Welcome back to BCB After Dark: the coolest club for night owls, early risers, new parents and Cubs fans abroad. Come on in and join us. It's always good to see a friendly face. There's no cover charge. The dress code is casual. The hostess will seat you now. Bring your own beverage.
BCB After Dark is the place for you to talk baseball, music, movies, or anything else you need to get off your chest, as long as it is within the rules of the site. The late-nighters are encouraged to get the party started, but everyone else is invited to join in as you wake up the next morning and into the afternoon.
Last week I asked you if reliever Daniel Palencia should get sent down to Iowa. You folks were rough as 79 percent of you wanted to see Palencia go down to Des Moines.
Here's the part with the music and the movies. You can do with it what you will. We hope you enjoy it, however.
Sometimes you just got to play the hits. Here's guitarist George Benson, joined by guitarist Carlos Santana, jammin' Benson's hit "Breezin'" on the Midnight Special sometimes in the seventies. I believe this is 1978.

Missouri Tigers football is just two days away from kicking off its 2026 season, and that means Tiger Talk is also back at Harpo's in Columbia.
Head coach Eli Drinkwitz and team captains Dominick Giudice and Santana Banner sat down with Mike Kelly to talk the team's season opener coming up Thursday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Here's what they had to say about the 135th team in program history:
On the anticipation of the season opener: "Really looking forward to Thursday night: that new north end zone, and just the excitement that's been building for us to be sold out again. And 'Kickoff in CoMo', what a cool tradition that we've developed here at the University of Missouri."
On the weather expected Thursday (projected temp at kickoff is 92 degrees): "Advantage us. We're ready for the weather: our guys have practiced in it, our guys have attacked it. We'll be hydrated. It's football season, it's time to play. And I know fans, you're going to need to make sure you hydrate, take care of yourself, and don't peak too soon with the alcohol. It's going to be a great night; don't let that weather affect you."
On the team's fall camp: "I was very impressed with the way our guys handled themselves throughout camp. I was impressed with how physically demanding we were able to make it on them, while also keeping our guys relatively healthy and pushing us to the point of, I think, being prepared and ready for the opportunity."

After the 2-1 victory over Red Bull Bragantino this Saturday (29) at MorumBIS in São Paulo (SP), in the 25th round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship, Gustavo Santana spoke in the mixed zone. At 20 years old, the "Made in Cotia" forward scored his first goal for Tricolor's professional team.
"I received a lot of support from the coaching staff and my teammates, which gave me a lot of confidence. I'm here to help, that's what I've always done. I'll always give everything for São Paulo and for the fans who came here and put on a beautiful show," said the number 43.
The forward also commented on the opportunity to start the match.
"We work for this and look forward to this moment a lot. Thank God I was calm for today's game, focused on helping São Paulo. It's very rewarding, and I try to make the most of these moments. It's an honor to have this support and this confidence from the coaching staff," he added.
Tricolor returns to the field against Atlético-MG on Saturday (05) at 6:30 p.m., once again at MorumBIS, in the next round of the Brasileirão.

Editor's Note: The Times Union is providing live coverage of today's 2026 Travers Stakes Day at Saratoga Race Course.
SARATOGA SPRINGS - In the Grade 1 Forego Stakes, Hymn was him.
Ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., Hymn chased speedy pacesetter Tip Top Thomas through the opening portions of the seven-furlong Grade 1 sprint, made a huge surge coming down the stretch to take the lead and held on for the win over a trio of late-rushing challengers Saturday during the Travers undercard at Saratoga Race Course.
It was the first career Grade 1 win for Hymn, whose career transformed when trainer Ron Moquett made the decision to make him a gelding. Since that move, he's won four of his five starts.
"I thought he was a beautiful, wonderful horse from Day 1, and I hated having to geld him," Moquett said. "When I did, I said, 'Now, let's just make him a racehorse and go try to win the Breeders' Cup.'"

