EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Jaxson Dart received yet another concussion check in Saturday's 13-10 Giants preseason opening loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
The second-year quarterback fortunately cleared the protocol, returned to the game and threw a touchdown pass to rookie receiver Malachi Fields.
But it is beyond concerning that Dart's penchant for visiting the blue medical tent as a rookie bled right into his first game action since January. Even though Dart pushed back on being sent to the blue tent at all.
"As far as the blue tent," Dart said, "I really respect the rules and the thought the NFL has about keeping players healthy and reviewing things. But at the same time, I'm still puzzled by it just feeling like every time I get hit, I find my way in there, which at times I still try to wrap my head around.
"But that's all I'm gonna say about that situation," he added. "I'm really happy how the drive ended."

Minnesota Vikings linebacker Jamal Adams suffered a knee injury during his team's preseason opener against the New York Giants, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said after the game. O'Connell said the injury was "not good" and did not provide additional details.
Adams was tracking Giants receiver Calvin Austin while playing in coverage on a second-and-12 play when the injury happened. While following Austin's sprint across the width of the field, Adams stumbled and fell forward. After hitting the ground, he immediately rolled over onto his backside and grabbed his knee.

NEW BERLIN, New York: Lachlan Turner overcame a modest start to move into the lead on the second lap of the WMX Moto 2 in the Unadilla National. Along with her win on Friday, Turner swept the motos and extended her winning streak to 10 races after going eight-for-eight in the Australian WMX series.
Charli Cannon also had to come through the pack after starting outside the top five. She passed several riders in the opening laps and once she got into second around Taylah McCutcheon for second, she managed to hold the leaders pace.
Mayla Herrick scored her first overall podium in the WMX series with finishes of fourth in Moto 1 and third in the second moto. Her highly anticipated WMX debut in High Point ended with a crash and concussion in Moto 2 after she won the first race.
Jordon Jarvis overcame a modest start in back-to-back races. On Friday, she got some help after multiple riders crashed on the tricky track. Jarvis finished third in that race, but could only manage to climb to fourth in Unadill's Moto 2. She finished fourth after losing the overall podium on the tiebreaker (best finish in Moto 2).

Unfortunately, the start to their preseason might have given them some serious worry, with Jaxson Dart taking a brutal hit. As a result, he was even checked for a concussion in the tent, leaving fans worried about his status.

Sabally hasn't played for the Liberty since 23 June when she suffered a concussion-related injury against the Las Vegas Aces.

After a joint practice with the Tennessee ******* ans there's still no clarity for the San Francisco 49ers on their left guard battle according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Shanahan on Tuesday spoke with reporters after the 49ers wrapped up their joint practice with the ******* ans and indicated that nothing changed in the race for the fifth and final starting spot on San Francisco's offensive line. Entering practice it was veteran Robert Jones and second-year player Connor Colby who were the presumed frontrunners at the position with rookie Carver Willis potentially making his way into the mix. That was where Shanahan said things still stood after practice.
"I think it's too early to say," Shanahan said. "There definitely is a battle there. It's open for anybody. Those guys would probably be the lead at it. Love to get Carver in that, too. Him missing a week or whatever it was with his concussion made him out of it a little bit, but he's been out two practices in a row. It's still early. We want to see those guys in the games, too, but it's definitely a battle for us to see who gets that spot."
There's a distinct difference between an open battle with multiple good players and one hasn't been able to separate themselves, and an open battle with multiple players who aren't good enough to step into the vacancy. Colby and Jones have had some issues with the starting group, and now Shanahan is potentially resting the team's hopes on a fifth-round draft pick who is changing positions after playing offensive tackle in college.
San Francisco won't need to nail down a definite starter until Week 1, but the fact they're inside of a month to go until their regular season opener and the coaching staff is still awaiting a player to put a stranglehold on the starting LG job is not a great sign entering their preseason opener.

Practicing sliding is something that's usually ***** ociated with baseball, but it was a highlight for the football Giants at their training camp practice on Monday.
The promise that quarterback Jaxson Dart showed last year was tempered by the five times he had to leave games to be checked for concussions after taking big hits. Head coach John Harbaugh has stressed the need for more self-preservation since taking the job in January and those lessons seem to be taking hold.
Dart slid inbounds to end a run during a situational drill and he got a cheer from the Giants defense when he went down.
"Yeah, we've been begging him to do that for a while now, so I'm glad that he's starting to practice it," defensive end Brian Burns said, via a transcript from the team.

