NEW YORK (AP) — Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer in the second inning off rookie Nolan McLean, and the New York Yankees beat the New York Mets 6-4 on Friday night.
Ben Rice also homered as the Yankees won for the 17th time in 24 games and moved a season-high 23 games over .500 on a night the team remembered the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Rookie Spencer Jones added an RBI single in the first inning and Ryan McMahon hit an RBI single in the eighth as the Yankees remained three games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East and moved 5 1/2 ahead of Boston for the first American League wild card.
Carlos Rodón (6-3) allowed two runs and three hits in a season-high 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander notched two of his eight strikeouts on slugger Juan Soto, who heard boos from Yankee fans before each at-bat.

NEW YORK (AP) — Twenty-five years ago, Brielle Saracini was 10 years old and trying to cope with losing her father, Victor Saracini, the pilot on United flight 175, which was taken over by the 9/11 hijackers and crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
Spurred on by a friend, she wrote a letter to Derek Jeter, met the Yankees captain at Yankee Stadium and formed a lifelong friendship.
On Friday, as New York commemorated the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, Saracini threw out the ceremonial first pitch with Jeter watching from the mound before the Yankees hosted the crosstown Mets.
"I remember just talking about anything and everything and anything that kind of came through my mind that day and you just made it so comfortable and I remember just feeling normal for a day, which was hard to do," Saracini said while sitting next to Jeter at a news conference. "The odds were stacked against me that day but I remember just taking a minute and just having normal conversations and just feeling like a kid."

Both 37, they represent both the tragedy and the resolve of 9/11, the devastation of loss and the strength of resilience. Brielle's father Victor was the captain of United Flight 175, the plane which impacted the South Tower … where Sean's father, Patrick, worked on the 84th floor.
The two were just 10 years old when their fathers died. They met two years later at Camp Better Days, a camp established to help children who had lost a parent on 9/11, and were married on September 9, 2017. And on Friday night, they walked out on the field together — Brielle wearing a Derek Jeter jersey, Sean bravely wearing a Mike Piazza Mets one — showing that joy can come from even the most horrifying of days.
Brielle Saracini and Sean McGuire share a special moment in the Bronx.

As kids, they both lost their fathers on 9/11. They met in 2003, became friends first, then fell in love.

They married in 2017.
