Though it's not foolproof investing wisdom, and it is stock-specific, there is something to the "boring is beautiful" thesis. It's one reason that so many income investors and risk-averse market participants embrace consumer staples stocks.
The other side of the boring coin is that mundane doesn't captivate hearts, minds, and investor capital when growth stocks are in vogue, and that's very much the case these days. Many market participants are chasing tech stocks and pondering what's next in the world of artificial intelligence (AI).
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Those trends don't necessarily mean that Wall Street is in the midst of another round of Dutch tulip mania, nor that a bubble will imminently burst, but investors' adulation for what they perceive as glitzy names helps explain how some defensive stocks can slip through the cracks, even when those companies are delivering solid showings. Such is life for Sysco (NYSE: SYY), the king of food distributors.

The 2026 college football season hasn't even kicked off yet, and that means it'll be quite a while until we see the College Football Playoff committee do a song and dance in the media when the CFP rankings are unveiled. As a reminder, the committee doesn't even rank teams until well into the season, so we'll let Ohio State and all the other teams in college do some of their best work before the throng descends on Grapevine, Texas, to try and sort things out.
However, what we do know, thanks to a release from the committee, are the dates and times on which we will see the rankings unveiled each week. From the first set of rankings all the way through the last rankings after the conference championship games that determine the CFP participants.
Here's how things line up for the CFP rankings reveals that will undoubtedly come to us on a screen thanks to ESPN.

For the first time in eight years, the UConn women's basketball team had an undefeated regular season last year.
Matching that in 2026-27 could be a challenge for the Huskies, who announced their difficult nonconference schedule on Monday.
UConn will not only play South Carolina in a rematch of the 2026 Final Four, but will also face longtime rivals in Notre Dame and Tennessee and take on heavy hitters Michigan and LSU.
After playing in three preseason exhibitions throughout the month of October, the Huskies will open the 2026-27 season on Nov. 2 by hosting Cornell. Tip times, TV and home venue designations have yet to be announced.
Ten of UConn's 12 nonconference opponents played in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, including four of the Elite Eight participants (South Carolina, Duke, Notre Dame and Michigan). The Huskies will face Texas (which also reached the Elite Eight) in an exhibition on Oct. 19.

Our next Get German Football News Bundesliga 2026/27 Tactical preview takes us…to Sinsheim. Right. All 18 clubs means all 18 clubs. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim belongs to the Bundesliga field whether we Germans happen to like it or not. The author can only promise the most level-headed ***** ysis his gritted teeth will allow. One would think he got most of his grievances off his chest last year. Regrettably, the political situation at the Kraichgau club over the course of the 2025/26 campaign only produced more grievances.
This time, the Hoffenheim fans themselves demanded more of a voice in club affairs. That definitely merited extensive coverage. In point of fact, such protest actions constituted the very definition of what can and should be newsworthy on the Bundesliga beat. Some disagreed. The chronicler makes no apologies. Dietmar Hopp promised to turn this project over to the burgeoning fan-base that's been supporting it for the past two decades. Potentially reneging on that promise counts as a story. Period.
When it comes to the actual football produced by these Badeners, all coverage remains even-handed. TSG sporting director Andreas Schicker did a fabulous job reducing the roster last summer. The team supplied many memorable performances. Ahead of this season – were it not for the collapsed Fisnik Asllani transfer – Schicker would have produced nearly €100m in summer sales. The author concedes that such skillful administrating deserves praise as it would have theoretically negated the need for another Dietmar Hopp cash infusion.
Alas, we'll likely be reading about more direct benefactor financing next year.
From a straight footballing perspective, things are once again looking up for the 2026/27 Europa League participants. Schicker again put together a stellar offseason, cutting up transfer bait, and recruiting plenty of young promising talent. Dammit. The author literally can't get through the next section quickly enough. There's far too much to report. At least the sheer scale of the activity gives us an excuse to dispense with the rhetoric. Suffice to say that the squad planning and administrative enforcement was simply top-notch. Merely consider yourselves forewarned that this grouchy writer can only contain his disdain to a limited extent.

