Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT) and The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE:HD) are both booking real tariff refund windfalls, but reporting and using the money in noticeably different ways, CNBC reported.
Walmart CFO John David Rainey said the company is eligible for roughly $2.9 billion in refunds, has yet to receive just under $100 million of that, and saw Walmart U.S. gross profit grow 1.6% from the boost; Rainey said Walmart plans to use the funds to lower prices for consumers, with the impact showing up in the current fiscal third quarter.
Home Depot said it received $730 million in tariff refunds during its fiscal second quarter, using about $685 million to reduce the cost of goods sold, lifting gross margin by 0.3 percentage points. CFO Richard McPhail called that "the vast majority" of what the company expected. Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE:LOW), by contrast, said it would not use its refund to cut prices, with CEO Marvin Ellison saying the company wants to "deliver strong profitability for our shareholders" instead.
Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT) can turn its tariff refund into both lower prices and solid sales. The firm expects roughly $2.9 billion in tariff refunds and has already used part of the benefit to lower prices on about 11,000 products. Walmart can attract price-sensitive shoppers and increase traffic. It can also strengthen its market share if those lower prices generate more purchases.
The Home Depot, Inc. (NYSE:HD) has taken a consumer-focused approach to its tariff refund while still protecting its margins. The company expects to receive roughly $730 million in tariff refunds and plans to apply about $685 million toward its cost of goods. That approach gives Home Depot room to pass savings to customers while retaining a financial benefit, potentially helping it compete more aggressively for home-improvement spending.

In just a few weeks, Pete Crow-Armstrong is expected to join Ernie Banks in a select group: Chicago Cubs players who have won National League Most Valuable Player honors.
Yet PCA has already one-upped Mr. Cub in one category.
Crow-Armstrong became the youngest player in franchise history to hit 40 home runs, reaching the honor on Sunday, Sept. 6 with a low line drive just inside the right field foul pole at loanDepot Park, a game-tying fifth-inning shot off Miami Marlins right-hander Tyler Phillips.
While the Cubs would go on to lose the game 10-3, there's little to stop the Summer of PCA.
He's now second in the major leagues with 40 homers, trailing only Philadelphia DH Kyle Schwarber's 42, and his 8.6 WAR leads all position players. At 24 years, 165 days old, Crow-Armstrong is 49 days younger than Banks was when the Hall of Famer hit his 40th home run in 1955, the first of his eight consecutive All-Star seasons.

MIAMI — Even when Javier ****** ad doesn't possess his best command, the right-hander finds a way to put the Chicago Cubs in position to win.
Assad worked around a season-high five walks as he grinded through 4 2/3 innings Saturday against the Miami Marlins, ultimately limiting enough damage in the Cubs' 6-5 win at loanDepot Park. Ryan Zeferjahn threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save as a Cub.
The victory ****** ures the Cubs will maintain their hold of the National League's first wild-card spot over the Philadelphia Phillies as they go for the sweep Sunday with right-hander Clay Holmes on the mound.
"I try to stay calm and under control and work my game, and I've got the best defense behind me, and I let them work, and it came up huge," Zeferjahn said. "The biggest thing for me, honestly, is not chasing strikeouts. Like I said, I've got the best defense, and when you get a one-pitch out to start the ninth inning, so much weight's off your shoulders right there. So just focusing on that and then stay in the attack mode after that."
Making his first big-league start in a month, ****** ad gave up three hits and three runs, one of which scored when reliever Caleb Thielbar immediately surrendered a two-run home run to Griffin Conine, the first batter he faced.

It was recently revealed that Pat McAfee would bring his kicking contest back to College GameDay on ESPN for a fourth season, despite McAfee hinting twice last December that the series could be over for good.
McAfee funded the high-dollar-reward contest all on his own for the first three seasons and handed out more than $6 million. As Awful Announcing's Sam Neumann explained, "Either a fresh sponsorship agreement covering those costs or a renegotiated financial arrangement folded into McAfee's rumored $60 million-plus annual ESPN extension emerged as the two most plausible ways to bring the contest back without leaving McAfee personally on the hook for another year of six-figure kicks."
During Saturday's season debut of College GameDay at LSU in Baton Rouge, McAfee announced that a sponsorship agreement had indeed emerged. The Home Depot, which has sponsored College GameDay for 24 years, will match the dollar amount that he pays out for the entire 2026 season.
Additionally, the 33-yard kicking contest has officially rebranded as "Pat McAfee's 'Kicking is easy' contest" on College GameDay. The contest had been loosely referred to as that in the past, but now it's also listed that way on the ESPN graphic.
"This year, we have a massive update," McAfee said as kicking contestant Bruce was about to attempt a kick. "A company that has given millions and millions of dollars to college sports said, 'We want to help you in this whole thing.' Home Depot has said they will match anything that I put up [for the kicker] for the rest of the season."

