Sept 14 (Reuters) - Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy on Monday said they would establish a Virginia supplier program worth up to $1 billion annually for five years if their proposed merger is approved.
They announced merger plans in May, as rising power demand from data centers, electric vehicles and other industries drives a renewed wave of utility consolidation.
• NextEra and Dominion said the new program would direct spending toward contractors, suppliers and service providers in Virginia.
• They proposed extending monthly $10 bill credits to four years from two and increasing Dominion's low-income financial ***** istance by $100 million through 2038.
• The commitments include a $100 million workforce development fund, an annual energy summit in the state and maintaining the current employee headcount there for five years.

MADISON – Already in Week 2, the Wisconsin football team has been anything but immune to injuries at some key positions.
Wide receiver Malachi Coleman and linebacker Mason Posa both exited the Badgers' 36-9 win over Western Illinois with injuries. Posa could have returned if necessary, coach Luke Fickell said afterward, but Coleman could not.
Quarterback Colton Joseph, meanwhile, was "a little dinged up from last weekend," Fickell said in his postgame press conference. Fickell similarly said that running back Abu Sama III may have gotten "a little bit of a ding on the shoulder."
Those are in addition to first-team offensive lineman Emerson Mandell's continued absence as he recovers from an injury that he suffered in fall camp.

The Wisconsin Badgers are in primetime to start the season, as they're taking on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Lambeau Field on Sunday, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. on NBC.
Wisconsin is coming off a 4-8 season, which was their worst season by win percentage since 1990. But this year's Badgers are quite different, as the program added over 30 transfers in the offseason, while making a few organizational changes with the coaching staff and front office.

Less-than-truckload carrier Old Dominion Freight Line saw yield growth accelerate in August, but tonnage remained slightly negative, according to a Thursday update.
The Thomasville, North Carolina-based company's daily revenue increased 12.4% year over year in August, an improvement from the 8.2% y/y growth rate logged in July. However, diesel fuel prices increased 46% y/y in August compared with a 31% y/y increase in July. (Fuel was up 10% sequentially in August.)
Less-than-truckload fuel surcharge programs include a step function as diesel prices rise, typically resulting in better margins.
Old Dominion's (NASDAQ: ODFL) yield growth accelerated from July, both with and without fuel surcharges. August revenue per hundredweight (yield) was likely 13% higher y/y with fuel surcharges, and roughly 5.5% higher excluding fuel. The July growth rates were 9.3% and 4.2%, respectively. (Growth rates for the two months combined were 11.3% and 4.8%, respectively.) Higher shipment weights were a modest drag on the yield metrics in both months.
"Old Dominion produced solid revenue growth for July and August, with underlying demand trends remaining relatively consistent as the quarter has progressed," said Marty Freeman, president and CEO, in a news release. "In addition, the strength and consistency of our industry-leading service continue to support the ongoing improvement in our LTL revenue per hundredweight."

One might not want to hold their breath for a decision between Deuce Adams or Ryan Hopkins either.
"I don't know that we'll ever designate a whole lot of who is the No. 2," Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell said in his Week 1 press conference. "We've all seen this in the past. I think the opportunities are still going to be there for those guys to compete on a daily basis."
Fickell said Aug. 31 that both Adams and Hopkins received second-team quarterback reps in practice. (Colton Joseph, the presumed starter ever since transferring from Old Dominion, obviously is taking the first-team quarterback reps.)
Wisconsin did not release an unofficial depth chart ahead of the Sept. 6 season opener against No. 5 Notre Dame. Even if there was a depth chart, though, UW could theoretically list QB2 as Hopkins "or" Adams.

All eyes are on Old Dominion transfer quarterback Colton Joseph, and rightfully so, but linebacker Mason Posa is on a mission this season with the Wisconsin Badgers.
Posa may only be a sophomore, but he racked up 58 total tackles as a true freshman. The New Mexico native had four sacks and a pair of forced fumbles, so it's safe to say the sky is the limit for him this season.
Wisconsin has gotten better across the board, whether that's with underclassmen who have begun to develop into stars or through the talent head coach Luke Fickell acquired in the transfer portal.
Joseph's dual-threat abilities set him apart from the rest, and that was showcased with his opening-play touchdown run against the 2026 National Champions, Indiana, in week one last season.

It doesn't take a Wisconsin Badger aficionado to see that Luke Fickell's Wisconsin squads have struggled to ******* ert themselves as offensive powerhouses. Last season, the Badgers finished their 4-8 campaign with the third-worst scoring offense in the nation, scoring a paltry 12.8 points per game.However, after an offensive revamp that has seen a new starting quarterback, Colton Joseph, join the program, there has been a refresh ******* on hit heading into a crucial season for Fickell.In a recent interview with the Big Ten Network, the Old Dominion transfer was asked what to expect from the Badgers' 2026 offense.

The Trump administration is enlisting private companies to conduct cyberattacks on foreign cybercriminals in a major policy shift that experts say could come with legal risk for the companies.
The move gives vetted companies a prominent role in hacking operations that have historically been the dominion of US law enforcement, spy and military agencies.
Companies can use cyber tools to surveil foreign criminals and disrupt their networks under the "control and oversight" of the new federal program, according to a memo issued Wednesday by President Donald Trump.
The program's goal is to punish foreign criminal groups that cause Americans billions of dollars in annual losses. The program's remit is foreign criminal groups, not governments.
"American businesses' innovative capabilities have historically been underutilized in efforts to identify and disrupt criminal networks operating in cyberspace," the memo says.