Tonight's White Sox starter, Luis Castillo, was pretty darn good until he wasn't. From 2019-2025, an ERA of 3.48 and a bWAR of 21.7. This year, something's gone off, I dunno what it is; his fastball's ticked down a notch or two, maybe that's it. Happens to all of us eventually. He throws it at around 95 now, with a slider/sinker/change. The slider's effective when it's working.
If you're like me, you think "wait, didn't Luis Castillo play for the Twins for awhile?" Yes, he did — that was a DIFFERENT Luis Castillo. The Twins one was a middle infielder and former All-Star/Gold Glover who was with the Twins in 2006/part of 2007. Mid-2007, the Twins traded him to the Metropolitans for Sweet Drew Butera. That experience was so groovy, the Twins later traded Johan Santana to the Mets for gold, frankincense, and myrrh. I don't know what myrrh is and neither do you. Here is the Twins' Luis Castillo:
So, we went to our first Twins game in a few years last week. It was four of us – Mrs. James had been given four free tickets by a season-ticket holder who was gonna be out of town (taking a kid to college). We asked two semi-retired friends if they wanted to come, and they said "sure."
One of those friends has trouble walking long distances, as Mrs. James does. So I asked here if anyone had some suggestions for a parking ramp that was convenient for people with mobility challenges. gintzer provided helpful information, and the parking situation worked out well, ***** ody had to walk too far. Thanks, gintzer!
After the game, we got in the wrong exit line, and were stuck there for awhile. But, not the end of the world. Our car can go into electric mode for situations like that, so we weren't burning gas. We listened to the radio, made jokes about the other cars/drivers, chatted about events in our lives, etc. Just what you'd want with your favorite friends.

The Sereias da Vila have qualified for the 2026 Campeonato Paulista Feminino Play-in. In the 7th and final round of the group stage, Santos FC beat Mirassol 1-0 on Wednesday night (26) at Gabriel Marques da Silva Stadium in Santana de Parnaíba (SP), securing a place in the knockout stage of the state tournament. Santos' goal was scored by top scorer Ketlen.
With the win, Peixe finish the first phase with nine points, two wins, three draws, and two losses. In the Play-in, Alvinegro Praiano will face rivals São Paulo. Before that, however, coach Marcelo Frigerio's side will have a break from matches, as the Paulistão knockout stage begins on November 18 with the first leg. The second leg will be played on the 22nd.

The match – Needing a win to seal qualification, Santos FC started the match on the front foot. Just 15 minutes in, Ketlen latched onto a great long pass from Katrine, burst into the box, and chipped it over goalkeeper Agatha, narrowly missing the crossbar.
Mirassol responded right away and had two chances, but both were denied by fine saves from Taty Amaro. The following minutes saw a tightly contested midfield battle with few opportunities for either side.

The A's jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning when Carlos Cortes smacked a 2-run homer to right. Fast forward to the 5th, with the Twins offense still struggling against lefty rookie Gage Jump, Taj threw 9 pitches and all of them were strikes for the first immaculate inning in Twins history. This was surprising to me, I figured Johan Santana or somebody must have done it before, but I guess not.
Things were still looking great for Taj two outs into the 6th inning, but a single by Lawrence Butler, an RBI double by Tommy White, and an RBI single by Donovan Walton pushed their lead to 4 runs.
The one hit the Twins had in the first 6 innings against Jump was a pop up that landed 5 feet from the pitcher's mound in the 4th. I'm not sure how this is considered a hit, but it does help Royce Lewis' batting average, I guess. In the top of the 7th, Royce got himself a "real" hit with a line drive to left. One out later, Kaelen Culpepper doubled to bring in the Twins first run. Then a Brooks Lee double put two in scoring position for Victor Caratini, who grounded out for an RBI to make it a 2-4 game. The final chance for the Twins tonight came with 2 on and 2 out for Luke Keaschall, but he struck out looking to end the threat.
To add injury to insult, Buxton had to leave the game after appearing to aggravate his hip chasing down a ball in the gap in the 7th inning.
In the standings, the Twins sit at 64-69 and may fall to 3 games back in the wild card hunt. Also, the Royals have won 9 straight somehow.