There aren't too many dividend stocks that yield more than 5%. Those that do can be separated into high- and low-risk categories, and most investors, especially those who rely on passive income, are looking for low-risk options.
Realty Income (NYSE: O) boasts a 5.3% dividend yield, and it's as reliable as they come. Here's why it's my pick for the top S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) stock with a yield above 5%.

Realty Income is a real estate investment trust (REIT), a structure that pays out 90% of earnings as dividends. REITs often play a big role in a dividend-focused portfolio, although there are all sorts of REITs, some of which are high-risk and some that don't pay high yields.
REITs buy and lease properties, and they typically have an industry focus. Realty Income is a retail REIT, meaning it predominantly leases its properties to retailers. Its tenant roster includes some of the largest and most stable retailers in the U.S., such as Walmart and Home Depot. Grocery and convenience stores make up more than 20% of its total portfolio, and it services other essential retail categories like pharmacy and home improvement, which is why its tenant base is so reliable.

Germie Bernard has already caught Aaron Rodgers' attention; however, now the rookie is getting a comparison that carries some serious weight in the Pittsburgh Steelers. Former linebacker Vince Williams sees something familiar in Bernard's game, the same kind of versatility that helped JuJu Smith-Schuster make an immediate impact as a rookie.
And that comparison makes the Steelers' receiver situation even more interesting. Bernard is pushing for snaps, Roman Wilson is trying to finally put his talent together, and Rodgers appears convinced both young receivers will matter once the regular season arrives.
March 25, 2026; Tuscaloosa, AL, USA; Wide receiver Germie Bernard stretches during Pro Day in the Hank Crisp Indoor Practice Facility at the University of Alabama.
On September 3, Williams said Bernard reminds him of the "JuJu mold," according to Steelers Depot. Williams pointed to Bernard's ability to operate underneath, create yards after the catch, and work from multiple receiver spots as reasons the rookie could quickly become a useful weapon for Rodgers and new head coach Mike McCarthy.
"He's a rookie, but I think he's kind of in the JuJu mold. If guys remember how JuJu came on – that rookie season. That rookie season he had veteran wide receivers, a star wide receiver, a veteran quarterback. He could play the three-receiver role. He'll be underneath. Aaron Rodgers loves the underneath passing game, and you see his run-after-catch ability. You see his ability to get in there and catch the ball and, like, turn a five-yard catch into a 10-yard play."

KYIV, Aug 29 (Reuters) - At least 37 people were killed after a Russian drone attack on a Kyiv-area ammunition depot sparked a detonation, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Saturday, vowing ‌to punish suspected negligence in the second such incident in two months.
The deadliest Russian strike in the ‌Kyiv area this year came as Moscow's air attacks on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding region dragged into a third straight day, killing residents, damaging homes and derailing daily life.
Dozens were also injured and hundreds evacuated from the area of the strike late on Friday on the village of Myla, Zelenskiy said, where nearby infrastructure including residential buildings and a facility for the elderly and people with disabilities suffered "significant damage".
The attack sparked widespread fires, officials said. Among those killed was the head of a ‌neighbouring village who rushed to help.

The Pittsburgh Steelers face a difficult decision with Will Howard as they prepare to finalize their quarterback room for the 2026 season.
The sixth-round pick has shown flashes during the preseason, but his inconsistent performances have complicated his chances of becoming Aaron Rodgers' backup. Former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch believes Pittsburgh could lose Howard if it tries to place him on the practice squad.
Oct 26, 2025; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard warms up for a game against the Green Bay Packers at Acrisure Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Barry Reeger-Imagn Images
Howard entered training camp competing with Mason Rudolph and Drew Allar for a place behind Rodgers. Rudolph brings valuable NFL experience, while Allar has also impressed enough to strengthen his roster.
Howard, meanwhile, struggled against the New York Jets. He threw two interceptions during Pittsburgh's 17-0 preseason loss, failing to create the separation he needed in the backup competition. That performance did not help his immediate case. However, Batch believes the Steelers must consider more than Howard's latest outing when deciding his future. NFL news platform Steelers Depot reports Charlie Batch's comments on the situation.

