Scott Bessent got bang for his buck on Wednesday. The decision to double to $4 billion the size of buybacks of the longest-dated bonds led the 30-year Treasury yield to plunge 0.1 percentage point, a bigger move than any day in the past year, and lit up leveraged areas of the stock market.

Talk about arriving in Test cricket with a bang. Just minutes after Manav Suthar bowled debutant Keshara Nuwantha to seal India's emphatic 165-run win over Sri Lanka in the first Test at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, heavy rain lashed the venue.

By then, however, the damage had been done, with the young left-arm spinner delivering a performance for the ages.

Suthar ripped through Sri Lanka's lower order in a sensational spell. In the 76th over, he bowled a three-wicket maiden, dismissing the resolute Sonal Dinusha (84; 128b, 8x4, 1x6), who was caught at leg slip by Dhruv Jurel, before removing Prabhat Jayasuriya for a duck off the very next ball. Though he missed out on a hat-trick, Suthar completed his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket by having Lahiru ****** ara caught behind.

His late burst earned him figures of 6-55 in 23.4 overs as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 206 in 77.4 overs while chasing an improbable 372. The 24-year-old finished with match figures of 10/131 in 45.2 overs after taking 4-76 in the first innings, making him the undisputed architect of India's victory and making the team's 600th Test memorable.

The victory also kept India firmly in contention for a place in the 2027 World Test Championship final. They remain fifth in the standings but improved their points percentage to 53.33 while Sri Lanka stayed sixth on 33.33. Australia currently lead the table, followed by South Africa. With one match left in the series, Sri Lanka can no longer win it but will aim to deny India a series victory in the second Test beginning on Sunday.

Chasing what would have been the highest successful fourth-innings total in Galle, Sri Lanka never threatened after beginning the final day at 84-4. While Suthar dominated proceedings, pacer Prasidh Krishna also played a key role, producing a fiery spell to finish with 2-16 from 10 overs.

Prasidh's second wicket came after an intriguing exchange involving Niroshan ****** wella. Amid constant chatter from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who challenged him to play the hook shot and jokingly suggested he could recommend him to his IPL coach ****** ar Sangakkara, ****** wella appeared distracted.

Attempting an ambitious stroke after backing away from the stumps, the left-hander top-edged to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and departed for 10.

Kuldeep Yadav, meanwhile, looked off-colour, returning figures of 1/38 from 11 overs, which could prompt discussions about giving rookie off-spinner Saransh Jain an opportunity in Colombo.

Cristian Perez will likely call himself "UFC fighter" come Wednesday.
At Dana White's Contender Series 88 on Tuesday, Perez (15-2) finished a game opponent in Logan Paxton (10-2) with punches at 1:06 of Round 2. The lightweight bout took place at Meta APEX in Las Vegas.
The first round was competitive, with Paxton showcasing some aggression and power. Perez remained level-headed, focused on the ***** ignment. In Round 2, Perez put Paxton down with a big left hook and finished the fight with a pair of hammerfists.
Perez, 27, redeems himself after a failed DWCS attempt vs. Manoel Sousa in 2025. The fight was a back-and-forth banger, but Perez was finished midway through Round 3. The loss was the only one in his most recent eight appearances.
Paxton, 31, has an eight-fight winning streak snapped.

On August 18, 2008, a 19-year-old Virat Kohli walked out at Dambulla and scored 12 on his India debut. Eighteen years later, the boy who was once a surprise selection has become one of the defining figures of modern cricket: a batter, captain, standard-setter, survivor and, perhaps most importantly, a player who changed what Indian cricket expected from itself.

Virat Kohli is not just an athlete; he has become a brand of cricket, inspiring a generation through his mindset, skills and, most importantly, his hunger for the game. That hunger made him more intense, more furious and, at his best, almost unbeatable. Across his career, Kohli has achieved almost everything: the U19 World Cup, ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy and Asia Cup.

There was nothing particularly prophetic about Virat Kohli's first international innings.

On that day at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Sri Lanka, the teenager walked out to open India's innings. He faced 22 **** , made 12 and was trapped lbw by Nuwan Kulasekara.

India lost by eight wickets. There was no century. No match-winning chase. No hint, at least in the scorecard, that something extraordinary had begun.
Eighteen years later, the numbers have become difficult to ignore.