The Sereias da Vila wrapped up their 2026 Brazilian Women's Championship campaign by beating Vitória 2-1 on Saturday night (22) at Barradão in Salvador, Bahia, in the 17th and final round of the first stage. Santos' goals were scored by Ketlen and Laryh. With the win, Peixe finished the national tournament in 12th place with 23 points, six wins, five draws, and six losses in 17 matches. Now, Marcelo Frigerio's squad shifts its focus to the 2026 Paulista Women's Championship.
Needing a win to secure qualification for the state championship Play-In, Santos FC will host Mirassol next Wednesday (26) at 6:30 p.m. at Gabriel Marques da Silva Stadium in Santana de Parnaíba, São Paulo, in the 6th and final round of the group stage.
Laryh scored the Sereias' second goal at Barradão (Photo: Disclosure/ Santos FC)
The match – Even away from home, the Sereias da Vila started the match setting the tempo in midfield. In less than ten minutes, Peixe threatened twice through Vivian.
The dominance continued and, in the 20th minute, Evelin Bonifácio received the ball on the left and crossed to Ketlen's head. The top scorer in Santos FC history headed firmly into the left corner, giving goalkeeper Ingrid no chance and opening the scoring at Barradão. It was the forward's 210th goal for the club.

Braves reportedly release $125M All-Star, 16-year veteran with World Series experience originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Atlanta Braves are atop the NL East and trying to capture the division for the first time in a few years. Atlanta has been much better this season after what was a disappointing campaign a year ago.
The Braves are still trying to figure out their roster as they make a push toward the postseason. On Sunday, Atlanta picked up a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
"Matt Olson hit a three-run homer to back six strong innings from Bryce Elder, leading the Atlanta Braves past the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep," ESPN wrote.
However, Atlanta also made a roster move Sunday. The Braves granted veteran Carlos Santana his release from Triple-A Gwinnett, allowing him to pursue an opportunity with another team and potentially return to the major leagues.

Since he was designated for **** ignment earlier this season by the Arizona Diamondbacks, Carlos Santana has been biding his time with the Atlanta Braves' Triple-A affiliate, hoping to return to MLB at age 40.
Santana will continue to bide his time outside the Braves' organization. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Braves will grant Santana his release from his minor league contract.
In 27 games with the Gwinnett Stripers, Santana slashed .292/.385/.382.

Santana has played 2,212 big league games in a career that began with the Cleveland Guardians in 2010. He is MLB's active leader in walks (1,332), a skill that still surfaced after he signed a minor league contract with the Braves on June 28.

The Colorado Buffaloes revamped their entire defense over the offseason, and one of the biggest pickups along the defensive line was Tulane transfer Santana Hopper.
Hopper was a force for the Green Wave, propelling them to a College Football Playoff berth. His production last season was enough to give him a spot on Pro Football Network's Preseason All-America First Team.
Hopper was the only Buff to earn any PFN preseason recognition, with him joining Oklahoma's David Stone as the first team's defensive tackle pairing.
With the Green Wave last year, Hopper started in 13 games, finishing the year with 31 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. He was one of the best Group of Six defensive tackles and should be Colorado's top defensive tackle in the event Ezra Christensen does not receive another year of eligibility.
Hopper has one year to play and projects as a critical cog along the CU defensive line, which needs a resurgent season after struggling to stop the run a year ago.