It took until the 12th day of training camp, but we finally got some fights in practice in Green Bay. The first scuffle was between running back Chris Brooks and linebacker Zaire Franklin, but the second one was more involved. Defensive lineman Chris McClellan landed hard on running back Pierre Strong Jr., which led to McClellan and offensive tackle Travis Glover punching and shoving, and the sidelines clearing.
On top of that, edge rusher Barryn Sorrell, who has been starting opposite Lukas Van Ness all camp, pushed tackle Anthony Belton all the way into quarterback Jordan Love. Sorrell was ripped from the drill and was "tore into" by head coach Matt LaFleur, according to The Athletic's Matt Schneidman.
At some point during camp, players get tired of banging around with the same guys over and over again. Apparently, the Packers crossed that threshold today.
Beyond the chippiness, here's what happened at practice on Sunday.
The PUP list remains the same, with tight end Luke Musgrave (neck), defensive lineman Jordon Riley (ankle), edge rusher Micah Parsons (knee) and Matt Orzech (calf) still not being activated. The non-participants in practice, beyond the PUP list, were running back Josh Jacobs (groin), offensive lineman Darian Kinnard (ankle), edge defender Lukas Van Ness (shoulder), edge defender Dani Dennis-Sutton (illness) and safety Javon Bullard (foot). Notably, though, Bullard was no longer in a boot in practice, as he's making progress on his bone bruise.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is among the three newest advisors to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, officials announced Aug. 14.
As a member of HISA's Horsemen's Advisory Group, Baffert is expected provide feedback on the Racetrack Safety, and Anti-Doping and Medication Control programs, which cover rules and regulations in horse racing. The others named to the 18-member advisory group Aug. 14 are trainers Jena Antonucci and Tim Keefe.
"We are also pleased to welcome our new members to the Advisory Group and look forward to the perspectives they will bring as we continue working collaboratively with stakeholders to enhance the sport for horses and participants alike," HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus said in a statement.
Baffert, Antonucci and Keefe succeed outgoing advisory group members Kelsey Danner, Gavin Murphy and Jonathan Sadler.
Baffert, 73, has trained six Kentucky Derby and two Triple Crown winners in a more than 40-year career. In 2021, Baffert received a two-year suspension from Churchill Downs after Medina Spirit, who had finished first in that year's Kentucky Derby, was found to have failed a postrace drug test. The suspension was later extended one year amid a lawsuit from Baffert, who had claimed Churchill was targeting him and trying to destroy his career.

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) cleared a notable regulatory hurdle on August 10, when Britain's drug regulator authorized the company's oral GLP-1 drug orforglipron, becoming the first country in Europe to approve the pill. Shares of LLY increased more than 2% in response to the announcement, a modest but insightful reaction for a company whose weight-loss franchise has become the single most important driver of its market value.
The UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency approved orforglipron, offered under the brand name Foundayo, for weight loss and maintenance in obese adults, as well as select overweight individuals with at least one weight-related health condition. The approval also addresses increasing blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes.
What sets Foundayo apart from Lilly's other weight-loss medications, as well as the majority of the GLP-1 category in general, is the format. Unlike injectable drugs like Lilly's Zepbound or Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO)'s Ozempic, Foundayo is a small, non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist that is taken as a single daily tablet. It can also be taken at any time with no food or water restrictions, making it a far more convenient regimen than some oral peptide alternatives that require fasting windows around dosing.
The clinical data that supports the approval is strong. In the ATTAIN-1 trial, which tracked 3,127 individuals with obesity for 72 weeks, participants on the 36 mg dose lost an average of 11.2% of their body weight, as opposed to 2.1% on placebo, and more than half of those on that dose lost at least 10%.
The authorization is crucial, but it is not the final step. Foundayo is not currently available through the NHS in the UK, and the drug's journey to that larger market is through the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which is completing its own cost-effectiveness study, with a decision expected on November 18. Until NICE decides, UK patients seeking the medicine will have to pay out of pocket or get it privately, a scenario that is already playing out with competing products in the category.