As of August 2026, Kohli has played 314 ODIs and scored 14,941 runs at 58.59, with 54 hundreds and 79 fifties. He has 9,230 Test runs from 123 matches, including 30 centuries, and finished his T20I career with 4,188 runs from 125 matches. Across international cricket, that is 28,359 runs and 85 centuries.
Long before Dambulla, there was a December morning in 2006 that revealed something about Kohli that statistics never could. He was 18, playing for Delhi against Karnataka in a Ranji Trophy match at the Feroz Shah Kotla. He was unbeaten on 40 overnight when his father, Prem Kohli, died suddenly. Kohli returned to the ground the next morning. He scored 90. It was not just an innings. It was an early declaration of character.

Two years later, he was leading India at the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. India won the tournament. Kohli scored 235 runs in six innings at an average of 47.

He had a modest start to his international career during the Sri Lanka tour. In the fourth ODI of that 2008 series, Kohli made 54, his first international half-century. A year later came his first hundred: 107 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata.
By 2011, Kohli was no longer a prospect. He was part of India's World Cup-winning side. He scored a century against Bangladesh in India's opening game and later walked into the **** hede dressing room during the final when India were 31 for 2.

He made 35. Not the sort of number that usually survives in a career built on hundreds. His 35 helped India recover alongside Gautam Gambhir, before MS Dhoni's 91 finished the job against Sri Lanka.

India won the World Cup. Kohli was just 22.

MACKAY, Australia (AP) — Australia's has dropped Jake Weatherald and recalled Matt Renshaw in a bid to stabilize the top order and try to level the two-match series after a shocking loss to Bangladesh in the first cricket test on the weekend.
Australia announced a 13-man squad on Tuesday, with only the one change for the second test in Mackay, in northern Queensland state, starting Saturday.
Weatherald was out for 23 in the first innings and didn't score in the second innings of Australia's nine-wicket defeat in Darwin, and averaged 20.36 in his 12 test innings. Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 1 and 31, was retained in the squad despite concern over his form.
The 30-year-old Renshaw is a contender to open the innings for Australia with Travis Head in his latest comeback to the test lineup.
Renshaw made his debut in 2016 and played 11 tests before being dropped in 2018. He was recalled in 2023 for three tests but has only played in the shorter formats for Australia since then. He averages 29.31 with one century in 14 tests, but has only played one of his last 10 tests on Australian soil.

Chicago Bears running back Kyle Monangai appears to have avoided a serious knee injury but his status for Week 1 may be in jeopardy. According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Monangai suffered a hyperextended knee after getting tangled up with defensive tackle Grady Jarrett during Sunday's practice that will cause him to miss multiple weeks.
It's been a tough camp for the Bears when it comes to managing injuries. Key players such as safety Coby Bryant and wide receiver Luther Burden are out for multiple weeks at a minimum, while other players like tackle Braxton Jones and defensive end Montez Sweat have been banged up throughout camp. Monangai is the latest player to go down and, at a minimum, will miss the rest of training camp.
The hope is the Bears' second-year back will be good to go for the team's regular season opener against the Carolina Panthers, taking place in less than four weeks. Monangai is a critical aspect of the ground game, along with D'Andre Swift, and is being counted on to pick up where he left off last year. As a rookie, Monangai rushed for 783 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season.
With Monangai sidelined, running backs Roschon Johnson, Salvon Ahmed, Brittain Brown, and Coleman Bennett will see extended carries with a chance to earn a roster spot as training camp continues.

Pop star Taylor Swift was out and about over the weekend, making one of her few public appearances since getting married over 4th of July weekend. Her new husband, NFL tight end Travis Kelce, was seen sporting his wedding band on his way into the first preseason game for his Kansas City Chiefs team.
Swift, meanwhile, was seen in the United Kingdom for the wedding of Oli Jacobs and Laura Sisk. Jacobs and Sisk are recording engineers, having worked on albums with the 14-time Grammy winner before. Sisk collaborated with Swift on 1989, Reputation, Lover, Evermore, Midnights, The Tortured Poets Department and Folklore, along with Swift's re-recorded Taylor's Version albums. Jacobs worked on 1989 (Taylor's Version) and The Tortured Poets Department.
Swift was seen with a new look, having lopped off a good portion of her signature long blond locks. Although her hair was shorter, it certainly isn't drastically short. Her bangs were also swept to the side, completing the look.

