When Sunderland were awarded a penalty following Ezri Konsa's impromptu wrestling match with Dan Ballard, it felt like a massive opportunity to break the deadlock against the notoriously watertight Gunners as Enzo Le Fée lined up his spot kick against David Raya.
There was little wrong with the Frenchman's attempt — firmly struck and aimed towards the corner — but the Spaniard made a superb save to deny Le Fée his second success from twelve yards inside a week. And when everyone's favourite villain Bruno Guimaraẽs duly fired a venomous dipping shot past Robin Roefs barely minutes later, it felt like the classic one-two punch and it ultimately defined the game.
Sunderland more than held their own in this contest; we looked sharp, combative and were able to fashion a number of decent chances against the defending champions, but the finishing touch eluded the Lads on this occasion and that somehow made the loss even more frustrating.
We know we're capable of giving the league's big guns a run for their money on any given day, and occasionally emerging victorious, but during what could easily be a "difficult second season", we need to find ways to bridge the gap and to continue to eke out points from tricky positions.
A disappointing outcome. The 0-2 scoreline might've felt slightly harsh and Reinildo's late red card was a sickener, but the way the game panned out wasn't entirely unexpected, given ******* nal's current status and Sunderland's ongoing attempts at evolution.

As Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver Alec Pierce continues to ramp up following offseason ankle surgery, head coach Shane Steichen provided some good news after Thursday's practice.
Pierce had been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list for nearly all of training camp, going through the rehab process. Up to this point, he had taken part in individual work.
However, according to Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan, Steichen said that Pierce was a full participant on Thursday and took part in the team portion of practice.
On Tuesday of this week, GM Chris Ballard said that the "plan" was still for Pierce to be available for Week 1.
While we have to see how next week unfolds and what Pierce's practice status is at that time, he appears to be trending in the right direction.

Right now there are a few players who were signed by NFL teams that are now attempting to exploit what they see as a loophole and return to play college football. A lot of NFL and college coaches and front office people have been asked about it and many of them have some strong opinions. Most notably Colts GM Chris Ballard who said plainly that he thinks it's the "stupidest s--t I've ever heard".
Tuesday it was Raiders GM John Spytek and ****** istant GM Brian Stark's turn in front of the media. The subject came up to them. Stark answered first and attempted to be diplomatic about it before backing away from it.
"Yeah, I mean, I can't fault the players for if it's permissible and that's available to them," said Stark. "I haven'treally thought much about it to be honest with you. We've been pretty busy here the last few weeks, so Ihaven't put too much thought into it. But if it's available to them, if that's an option, it's hard to fault themfor doing it. But that's about all I got on that."
After that it was Spytek's turn and he had the perfect response -- "I'm not giving you any Chris Ballard quotes."
The line drew big laughs from Stark and the room full of media. Spytek was, of course, referring to Ballard's line about how stupid he thinks it is. Ballard went further even, adding "Your entire life, you fight to get up to the NFL. But now we're gonna go back? OK! That makes a lot of freakin' sense."