Iowa women's basketball added another name to its 2027 targets as the Hawkeyes offered point guard prospect Santana Sabus.
The 5-foot-9 native of Arvada, Colo., stars for Ralston Valley High School and the Hardwood Elite Adidas 3-Stripes Select AAU program, where she is rated as the No. 4 prospect and No. 1 point guard in the state, according to Prep Girls Hoops' 2027 Colorado rankings.
During her junior season, Sabus averaged 23.7 points on 51% shooting and 35% from 3-point range, along with 10.1 rebounds, 3.9 steals, 3.8 ******* ists, and 1.0 blocks in 24 games, per MaxPreps.
Along with Iowa, Sabus has garnered scholarship invitations from Colorado, Kansas, and Washington State.
Four-star combo guard Jada Seubert is Iowa's only 2027 commit so far, but Sabus joins a group of four other prospects who are still considering the Hawkeyes, including forwards Sienna Williams, Nation Williams, and Destiny Manyawu, and center Khalia Hartwell.

The Diamondbacks are taking a low-risk shot on veteran reliever, signing right-hander Dennis Santana to a minor league deal two weeks after he was designated for ******* ignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Santana was dominant with the Pirates last season, logging a 2.18 ERA in 70 appearances out of their bullpen while converting 16 of 19 save chances. He was not the same reliever this year, pitching to a 6.05 ERA in 41⅔ innings.
Santana has an intriguing connection to the Diamondbacks: He crossed paths in Pittsburgh with Diamondbacks ******* istant general manager Jeremy Bleich, who until December had been the Pirates' director of pitching development.
"Obviously, have history with player, but I think we would do the same move with anyone in this sort of script," Bleich said. "Obviously, the reliever pool is extremely volatile. He was good in Pittsburgh and he had a tough year this year. We have found a few things that are different from last year, so I think in this context anytime you can get a pitcher who has had real success at the major-league level and you can find a specific thing or two that you can try to improve in a short period of time, it's worth the investment in resources to do."
Asked what specifics the organization will try to adjust with Santana, Bleich kept it vague.

The Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, Aug. 4, were set to introduce outfielder Lars Nootbaar, whom they acquired in a trade-deadline deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.
In exchange for the 28-year-old left-handed-hitting Nootbaar, the Diamondbacks gave up Double-A pitchers Daniel Eagen and Sandro Santana along with a player to be named later.
Nootbaar is in the lineup as the designated hitter for Tuesday night's game, hitting sixth.
Nootbaar is hitting just .234/.333/.354 overall but has a .258/.354/.383 line against right-handers. In his career, he owns a .764 OPS with a .341 on-base against righties. His season started late after he underwent surgeries on both of his heels last offseason.
"He missed a lot of time, I know that," manager Torey Lovullo said a day earlier. "So hopefully he hasn't hit his stride yet. And when he comes here, he will."

The trade deadline is one of the most hectic days of the entire regular season for all ball clubs, whether you are a fan of a team that is already looking ahead to the next season for how they can improve or a team that is in the middle of a playoff race and hoping to see October baseball, it's a day where all of us are constantly checking MLBTradeRumors or refreshing our twitter feeds for the next Jeff Passan bomb to grace our timeline.
Coming off a series victory over the Cleveland Guardians where the Dbacks would end up going 10-6 from the start of the 2nd half to the last day before the deadline, there was hope among fans and players on the team that GM Mike Hazen would go ahead and be an aggressive buyer and fill the positional needs this team has shown to be lacking throughout 2026. What we got was…far from the outcome we had been hoping for to say the least.
With today being the last day for teams to make trades before the deadline at 6 PM EST, the notifications from the top baseball reporters were going off all day. We saw nearly every NL playoff hopeful make some kind of move to strengthen their rosters, especially the teams like the Padres, Phillies, Cubs and even Pirates who are all still jockeying for one of the 3 Wild Card spots. There were some rumors about the Diamondbacks being involved in discussions for players like Casey Mize of the Tigers, or Alec Burleson from the Cardinals, but that's where it always seemed to end at just a "discussion" and nothing being finalized.

