ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) is one of the top energy names in President Donald Trump's financial disclosures from earlier this year. The stock is up about 27% so far this year. But does a presidential trade make it a buy today? Let's break down what's actually driving the stock.
Exxon benefits directly from rising oil prices amid the Iran war. Its upstream segment was projected to see a multibillion-dollar earnings lift for the second quarter compared to the first, driven almost entirely by higher realized prices rather than any change in production. That's the logic behind buying an oil major right as a Middle East conflict escalates.
Exxon's balance sheet gives it room to lean into higher prices. Net debt relative to EBITDA sits under 1x, among the lowest in the industry, and the company is on pace to repurchase roughly $20 billion of stock this year. Guyana production just hit a quarterly record above 900,000 barrels a day, and the company has applied to drill dozens more wells there.
In the Permian Basin, Exxon is now the largest operator following its Pioneer acquisition and expects to roughly double output there by 2030. Longer term, natural gas tied to data center power demand is another growth lever bulls point to, with McKinsey estimating data centers could eventually account for more than a tenth of total U.S. power demand.
There's a demand question sitting underneath the price spike. The IEA sees global oil demand softening this year, and even OPEC, which tends to run more optimistic, trimmed its own demand growth forecast. If the Iran-driven premium in oil prices fades if another ceasefire takes place, some of Exxon's near-term earnings boost fades with it.

NBC Sports Philadelphia is budgeting to add a courtside voice to its Sixers broadcasts ahead of LeBron James's arrival this season, network vice president of content Alexandra Matcham told the Philadelphia Inquirer.
"I think you need a voice on the court where Alaa [Abdelnaby] and Kate [Scott] can't be to give us insight, do pre- and postgame interviews, **** ysis, all of that," Matcham said. "It's a very hard job to do."
For years, NBC Sports Philadelphia and its predecessor, Comcast SportsNet, used reporters like Serena Winters and Taryn Hatcher to fill that kind of role for the Sixers. That stopped in 2020, when the network began eliminating in-arena and in-game reporting jobs across its properties as basketball and hockey seasons wrapped that year, according to Crossing Broad's Kevin Kinkead. Hatcher stayed on covering the Phillies for five more seasons after that before her contract lapsed at the end of 2025 and NBC Sports Philadelphia cut the position rather than renew it. Kinkead later reported that the network and Hatcher had discussed a freelance arrangement that would have let her take on other work at the same time, but the talks ended without an agreement over what Kinkead's sources described as a standard contract disagreement, not any real conflict between the two sides.
That left NBC Sports Philadelphia without anyone in that role for the entirety of the Sixers' 2025-26 season, and the roster now taking shape gives the network far less room to go another year without one.
"If you get a generational talent on your team, it could easily become a situation where the people that work for us are burnt out by December, and you don't want that," Matcham said. "You need extra help."

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday held the main interest rate at a range between 3.5% and 3.75%. The decision came after a two-day meeting, as the central bank keeps a firm focus on its dual mandate and seeks to foster price stability amid conflict and "elevated uncertainty" in the Middle East, according to a statement.
The decision was made with a 9-3 vote, with Neel Kashkari, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis; Beth M. Hammack, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland; and Lorie K. Logan, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas dissenting in favor of a 0.25% hike to the federal funds rate, according to the central bank.
"I asked for a good family fight, and I got one," Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh said of the dissenting votes Wednesday in response to a question during his second press conference as chair. "My view is that's the better way to get policy right; that's our North Star."
Warsh, who has served as chairman for about eight weeks and four days — not that he's counting, he quipped Wednesday — noted discussions during the two-day meeting were "collegial and constructive."

Cascading risks linked to the highly volatile geopolitical landscape are driving demand for insurance products that safeguard day-to-day business operations, according to a GlobalData poll. Meanwhile, the availability of insurance products to protect against such impacts remains compromised as insurers struggle to adapt to the rapidly changing risk landscape.
According to a poll conducted by GlobalData on Verdict Media sites in Q2 2026 —which garnered 107 responses from industry insiders—supply chain insurance (41.1%) is the product set to see the highest demand due to geopolitical tensions. The second most sought-after product is cyber insurance, commanding 20.6% of responses.
Businesses overwhelmingly view the fallout of geopolitical tensions through the lens of indirect operational disruption, seeking products that safeguard daily commercial operations. In contrast, demand for specialist transport and direct **** et protection is lower. This highlights that organisations are deeply concerned about trade route blockages, state-sponsored cyberattacks, and collateral revenue losses that can have a cascading effect on operations, thus threatening day-to-day business continuity.
Ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe are creating specific trade bottlenecks such as in the Suez Canal and Strait of Hormuz, leading to widespread shipping reroutes, while alternative maritime corridors are emerging. Meanwhile, the US's shift toward economic nationalism—marked by sudden tariff hikes, export restrictions, and sanctions—is pressuring international trade supply networks.
Although demand exists, paradoxically, insurance capacity is compromised as many insurers pull products from the market fearing that the risks are unquantifiable. This highlights a key challenge for the industry, whereby only insurers with the most risk appetite are willing to adapt their underwriting strategies and product offerings. This requires providers to tighten policy wordings and exclusions around tariffs and sanctions, as well as stress-test products to avoid catastrophic losses from a single event. In addition, real-time geospatial tracking is gradually gaining traction for more accurately **** sing risks and improving underwriting.

