Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. hurt his left shoulder during joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Thomas connected with Trevor Lawrence on a deep touchdown on the first play of team drills, getting behind Tampa's defense with relative ease.
He landed on his shoulder as he corralled the ball, remaining on the ground momentarily as he clutched at the injury. He was able to get up on his own power and went back in for another play, but went to the sideline and was checked on by the training staff shortly afterwards.

A new study from researchers at Mass General Brigham, Boston University, and the Concussion & CTE Foundation found that at least one in four former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma.
The findings, published Tuesday in The British Medical Journal, examined former NFL players from the hard-shell helmet era and suggest the prevalence of CTE among professional football players is significantly higher than in the general population.
Researchers identified 878 former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021. Of those, 235 donated their brains for study, and 215 of the donated brains, or 91.4%, showed evidence of CTE.
Because CTE can only be diagnosed after death through brain tissue examination, researchers estimated a range for how widespread the disease may have been among all deceased former players. Their most conservative estimate found at least 24.5% of former NFL players who died during that period had CTE. The upper estimate reached 97.7%, though researchers said both extremes are unlikely and the true prevalence is likely somewhere in between.
"Community brain bank studies have shown that CTE affects less than 1% of the general population," said Dr. Daniel Daneshvar, lead author of the study and chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mass General Brigham. "To find that somewhere between 24.5% and 97.7% of NFL players from that time period had this progressive brain disease is a wake-up call for the NFL and scientific communities."

For decades, Natalie Portman has been one of our most cerebral stars. A 1999 Vanity Fair cover, promoting "The Phantom Menace," asked whether the then-17-year-old might "choose Harvard over Hollywood." She managed to do both, earning an Ivy League degree and an Oscar. Her characters in movies from "Jackie" to "May December" are often overthinkers, and her Instagram book club picks tend toward high literature.

Who better, then, to serve as the heroine of a Rachel Cusk novel?

Cusk, the experimental novelist, is set to publish "Life of M," about an unnamed actress coping with feelings of alienation and depersonalization, on Aug. 25. Cusk's work, like the well-loved "Outline" trilogy, favors deep excavation of inner turmoil over what might be called "plot," and "Life of M" is no exception. Still, the obvious similarities to the known facts of Portman's life have earned the book plenty of buzz.

To wit: M, a former child star who received her greatest acclaim for playing a ballerina, is raising children, seemingly solo, in Paris. All of this checks out, and Portman's putative connection to Cusk — she selected Cusk's last novel, 2024's "Parade," for Natalie's Book Club, and both actress and author live in Paris — lends the enterprise a juicy overlay of gossip.

There's no public information indicating Portman's involvement in the project, or whether she approved it at all. (Portman's rep and the book's publicist at Farrar, Straus and Giroux did not respond to requests for comment.) And if people are reading "Life of M" as a document of truth, it may be in part because the novel so confidently places its reader within restricted access zones. We see M through the eyes of a narrator, an unnamed person who has obtained M's permission to document her life. And so we accompany M to a spa, where she and a younger actress chitchat about their peers and discuss Hollywood's gender pay gap, and to an interview at a chic restaurant, where she observes strangers snapping her picture. The access Cusk grants extends deep into M's mind as well: With her friend, M ponders how she might help a new generation of actresses despite her own "ennui" about the industry; with the journalist interviewing her, M is burdened "by the impossibility of anyone ever understanding what she is."

The project of this book is to help us to know a person who rejects examination, just as journalists have struggled to crack Portman, who avoids discussing her personal life in interviews. "Life of M" is not the sort of novel that one can "spoil," but suffice it to say that M ultimately makes her displeasure at the narrator's project plain: Being under a writer's gaze is, for her, intolerable. M comes by this aversion to fame honestly. We're informed that "starring in a film as a child had immediately brought her childhood to an end," and that press coverage of her entanglements as an adult have strained her relationship with her family. We aren't even through the preseason, and the Commanders will need to be careful with their running back group. Thursday at training camp practice, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, aka Bill, caught a pass "and seemed to pull up a little bit," as reported by Ben Standig.
The Commanders have already lost Jerome Ford. Ford, who had signed in the offseason from the Cleveland Browns, was injured during last week's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. During the broadcast, you could see for just a second that Ford was clearly hurting while on the field. Sure enough, an examination revealed Ford's hamstring injury was severe, as the Commanders have already declared Ford to be placed on the injured reserve, and he is out for the season. Ford had gained 813 rushing yards in 2023, and in 2024 he averaged 5.4 yards per carry on his 104 rushing attempts.
RB Rachaad White (hamstring) was hurt on his final play of the joint practice vs Miami. Quinn said he’s “certainly close” but won’t play Saturday.
Another free agent signing, Rachaad White, has also been nursing a sore hamstring. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered authorities to take imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan to a private hospital in the capital for a medical examination, following months of concerns from his family and personal physicians about his health and access to medical care, his lawyers and party officials said.
A three-judge panel ordered that Khan be taken to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad in the coming days and examined by a medical board that will include specialists and one of his personal physicians, Faisal Sultan.
The court also ordered prison officials to allow Khan weekly meetings with family members and telephone calls with his sons. Khan's family has been struggling to secure access to him and have him examined by physicians of his choice.
Hours after the order, authorities allowed one of Khan's sisters to visit him. Pakistan had barred visitors earlier this year after receiving intelligence reports about a possible attack on the prison where he is being held.
The order came months after Khan petitioned the court, asking to be transferred from a high-security prison in the nearby garrison city of Rawalpindi to a hospital and to be allowed access to his personal physicians, family and lawyers.

NEW DELHI: With India's growing injury list putting the spotlight on the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), its head VVS Laxman has pushed back against the scrutiny surrounding the Bengaluru-based facility, insisting that injuries are an unavoidable part of a cricketer's career and that the focus should be on monitoring players rather than finding scapegoats.

The CoE has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks amid concerns over rehabilitation timelines, fitness ******* sments and communication between its sports science team and the national selection committee. Several key players are currently dealing with injuries, with Jasprit ******* rah, Sai Sudharsan, Harshit Rana, Nitish ******* ar Reddy and Washington Sundar among those facing fitness concerns.

Laxman, however, defended the institution's broader role, stressing that it should not be reduced to a rehabilitation centre.

"CoE is not merely a rehab centre. There are bigger roles to play for it in helping cricketers achieve excellence," Laxman said at a press conference in Bengaluru on Sunday.