The San Francisco 49ers may have a problem on their hands as they search for a starting left guard, but the return of a rookie offensive linemen provides a new potential solution.
Rookie fifth-round pick Carver Willis was back in practice Monday after working through the NFL's concussion protocol. He was lining up with the second-team offensive line at left guard according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
That's a significant inclusion to the mix at left guard for the 49ers and offensive line coach Chris Foerster. Second-year seventh-round pick Connor Colby started training camp as the first-team LG, but he gave way to veteran Robert Jones who hasn't had a ton of success according to reports from the team facility.
Willis, an offensive tackle at the University of Washington, was supposed to start factoring in for the 49ers a week ago when he went down with a concussion. Now he's back and while he isn't up with the starters yet, his immediate insertion with the second group could portend a move up the training camp depth chart if he acquits himself well as a reserve.
It doesn't sound like the bar is high for someone to ******* ert themselves as the starter. Willis has the learning curve of a position change to deal with while also making the leap from college to the NFL. It's a difficult move, but not an impossible one, and it appears the 49ers are hoping he may be able to do it in Year 1.

Some cornerback help could be on the way to the Motor City.
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Detroit Lions tried out former Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers cornerback Trevon Diggs over the weekend.
Diggs was limited to just nine games played and seven starts last season as he suffered a concussion in an at-home accident and then had an injured reserve stint with a right knee injury.
While with the Cowboys, Diggs was a two-time Pro Bowler (2021, 2022) and a first-team All-Pro in 2021 when he led the NFL in interceptions with 11 picks. In his career, Diggs has totaled 242 tackles, 63 passes defended, 20 interceptions, a pair of forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one sack.
Diggs also suffered a season-ending ACL tear to his left knee, which ended his 2023 campaign after just a pair of games played. The former Cowboys second-round 2020 draft pick would return in 2024 to start 11 games before undergoing a second season-ending injury on his left knee to repair cartilage issues.

Troy Aikman took some brutal hits during his 12 years playing quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, racking up 10 documented concussions before he finally retired in 2001. Things got scary toward the end of his career when he suffered four concussions in just his last 20 starts. Aikman still calls two of those injuries severe.
Back then, the NFL didn't consider those head traumas as seriously as it does now, so he was constantly thrown back into games without any of the medical protocols or safety checks that players get today.
The best example happened during the 1993 NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers. Aikman took a knee to the head from a 49ers defender. According to reports, the hit caused temporary amnesia. He had to watch the film later just to see what happened.
Now at 58, Aikman openly admits he thinks about the long-term effects from time to time, but he doesn't let it ruin his life.

For most coaches, the issue of player concussions requires sympathy. Moving forward, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan will easily be able to empathize with players who have suffered head trauma.
In his first training-camp press conference following a July 11 automobile accident, Shanahan was asked if the severe concussion that he sustained will change his perspective on players who are dealing with the effects of brain injuries.
"Yeah, no doubt," Shanahan said. "I've been told so much by these guys, don't compare a sports concussion to an accident like this. I'm starting to realize that now. Just little things, like when they label things, like whether it's severe or mild. You hear someone has a mild one, I'm like, 'Oh, alright. It might be one game, but usually that's two.' Then you kind of learn those are just words. Each one's a little bit different. I definitely can relate to how scary it is when you don't know if you will feel right again. It's definitely made me more educated on it. Usually I just listen, and like, 'Tell me when, OK?' and I move on, but I understand it a lot better and what guys got to go through and the protocol to get back. There's not a protocol for me on paper, but it's really cool to be in a profession that knows what to do with those things. All the people that I need help from, it was already built in here. They've got a lot of experience with it, and it's been really good for me."
If anything, players need to be encouraged to not return until they're fully back to normal. Some players will try to hide their symptoms. Some will resist being evaluated. Some will tank the baseline cognitive exams so that it will be easier to be cleared to return. (Peyton Manning once admitted to doing that, before walking it back as a joke.)
Starting in 2009, when Congress got involved in the issue of brain health, the NFL began to take concussions very seriously. For the most part, it does. (There are still periodic lapses in the concussion-spotting process.)