Bristol City will travel to Deepdale this evening to take on Preston, as they look to pick up back-to-back wins in the Championship.
The Robins got their first three points on the board on Saturday, beating Portsmouth 2-1 in front of a packed Ashton Gate. Lorent Tolaj opened the scoring by netting his first Championship goal, before Jason Knight headed home a second on the hour mark. A late penalty for Pompey made for a nervy final few minutes in the South West, but Michael Skubala's side ultimately got over the line.
Preston, meanwhile, have lost their opening three matches to Bolton, Wolves and most recently Charlton Athletic, giving cause for concern amongst fans ahead of taking on a side that will be aiming for a play-off spot come May, whilst the Lilywhites are more worried about securing their spot in this division for next season.
Preston have underperformed their xG so far this season, creating enough chances to have scored three goals, but only netting two so far. They have also only registered an average of two shots on target per match, the lowest in the league. By contrast, the Robins have netted four goals in their last two outings, against Birmingham City and Portsmouth, with both Tolaj and Dom Ballard opening their accounts in the process.
Bristol City have picked up four points from their last two trips to Deepdale; it arguably should be six, but Anis Mehmeti failed to make his chances count last year, meaning the game finished 0-0. Max Bird, Yu Hirakawa and Nahki Wells were on the scoresheet the year before, as Liam Manning's side picked up a 3-1 win. The Pittsburgh Steelers finalized their initial 53-man roster, but keeping four quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Drew Allar, came with severe systemic trade-offs.
On a recent episode of the "Locked on Steelers" podcast, host Christopher Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sounded the alarm on how ****** ding signal-callers has severely compromised positional depth across the rest of the team.
"If you keep four quarterbacks, it's going to leave some holes somewhere that you're going to have to fill," Carter explained. "And lo and behold, they kept four quarterbacks and there are some serious holes that got to be filled."
The structural crunch is felt most acutely on the offensive line and in the secondary. The Steelers enter the regular season carrying just three active offensive tackles: starting left tackle Troy Fautanu, likely starting right tackle Dylan Cook, and rookie Max Iheanachor.

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have found a trade partner for one of their quarterbacks, specifically Mason Rudolph or Will Howard, following an NFL roster update on cutdown day.
One day after trading away QB2 Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Miami Dolphins released QB3 Cam Miller as apart of final roster cuts, which should put them in the market for a backup quarterback and in the perfect position for a trade with Pittsburgh.
Rudolph looked better than Howard during the preseason and likely earned the QB2 role behind Aaron Rodgers in 2026. His experience as both a starter and a backup with the Steelers and Tennessee ***** ans would be valuable behind Dolphins starting quarterback Malik Willis.
If Miami preferred a younger backup, Howard would make the most sense here. He didn't exactly look great during the preseason but he was once heralded as a future starting quarterback in Pittsburgh. That was until Allar came to town and likely stole that responsibility right out from under him.
Mike McCarthy may have claimed that all four Steelers quarterbacks earned roster spots, but if a trade partner offers a deal the team can't refuse, it's time to part ways with either Rudolph or Howard

The Buffalo Bills (3-0) approached the 2026 NFL preseason with the goal of making sure that the starters were ready to go and that some of the depth options had the chance to show their best stuff. Buffalo's last preseason matchup came on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2) and while none of the starters played, the Bills were able to come out on top in dramatic fashion.
The Bills beat the Steelers 28-27 on Thursday in their preseason finale thanks to the efforts of players like quarterback Shane Buechele and wide receiver Skyler Bell. Buechele finished the contest having completed 26 of his 38 passes for 196 yards while Bell caught seven of his 10 targets for 49 yards while also taking his lone carry for a 28-yard touchdown.
On the other side, the Steelers are still evaluating quarterbacks Drew Allar and Will Howard to see who will be the backup behind starter Aaron Rodgers and neither one seemed to separate from the other through their play in this game.