The Department of Defense continues to dole out lucrative contracts as the Pentagon looks to modernize and upgrade its supply chain. Boeing on Monday won a $131 billion contract covering the F-15 fighter jet fleet. The Missile Development Agency granted Parsons a contract extension worth more than $500 million. General Dynamics landed an armored vehicle contract. Elsewhere, William Blair lifted its 2027 targets for Booz Allen Hamilton after the company closed a $720 million acquisition.
Defense stocks were mixed early Tuesday.
The Air Force on Monday awarded Boeing (BA) a $131.23 billion contract to support the F-15 Eagle Crest program, which oversees the F-15 fighter jet fleet. The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract covers aircraft production, systems integration, modernization, upgrades, retrofits and sustainment. The contract also calls for Boeing to establish organic depot maintenance capabilities for F-15 Eagle weapons systems for the Air Force, Air National Guard and other Department of Defense customers.
"Organic depot maintenance" refers to government facilities that do not rely on support from commercial contractors.
The DOD said Boeing will perform the work at its St. Louis, Missouri facility and it expects to complete it by August 2037. The ordering period for the contract runs to Aug. 24, 2031, with an option to extend to Aug. 24, 2036.

The Boston Red Sox (72-59) and the Miami Marlins (67-65) continue their respective postseason pushes tonight when they take the field at loanDepot Park in Miami. The Red Sox won the series opener last night, 4-2, to stay within six games of first place Tampa Bay in the AL East and further strengthen their hold on the second Wild Card spot in the American League. Miami is third in the NL East at 67-65 but they remain 9.5 games behind the Braves in the division race and four back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League.
Last night's game remained tight throughout primarily because Boston managed just a single hit in 14 at bats with runners in scoring position. Miami struck first in the second inning when Otto Lopez drove home Jakob Marsee with a sacrifice fly, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Boston answered in the fifth when Jarren Duran doubled and later scored on Mickey Gasper's RBI double to tie the game. The Marlins regained the lead in the seventh on Xavier Edwards' RBI single, but once again, Boston answered. Wilyer Abreu doubled in the eighth and eventually scored on a wild pitch, knotting the game at 2-2. The game was decided in the ninth. Anthony Seigler, who entered the game with only 12 RBIs on the season, delivered the biggest hit of the night, lining a go-ahead RBI triple to right field. Nick Sogard followed with an RBI single to provide an insurance run and give Boston a 4-2 advantage. Aroldis Chapman closed the door for his 30th save of the campaign. The Sox have now won four in a row.
Rookie Payton Tolle (8-6, 3.08 ERA) gets the ball today for the Sox. The southpaw takes the mound after six days of rest. In four August starts, Tolle has allowed six earned runs (25 innings pitched). Boston lost against the Diamondbacks in his last start (5 IP, 3ER) after wining in his seven previous starts. Tyler Phillips (3-6, 3.67 ERA) will be on the ******* p for Miami. MIAMI — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 4-2 win over the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park:
1. The Red Sox struggled to score, going 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position and leaving 10 men on base.
But they still posted their 33rd come-from-behind win. With the game tied 2-2 in the ninth, Mickey Gasper drew a leadoff walk against Marlins reliever Pete Fairbanks, who then left the game with an injury. Tyler Zuber replaced Fairbanks and allowed a go-ahead RBI triple to Anthony Seigler.
2. Seigler had not started a game in eight days, but he got the job done. Last month, Patrick Sandoval called Seigler — who plays with a ton of energy — the Red Sox' "spark plug."
3. The Sox improved to 72-59 overall and 38-27 on the road. It was an impressive win, overcoming a 2-1 deficit in the eighth against the Marlins, who are a strong home team with a 41-26 record here. Miami went 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base.

