NASCAR's 16-driver Chase field opens its 10-race championship run Sunday night with the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. But the regular season left behind more than race winners and a postseason field.
There were run-ins, rivalries, manufacturer battles and even a legal fight away from the track.
Before the green flag falls on NASCAR's first Chase since the championship format was overhauled, here are six of the biggest feuds, clashes and tension points that helped shape the 2026 regular season.

Palantir's Q2 revenue rose 93% to $1.94 billion, including 149% growth in U.S. commercial revenue, so the alliance lands on real momentum. Arrowstreet Capital held 20,517,115 shares at June 30 after increasing its stake by 97%.
The valuation is the obvious counterweight. A partnership announcement without disclosed revenue cannot by itself justify a large daily move. Receivables concentration, stock-based compensation, and competition from clouds and consultants deserve attention. Hedge-fund breadth had already weakened: Insider Monkey counted 86 funds holding Palantir at June 30, down from 96 at March 31.
Globant's AI Pod offers a more explicit delivery unit. Configurations support roughly six, 12, or 24 integration flows or APIs per month, and the company cited benchmarks including up to 80% automation and 15% to 25% faster time to value. That makes capacity tangible. Twenty-three hedge funds held Globant S.A. (NYSE:GLOB) in Q2, down from 25 in Q1. Pzena Investment Management reported 3,859,718 shares after adding 31%.
Globant's problem is that reusable pods can still be labor businesses. The service remains on a waitlist, the benchmark outcomes are not guaranteed customer results, and AI may pressure billing rates even as it improves productivity.

Vertiv, Applied Optoelectronics, and Innodata entered September well below their 2026 highs despite strong operating growth. The pullbacks do not make them interchangeable bargains. Vertiv Holdings Co. (NYSE:VRT) sells power and cooling, Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAOI) supplies optical transceivers, and Innodata Inc. (NASDAQ:INOD) provides data engineering and model-evaluation services.
Vertiv's second-quarter sales rose 24% to $3.27 billion, adjusted operating margin expanded 410 basis points to 22.6%, and adjusted free cash flow reached $925 million. The bull case is rising power and thermal content per AI rack. The bear case is project timing, supply congestion, and expectations built around long-duration demand. Insider Monkey counted 112 hedge funds holding Vertiv Holdings Co. (NYSE:VRT) in Q2, up from 96 in Q1. Cliff Asness's AQR Capital reported 2,686,683 shares, 0.5% more sequentially.
Applied Optoelectronics posted record revenue of $191.9 million, while 800G volume more than doubled from Q1. Management expects 800G and 1.6-terabit demand to exceed production capacity through mid-2027. That capacity ramp is the bull case; a 27.7% GAAP gross margin, a $22.8 million GAAP loss, customer concentration, and execution are the bear case. Fifty-four hedge funds held Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAOI), down from 55. Value Aligned Research disclosed 1,595,124 shares, 26% more sequentially.
Innodata's revenue grew 58% to $92.1 million and adjusted EBITDA rose 92% to $25.4 million. Its reusable data sets and evaluation work can expand margins, but large-customer dependence and rapidly changing model-training methods create risk. Twenty-five hedge funds held Innodata Inc. (NASDAQ:INOD), up from 20. Mitch Rubin's RiverPark Advisors reported 2,042 shares, 18% more than in Q1.
AAOI's August 14 short-interest settlement showed 10,421,985 shares sold short, equal to 12.81% of float, with 0.69 days to cover..The elevated short-float percentage signals substantial bearish positioning, while the low days-to-cover ratio suggests shorts could cover relatively quickly at recent trading volumes.Vertiv has the strongest cash generation, AAOI the sharpest capacity upside, and Innodata the lightest physical footprint. A buying opportunity exists only if margins, customer diversification, and cash conversion justify each stock's remaining expectations. The risks also differ in timing. Vertiv can lose on delayed data-center construction, AAOI can lose during the manufacturing ramp, and Innodata can lose when a major customer changes vendors or training methods. Investors should therefore avoid using distance from a high as valuation ******* ysis. Order conversion, gross-margin durability, customer concentration, and diluted share growth are the comparable checkpoints. The pullback improves entry prices, but only operating evidence can establish value. Balance-sheet resilience matters most when capacity plans meet a weaker cycle.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Pat White's record-setting career at West Virginia two decades ago came full circle Saturday when the school retired his No. 5 jersey.
A ceremony was held before kickoff of the Mountaineers' season opener against Coastal Carolina. The crowd was decked out in white T-shirts and jerseys while West Virginia's players donned white road jerseys and pants, the same combination used 18 years after the school honored White in his final home game on a snowy December night.
White went 35-8 as a starter and established himself as one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks. He is the only starting quarterback in NCAA history to win four bowl games, including the Sugar Bowl against Georgia after the 2005 season and the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma after the 2007 season.
"Twenty years later, they're still talking about what he did and what his teammates did," West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters earlier in the week.
Rodriguez recruited White out of Daphne, Alabama, in 2004. Rodriguez gave him the chance to play quarterback, unlike other schools that wanted him to switch to different positions.