The USC Trojans started fall camp being dealt a bad hand. Starting center Kilian O'Connor went down with an injury, but it's safe to say the play they will get at tackle will be more than serviceable, with a new 5-star recruit starting training camp with a bang. Keenyi Pepe has been off to a great start, and it will be hard to keep a guy with his traits off the field.
In a recent article, Billy Tucker highlights a freshman who can make a key impact for USC this season in the trenches. Here is what he had to say about Keenyi Pepe:
"Pepe is USC's best offensive tackle recruit since ESPN introduced the rankings in 2006 and the highest-graded offensive tackle to reach campus since Chuma Edoga in 2015. Pepe has excellent size at 6-7, 330 pounds, light feet and savvy technique for being 19 years old. Those are the building blocks for a long-term cornerstone left tackle. USC threw him into the fire in spring ball, getting Pepe reps at both tackle positions, and he could push for early playing time as a swing tackle."
Pepe will be a difference maker for USC with the versatility he has. His size and big frame are one thing that definitely stands out, but how quickly he can move will make a big impact when he gets his chance to start. The Trojans' offense will be even more explosive with someone like him on the offensive line getting out in **** e, wreaking havoc. The 5-star tackle will not wait to make an impact for the Trojans, and with some injuries already taking place in camp, Pepe has a real shot to be a day 1 contributor.

Pat ******* mins' captaincy record took an unwanted turn after Australia suffered a nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the first Test at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Sunday.

The match ended inside four days, with Australia conceding a 228-run first-innings lead before setting Bangladesh only 57 runs to win in the fourth innings. The visitors reached the target in 14.2 overs, losing just one wicket.

The defeat was Australia's first-ever home Test loss against Bangladesh and also added ******* mins to an unwanted list.

Cummins, who has been Australia's Test captain since the 2021-22 Ashes, became only the second Australian captain after Greg Chappell to lose home Tests against two different Asian teams.

Chappell lost two home Tests against Pakistan — in Sydney in January 1977 and Melbourne in December 1981 — and another against India in Melbourne in February 1981.

Cummins has now lost one home Test against India, in Perth in November 2024, and one against Bangladesh in Darwin in August 2026.

Bangladesh needed only three Tests to record their first Test win in Australia. They are now the fastest Asian team and the second-fastest team overall to win a Test on Australian soil.

Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud played a key role in the victory, taking nine wickets across the match to claim the Player of the Match award. He picked up six wickets in Australia's first innings and three in the second.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz also contributed with both bat and ball. He scored a half-century in the first innings before taking five wickets in the second.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 84 in the first innings, while opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim made 101 off 197 ******* .

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood took six wickets in the first innings, while Cameron Green scored 104 in the second innings. However, the rest of the Australian side could not make enough of an impact as Bangladesh completed their first Test victory in Australia.

Taylor Swift flew across the Atlantic to attend Laura Sisk and Oli Jacobs' wedding in the United Kingdom on Saturday. The wedding of the audio engineers took place at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios outside Bath in Gloucestershire.
On Sunday, People Magazine published photos from the wedding, showing Swift sporting a shoulder-length hairstyle and her signature bangs. She wore a navy blue dress with gold floral embroidery. In accessories, she opted for a pearl necklace and her signature bold red lip.
Swift's friends, Jack Antonoff and singer Sabrina Carpenter, also attended.
Taylor Swift has worn shoulder-length hair during several important periods of her career.
During the "1989" era in 2014 and 2015, she cut her long hair into a shoulder-length bob or lob. She kept the wavy, side-swept style through most of the 1989 World Tour before switching to a shorter, chin-length blunt bob in early 2016.

A home series against Bangladesh was expected to give Australia a chance to shake off the rust and begin a busy year of Test cricket. Instead, the nine-wicket defeat in Darwin has left the top-ranked side facing questions about its batting and the future of the team.

Australia were beaten inside four days on Sunday after Bangladesh dominated the first Test. The result was described by Australian media as one of the country's biggest Test defeats, with ninth-ranked Bangladesh outplaying the hosts.

The second and final Test in Mackay, Queensland, begins on Saturday and now carries greater importance than expected. Australia need a convincing win to level the series and ease concerns that the Darwin defeat was more than just a one-off result.

"Let's call this out for the gob-smacking shambles that it was ... Australia's nine wicket loss to Bangladesh is both the greatest upset in Test history and the most humbling Test loss ever suffered by an Australian cricket team," veteran cricket writer Robert Craddock opined in the Courier Mail newspaper, as quoted by Reuters.