Kickoff is right around the corner.
As we get deeper into August, high school football is about to be everywhere (if it isn't already) – and we've got numbers on just how big it is in your state.
Participation numbers from the National Federation of State High School **** ociations, reported in 2008, 2018, 2021 and 2024, paint a picture of the sport's obvious prevalence across the country. As of 2024, the total number of high school football players in America was 1,029,558, across 14,269 schools and all 50 states. In the many states – 32, to be exact – their numbers are only continuing to rise.
The state with the most players should come as no surprise – after all, everything's bigger in Texas. With 174,126 football players at the 2024 count, the Lone Star State has nearly double the players of runner-up California with their 91,411 participants. It's a gaping drop off after those two **** ans to the number three state, which is Ohio with 39,439.
It follows then, that Texas and California have also seen the largest growths, tacking on 32,828 and 11,806 players, respectively, since 2008. A dark horse takes the third spot, with Mississippi slotting in after those two with a growth of 11,416 since 2008. Not too shabby for a state with just over 28,000 participants total.

Proposed guidance from the Treasury Department and the IRS is aiming to simplify the rollover process between retirement plans and individual retirement accounts. Instead of participants carrying much of the administrative burden, the new rules would have recordkeepers shoulder more of the work and facilitate electronic **** et transfers. Direct rollovers are already possible, but the proposal would create standardized forms and procedures for financial institutions to coordinate transfers. If approved, the change could save clients potentially dozens of hours of time when rolling over retirement accounts.

VTBIX quietly anchors most Vanguard 401(k) bond allocations, bundling thousands of investment-grade U.S. bonds into one near-zero-cost institutional fund.
BND, VTBIX's tradeable ETF twin, lost 1.4% on price over five years but has gained over 14% over ten.
VTBIX holds no junk bonds, no TIPS, and no emerging-market debt, making it a poor fit for yield-seekers or inflation hedgers.
Act now: the ****** yst who called NVIDIA in 2010 just named his top 10 AI stocks — and VTBIX didn't make the cut. Grab the names FREE today.
Only about 3% of Vanguard 401(k) contribution dollars in 2024 went into dedicated bond funds, and a big chunk of that money sits in one place most participants never open a fact sheet for: the institutional bond index fund quietly stapled to the back of their plan menu.

AGTHX owns $6 billion in private AI stakes like Anthropic and OpenAI, unavailable to index funds, and returned 87% over three years vs. SPY's 72%.

The Growth Fund of America manages $360.9 billion in net ****** ets as of May 31, 2026, which is roughly the GDP of a mid-sized country parked inside a single actively managed mutual fund. That is a strange headline in an era when index funds were supposed to have won the argument. Run by Capital Group under the American Funds brand, AGTHX is a large-cap growth fund with 332 positions spread across US mega-caps, international semiconductors, private tech, and a slug of cash. From the FIA easing restrictions to allow Russian and Belarusian drivers and teams to compete under their national flags again to Lightning McQueen being set for an official Formula 1 appearance, here are the biggest stories from August 14.
The FIA has lifted the restrictions previously imposed on Russian and Belarusian participants in international motorsport, following a decision approved by the World Motor Sport Council. Drivers, teams, individual competitors and officials from both countries can now take part without having to compete under neutral status or sign a neutrality commitment.
The change also means Russian and Belarusian national symbols can once again be displayed at international and zone competitions. National flags, colours and symbols are permitted on cars, equipment and uniforms, while the respective national anthems can also be played. However, the FIA continues to prohibit international and zone events from being held in Russia or Belarus until further notice.
Participation will still depend on the laws and regulations applicable in the country hosting each event. The governing body will also continue to follow developments in Ukraine and retains the ability to introduce further measures if circumstances change, including action required to comply with sanctions regimes or its contractual obligations.

Several races will take place Oct. 16-18 for the Detroit Free Press Marathon's 49th year. Organizers say they have an increased need for volunteers on Sunday, Oct. 18, when the marathon and half-marathons – the weekend's largest races – take place. Those races are sold out.
"Volunteers are essential to the success of the Detroit Free Press Marathon," according to the event's website. "They support participants and staff by distributing bibs and goodie bags, guiding runners, providing water, and handing out medals."
No experience is needed to volunteer for the races.

