On Friday night, the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Brielle Saracini and her husband Sean McGuire provided the highlight of an emotional pregame ceremony when they threw out the game's ceremonial first pitch. Both 37, they represent both the tragedy and the resolve of 9/11, the devastation of loss and the strength of resilience. Brielle's father Victor was the captain of United Flight 175, the plane which impacted the South Tower … where Sean's father, Patrick, worked on the 84th floor.
The two were just 10 years old when their fathers died. They met two years later at Camp Better Days, a camp established to help children who had lost a parent on 9/11, and were married on September 9, 2017. And on Friday night, they walked out on the field together — Brielle wearing a Derek Jeter jersey, Sean bravely wearing a Mike Piazza Mets one — showing that joy can come from even the most horrifying of days.

The Mets are making a change in their bullpen ahead of their series in the Bronx, recalling Jack Weisenburger and sending Chris Devenski back to Triple-A Syracuse.
Weisenburger appeared in three games for the Mets in August, tossing four and a third innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking two and striking out four. In 18 games for Syracuse (13 starts), Weisenburger has a 6.68 ERA over 62 innings pitched, with 53 strikeouts to 34 walks and eight home runs allowed.
Devenski split time between the Mets and Pirates organizations this season, and in six appearances for the Mets was more or less fine until his last appearance against the Marlins, where he was responsible for five of the runs in the Mets' wild 15-14 dub on Wednesday. The 35 year old veteran has a 13.50 ERA for the Mets this season, and an 11.74 ERA across both clubs in the majors.
With a little more than a week left in the Triple-A season and Syracuse two and a half games out of a playoff spot, Devenski will have plenty of opportunity for some innings before, potentially, rejoining the Mets if the need arises.
The second half of the Subway Series with the Yankees starts tonight at 7:05pm on PIX11 with Nolan McLean facing off against Carlos Rodón.

Aaron Judge continues to stay busy for the Yankees as he works his way back from a fractured rib that has had him on the IL since June 2.
Prior to their series finale against the San Diego Padres on Sunday, manager Aaron Boone told the media that the plan is still for Judge to face live pitching on Monday at Yankee Stadium, although the pitchers have yet to be determined.
Judge checked off another box earlier in the week by taking batting practice swings with the rest of the team while on their West Coast road trip and is nearing his long-awaited return.
New York comes back to the Bronx following Sunday's game and has an off day on Monday before beginning a six-game homestand against the Colorado Rockies and Mets starting on Tuesday night.
Asked whether Judge returning to the team on Tuesday is unrealistic, Boone answered, "I don't know. We'll see."

For the Red Sox, this weekend offered a tantalizing opportunity: Take three out of four in the Bronx against the Yankees, and Boston would secure the season tiebreaker and leap its rival in the standings. It would've been a fulfilling culmination of sorts for a club that was, just a few months ago, very down and incredibly out.
Instead, the Sox were outplayed and outclassed in a disappointing series loss that likely complicates their path to postseason glory. An ugly 16-1 drubbing on Sunday, in which infielder Andruw Monasterio had to throw the ninth inning, was the frustrating cherry on the **** mer sundae in which the Yankees took three out of four. For New York, it was a reassuring result, one that further solidified the current AL East pecking order.
The AL East-leading Rays swept the Padres this weekend, pushing their division lead to 4.5 games over New York. That leaves the Yankees atop the wild-card race, despite having the second-best record in the American League. He has played in seven rehab games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. He played the entire game on Thursday night, going 2-for-4 with a single and a double. He has gotten 23 at-bats on the rehab ******* ignment, but he may not be exactly where he wants to be just yet.
"I'm getting more and more at bats, I'm getting to where I want to be at the plate," Anthony told Bridgette Proulx after Thursday's WooSox game. "Am I quite there yet? Probably not. I'm getting close to where I want to be. Like I said, I'll be ready when the time is right."
There is talk of Anthony potentially being called up to join the team in the Bronx for the four-game series against the New York Yankees. However, if he feels like he needs more at-bats, they might let him get those down in Triple-A.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani drew ire from conservatives on Tuesday for mourning the death of a man who was awaiting trial on murder charges.
"I am deeply saddened by the death of a New Yorker in City custody at a jail on Rikers Island early this morning," Mamdani posted on X.
Clarence Woodward, the man Mamdani was referencing, was arrested in 2024 and charged with murder, manslaughter and ******* ault in connection with an unprovoked meat cleaver attack at a Bronx laundromat. At the time, Woodward had 27 prior arrests and had received parole just a month prior to the alleged killing. Woodward had pleaded not guilty to the charges and had not been convicted.
"My thoughts are with his family and loved ones as they grieve this loss. We do not yet know the cause of death, but we do know that too many New Yorkers have died on Rikers Island. The Department of Correction and its oversight partners will investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. Esmerlyn Valdez finally found one. After 24 games without a home run, Valdez turned on a 90 mph fastball from Robbie Ray on Monday night and sent it 413 feet into the left-center-field seats at Petco Park. The ball left his bat at 111.6 mph, giving Pittsburgh its first run in 22 innings and ending the longest power drought of Valdez's young major-league career. It was the kind of swing that made him look like one of baseball's most terrifying rookies earlier this summer. It was also a reminder of why the Pirates cannot let the month that came before scare them away.
Valdez's first exposure to the majors looked almost unfair. Then pitchers adjusted, the strikeouts piled up, and the home runs vanished. That is not evidence that Pittsburgh was fooled by a hot start. It is the part of a rookie season where the league hands back the test with different questions. Now Valdez gets to answer them.