Duolingo shares rose about 7% on September 1 after Evercore ISI upgraded the stock from In Line to Outperform and doubled its price target from $105 to $210. From the prior closing level, the new objective implied roughly 42% upside. The **** yst's central argument was that competitive fears around general-purpose products such as ChatGPT had become exaggerated. Duolingo, Inc. (NASDAQ:DUOL) still owns a habit-forming consumer product, a global brand, and a large base of learners who want structure rather than an open-ended chatbot.

That distinction matters. A language model can explain grammar, simulate conversation, and create personalized exercises, but it does not automatically reproduce Duolingo's streaks, curriculum, social reinforcement, or mobile distribution. Duolingo can also use the same models to create content faster and improve speaking practice. Evercore raised its 2027 and 2028 earnings estimates, suggesting that AI may support engagement and operating leverage instead of simply eroding the moat.
The bear case is not imaginary. Chatbots are improving quickly, and voice interaction makes free-form tutoring more natural. Consumers can divide their time among many inexpensive applications, while Duolingo must keep spending on product development and marketing to remain distinctive. A doubled price target following a major decline may signal that expectations became too low, but it does not prove that competitive pressure has peaked. Valuation can still compress if user growth or bookings slow.
Hedge funds leaned modestly more bullish in Q2. Insider Monkey counted 39 funds holding Duolingo, Inc. (NASDAQ:DUOL), up from 37 in Q1. AQR Capital Management increased its stake more than twentyfold to 2,332,543 shares, one of the quarter's clearest institutional changes. The filing cannot show whether that was a long-term conviction bet, a quantitative signal, or a hedge.

Twenty-one years ago, the White Sox swept the Astros in the World Series to end an 88-year championship drought, bringing baseball jubilation to the south side of Chicago. Occasional regular-season interleague series followed until 2013, when Houston made the move from the NL Central to the AL West, inviting the possibility that the two franchises could meet far more frequently in October. But that has occurred just once in the years since, with the Astros eliminating the White Sox in the 2021 ALDS en route to the pennant and sending the White Sox spiraling into a dark period for the franchise while Houston was in the middle of its golden era.

The Astros took advantage of the opportunity, taking three of four to close the gap with the White Sox to just 1.5 games.

Twenty-nine years after the Paris crash that killed Princess Diana, Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul, Trevor Rees-Jones remains the only person who was inside their Mercedes and survived.
Rees-Jones left the Ritz Paris in the front passenger seat shortly after midnight on Aug. 31, 1997. The Mercedes crashed into a pillar in the Pont de l'Alma underpass. Paul and Fayed died at the scene, while Diana was taken to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where she died several hours later.
Rees-Jones was not Diana's personal bodyguard. The former British Army paratrooper worked for the Fayed family and had been ******* igned to protect Dodi, which also placed Diana within his security responsibilities while the couple traveled together, as PEOPLE reported on the crash's 29th anniversary.
He survived with severe head, chest and facial injuries. For the investigations that followed, however, one consequence proved especially significant, Rees-Jones could remember leaving the Ritz, but almost nothing reliable about what happened afterward.
French investigators questioned Rees-Jones within weeks of the crash, hoping the sole surviving occupant could explain the Mercedes' final journey. His head injury had left major gaps in his memory, and those early interviews produced little that investigators considered useful.