"None of Australia's 236 Test losses over 150 years quite compare to it."

Captain Pat ****** mins did not try to hide Australia's poor performance after the match. He said the game was lost on the opening day, when Australia were dismissed for 198, but the problems extended beyond that innings.

Australia struggled throughout the match, losing ground across all four days and in every session.

The main focus has been on the team's batting. The concerns are not new and had already emerged during the home summer, when Australia won the Ashes 4-1 against England.

Opener Jake Weatherald has yet to show that he can consistently perform at Test level and may get one more opportunity in Mackay.

Marnus Labuschagne is also under pressure after two poor dismissals in Darwin. Once a key player in Australia's top order, his continued struggle is putting more pressure on the batters below him.

The defeat has also renewed calls for Australia to bring in younger players. Head coach Andrew McDonald and his coaching staff may have to consider changes despite the lack of young batters putting up enough runs in domestic cricket to demand selection.

Bangladesh pulled off a nine-wicket win over Australia in Darwin on Sunday, giving them one of the biggest wins in Test cricket and leaving Australia's 20-Test schedule over the next 12 months off to a difficult start.

Cameron Green's maiden Test century at home delayed the result, but Bangladesh had already taken control of the match after three-and-a-half days of cricket on a Marrara Stadium pitch that offered a good contest between bat and ball.

The result was unexpected given the records of the two teams. Australia had reached the last two World Test Championship (WTC) finals and won 18 of their previous 23 Tests. Bangladesh, meanwhile, had lost 22 of their previous 26 Tests outside Asia and had suffered innings defeats against Zimbabwe and a Cricket Australia XI in the previous two months.

Yet Najmul Hossain Shanto's side produced a nine-wicket win in their first Test in Australia since 2003. It was Bangladesh's first long-format tour of Australia in 23 years and one of the biggest results in the country's 40-year history in international cricket.

The result has also changed the WTC picture.

Before the Darwin Test, Bangladesh were fourth in the WTC standings, one place above India. However, they had played only four Tests at that stage — losing 0-1 to Sri Lanka and beating Pakistan 2-0 at home — so their position was largely viewed in the context of the small number of matches they had played.

Their win in Darwin has now pushed Bangladesh to 66.67 per cent, while India remain on 48.15 per cent.

India had entered the Sri Lanka series after drawing 2-2 in England and beating the West Indies 2-0 at home. Their progress was then checked by a 0-2 home series defeat to South Africa.

The two Tests in Sri Lanka were expected to be an important part of India's push for a place in next year's WTC final. But rain disrupted the second day of the opening Test in Galle after India had made a strong start, while more rain is forecast over the next three days.

Bangladesh's win in Darwin has widened the gap between them and India to more than 18 percentage points.

For India, the remaining WTC schedule leaves little room for dropped points. After Sri Lanka, they travel to New Zealand for two Tests before hosting Australia in a five-Test series.

New Zealand have proved difficult opponents for India in their own conditions, while India may need something close to a 4-0 series win against Australia to remain in contention for the WTC final.

The current WTC standings are:
Australia — 77.77%
South Africa — 75%
New Zealand — 72.22%
Bangladesh — 66.67%

Good morning!
It's hard to believe four years had passed since I last saw Yard Act perform at the Black Cat. The post-punk Leeds outfit came out of the Covid-era with a banger of a debut album. It was clear that they had something to say.
The odd thing is that, in their third record, You're Gonna Need a Little Music, James Smith has a little bit of a different message: "I've done absolutely nothing since I last saw you four years ago / Ah, how you doing, yeah, I'm still chipping away / But I've got absolutely nothing / Absolutely nothing new to say"
This is the sort of imposter syndrome Yard Act tackle in their most recent project. The quartet are exploring new styles and adopting different references from disco house to Blur and Muse to create a far more varied sound.
That all creates for a deeper, richer backlog of tracks to dig into when they hit the stage. And, four years on from first seeing them, they returned to Black Cat with as much ferocity as ever.