The United States resumed airstrikes inside Iran Wednesday night in retaliation for Tehran's attempted surprise ballistic-missile attack on American forces, as an Iran expert warned that the regime has become increasingly willing to test Washington despite its weakened military capabilities.
"The strikes are a powerful response to yesterday's attempted Iranian attack on U.S. forces based in the Middle East," U.S. Central Command said as the new operation began, according to The **** ociated Press.
The renewed strikes marked the first U.S. attacks inside Iran since President Donald Trump paused the bombing campaign Friday after 13 consecutive nights to allow diplomacy another chance. Iran's missile launch shattered that brief pause and returned the conflict to direct exchanges between Washington and Tehran.
Trump had signaled the retaliation earlier Wednesday, saying the United States would hit Iran "very hard."

Oil prices have just come off a fresh two-month high as the crude oil market has tumbled this week amid signals of de-escalation in the U.S.-Iran conflict.
Despite the slump in crude prices and the extreme volatility in the past five months, the refined product market continues to tighten with refining margins at record highs because the supply of petroleum products is much tighter than crude supply.
Refining margins held at record highs even as crude oil prices soared last week to $100 per barrel. That's because global gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel supply is tightening and has been tightening for months amid a combination of factors, most stemming from the wars in Iran and Ukraine.
While crude oil futures largely reflect market hopes and fears for prices ahead, the gasoline and diesel refining margins, supply, and prices reflect the real-time situation with refinery throughput, global fuel flows, and availability in various markets.

July 28 (Reuters) - Royal Caribbean raised its annual profit forecast on Tuesday after beating quarterly estimates, sending its shares up 5%, ‌even as it factored in a modest hit to bookings due ‌to the travel disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.
Geopolitical uncertainty linked to the U.S.-Iran conflict has made some travelers wary of booking cruises, hurting demand for certain itineraries and adding to fuel-cost pressures for operators.
Royal Caribbean said bookings for some sailings, including Mediterranean itineraries, have been modestly hit, primarily in the third quarter.
"When ‌you include a cruise plus the airfare (to get to the ports), it's a little bit more costly (for American consumers)," CEO Jason Liberty said, adding travelers are either putting off their trips to next year or opting for the Caribbean instead of Europe.

A copy of the letter is available to download here. The second quarter of 2026 was driven by a sharp rally in AI-related stocks, although gains were concentrated in highly cyclical semiconductor, memory and optical companies. Unlike earlier AI rallies led by megacaps and strong earnings growth, some smaller technology stocks rose 200% to 300%, making the advance more fragile. Software and services stocks declined as investors questioned the impact of AI disruption. Oil prices also rose during the Iran conflict before retreating, briefly increasing inflation and interest-rate concerns. Despite the volatility, economic data and corporate earnings remained strong. S&P 500 earnings are projected to rise 25% in 2026 and 15% in 2027, with the market trading near 20x earnings. The Fund continues to focus on financially strong companies with durable earnings growth that can perform across different economic conditions. Mason Gooding reflected on his childhood, which was heavily influenced by his father's acting career and subsequent spotlight
Cuba Gooding Jr.'s long absences for work led to "speed-parenting," Mason said
"You're so positive and charismatic in these interviews, and then you come home and it's a different guy," Mason recalled thinking of his father
Mason Gooding is opening up about growing up while his father, Cuba Gooding Jr., was in the spotlight.
The Scream 7 star, 29, reflected on the conflicting versions of his father he experienced during his childhood while on Dylan Sprouse and Brenden Columbus's Wildmen podcast on July 28. Cuba, the 58-year-old son of singer Cuba Gooding, gained fame and acclaim as an actor with roles in Boyz n the Hood in 1991 and Jerry Maguire in 1996 — welcoming Mason in the same year as the latter.