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Potomac Falls Panthers are coming off their first winning season since 2021.
In year two under head coach Yaw Adioo, the team finished 7-5, winning a playoff game vs. Lightridge, before falling to Riverbend in the VHSL 5D region seimfinals.
DC News Now sports intern Joey cicini spoke with coach and players from Potomac Falls ahead of the season.
The Panthers open up their 2026 campaign against Dominion at hyome on Friday, August 28.

There was an obvious weakness on Duke's defense last season, and it came in the secondary, with the Blue Devils allowing 276.8 passing yards per game, good for 134th out of 136 teams in the FBS.
Manny Diaz has made it clear that playing time in this year's secondary is up for grabs for everyone.
"There are no jobs claimed in the secondary, so everybody understands that every time there's a ball thrown, someone has a chance to earn playing time this year," Diaz said.
To fix what ailed Duke last season, Diaz and his staff brought some talent in from the portal, including Che Ojarikre (Stanford), Dylan Flowers (Western Kentucky), and Kyon Loud (Montana), who will all have a chance to win spots at the cornerback position. Ojarikre could also be seen as Chandler Rivers' replacement at nickel after the latter took his talents to the NFL.
At safety, DaShawn Stone and Andrew Pellicciotta return but will be challenged for playing time by Patrick Smith-Young, who started 25 games between his time at North Texas and Old Dominion.

Following an ACL injury sustained by TE Princeton Fant during training camp on Monday, the Dallas Cowboys have claimed former 2023 7th-round pick Zack Kuntz, who was recently let go by the Las Vegas Raiders.
Kuntz, drafted by the New York Jets out of Old Dominion, has spent three seasons in the NFL. He was on the Jets' practice squad in 2023 and 2024, and signed a future contract with the Miami Dolphins in 2026, but was released in early May. He then joined the Raiders on July 31, only to be released a few days later. To date, Kuntz has not recorded a catch in the regular season, but here's a scouting report of what he brings to the table as the coaches try to elicit better results than other teams have realized.

On Friday evening of July 31 — exactly 29 days before the 2026 college football season kicks off — game-changing news came out of the U.S. District Court of Colorado. The court ruling by Judge Charlotte Sweeney granted a preliminary injunction that requires the NCAA to provide an additional year of eligibility to all athletes who graduated high school in 2022 and exhausted their eligibility during the 2025-26 academic year.
The ruling aligns with the Protect College Sports Act, a bill currently on the Senate floor which proposes a 5-year eligibility window for all student-athletes. However, before this dramatically shakes up collegiate rosters during fall camp, the ruling is expected to be appealed by the NCAA per a memo issued by NCAA Chief Legal Officer Scott Bearby.
After Friday's news, graduated players from across the country expressed interest in returning to college football. The Sun Belt Conference had several of its stars express interest, per On3 Sports' Pete Nakos, including former James Madison inside linebacker Trent Hendrick and ULM defensive end Kevontay Wells. The NCAA cannot bar players from entering the transfer portal per Sweeney's ruling, so affected players have the option to return to their schools or transfer elsewhere.

Jul. 31—GRAND FORKS — Some college football players arrive on campus with the immediate ability to be factors in the lineup.
Others take time to mature and develop, patiently waiting for an opportunity in the second half of their college eligibility.
Crookston's Ethan Boll is in the second category in the UND football program. However, the time is now for the junior linebacker.
During the first week of fall camp, Boll has been running with the starting defense alongside second-year Old Dominion transfer Michael Devereaux.
"I've seen him take a level up in knowledge of the defense, and he's really come a long way since January or February of 2025 when we first got here," UND linebackers coach Ben Watkins said. "He has gone from learning football and the position to really understanding, at a conceptual level, what we're trying to do, but also what offenses are trying to do against us in terms of the defense."

The Commonwealth of Virginia might be best known in college athletics for its major schools — Virginia and Virginia Tech.
However, the two Atlantic Coast Conference members don't have a monopoly on the best players to have participated in the state.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia university missed opportunities to learn of a student's terrorism-related conviction before the man opened fire in an ROTC class in March, injuring two students and killing an Army veteran who fought back with "extraordinary heroism," an investigative report released Tuesday found.
The federal probation officer working with Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, who spent eight years in prison for attempting to aid the Islamic State, did not share Jalloh's criminal background with Old Dominion University, despite the serious nature of the offense, according to the report, which was produced by the law firm Cooley on behalf of the university.
Jalloh, who also died in the March attack, had attended the public university in Norfolk beginning in 2007, was suspended in 2010 and reenrolled after his early release from prison in December 2024. He was readmitted to the school in May last year.
No federal or state law enforcement agency reported his prior conviction either, the report said.
State law prohibits the university from inquiring about student criminal history before admission or readmission, according to the report. The university could have asked readmitted students to voluntarily disclose their criminal history but did not at the time, the report said.

USC football plays Wisconsin this season. Two key Badgers the Trojans must plan for are linebacker Mason Posa and quarterback Colton Joseph. Nittany Lions Wire wrote about both players:

Shares in Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ: ODFL) declined by 11.9% last week after a downgrade from a Citi ****** yst. Even though the price rose to $228 from $225, the ****** yst downgraded the stock to sell from neutral.
The freight company is known for being a high-quality operator in the niche less-than-truckload (LTL) market in the U.S. The LTL market involves moving shipments that are too large for package delivery companies, such as UPS and FedEx, but too small to fill a trailer. It's a relatively complex operation as its trailers are often filled with shipments for multiple customers, implying sophisticated logistics and multiple network terminals.