The number 10 placed the ball into the top corner, and goalkeeper Hugo Souza parried it, leaving a rebound. Well positioned, Oliva took advantage and scored the only goal of the match.
Late in the first half, in the 44th minute, Neymar Jr. went down near the area with the ball. He got up, recovered, and passed it to Barreal. The forward entered the box and hit a low shot on goal, which was saved by the opposing goalkeeper.
In the second half, Santos's defense completely neutralized Corinthians's attack. On the few chances that reached Peixe's goal, Gabriel Brazão made comfortable saves.

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) has had its best month since 2025, driven by a short squeeze and U.S. Treasury buybacks of long-term securities. It's up 24% this month as of Aug. 28. Two leading automotive giants, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) and Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE:TM), represent contrasting strategies in the U.S. auto market. Twenty years ago, GM sold twice as many vehicles in the U.S. as Toyota. Today, that gap has narrowed dramatically. Through July, GM's sales lead over Toyota dwindled to just over 100,000 vehicles, as reported on August 21. The shifting dynamic highlights two distinct operating models: GM prioritizing disciplined volume and profit margins, while Toyota aggressively expands its hybrid-heavy lineup to capture market share.
Toyota's push into electrified vehicles, predominantly gas-electric hybrids, is rapidly closing the volume gap. In Q2 2026, Toyota Motor North America reported U.S. sales of 673,971 vehicles, up 1.1% year-over-year. Driver demand was led by its electrified options, which jumped 19.5% to 383,091 units, representing 56.8% of Toyota's total Q2 volume.
Financially, Toyota's hybrid strategy gives it strong top-line momentum without forcing full reliance on pure electric vehicles. Its multi-pathway approach offers 33 electrified models across the Toyota and Lexus lineups, helping maintain high consumer interest while keeping incentive spending among the lowest among full-line automakers.
While Toyota closes the distance, GM retained its spot as America's #1 automaker by volume in Q2 2026, selling 714,896 vehicles. Total sales dipped 4.2% year-over-year due to inventory constraints, discontinued models, and a softer EV backdrop. However, GM intentionally chose not to chase lower-margin volume, focusing instead on high-margin trucks and SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Sierra.
GM's financial execution remains sharp. In Q2 2026, GM delivered an 8.6% North American EBIT-adjusted margin, up 2.5 percentage points year-over-year, and raised its full-year 2026 guidance for the second time. Reduced EV manufacturing losses and pricing stability have kept profitability resilient despite lower unit sales growth.

In what was the biggest race of his life, Ryan Preece not only earned his first career win at Daytona, but he clinched himself into the Chase for the first time in his career. This was not only huge for his season, but this race was personal. Considering the scary crashes Preece experienced in 2023 and 2025 at Daytona, it was fitting for it to be a happy ending this time. Yet, for what seemed like a dream scenario for RFK Racing and this #60 team, it definitely did not go to plan.
Things went array early in the race. As the field came to end stage one, Kyle Larson gave RFK's Chris Buescher a bad push. Buescher would hit the outside wall, while Kyle Larson and Ryan Preece would Tokyo drift through the grass. Preece's involvement in the incident was huge intially. Entering the race, he was one of three drivers who was fighting for the remaining two Chase positions. While this crash didn't eliminate him, it did send him from third to eighth in just a few hundred feet. This would end up costing Preece five points. In addition, his competitor Shane van Gisbergen would benefit from the incident, passing the crash to win the stage. This exchange put him another seven points behind his target.
Preece made up for that loss by clawing his way back in stage two to finish second. Throughout the race, he earned himself twelve stage points, while van Gisbergen only scored the ten. While two points isn't significant, it still is something.
The latter portion of the race was an uneventful strategic battle. With 39 laps to go, Ross Chastain led a group of Chevy's into pit road. Then, another handful of drivers countered with around twenty laps to go. These drivers would attempt to gain an advantage, but it would later be washed away. Preece and others would remain on the track, hoping for some luck.
With around ten laps to go, thing got chaotic while Preece was leading. Then with six laps to go, it snapped. Carson Hocevar made an abrupt move on Preece entering turn three, where he would lose control of his car. Hocevar would then come back onto the track, make hard contact with the outside wall, and collect Erik Jones in the process.