Ben Roethlisberger's arm ligaments turned al dente sometime around 2019. The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense behind him remained strong. That juxtaposition created the broken path that leads us to 2026. That's the year where the Steelers, in a league where most teams will have only two quarterbacks on their active roster, plan to keep four passers at the 53-man cutdown day.
That's what first-year head coach Mike McCarthy told ESPN's Brooke Pryor to expect when rosters as finalized August 30 at 6 p.m. ET. His QB1 will be a soon-to-be 43-year-old Aaron Rodgers, heavily diminished from his MVP peak. His veteran backup will be Mason Rudolph, exiled to Nashville in 2024 to bring his special brand of underwhelming football to the Tennessee ***** ans before reuniting with the team last year. Behind them, for now, is the duo of mid-round draft picks Pittsburgh picked up as lottery tickets in hopes they may have dug a diamond from a coal mine: Will Howard (sixth round, 2026) and Drew Allar (third round, 2026).
The need for four quarterbacks can be traced back to the end of the Roethlisberger era. This team was too competent to fall to a top 10 draft pick as the two-time Super Bowl champion's arm weakened and his average target distance dropped to league lows. Stopgap solutions followed; Mitchell Trubisky. Kenny Pickett. Rudolph. Russell Wilson. Justin Fields. Now, it's Rodgers.
When Pickett, the first quarterback selected in one of the worst quarterback drafts of all time, failed, the Steelers bought in to retread passers just good enough to keep the team at slightly above average. Playoff appearances followed. Playoff wins did not. Between weak draft position and the franchise's general distaste for big free agent splashes -- missing out on Kirk Cousins (good!) and Sam Darnold (not as good!) -- Pittsburgh went from renting to owning its place in contender's limbo.
2026 has marked the franchise's desire to stay there. Mike Tomlin, architect of zero losing seasons in 19 years at the helm, parted ways with the team. Rather than start fresh with a rising young head coach, the team hired Mike McCarthy, a man with a 126-80-2 record in the regular season since 2011 and a 6-9 playoff record. It brought back Rodgers, who can no longer use his legs to extend plays and has been forced into a diet of short, quick passes to avoid pressure even as his otherworldly arm talent remains in flashes of "remember when?" And, importantly, rather than casting his lot with Howard and Allar in case of injury and letting the chips fall where they may, McCarthy is keeping Rudolph as QB2.

In the opening drive of the second half, Heidenreich rumbled into the end zone from nine yards out, extending Pittsburgh's lead to 11. It marked the Navy product's first professional touchdown.

Before practice on Monday, McCarthy denied a report late on Friday that the Steelers have decided to keep both young quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar on their 53-man roster, saying he feels the team's final two preseason practices this week and last game, against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, will factor into the decision.
"I haven't been a part of any conversations about the 53 that's been decided already," McCarthy said flatly.
Of course, the Steelers have been working through scenarios to relieve the tension of having four quarterbacks that the team seems to genuinely want to keep. It's very rare for teams to keep four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. More than half the league only kept two last year.

It was audacious, instinctive and almost impossible to defend. The sort of finish that momentarily silences a large home crowd because everybody inside the ground needs a second to understand what they have just seen.
It put City 2–1 ahead with five minutes remaining and appeared to have completed an excellent away performance. Then came the fifth minute of stoppage time, a crowded penalty area and an ******* istant referee convinced that Jason Knight had handled the ball.

Will Howard's terrible preseason performance against the New York Jets was definitely one to forget. It was so bad that some even believed Howard threw away a roster spot with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the young quarterback doesn't seem particularly concerned about the horrendous outing.
Speaking with the media following the two-interception performance in the preseason loss, Howard downplayed his struggles and claimed that how he bounces back is all that really matters.
"If you play quarterback in the NFL, you're going to throw interceptions," Howard said. "I've played quarterback my whole life and I've thrown a lot of interceptions. It comes with the game. I feel like I've been through enough and seen enough that getting down after one pick isn't going to help anything. It's all about how you come back. Obviously, you don't wanna have a [second interception], but you gotta come back after that."
For reference, the Jets, who hadn't intercepted a pass since August 22, 2025, had a field day with Howard, picking him off not once, but twice in the span of seven minutes and thirty seconds. Howard completed 10 of 15 passes for 74 yards and two interceptions to finish out the contest.
While you love to see how well Howard is handling adversity, the mistakes against the Jets were extremely costly in the 17-0 shutout loss. So much so that it makes you wonder if Drew Allar is the only realistic successor for this team.