The Pirates had gone 22 consecutive innings without scoring, matching their longest drought of the season, before Valdez stepped to the plate in the sixth inning. His slump-breaking homer did more than remove a zero from the scoreboard. It provided the first sign in weeks of the devastating power that defined his arrival.
Rafael Flores followed with an RBI double later in the inning, and Nick Gonzales eventually delivered the winning hit in the 12th as Pittsburgh escaped with a 3-2 victory. The New York Yankees, who've had new injuries repeatedly pop up this season as if they're playing a game of Whac-A-Mole, will welcome the imminent return of three-time All-Star Cody Bellinger. The outfielder told reporters in the Bronx on Saturday that he'll be activated for Sunday's series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays.
It's expected to be his first outing with the Yankees since he suffered a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring on July 25. He experienced the setback while running the bases after hitting a double in the eighth inning of a road victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Bellinger is coming off his second minor-league rehab game for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Although he went hitless for the RailRiders on Friday, he saw action in left field. The previous day, he notched a single as the team's designated hitter.
"I'm very excited," Bellinger said Saturday of rejoining the Yankees' lineup, per MLB.com.

Max Fried was already playing catch Tuesday in the Bronx, one hopeful sign that the Yankees' veteran lefty might return sooner than later.
Placed on the 15-day injured list due to another left elbow bone bruise, Fried's Monday MRI showed a low level of inflammation, per Yankees manager Aaron Boone.
"In a lot of ways,'' Fried is "close to being able to make his next start,'' Boone told reporters, including the YES Network on Tuesday, before the Yanks' three-game series opener against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
Fried was sidelined earlier this year for 10 weeks due to an elbow bone bruise, returning to the Yanks' rotation on July 22.
That same timeframe would take Fried's recovery into the AL Championship Series, but Boone said it's "not like that'' previous injury.

Heliot Ramos has been a source of frustration for New York Yankees fans since his trade-deadline acquisition. Ramos has gone hitless in his last 23 at-bats and has totaled just two hits in 31 plate appearances as a Yankee. The Yankees are struggling offensively. The Yankees do not hit with runners in scoring position. The Yankees have been too homer-reliant. All three of these tenets are true, especially since the injury bug swept through the Bronx and left them more vulnerable than they've been in several years.
All of their wins and losses are decided by one or two runs. They get excellent pitching, but regardless of the quality of the opposing starter, they often fail to dent home plate due to their middling healthy power options and their struggles with RISP. Since June 18th, they have been batting an absolutely dreadful .170 in these situations, by far the worst in baseball. They are also striking out a league-high 29.4 percent in these spots, limiting opportunities for productive outs.
This game was going like all the others. They squandered three massive opportunities with runners in scoring position off Bryan Woo early on before going down in order in three consecutive innings. Now trailing 1-0 after one measly run scored off a sharp Ryan Weathers, they got one more chance in the seventh and didn't let it go to waste. Two unlikely sources provided two great pieces of hitting to small ball their way to a four-run inning and a 4-1 win.
Weathers started this one out looking to continue the good vibes he's had on the ****** p lately and quickly retired the first two he faced before jumping ahead 0-2 on Julio Rodriguez before throwing four straight ****** and walking him. Things might've gotten hairy with a Dominic Canzone grounder that hit the second base bag if not for a stellar barehanded play by George Lombard Jr., who continues to be a savant defensively.

EAST RUTHERFORD - Jaxson Dart faked the handoff and rolled the other way on a naked bootleg, nothing but green grass between him and the first-down marker on a third-and-5 play during team drills.
"Critical situations" is how Giants coach John Harbaugh termed it, and all Dart did was what he was supposed to do.
The Giants' quarterback got the first down and immediately went down, smoothly sliding feet-first while staying in bounds, essentially ending the game in that scenario.
You would've thought Dart scored the game-winning touchdown on opening night against the Cowboys the way the sideline erupted in delight. Was it a Bronx cheer of sorts? Perhaps not dripping with as much sarcasm, mind you, but the point was the same: the moment itself was appreciated by all.
"I clapped. I applauded," Harbaugh said with a laugh, clapping again for effect in his post-practice news conference Monday. "I applauded when [Dart] did that. It was great."