Fall camp is underway for all 138 FBS institutions. And while the start of fall camp is generally viewed as a positive among college football fans, there is one harsh reality that comes with it — injuries.
Notable injuries have been already reported from the camps of both 2025 American Conference Championship Game participants:
RB Jamauri McClure — foot
Tulane running back Jamauri McClure missed practice on Tuesday, Aug. 11 due to an injured left foot, per Guerry Smith of The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate. Smith reported McClure watched practice from a scooter and could return early in the season per head coach Will Hall, although the running back's status for the Sept. 5 opener at Duke may be in jeopardy.
McClure ranked first in rushing yards among the running backs on Tulane's 2025 American Conference champion roster, despite making only three starts. As a redshirt freshman, he posted 540 rushing yards and two touchdowns on a 6.5 average. Nearly all of McClure's production occurred after the calendar flipped to November. He eclipsed the century mark twice, posting 122 on Temple in Week 13 and 121 in the conference ***** le game vs. North Texas. McClure averaged 98 rushing yards per game in his final five performances, capping it off with an 84-yard showing in the College Football Playoff loss to Ole Miss.

The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League is on to the playoff round, the final stage of qualifying before the 36-team league phase begins in September.
The playoff round features seven two-legged ties, with the winners advancing to join 29 other clubs who qualified directly for the league phase. The matches will be played on Aug. 18-19 with the second legs scheduled for Aug. 25-26 across Europe.
While the expanded format has taken some of the star power out of the playoff round in recent years, fans will be familiar with a handful of the participants including Scottish giant Celtic, Turkey's Fenerbahçe and last year's darling Bodø/Glimt from Norway.
Here's what to know for the playoff round and Champions League at large:

Later this month, we will be watching college football. The season kicks off when North Carolina and TCU square off in Ireland, while the first Big Ten in action will be USC when they host San Jose State. With the season only weeks away, we are seeing preseason polls released, award watchlists revealed, and predictions for this year's CFP participants being shared. Ohio State, Oregon, and Indiana are common favorites to make this year's playoff and are earning spots in the 12-team field in each of the last two seasons.
Back in the first year of the 12-team field, Indiana shocked the college football world when Curt Cignetti led the Hoosiers to the College Football Playoff in his first year as head coach at the coach. Is there another surprise in store for the CFP this season? If Indiana can do it, then why can't another Big Ten school that has been a perennial loser or a program that has been stuck in the middle of the conference make the playoff? What if Bob Chesney is Cignetti 2.0? Chesney is now the head coach at UCLA after leading James Madison to the playoff last season.
Today we want you to call your shot and let us know which Big Ten team could be a sleeper to make this year's College Football Playoff. Obviously you didn't understand the ***** ignment if you are picking Ohio State, Oregon, or Indiana. Everybody else is on the table since all the other teams in the conference have at least +250 odds to make the CFP. What will be interesting is to see if anyone wants to go on the record and pick Purdue to make the playoff, as they have the lowest odds of any team in the conference at +25000.
We'd love to hear your choices. Either respond to us on Twitter at Landgrant33 or leave your choice in the comments.
It's obvious why P.J. Fleck and Minnesota are in favor of an expanded College Football Playoff. At 24 teams, the Golden Gophers would have likely made the CFP a few times since 2021, as Fleck and the Golden Gophers have won at least eight games four times in those five seasons, while also winning all five bowl games they have played in. This isn't even taking into account the 2019 season when Minnesota won 11 games and finished the season ranked 10th in the country.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — In the NFL, teams are required to hold a non-padded practice after three consecutive days in pads. For Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs, that opens the door for an Andy Reid special: a 10-10-10 practice.
A 10-10-10 practice is unique to Reid and places an emphasis on lower intensity and mental sharpness. It derives its name from 10 offensive plays, 10 defensive plays and 10 minutes of special teams. The quick pace of practice creates a mental test, especially for new players, as they run in and out of huddles and look to execute ***** ignments correctly.
That being said, every part of a 10-10-10 practice cannot be taken at face value. Plays are scripted to produce a level of success for the group being evaluated. When the offense runs its 10 plays, the defense works at half speed as a scout team to give the offense certain looks. Deep passes are common, with defenders intentionally trailing receivers. On the other side of the ball, when the defense runs its 10 plays, the offense acts as the scout team, with the quarterback throwing into coverage, targeting a defender or holding the ball for an extra second.
Despite the lighter practice, there were still several notable nonparticipants, including Xavier Worthy, Cyrus Allen, L'Jarius Sneed and Drue Tranquill.
The practice gives players an opportunity to recover as they prepare to finish the week and turn their attention toward next week's first preseason game. Although the 10-10-10 format does not offer the same physical evaluation as a padded practice, it gives Reid and his staff another look at how quickly players process information and execute their responsibilities. For younger players fighting for spots on the 53-man roster, those mental reps can be just as important as anything they show in full-speed drills.