Terrion Arnold, the 24th pick of the 2024 draft, was released by Detroit in June while facing felony charges he has denied, and he agreed to terms with Seattle this month. Reed inherited the No. 1 job, and the group behind him has been shuffled and interrupted by injuries throughout camp.
Tim Twentyman wrote in the club's own training camp position preview in last month that "the Arnold release hurts Detroit's depth at the position," adding it would not surprise him if general manager Brad Holmes added to the spot before the regular season. In Kuala Lumpur, a star-studded side featuring Sachin Tendulkar, Anil ***** ble, VVS Laxman and Harbhajan Singh bowed out in the league phase. Twenty-five years later, Laxman returned to the multi-sport arena, this time as coach, guiding India to gold in Hangzhou.

Now, as the Shreyas Iyer-led Indian team prepares to defend its ***** le at Korogi Athletic Park in Aichi Prefecture, ***** an beginning with the quarterfinals on Sept 28, Laxman spoke exclusively to TOI of the unique appeal of multi-sport events, India's Asian Games campaign and the experience of being part of the cricket team's journey from its first CWG appearance to maiden Asian Games gold.

"My first experience of a multi-discipline event was at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. The whole experience of being part of the Indian contingent feels really great, and that kind of experience every young cricketer should get. It's great that I've had that opportunity both as a player and coach," said the head of cricket at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

Recalling the Hangzhou experience, the former batting great said, "Obviously, it's not like your mainstream cricket series or tournaments that we've been part of since we started playing for the country. A group of us went to support the Indian badminton team, which was fantastic."

Beyond the game, Laxman believes it is about knowledge sharing.

"Given the experience and the exposure the Indian cricketers have, at the end of the match it's also about sharing that experience with players from other countries. After Nepal ran us close in the previous edition of the Asian Games, their coach invited me to talk to the team, which was an opportunity to share knowledge. It's not just me, but that's the way the entire group of players will approach the experience," Laxman stated.

Braunschweig also had two clear-cut opportunities through Sturm and Aaron Opoku, but they found themselves level at the break after conceding two late goals. CHICAGO (AP) — A beluga whale died days after it was transported hundreds of miles to a Chicago aquarium from a shuttered Ontario park as part of an ongoing effort to rescue Canada's last captive whales.
The whale, a 23-year-old female named Peekachu, died suddenly Tuesday as caretakers tried to rehydrate her, Chicago's Shedd Aquarium said in a news release. Peekachu was one of eight whales moved from Marineland park in Ontario to the Chicago aquarium this summer — four in July, and four more this month.
Marineland shut its doors in 2024, kicking off a race to find new homes for its 30 beluga whales and four dolphins before they would be euthanized. The Canadian government finally approved a plan to export the whales to the Shedd Aquarium and four other marine parks in January.
Twenty whales — 19 belugas and one killer whale — have died at Marineland since 2019, according to provincial government data obtained through freedom-of-information laws and official statements.
The complex operation to bring the whales to the Shedd Aquarium saw them hoisted in custom-made slings and held in temperature-controlled containers, aquarium officials previously told The ****** ociated Press. Their behavior and health were carefully monitored to the minute once they arrived, officials said.

Twenty teams will be in action on Friday evening as players get one more chance to either get some game work ahead of the regular season starting in two weeks or impress the coaching staff enough to make the roster or practice squad.
Heading into the final week of season games, there is only one quarterback battle left to be decided. The Atlanta Falcons haven't yet decided on a Week 1 starter. The Falcons are theoretically deciding between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr., but fans have been impressed with rookie Jack Strand in camp.

What a dominant showing from start to finish: our Red Bulls celebrated a thoroughly deserved 3–0 win over Mjällby on home turf to secure their spot in the UEFA Europa League's league phase. After a dominant but goalless first half, our lads were rewarded after the break with a brace from Konate and an additional strike from Haris Tabakovic.
After a cautious start, our lads steadily upped the tempo and created their first big chance in the twelfth minute. Tabakovic intercepted a misplaced pass from the Swedes, kept his composure, and played a sharp, low ball across the box—Eddi Baidoo missed connecting with it in the centre by just an inch or two. With possession hovering around 70 percent at times and clear dominance in terms of shots on goal, our Red Bulls took control of the match early on.
Mjällby tried to disrupt our flow of play with aggressive tackling, picking up their first two yellow cards after just twenty minutes. Following a heavy challenge by Granath on Nikolas Veratschnig, our right-back - clearly in pain - even called for a VAR check, though none was forthcoming. While the visitors offered absolutely nothing in attack, they made life difficult for our lads through sheer physicality.
In the final fifteen minutes of the first half, we carved out further opportunities to take the lead against the Swedes' deep defensive block. First, Abubakr Barry unleashed a well-placed long-range shot following a counter-attack (32'). Shortly after, Mjällby's tight man-marking prevented a goal when Baidoo played a ball across to Tabakovic. Just before the half-time whistle, Veratschnig curled a dangerous free-kick towards the corner of the target, but Mjällby goalkeeper Wallinder was equal to it with a strong save. The first half ended goalless.