The Joan Gamper Trophy is traditionally Barcelona's curtain-raiser to the new season, and the Catalans played their final pre-season friendly ahead of that clash last night against FC Basel.
The first-half of the game was rather tight and ended with both sides level with a 1-1 scoreline. Barcelona created the better chances, but Karim Adeyemi's opener was crossed out by a Jean Doucoure banger.
After the break, however, Barcelona ran away with the game as Hamza Abdelkarim put them ahead with a lethal finish and Lamine Yamal made it 3-1 from the penalty spot.
Basel themselves earned a penalty soon after to make it 3-2, but young sensation Jesse Bisiwu scored twice in two minutes to put the icing on the cake and end the game with a 5-2 win.
Barça Universal brings you three takeaways from Basel 2-5 Barcelona.

Australia's humiliating nine-wicket loss to Bangladesh has accelerated calls for regeneration of its ageing Test team with opener Jake Weatherald and the inconsistent Marnus Labuschagne in the firing line.
The clash in Darwin had been touted as a mismatch after Bangladesh crumbled to an innings defeat in their only warm-up game and went into the first Test without injured pace spearhead Nahid Rana.
But in one of the biggest upsets cricket has seen, the visitors pulled off a historic victory Sunday to leave top-ranked Australia shell-shocked and facing recriminations.
Australia have suffered surprise home defeats in the recent past, including an eight-run loss to the West Indies at the Gabba in 2024.
But the manner of this crushing loss, with Bangladesh dominating each of the four days, had Australian media Monday slamming it as "a disaster" and the "most embarrassing" ever.

Taylor Swift was spotted enjoying herself in London as her husband, Travis Kelce, returned to Chiefs' training post-wedding. The Grammy winner had a fun girls' night out in the English capital late Wednesday. Notably, this is her first solo outing since tying the knot with Kelce on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The wedding was reportedly attended by 1,000 guests.
Taylor Swift enjoyed a wholesome girls' night out in London, her first solo outing since marrying Travis Kelce. The "Opalite" crooner was photographed exiting Annabel's, which is a private members-only club. She had modelled a purple floral mini dress with her signature wispy bangs and red lipstick. The singer wore heels and subtly flaunted her wedding ring (via Page Six).
Interestingly, this is the first time Swift has stepped out by herself post-wedding. Not only that, but this is also her first outing since Kelce gushed over the couple's nuptials during a recent press interaction.
Kelce revealed to the reporters: "It was a fun offseason, man. Wedding was the best night of my life, and I appreciate everybody who came out and celebrated and had fun with us."
Furthermore, the Chiefs tight end added: "It was a crazy night. It was full of a lot of celebration." The "Lover" crooner has not publicly commented on her wedding to Kelce, nor has she shared any photos from the ceremony.

Taylor Swift has been married to NFL star Travis Kelce for more than a month. The power couple tied the knot in a ceremony at Madison Square Garden on Friday, July 3. More than 1,000 guests were in attendance.
While Kelce, 36, is currently getting ready for the 2026 NFL season with the Kansas City Chiefs, his wife, Swift, has been traveling abroad. Swift, 36, was spotted in London earlier this week. She's since been spotted at a United Kingdom wedding.
Swift stunned with a new, short haircut, a month into being Mrs. Kelce.
"Joined by pals Sabrina Carpenter and Jack Antonoff to celebrate the nuptials of recording engineers Oli Jacobs and Laura Sisk, Swift's shorter hairdo was on full display, with her signature bangs still intact, as she wore a navy blue dress embroidered with golden floral designs. She paired the attire with her classic red lip, as well as her massive engagement ring and wedding band following her own wedding to Travis Kelce earlier this summer," PEOPLE reported.
Photos of the haircut can be seen here.

It took until the 12th day of training camp, but we finally got some fights in practice in Green Bay. The first scuffle was between running back Chris Brooks and linebacker Zaire Franklin, but the second one was more involved. Defensive lineman Chris McClellan landed hard on running back Pierre Strong Jr., which led to McClellan and offensive tackle Travis Glover punching and shoving, and the sidelines clearing.
On top of that, edge rusher Barryn Sorrell, who has been starting opposite Lukas Van Ness all camp, pushed tackle Anthony Belton all the way into quarterback Jordan Love. Sorrell was ripped from the drill and was "tore into" by head coach Matt LaFleur, according to The Athletic's Matt Schneidman.
At some point during camp, players get tired of banging around with the same guys over and over again. Apparently, the Packers crossed that threshold today.
Beyond the chippiness, here's what happened at practice on Sunday.
The PUP list remains the same, with tight end Luke Musgrave (neck), defensive lineman Jordon Riley (ankle), edge rusher Micah Parsons (knee) and Matt Orzech (calf) still not being activated. The non-participants in practice, beyond the PUP list, were running back Josh Jacobs (groin), offensive lineman Darian Kinnard (ankle), edge defender Lukas Van Ness (shoulder), edge defender Dani Dennis-Sutton (illness) and safety Javon Bullard (foot). Notably, though, Bullard was no longer in a boot in practice, as he's making progress on his bone bruise.