Pittsburgh Steelers young quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar are expected to be the only QBs to play again next week against the Buffalo Bills, per Missi Matthews' pregame interview with head coach Mike McCarthy.
"We just felt this opportunity alone to play these young quarterbacks, that's the primary focus for us really coming out of the offseason program," McCarthy told Matthews. "We'd like to do it this week and probably do the same thing next week."
McCarthy revealed earlier this week that he has seen enough of Mason Rudolph. He knows what he has in the veteran.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Geno Smith capped a perfect one-series cameo by throwing for a touchdown and the New York Jets picked off a pair of passes in a 17-0 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday night.
Smith, who sat out New York's preseason opener with a sore left ankle, started and drove the Jets 69 yards to the end zone, the last 13 coming on a flip to a wide-open Jelani Woods. Smith, who played for the Jets from 2013 to 2016 and was acquired from Las Vegas in March, went 7 for 7 for 65 yards on the drive in what will likely be the 13-year veteran's lone exhibition appearance.
New York's defense, a major weakness during a 3-14 slog in 2025, kept young Pittsburgh quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar in check. Jets rookie edge rusher David Bailey, the second overall pick in this year's draft, dropped Howard for an 11-yard loss in the first quarter.
Perhaps even more promising for New York, the defense also found a way to catch the ball, something that didn't happen at all during the regular season a year ago when the Jets became the first team since the NFL started tracking the statistic in 1933 to go an entire year without a single pick.
New York intercepted Howard twice in the first half with the Steelers driving in New York territory.

Drew Allar shined in his first preseason games with the Pittsburgh Steelers following an up-and-down journey at Penn State. The third-round quarterback led touchdown drives on each of his first three possessions in a Steelers uniform and completed 10-of-13 passes for 153 yards, two passing touchdowns, and a rushing score. It was a good first impression for Allar, who looked comfortable in the pocket and didn't miss the easy throws he was knocked for in college.
Despite the strong first game, albeit the preseason, it didn't make former NFL offensive lineman and current FOX ******* yst Geoff Schwartz more optimistic that he is going to be the Steelers' next franchise quarterback.
"Drew Allar is unlikely to get a chance to be good in the NFL because he's not going to get an opportunity to play," Schwartz said via FOX Sports Radio. "If he's the third-string guy, when is he ever gonna play?"
Aaron Rodgers is solidified as the 2026 starting quarterback, and Will Howard continues to battle Mason Rudolph for the backup spot.
Allar is surely going to make the roster, but it doesn't appear that he's in play to be QB2. The lack of reps could hurt Allar's chances of proving to the Steelers that he's their guy moving forward, and Schwartz sees the Steelers picking a quarterback in 2027.

According to their ***** istant general manager Ed Dodds, the Indianapolis Colts currently plan on keeping backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., as they intend on keeping three quarterbacks and aren't wanting to detract from their current team (via The Athletic's James Boyd).
Now, if the Colts had gotten meaningful trade value back in a swap for Richardson Sr., who requested a trade earlier this offseason, then he would realistically be elsewhere right now to that generous suitor. That being said, such a trade doesn't appear to have materialized, and while a significant quarterback injury could certainly happen, most teams already have their backup quarterback plans in place entering the second week of preseason.
Colts longtime general manager Chris Ballard indicated earlier this offseason that the Colts weren't simply going to give away Richardson Sr., still believing he has value and upside. To be fair too, their starting quarterback Daniel Jones is coming off a late season torn Achilles and hasn't exactly been an 'NFL ironman' himself, even dating back to his days as a former franchise quarterback hopeful with the New York Giants.
While he clearly started out rusty, Richardson Sr. actually progressed nicely in his 2026 preseason debut, completing 11 of 14 pass attempts for 145 passing yards and an interception (*which should've been caught) to go along with his 53 total rushing yards and rushing touchdown on 6 carries against the New England Patriots. It was that dynamic rushing ability which doesn't play out as well in Colts camp, but was on full display in this past Thursday night's exhibition game.
In contrast, 2nd-year quarterback Riley Leonard, who is Richardson's competition for the Colts QB2 job behind Jones, had a fairly rough preseason showing in relief during the second half—and with only 1 career start under his belt, could arguably use a bit more seasoning before being anointed Indy's primary backup quarterback.