The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TJX) and Ross Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROST)'s shares have diverged in performance in 2026. Year-to-date, the former is down by 8.9% and the latter is up 30%. Cramer, on August 17th, discussed the divergence in the share price. He lamented the fact that The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TJX) was suffering despite performing well and discussed the firm's CEO in relation to the share price movement. On the flipside, the CNBC TV host attributed Ross Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROST)'s price performance to its CEO:
"Walmart and TJX, which are the acknowledged two best, have been the worst. And it's really rather interesting to see the best trade, not really as well, like Ross Stores has a fantastic CEO, I don't know if anyone remembers him from when he was at Boot Barn, Jim Conroy. But holy cow, is he good. And he has moved that stock up. . .Jim Conroy's come in there and he's just crushed it. In the meantime, TJX, which is doing so well as a company, people don't like. So there's a lot of front seat, back seat, Lowe's better than Home Depot, Target better than Walmart, Ross better than TJX. Almost a change in the guard except for the fact that the guard isn't as good."
On the 19th, The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TJX)'s shares closed 4.2% lower after the firm reported its fiscal Q2 earnings in the morning. As is the case with other retailers, the firm's narrative also surrounds the question of whether the current consumer weakness will affect its operations. During its fiscal Q2, The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TJX)'s comparable same-store sales grew by 4% and the firm also hiked its full year profit margin guidance to 11.2% and EPS to $4.09 to $4.13.
However, while the full year margin guidance was hiked, The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TJX)'s Q3 margin guide of 11.8% to 11.9%, which was rather tight and generated speculation about the possibility of heightened global shipping tightness and higher domestic wages affecting the firm's stock. Additionally, the year-to-date price gains have also led to a forward P/E multiple of 27 which is at the high end of the historic range to leave little room for error. Similarly, The TJX Companies, Inc. (NYSE:TJX)'s Q3 EPS same store sales and EPS guides also missed estimates to hint that perhaps the troubles had already arrived.
Shifting to Ross Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROST), while both it and Ross are off-price retailers, the latter's shares have performed much better. The stock closed 4.4% higher on the 21st after the firm reported its earnings on the previous day. The results saw Ross Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROST) beat revenue and earnings by a wide margin and grow its operating profit even if the impact of tariff refunds was excluded. Additionally, comparable store sales grew by a strong 10% and managed ****** ped up its full year earnings guide. At the same time, Ross Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROST) can also suffer from rising domestic wage floors and non-discretionary inflation. If the firm sees comparab

Home Depot's earnings beat looked great on paper, but **** ysts on the call kept circling one large one-time gain to see if the company's core profitability is really holding up.
Home Depot (HD) stock has struggled over the past twelve months, but its latest earnings report sent shares higher on what looked like a solid beat, with sales up 5.7% for the quarter. When **** ysts got management on the line, however, they weren't focused on the headline numbers. They kept circling back to one central, awkward question: was the company's strong performance real, or was it an illusion created by a large, one-time $685 million tariff refund?
The Margin Math Had a $685 Million Asterisk
The core of the investment case was tested immediately. The market was already questioning whether Home Depot's profitability actually missed expectations once you stripped out the tariff refund. This isn't just an accounting debate; it's a direct challenge to whether the underlying business can handle rising costs. One **** yst framed the worry bluntly, referencing "discussion in the market this morning" about a potential miss if the refund were excluded.
Management's response was direct and numerical. They explained the $685 million refund was about a 145-basis-point gross impact to margin. Of that, roughly 60 basis points offset 'unplanned pressure from fuel, energy and other product input costs,' and another 60 basis points of mix impact from a recent acquisition ate into the rest, leaving a net benefit of about 85 basis points, which flowed through to the quarter's 25-basis-point year-over-year gross margin gain. The argument was that this was a 'market-borne benefit' used to absorb market-borne costs, allowing them to maintain value for customers. It was a confident answer that provided a clear breakdown of the moving parts, rather than a general **** urance.

Home Depot (NYSE: HD) just reported financial results for its fiscal second quarter (ended Aug. 2). Revenue of $47.9 billion and adjusted diluted earnings per share of $4.92 both came in ahead of Wall Street **** yst expectations. Shares were up following the announcement, even though the management team kept guidance unchanged.
The retail stock has been disappointing in the past five years, trading up just 7% during that time (as of Aug. 19). However, it does a fantastic job of returning capital to shareholders. Home Depot currently pays a dividend yield of 2.67%. And it has raised the quarterly payout in 17 straight years, with a dividend going to shareholders in 157 consecutive quarters.