It's Sunday once more, and you know what that means — it's time for our weekly social media roundup! The Trade Deadline is in the rearview mirror, a top prospect has made his MLB debut, and the heavens opened up and brought a deluge to the Bronx. And while Yankees fans have certainly made their opinions about this week known — oh boy, they sure have — the players, coaches, broadcasters, and yes, even reporters have remained active on the feed. What have they been up to this week? Let's find out!
For those who opted not to take Latin in high school or college (shame, shame, shame), "ave atque vale" is the ending of Catullus poem 101, and translates as "hail and farewell." While the line was originally composed as a funerary gift (the poem is addressed to the "mute ashes" of Catullus's brother), it has taken on a life of its own, and has been used as the ***** le of a now-lost British film from the 1930s, the name of a transfer-of-command military dinner, and several songs in multiple languages, all dealing with simultaneous greetings and farewells.
Thus, it is an appropriate ***** le for the various "hellos" and "goodbyes" posted on social media at this year's trade deadline.
Rather humorously, we learned from the Washington Nationals that Jack Cebert had DMed the Nationals back in middle school to suggest they trade for somebody (the original post was deleted, so, uh, we have no idea how good of a scout he is).
The trade deadline wasn't the only way the Yankees added to their lineup. On August 4th, the Yankees promoted top prospect George Lombard Jr. to The Show — where he homered in his second big league at-bat…right around the same time his brother Jacob, making his professional debut, also hit a home run in his second minor-league at-bat. How awesome is that!

NEW YORK - Battling a health issue, Tommy John shared a heartfelt message to his fans, former teammates and the Yankees on Old-Timer's Day in the Bronx.
"I want to thank the Yankees organization and the Steinbrenner family for giving me this opportunity to say goodbye to everyone, along with all the friends and fans who followed me throughout my 26-year career.''
Per MLB.com, the legendary left-hander, 83, was recently treated for a recurrence of bladder cancer near his Bradenton, Fla. home.
John's pitching career was revived in 1974 by revolutionary reconstructive elbow surgery innovated by Dr. Frank Jobe, using a ligament from the pitcher's right wrist to repair his ulnar collateral ligament.
Today, "Tommy John surgery'' is a staple of the game; Sunday's Yankees starter Gerrit Cole completed his 14th start Saturday following rehab from his surgery, earning a 5-4 win against the Braves.

Aaron Judge has been cleared to begin light workout activity, and the New York Yankees captain said he will return this season from the rib injury that's sidelined him since May 31.
"Oh, I'll be back this season. I don't know why I wouldn't be," the three-time AL MVP said Wednesday at Yankee Stadium. "That was always the plan to come back — sooner than later, definitely. But I never had a thought of not playing this year."
Judge was on the field in baseball gear Wednesday afternoon, stretching, jogging and doing shuffle slides with a resistance band. He was given the green light to take a step forward in his recovery progression after undergoing his latest scan Tuesday.
"Better news. Healing up. So, you get a chance to progress a little bit, do some running, do some more upper-body stuff, and kind of progress towards getting back out on the field and swinging it," he said. "I wish it was completely healed and the fracture was gone and start playing tomorrow, but that's not the case. But, great step forward."

The Yankees' Tuesday night showdown against the Cardinals had more buzz to it than the majority of the 2026 season to date, as rookie George Lombard Jr. was called up to make his MLB debut. It went swimmingly, with Ryan Weathers and company combining on a shutout that featured excellent defense from Lombard at the six as well as a solo shot off Hunter Dobbins for his first career homer.
So there's an energy in the Bronx again today with Lombard preparing for Act II (as it were) while the Yanks go for the series victory over St. Louis to keep pace with the surging division rival Rays and Red Sox. But we're going to have to wait at least a little while to get this one underway. The tarp is on the field at Yankee Stadium and they've already announced that the game will not begin at 7:05pm ET as originally planned.
There's some more rain in the forecast, but there should hopefully be a window if AccuWeather is correct. In the YES Network clip below, announcer Ryan Ruocco also noted that they "are expecting baseball." The Yankees and Cardinals have a mutual offday tomorrow, so it's possible that the finale could get pushed to then, but they would probably like to just get this one over with and have a more natural breather on Thursday. The Cardinals also do not return to New York this year, as they've finished their season series with the Mets.
