weeks.
With plenty to break down from the weekend, Mark Bowman looks at the performances of Holmes, Didier Fuentes and Ronald Acuna Jr.
Here is plenty more on the the excellent weekends from J.R. Ritchie and Connor Essenburg.
Reynaldo Lopez looks to be ready to return on Wednesday for the Braves. Furthermore, Bryce Elder is currently limited to the bullpen due to ongoing knee discomfort.

While Maryland's offense was easily its busiest unit during the Terps' 62-0 opening week win over Hampton, it's Maryland's defense that has numbers getting those around football talking.
According to Pro Football Focus, Maryland's defense received the sixth-highest grade of all Division I teams over the weekend as it held Hampton to just 85 total yards.
The Terps' defensive line was individually the eighth-highest graded unit in the country.
From the defensive line, redshirt sophomore edge rusher DD Holmes stood out on the tape, recording his first two sacks for Maryland. Those sacks came despite him playing just nine snaps on the night — with the big impact in little time earning Holmes the fourth-greatest individual defender grade for PFF of the week.
Setting aside the manner in which it happened, a physical win against Hampton likely didn't alter any predictions on Maryland's win total for the season. Now, the Terps are five wins away from hitting .500 for the season — which 64% of Testudo Times voters predicted would happen in our most recent SBNation Reacts poll.

Thirty four days before Elizabeth Holmes reported to federal prison, she invited a skeptical film crew into her life and allowed cameras inside her home.
The footage became You Can See Everything, a previously secret A24 documentary directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. Its first teaser shows Holmes sitting across from Fielder and insisting that she has no reason to deceive him.
"I'm always being real," Holmes tells him before the camera pulls back to reveal her infant daughter nearby. PEOPLE reports that the scene was filmed before Holmes surrendered to Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas on May 30, 2023.
A24 says the documentary begins 34 days before Holmes goes to prison and follows a journey lasting three years. The film was finally revealed during a surprise screening at the Telluride Film Festival on September 6.
The teaser opens with Holmes and Fielder facing each other on a couch. "I don't have anything to deceive you on," Holmes tells him before saying she is engaging with him as another human being and has no reason to lie to him.

MIAMI — Even when Javier ****** ad doesn't possess his best command, the right-hander finds a way to put the Chicago Cubs in position to win.
Assad worked around a season-high five walks as he grinded through 4 2/3 innings Saturday against the Miami Marlins, ultimately limiting enough damage in the Cubs' 6-5 win at loanDepot Park. Ryan Zeferjahn threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save as a Cub.
The victory ****** ures the Cubs will maintain their hold of the National League's first wild-card spot over the Philadelphia Phillies as they go for the sweep Sunday with right-hander Clay Holmes on the mound.
"I try to stay calm and under control and work my game, and I've got the best defense behind me, and I let them work, and it came up huge," Zeferjahn said. "The biggest thing for me, honestly, is not chasing strikeouts. Like I said, I've got the best defense, and when you get a one-pitch out to start the ninth inning, so much weight's off your shoulders right there. So just focusing on that and then stay in the attack mode after that."
Making his first big-league start in a month, ****** ad gave up three hits and three runs, one of which scored when reliever Caleb Thielbar immediately surrendered a two-run home run to Griffin Conine, the first batter he faced.

Cubs reportedly showed interest in Red Sox starter before Nationals trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Chicago Cubs did a pretty good job of acquiring starting pitching help at the trade deadline.
Right-hander Kevin Gausman was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays, and Clay Holmes from the New York Mets.
Before those moves, the Cubs added lefty David Peterson in a deal with the Mets.
This better positions Chicago's rotation before the postseason. However, those weren't the only three pitchers they targeted.