Robinhood this week unveiled a financial instrument that lets anyone feel like they, too, can make money by backing Y Combinator startups.
Robinhood Venture Fund II (RVII) is expected to become a publicly traded fund on August 13 at an opening price of $25 per share.
The fund intends to raise as much as $200 million, Reuters reports, and use that money to invest in startups founded by current and former Y Combinator participants, should those startups agree to sell their shares.
While any retail investor can buy shares in the fund, they will not directly hold any shares in the startups. Investors will be able to trade their shares in the fund, but it's unclear how much profit they can expect to make should the YC companies manage big exits.
The fund intends to pay the 2/20 fees typical in the VC world to another entity owned by Robinhood, plus tack on extra fees. That means Robinhood's unit will collect 2% of the net returns as a management fee, plus other fees, taking the total to just over 4%, the company said. The fund will also pay the Robinhood unit 20% "carried interest" (commonly called "carry"). That means if enough Y Combinator companies have good exits for the fund to make money, that Robinhood unit will get 20% of the resulting returns.

Management attributes the 200 basis point sequential physical occupancy increase to deliberate market share gains and the ramping of record new business wins from the prior year.
The company is successfully winning business from smaller, capital-constrained competitors who are struggling operationally or exiting the industry as new project starts slow.
Strategic focus has shifted toward underpenetrated sectors, including retail footprints in Europe and convenience store capabilities in Asia Pacific, to diversify beyond traditional storage.
Pricing discipline remains a priority, with management choosing to lead with service excellence rather than participating in the price-cutting trends seen among smaller industry participants.

The U.S. dollar starts the day as traders focus on a series of major U.S. economic announcements that may influence expectations on the Federal Reserve's future policy. Following the Federal Reserve's recent announcement to leave their benchmark rate at 3.50% – 3.75%, traders will ****** yze today's JOLTS job openings, factory orders, and the ISM Services PMI, followed by the ADP private payrolls and the highly anticipated U.S. Nonfarm Payrolls report.
These upcoming economic releases will provide the first substantial evidence of if the U.S. economic calendar is starting to fade after recent indications of moderation within the U.S. labor market. Kevin Warsh, formerly of the Federal Reserve, said during the week that decisions from the Fed would remain data-dependent. While this has been the case, market participants have discussed if unemployment numbers that do not meet expectations may help alter the Fed's policy for this year. Reuters also noted the sensitivity of Treasury yields and the dollar to what the Fed calls "macro data."
The euro has support after last week's announcement from the European Central Bank. They stated that they would leave their deposit rate at 2.25%, and that they would continue their cautious, meeting-by-meeting approach. Traders have their eyes on euro zone retail sales and Germany's factory orders to signal the first signs of stabilization of domestic demand, all while ECB policymakers still insist that inflation is close to their 2% target.
Sterling still reflects last week's Bank of England decision to leave the coin at 3.75%. This week's UK services PMI, labor market, and activity data will show market participants what the British economy looks like as policymakers decide how to balance economic growth that is slowing with the danger of inflation continuing.
The US Dollar Index (DXY) is trading at 100.05. After last week's steep drop, this confirms efforts to reestablish a trading range. From the daily chart, the DXY has found support from a long-term ascending trendline that has guided price action since February. DXY buyers have defended the 99.48 horizontal support and prevented price action from weakening even further.

NEW YORK, Aug 3 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks kicked off August on a strong note to send the Dow Industrials to a closing record high, as signs of de-escalating U.S.-Iran tensions pulled down oil prices and Treasury yields in a busy week for earnings and economic data.
Crude prices settled down about 5% after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that talks with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would take place on Monday, though Iran disputed that talks were planned.
The drop in oil prices helped push U.S. Treasury yields lower, even as market participants continued to gauge the odds of a rate hike from the Federal Reserve should the Iran war continue for a prolonged period.
Communication services was the best performing of the 11 major S&P sectors, climbing 4.3% on the back of gains from Meta Platforms and Alphabet. Energy dropped 1.2% as the worst performer on the session.
