True, the 27-year-old Toronto native has kicked around since he was drafted by the Rangers in the ninth round of the 2021 draft out of Arkansas State. True, he joins Tampa Bay after hitting only one homer and three extra-base hits in his final 28 games – though he batted .292 – with Miami since being activated from the injured list, which he was placed on due to lower back strain in June.
Tampa Bay is Hicks' fourth organization in six seasons of professional baseball. The lefthanded hitter may stay put for a while. Breaking through offensively the way he has this season -- .282, 14 homers and 62 RBI -- combined with team control through 2030 are reasons why Rays' fans should feel good. Maybe a sigh of relief is in order as well given how the position has chronically underperformed. A larger sigh will be in order when Hicks rediscovers his power stroke again.
In acquiring Hicks, who is making $790,000 this season, the Rays sent three prospects to Miami: 24-year-old infielder Brayden Taylor (Rays' No. 16), 23-year-old RHP Jacob Kisting (No. 26) and 21-year-old shortstop Adrian Santana (No. 27). The Mets need to stop pretending this season can still be rescued. That means trading Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams before the deadline. None of those names should be moved willy-nilly. Bichette was supposed to become part of the next core, Peralta was acquired to stabilize the rotation, Weaver has been one of the more dependable arms on the staff, and Williams still carries the reputation of a proven closer. But the MLB standings matter more than the original plan.

When a star player or new coach joins a team, it's customary that they'll be involved in some ceremonies for the other sports teams in the city. That's why it was no surprise to see new Miami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis throw out the first pitch for the Miami Marlins back in May.
Willis' first pitch was tough to watch, as he would've thrown behind a right-handed hitter in the batter's box.
While the quarterback clearly struggled with the task, Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley showed Willis how it's done, as he threw out the first pitch for the Marlins' battle with the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday at LoanDepot Park.
Hafley's first pitch was pretty solid. There may not have been much velocity there, but at least it got to the catcher. It may have even been a strike.
Considering the coach and quarterback's relationship, there will surely be some ribbing regarding the outcomes of the two heaves.

Thousands of Scottish football fans, the Tartan Army, paraded through Miami on Monday in a distinctive homage to the local Marlins baseball team.
Starting in Little Havana, supporters donned kilts, Scotland jerseys, and cone hats, chanting about 'super' John McGinn and Steve Clarke.
Their march from the Ball & Chain bar to LoanDepot Park was met with enthusiasm by Miami locals.
With the arid Miami weather, some Scots opted for the signature “taps aff” look, with the scent of an abundance of sun cream and lager in the air.

When Duke vs. Michigan was announced, there was a ton of excitement for the matchup to be at Madison Square Garden. A few months later there will be a venue change.
One of the biggest non-conference college basketball games of the 2026-27 season will be headed south in the winter. But not in a regular stadium that houses a hardwood court.
In a weird set of circumstances, the Duke-Michigan game is now expected to be played at loanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins, according to CBS Sports. "The game date remains Dec. 21. The contracts haven't been signed, but sources this week put it close to 100% that the game gets moved to the MLB ballpark in southeastern Florida."
"It's really close to being finalized," one source said. "The game is going to be played at the baseball stadium barring something drastic happening," another told CBS Sports.
Why would there be a switch from NYC to Miami? The answer is simple, with broadcast rights being a factor.
"The decision to leave New York was forced upon both teams after a broadcast rights dispute immediately surfaced following Duke's late April announcement regarding its innovative, multi-year deal with Amazon that will pay the school many millions of dollars in exchange for a three-game package of premium non-conference matchups. The Blue Devils are scheduled to face UConn in Las Vegas, Gonzaga in Detroit and, once this can officially get ******* oned up, Michigan in Miami next season."

Duke's deal with Amazon is unique to say the least. Taking three games out of the non-conference schedule to create another revenue stream is the type of forward-thinking more schools will start adopting in the future. With Michigan on the docket, facing the defending champs was a huge draw for the state of college basketball.
Now that MSG is off-the-books, it doesn't diminish the matchup. But it might be time to explore the possibility of an NFL stadium that could be converted into the Final Four floor. Imagine this game being played at somewhere like AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