The Pro Football Hall of Fame ceremony is normally a joyous time to honor the new inductees.
It is also a time to reflect on the new members' careers and lives, and sometimes it can be a sad occasion.
New Hall of Fame inductee Roger Craig, who played for the San Francisco 49ers during their dynasty run in the 80s, announced that he has dementia.
Craig believes he got the disease from concussions he had gotten over the years while playing. He and his family started to notice changes in him and chalked it up to old age.
"Over time, my family noticed it too and ultimately led us to seek answers from my doctor," Craig said. "Two things can be true: Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I could imagine. It helped shape the man I became. At the same time, we know more today about brain health than when I played, and I hope sharing my story encourages people to pay attention to their health and seek help when something doesn't feel right."

Luke Kuechly was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday afternoon in Canton, Ohio, after a week full of festivities.
He joined Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Adam Vinatieri, and Roger Craig, who were also inducted Saturday.
At 35, Kuechly became the second-youngest player inducted into the Hall. Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers was 34 when he was inducted in 1977.
Introduced by his father, Tom, Kuechly was inducted on the same field where he led St. Xavier High School to a state championship in 2007.
Known for his intense study habits, Kuechly was a five-time All-Pro linebacker, the 2012 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and 2013 AP Defensive Player of the Year during his eight-year career with the Carolina Panthers. Kuechly decided to retire in part to preserve his brain health after suffering several concussions.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was in a car accident this summer that left him hospitalized. The incident became a major news story not just because it happened, but because of how it was covered.
While the initial accident took place on July 14, it wasn't reported on until more than a week later. Given the extent of the injuries Shanahan suffered — Chris Simms said there was a chance the coach would lose his right eye in addition to the concussion, broken hand, broken nose, three broken ribs and the 40 stitches in his face — the fact that the story was kept quiet for so long was shocking.
The response drew criticism of ESPN, with Dan Patrick arguing, "This isn't journalism," regarding how ESPN was treating the story, and Dan Le Batard noting that the vagueness surrounding the situation only lent itself to more conspiratorial thinking. It was, simply, a mess.
On Saturday, Shanahan spoke with reporters and offered more details and perspective on the accident, explaining that he was using the autopilot feature in his car and had been looking for his phone when the collision occurred.
"I think everyone's done, to a degree, what I've done — dropping a phone, falling all the way to my back seat to where I fully have to take my eyes off the road," Shanahan said. "That's something that I normally wouldn't do. I've had autopilot for nine years, so I'm pretty comfortable with it. Who knows what happened when I turned around, whether it malfunctioned or whether I knocked it off; that's something that I don't know yet. But regardless, it's always your fault, whether you're on autopilot or not. You can't take your eyes off the road. It's a partnership driving; you don't just turn it over to a computer."

Newly enshrined Pro Football Hall of Fame running Roger Craig chronicled his illustrious career, as well as those who helped him along the way, during a pre-recorded speech Saturday afternoon in Canton, Ohio.
At the end of that speech, the 66-year-old San Francisco 49ers icon shared his latest chapter, which he revealed has included him navigating a vascular dementia diagnosis he said his doctors believe may be related, at least in part, to the concussions he suffered during his 11-season NFL career.
"The changes were gradual," Craig said. "At first, they were easy to dismiss as normal aging. Over time, my family noticed it, too, and ultimately led us to seek answers from my doctor. Two things can be true. Football gave me opportunities beyond anything I can imagine. It helped shape the man I became. At the same time, we know more today about brain health than when I played. And I hope sharing my story encourages people to pay attention to their health and seek help when something doesn't feel right.
"I want people to know this diagnosis doesn't define me. I am still Roger Craig. I am still a father, a husband, a teammate, a friend and someone who loves this game and the people who brought it to my life. If sharing my story helps even one family or one former player, then it's worth it."
Craig concluded: "Football gave me everything: opportunity, discipline, lifelong friends and a platform to grow as a man. This honor belongs to my parents, who started it all. It belongs to my wife, Vernessia, my children, and grandchildren, and it belongs to every coach, teammate and fan who is a part of this journey. I'm grateful. I'm grateful for this game, grateful for the people it brought into my life. I'm grateful I can stand before you today and call this journey a blessing."

The San Francisco 49ers personnel department has been busy as they deal with having 20 players currently injured. According to Wednesday's transaction wire, the team worked out several players before they signed wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge.
The 49ers officially terminated a pair of vested veterans in Cam Sample and Kevin Givens. They were injured/waived.

The 49ers have been thin at wide receiver since the beginning of the week. Since the week began, offensive linemen Brett Toth had an undisclosed injury, while Carver Willis was in the concussion protocol.