If there's a habit I've picked up from watching markets, it's that when everyone is looking at the loudest trade, I start wondering what's happening in the quiet corners.
The biggest clues aren't always found in a soaring stock that's already overvalued or a famous **** yst calling for a breakout. Sometimes they're buried somewhere else that investors never bother to open. I'd put this one in the last category.
The latest 13F filing from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust shows a new $352.7 million position in The Home Depot (HD). At the same time, the trust cut its stake in Berkshire Hathaway by about $818 million.
That's not pocket change, and it's certainly not the kind of portfolio move I'd scroll past without asking why.
Why? This is big money moving from one of the market's most iconic investments into a home-improvement giant. There must be a story hiding underneath the numbers. The trust just bought the shares while everyone else seems to be waiting for the housing market to come back to life.

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin continues to get plenty of preseason accolades with the unveiling of another college football preseason award watch list on Thursday. The Buckeye signal-caller has already appeared on several All-American teams, as well as the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm preseason watch lists, and now his name is among those on the Davey O'Brien preseason watch list.
The Davey O'Brien Award has been around since 1977, but it was changed to honor the top college football quarterback in 1977 after the death of O'Brien. BYU's Jim McMahon was the first to take home the award, and now Sayin is hoping he is able to be the next Ohio State player to win the award.
Sayin led the nation in completion percentage last season and went to New York as a Heisman finalist as a redshirt freshman. He should be more comfortable and have more command of the offense with plenty of weapons around him this fall, so he has a good chance of having an even more productive season.
Somewhat surprisingly, only one Ohio State quarterback has won the Davey O'Brien Award, and that occurred when Troy Smith was honored after the 2006 season.
Like many other college football postseason awards, the Davey O'Brien Award will be announced during ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 11.

While both retailers are exposed to the same difficult housing environment, Lowe's remains more dependent on the do-it-yourself customer, making consumer confidence, household budgets and housing affordability particularly important indicators for traders.
The company is scheduled to report its second-quarter 2026 results on August 19, one day after Home Depot. That sequencing could make Lowe's report especially important for investors looking for confirmation of whether the weakness in home improvement is stabilizing or becoming more entrenched.
The key issue is whether Lowe's can continue taking market share even if the broader home improvement market remains broadly flat.
Lowe's delivered a relatively solid fiscal first quarter. Sales increased to $23.1 billion from $20.9 billion a year earlier, while comparable sales rose 0.6%. The company benefited from strong spring execution, a 15.5% increase in online sales, and continued strength in appliances, home services and Pro sales.
Reported diluted EPS came in at $2.90, compared with $2.92 a year earlier. However, the quarter included $96 million of pre-tax expenses related to the acquisitions of Foundation Building Materials and Artisan Design Group. Adjusted diluted EPS increased 3.8% to $3.03.

Fifth-year punter Jackson Ross was named to the 2026 Ray Guy Award preseason watch list. The Ray Guy Award recognizes the nation's top collegiate punter in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
The Augusta Sports Council established the award in 2000 to honor College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Ray Guy. The 2026 Ray Guy Award winner will be announced in December during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
Statistics considered in selecting the Ray Guy Award winner are net punting average, percentage of punts inside the 20-yard line and percentage of punts not returned.
The 6-foot-4, 204-pound Ross enters his fifth season with the Vols.
He has totaled 6,382 yards on 147 punt attempts. Ross' longest punt was 71 yards in 2023 and is averaging 43.4 yards per attempt.

Home Depot's sales improved during the second quarter as customers focused on smaller projects during the summer months with the U.S. housing sector still mired in a slump.
Revenue increased to $47.86 billion from $45.28 billion, edging out the $47.24 billion that Wall Street had expected, according to a survey by FactSet.
Globally, sales at stores open at least a year, a key indicator of a retailer's health, climbed 1.7%. In the U.S., comparable store sales rose 1.3%.
"Our second quarter results exceeded our expectations," Chief Financial Officer Richard McPhail said Tuesday. "We saw broad based demand across the business as customers continued to engage in smaller projects."
Customer transactions slipped 1% in the quarter, but the amount shoppers spent rose to $92.50 per average receipt from $90.01 a year earlier.

Investors in Home Depot (HD) stock were greeted by a surprise on Tuesday when CEO Ted Decker said he was taking a brief medical leave that will last a few months. The timing comes only days before the home improvement behemoth releases fiscal second-quarter results on Aug. 18.
But there is a key nuance here for investors. Decker has not resigned, and Home Depot has put in place two very experienced executives to split Decker's duties. Ann-Marie Campbell, senior executive vice president of U.S. stores and operations, will handle operations, while CFO Richard McPhail will handle finance and the company's Pro subsidiaries. For now, this looks more like a brief governance problem than a change to the underlying investment thesis on Home Depot.