US stocks fell on Wednesday after Iran launched surprise attacks against the US, and as investors counted down to the Federal Reserve's policy decision and earnings from two big spenders on AI.
The S&P 500 (^GSPC) lost 0.8%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) dropped 1.1%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI), which includes fewer tech stocks, fell by a steeper 1.5%, or over 800 points, as oil prices rose amid renewed tensions in the Middle East.
SK Hynix's (000660.KS, SKHY) second quarter profit rose by 557% year over year, the company reported after the US market close on Tuesday. That was less than Wall Street expected, prompting concerns that the artificial intelligence boom may be slowing. In Asia, investors once again dumped chip stocks such as Samsung (005930.KS) and SK Hynix, driving the KOSPI Composite (^KS11) down nearly 6% on Wednesday.
Two "Magnificent Seven" quarterly results stand as another big catalyst for the AI trade, with reports from Microsoft (MSFT) and Meta (META) dropping after the bell. It could be a make-or-break moment for tech stocks after Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) capital expenditure guidance last week spooked markets, resurfacing fears about the AI boom's sustainability.
In the Middle East conflict, Iran launched an "attempted surprise attack" on Tuesday, according to US Central Command, reengaging fighting between the US and Iran for the first time since a pause in hostilities on Friday. Oil prices jumped, with Brent crude (BZ=F) gaining more than 7% to trade back over $90 per barrel.

DeVonta Smith has never hidden his loyalty to the Boston Celtics, but even the Philadelphia Eagles' star wide receiver can appreciate what the 76ers are attempting to build. Smith was asked Wednesday about the Sixers trading for Jaylen Brown and signing LeBron James, two moves that significantly altered the balance of power in the Eastern Conference.
"Looks like the Sixers are trying to go win one," Smith said. "Can't be mad at that."
Smith grew up supporting the Celtics in Amite, Louisiana, and has maintained that allegiance throughout his career with the Eagles. He attended Boston's NBA Finals games and predicted the Celtics would defeat Philadelphia during the teams' recent playoff series. Brown's departure from Boston and arrival in Philadelphia creates an unusual conflict for Smith. The four-time All-Star spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Celtics before being traded to the Sixers in a package centered around Paul George and draft compensation.
Philadelphia followed that deal by signing James to a two-year contract. James, 41, is entering his 24th NBA season and will pursue the fifth championship of his career alongside Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.
Philadelphia has not won an NBA championship since 1983 or reached the Eastern Conference finals since 2001. Injuries, postseason disappointments and roster turnover have repeatedly prevented the franchise from advancing beyond the second round. Adding Brown and James eliminates any ambiguity about the organization's current timeline. The Sixers are prioritizing an immediate championship run and accepting the financial and roster risks that accompany it.

July 29 (Reuters) - The top U.S. commander for the Middle East has warned troops that cellphone videos shared online can help Iran target American bases, and sources told Reuters some deployed personnel could soon be ordered to surrender their phones.
Any crackdown on mobile communications would add a new dimension to the conflict for the thousands of ‌U.S. troops in the region, many of whom still rely on phones to periodically message loved ones and **** ure them they are well.
Admiral Brad Cooper, in a previously unreported letter, said ‌Iran was benefiting from being able to see the success or failure of its strikes in near real-time by searching news reports or online posts by journalists referencing "reactions, photos, and footage from the cellphones of our troops."
"The direct, unavoidable cost of this open-source intelligence could be measured in the lives of American service members and civilian residents in targeted Gulf countries," Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, wrote in his July 28 letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

WS Amati Global Innovation Fund, managed by a UK-based equity management firm from AMAti Global Investors, released its second quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter is available to download here. Financial market performance in the second quarter was dominated by geopolitical conflict and enthusiasm for AI. Significant investments across all elements of AI resulted in exceptional growth for related companies, ranging from chip producers to companies constructing data centres. The fund outperformed the MSCI ACWI benchmark due to its diversified exposure beyond headline AI firms, with semiconductor and equipment suppliers being major contributors. At the same time, software and IT services faced investor skepticism due to fears of automation despite long-term potential. The firm is confident in the innovation frontiers to capture long-term growth opportunities in automation, semiconductors, and advanced technologies. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, WS Amati Global Innovation Fund highlighted MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) as a notable contributor. MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) is a leading technology company that offers advanced foundational technology solutions to semiconductor manufacturing, electronics and packaging, and specialty industrial applications. On July 24, 2026, MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) closed at $329.18 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $22.23 billion. MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) posted a one-month return of -20.87%, while its shares gained 221.68% over the past 52 weeks.
WS Amati Global Innovation Fund stated the following regarding MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"The broadening of interest away from the highly concentrated AI headline companies, such as Nvidia, proved to be a helpful environment for the Fund, providing a period of material outperformance against the MSCI ACWI benchmark. Our four top contributors were all caught up in the excitement to some extent, with three being semiconductor producers and one being an equipment supplier into that industry. The latter,MKS Inc. (NASDAQ:MKSI), provided the biggest single boost to the Fund's returns and is a notable beneficiary of innovation in the design of modern chips. Rather than single layers of tiny transistors, many modern chips have multiple layers like a wafer biscuit, and electrons need to travel up and down through these layers. MKS' products help to make this possible. AI's insatiable appetite for memory, particularly High Band Memory (HBM), has created a wave of greater demand for the chips which MKS helps to create."

Companies such as PTC and Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK) are often foundational for the clients that use them, and they are embracing AI to improve their offering and the efficiency of their customers.