BUFFALO, N,Y. (AP) — Chance Morrow caught his third touchdown pass from Elijah Holmes with 4:23 left in the game and the Buffalo Bulls beat the Albany Great Danes of the FCS 21-17 on Thursday night.
Morrow finished with seven receptions for 48 yards for the Bulls (1-0). Holmes was 26-of-47 passing for 189 yards and hit Morrow for touchdowns of 9, 4 and 5 yards.
Kickoff, which had originally been scheduled for 7 p.m. local time, was delayed about 2 3/4 hours due to inclement weather in the area.
Rahshan La Mons ran for a 4-yard gain that made it second-and-goal from inside the 1 with 1:26 left, but a false start moved the Great Danes (1-1) back outside the 5. On fourth-and-goal, Stevie Bracey tackled Luke McAuliffe at the 3 to seal it.
Holmes led the Bulls on a 15-play, 75-yard drive that took more than 6 1/2 minutes off the clock and made it 7-7 when he hit Morrow for a 9-yard TD with 11:23 left in the first half.

While the Detroit Lions are preparing for the 2026 season, the latest NFL rumors project that the team could lose one player. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Lions have committed more than $1 billion to star players, including running back Jahmyr Gibbs, which leaves veterans Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta fighting for new contracts this upcoming season. Graziano does not expect a new contract to materialize before Week 1, but Lions general manager Brad Holmes expresses his desire to keep all star players from the 2023 draft class, including LB Jack Campbell, for a "long time."
"We still want to keep those guys around; those plans haven't changed," Holmes said Wednesday, via Richard Silva of The Detroit News. "There's a couple factors that we've still got to sort through. But in terms of us wanting those guys around? Absolutely. Hopefully, we can get that done."
"Hopefully" is a strong word for the Lions. Detroit is walking into the season without triggering new deals for Branch or LaPorta, who are both coming off season-ending injuries. Both are also set to become unrestricted free agents next offseason.
Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta (87) makes a catch against Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu (4) during the first half at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md. on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
Unfortunately, it will probably come down to who can stay healthier and make an immediate impact this upcoming campaign. After all, Branch and LaPorta have proven to be top-5 athletes when healthy. However, the former second-round pick and 2024 Pro Bowl safety may have an edge here. The Lions were forced to release cornerback Terrion Arnold this offseason due to the latest investigation, and if they give up another elite secondary threat, it could become detrimental to the team's defense.

Brian Branch, Jack Campbell, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta are the four remaining members of the Lions' 2023 draft class still in Detroit. General Manager Brad Holmes has made clear his desire to keep them "around for a long time."
Campbell has signed a four-year, $81 million extension, and Gibbs signed a three-year, $67.5 million extension.
The Lions continue to work on deals for LaPorta and Branch.
"We still want to keep those guys around; those plans haven't changed," Holmes said Wednesday, via Richard Silva of The Detroit News. "There's a couple factors that we've still got to sort through. But in terms of us wanting those guys around? Absolutely. Hopefully, we can get that done."
Branch (Achilles) and LaPorta (back) had their 2025 seasons cut short by injury. The defensive back will miss at least the first four games on the reserve/PUP list, while the tight end was fully cleared before training camp.

On Wednesday, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes spoke to the local media for the first time since the team made the decision to cut Terrion Arnold following his arrest in connection with an incident earlier this year that resulted in eight felony charges. It was an opportunity for Holmes to face some criticism on the way the Lions handled Arnold's situation and built the cornerback room behind him.
One of the main lingering questions was why the Lions' opinion on Arnold shifted throughout the process. When his name was first connected to the incident—before his arrest—the Lions organization backed Arnold and his version of the story.
"We got all the information that says he wasn't involved," coach Dan Campbell said during the owners' meeting in April. "That's what we know, that's all we know, and that's really all I can say. As far as I know, it's not a big deal. It seems like he still wasn't involved with this."
The Lions then opted to waive him days after his arrest. Holmes didn't offer many details on what changed, simply noting that when they got more information, they made the move they felt was right.
"The whole situation obviously was unfortunate. Look, the kid made a mistake," Holmes said. "The more information that we got throughout the process, that was the result of us doing what the best and right thing was for the club, which was: move on and move forward."