Cameron Green's fighting century may have come in a losing cause, but it gave Australia something positive to take away from their heavy Test defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin on Sunday.

The all-rounder scored 104 from 201 **** as Australia recovered from a difficult position to take a 56-run lead.

However, Bangladesh needed just 57 runs in the final innings and chased it down comfortably to complete the win.
Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist said Green's innings could provide a model for him to follow in the future, especially given the expectations surrounding the 26-year-old.

"He is a big man who shoulders a lot of responsibility. He has had a lot of expectations on him," Gilchrist said as quoted by Fox Cricket.

"There is a blueprint there for Cameron Green to follow and look to execute now. It is one of the positive stories out of what has been a really tough match for the Australians," he added.

Former Australia cricketer Kerry O'Keeffe also backed Green to become a key part of the batting order, praising how he built his innings.

"Cameron Green has been brilliant. He had the rhythm of a number five (and) the way he's constructed this innings is a good thing going forward," he said.

"If he gets his mental side right, he has the capacity to bat five and score big, but then, when Steve Smith moves on, to bat at four and be a real player for Australia. The inner sanctum have always believed he fits and you can sense a long career ahead of him now," he added.
Australia were bowled out for 198 in the first innings, despite Steve Smith's 71. Bangladesh responded with 426, led by Tanzid Hasan's 101, while Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 84 and 65 respectively.

Australia then slipped to 73/3 before Green, Smith and Alex Carey helped them recover and take a 56-run lead. Bangladesh's Miraz and Mahmud took five and three wickets respectively before Bangladesh chased down the target without trouble.

Bangladesh produced a historic performance in Darwin, defeating Australia by nine wickets in the first Test to secure their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil. The defeat brought Australia's long run of consistency under scrutiny, but Steve Smith was quick to acknowledge Bangladesh's superior performance while insisting that one poor Test does not change Australia's status as the world's top-ranked Test side.

"Pretty simple: we were outplayed. I thought Bangladesh bowled really well the first morning, really disciplined. Our batters probably weren't disciplined enough," Smith said after the defeat, as quoted by The Daily Star.
Australia struggled with the bat across both innings. After being bowled out for 198 in their first innings, they were forced to concede a massive 228-run lead after Bangladesh piled up 426. Smith, who scored 71 in the first innings, admitted that Australia failed to capitalise when their batters got starts.

"They got too many in front, and we weren't able to catch it up yesterday on what was a pretty decent wicket to bat on. A couple of us got starts and didn't go on with it. Greeny, I thought, played really nicely to get a hundred, but he didn't have any partners to go with him," he said.

Cameron Green provided Australia with some resistance in the second innings, scoring a fighting 104, but the hosts were eventually dismissed for 284. Bangladesh were left with only 57 runs to chase for victory.
Despite the heavy defeat, Smith backed Australia to bounce back and urged the team not to overreact to what he described as a poor week.

"I hope it's one bad week. We're the number one team for a reason. We've played really good, consistent cricket over a long period of time, and this week was a bit of a blip," Smith said.

The experienced batter also gave full credit to Bangladesh for their performance throughout the four-day contest.

"We could have done things a lot better, but credit goes to them for the way they played throughout these last four days," he added.
Australia were bowled out for 198 after Hasan Mahmud's stunning 6/55, before Bangladesh piled on 426, led by centuries from Tanzid Hasan and strong knocks from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Josh Hazlewood took six wickets and reached 300 Test wickets.

Cameron Green's 104 helped Australia fight back in the second innings, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz's 5/66 and Hasan Mahmud's three wickets restricted them to 284.