The bigger change is not in the price: the company has moved its lead story off the on-demand library it was built on and the quality side of its engagement case out of public view.

In earlier calls management described the company narrowly: it was in the subscription entertainment business, and its core strategy was giving members exclusive first-run movies. That is no longer the whole of it. In the July 2026 call management says the definition of TV has broadened and its own has changed with it. The core TV series and film still take the vast majority of programming spend; what management foregrounds alongside them is live programming, cloud games, video podcasts, and carrying content partner TF1's local programming inside Netflix for French members. When the Arizona Cardinals waived Trey Benson with an injury designation on Monday, Aug. 24, it earned them unwanted admission into a dubious club.
Twenty-eight months after they entered the NFL, 96 of the first 100 picks in the 2024 draft remain on active rosters. Benson, now, is among the four castaways — until and unless he gets scooped up elsewhere.
The three others: Ja'Lynn Polk, a second-round wide receiver who finished his rookie season with 12 catches and missed all of his second season with injuries before retiring; Jermaine Burton, a third-round wide receiver who developed a habit of missing practices and was involved in a domestic dispute; and Terrion Arnold, who currently faces the possibility of life in prison on kidnapping and robbery charges.
That is the company Benson currently holds. But most concerningly, he's not alone. For the Cardinals, this may just be the beginning of a week-long purge of former top draft picks.
In that same 2024 draft, the Cardinals selected cornerback Elijah Jones with the 90th pick. They seem to have five roster locks at cornerback, meaning Jones could be competing with Starling Thomas V for one roster spot. If that's the case, Thomas would seem to have the inside edge, despite a poor preseason. He was a reliable contributor in 2024 — something Jones has never been — and may need more time to return to full strength after a torn ACL last July.

TWENTY-FOUR SERVICE ERRORS.
How did Marquette get to a fifth set against #2 Texas on Monday night at Fiserv Forum? The Longhorns handed Marquette 24 of their 93 points — 25.8%! — in the match by way of just completely whiffing on a serve, either long or into the net. Over and over and over and over again. Four in the first, eight in the second, four in the third, six in the fourth, including the point that tipped the match to a fifth set, and then two more in the final frame as well.
Honestly, it's amazing that the eight errors in the second didn't bite them in the ******* worse, as UT won that frame 25-19, nearly entirely because of a 7-0 run late in the frame. Turns out Marquette hitting -0.167 in the set with six errors against five kills was very bad for the Golden Eagles' chances of winning this match!

First, Marquette got a 25-22 first set victory, largely because they turned 14-all into 19-14 and then held on from there.

Now that the dust is starting to settle on Saturday's opening-day defeat to Ipswich down at Portman Road, let's take a look at what went wrong and why there's no need to panic.
We've not lost many games under Régis Le Bris, so the feeling after a defeat isn't something we're used to. This is the first time that we have lost our opening league game under Le Bris, and it's never nice to have the sinking feeling that comes with any defeat, but upon reflection on Saturday's game, there's currently nothing to suggest the need to panic.
We started the opening twenty minutes positively, looking to set our stall out early and take control of the game. We also had a great chance after the first five minutes through some quick interplay and an opening for Brian Brobbey, who really ought to have done better with this chance.
We had the better share of possession as we looked to settle into a rhythm. Unfortunately, we were unable to do so all afternoon and, on twenty-five minutes, a mistake from Luke O'Nien led to Julio Enciso nipping in and robbing us on the halfway line.
Some calamitous defending followed, and we were 1-0 down before we knew it. Brobbey also had a golden chance in the second half which he should've buried.