Bangladesh produced one of the biggest results of their Test history by defeating Australia by nine wickets in Darwin, and the stunning victory has brought significant changes to the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 standings. Despite suffering their second defeat of the cycle, Australia have retained the top spot in the WTC table. However, their points percentage (PCT) has fallen from 87.50% to 77.78%, bringing them much closer to the chasing pack.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, have strengthened their position in fourth place. Their PCT has risen from 58.33% to 66.67% following the historic triumph, putting them firmly in contention in the race for the WTC Final.
Australia currently have 84 points from nine Tests, with seven wins and two defeats. Their 77.78% PCT keeps them ahead of South Africa, who are second with 75% after four Tests. New Zealand occupy third place with 72.22% from six matches, while Bangladesh are fourth with 40 points from five Tests. The Tigers have won three matches, lost one and drawn one in the ongoing cycle.

Bangladesh's victory in Darwin was particularly significant as it marked their first-ever Test win on Australian soil.

The result was set up by an impressive all-round performance from the visitors. Tanzid Hasan's century gave Bangladesh a strong platform with the bat, while Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz played crucial roles with the ball to dismantle the Australian batting line-up. Bangladesh then chased down a modest target of 57 with nine wickets in hand.
India are currently fifth in the WTC standings with 52 points from nine Tests. Their record stands at four wins, four defeats and one draw, giving them a PCT of 48.15%. India's position remains precarious, with Sri Lanka close behind in sixth place on 41.67%. Sri Lanka have played four Tests, winning one, losing one and drawing two.

Australia captain Pat ***** mins admitted his side were outplayed in all departments after Bangladesh completed a historic nine-wicket victory in the first Test at Darwin's Marrara Oval on Sunday.

The defeat gave Bangladesh their first Test win on Australian soil and only their second victory over Australia, following their maiden triumph in Dhaka in 2017.

Cummins pointed to Australia's first-innings performance as the key turning point, conceding that his side needed to find a way to bat for longer after Bangladesh's bowlers made early inroads.

"Probably that day one. You know, I thought our preparation was pretty much spot on. I thought it was excellent. So, no excuses. They played really well. I thought the day one wicket was doing a little bit early, but obviously got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then, just couldn't penetrate with the ball," ***** mins said after the match.

Australia were dismissed for 198 in their first innings after ***** mins won the toss and elected to bat. Bangladesh responded with 426, taking a commanding 228-run lead that ultimately proved decisive.

The hosts showed more resistance in their second innings, reaching 284, with Cameron Green scoring a century. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz's five-wicket haul helped Bangladesh restrict Australia's lead to just 56 runs before the visitors chased down the target in 14.2 overs.

Cummins acknowledged that Bangladesh maintained control once they had established their advantage.

"Yeah, they did. I think they outplayed us in all facets, really. I thought they were really patient and quite disciplined. And, yeah, once we were behind, it was really hard to get back," he said.

The Australian captain also admitted that the team's batting performances could come under scrutiny before the second Test in Mackay, Queensland, beginning on August 22.

"I think every time there's a game like this, you always kind of look at your match-ups and your make-up of the team for the next one. But, we only just finished, so we'll have a think about it. We're pretty good at bouncing back, so no doubt the batters and every group will get together and have a good think about this one and where we can improve," ***** mins said.

While Australia's batting came under pressure, ***** mins praised Josh Hazlewood for reaching the milestone of 300 Test wickets. Hazlewood finished with six wickets across Bangladesh's two innings.

"Josh, he hasn't had a great run for injuries the last couple of years, but he's one of the hardest workers and just showed his class. And, you know, didn't have too much in it, seam-wise, still picking up six really important wickets. So he was fantastic," ***** mins said.

He also singled out Green, whose 104 was his third Test century and first in Australia. The allrounder spent 201 ***** at the crease and combined with Australia's lower order to prevent Bangladesh from winning by an innings.

"And then Greeny,

DARWIN, Australia (AP) — Mehidy Hasan Miraz spun Bangladesh to the verge of a famous victory as he claimed three wickets to have Australia at 243-7 at lunch on Day 4 of the first cricket test.
Resuming Sunday at 161-4, Australia added 82 runs for the session to avoid the ignominy of a home innings defeat to take a 15-run lead at the interval.
Only Cameron Green provided concerted resistance to the Bangladesh attack as he notched his eighth test half century, and highest score in Australia, on his way to 85 not out.
Mitchell Starc was 14 not out at the break, sharing a 36-run partnership with Green in what is likely Australia's last hope of turning the tide of the match.
But the result appears only delayed after another session where Bangladesh again comprehensively outplayed its more-fancied hosts.