I sat there watching the time tick away thinking "Alright, (Mike) Hazen will get something done before time is up,let him cook" and kept repeating that to myself, but once the final 10 to 15 minutes approached I got nervous that we might not see anything come to fruition, but right as I had that thought, the news finally came through and the Snakes made a move.
Brandon, Gabe and I planned to have a deadline special episode where we would discuss all the moves that were made for the Diamondbacks and who was dealt for the reinforcements that we were sure were on their way, but like a lot of other online we were quite disappointed to see that the only trade Mike Hazen would be was trading Daniel Eagan (#5 prospect), Sandro Santana (#26 Prospect) and a Player-To-Be-Named-Later (PTBNL) in exchange for Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbar. Noot did miss a good chunk of time to start the season due to injury so his .234/.333/.354 line with 3 HR and 16 RBI might not seem like the most exciting numbers to Dback's fans, but some of his underlying metrics give fans some more hope that he could be a solid addition for a team that is still well in the wild card race.
While the addition of Nootbar does at least improve the roster by bringing in a guy who has a solid walk rate and low chase % (also would mean we have a player who can slot in for Kepler should we hold onto that playoff spot), the Diamondbacks biggest needs going into the deadline was more Starting Pitching an

MIAMI: Liam Hicks of the Miami Marlins looks on against the San Diego Padres in the ninth inning of the game at loanDepot park on July 25, 2026 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Megan Briggs/Getty Images)
Of all the catchers the Rays have traded for in recent years, Liam Hicks stands out because he is a clear upgrade. True, the 27-year-old Toronto native has kicked around since he was drafted by the Rangers in the ninth round of the 2021 draft out of Arkansas State. True, he joins Tampa Bay after hitting only one homer and three extra-base hits in his final 28 games – though he batted .292 – with Miami since being activated from the injured list, which he was placed on due to lower back strain in June.
Tampa Bay is Hicks' fourth organization in six seasons of professional baseball. The lefthanded hitter may stay put for a while. Breaking through offensively the way he has this season -- .282, 14 homers and 62 RBI -- combined with team control through 2030 are reasons why Rays' fans should feel good. Maybe a sigh of relief is in order as well given how the position has chronically underperformed. A larger sigh will be in order when Hicks rediscovers his power stroke again.
In acquiring Hicks, who is making $790,000 this season, the Rays sent three prospects to Miami: 24-year-old infielder Brayden Taylor (Rays' No. 16), 23-year-old RHP Jacob Kisting (No. 26) and 21-year-old shortstop Adrian Santana (No. 27). It marked the second straight day ahead of the trade deadline that Tampa Bay acquired a player for a trio of prospects, neither of whom was ranked higher than No. 15 in their system. The Rays acquired Freddy Peralta from the Mets on Sunday afternoon.
Hicks, who has struck out only 39 times in 354 at-bats and is joining a team that has fanned the fewest times in MLB, replaces Hunter Feduccia (dealt to the Dodgers) as the lefty in the catching platoon with Nick Fortes. He could also spell Jonathan Aranda at first base and give DH Yandy Diaz a break from time to time. Hicks became expendable because Joe Mack, who also hits from the left side and is four years younger, has emerged behind the plate for Clayton McCullough's team.

If you've been a fan of the Washington Commanders for a while, then you've certainly heard of Eastern Motors. You didn't have to live in Northern Virginia to know of Eastern Motors. For over 20 years, Washington players have partnered with Easterns to do commercials ahead of the new season.
Players such as Clinton Portis, Sean Taylor, Santana Moss, Chris Cooley, Kirk Cousins, LaVar Arrington and Terry McLaurin have starred in advertisements. NHL legend Alexander Ovechkin has been a part of the Eastern family, too.
As for McLaurin, he's back to do another commercial for Easterns, now known as Easterns Automotive Group, for 2026. He brought a new partner this time around: rookie linebacker Sonny Styles.
Easterns has multiple locations throughout the DMV, mostly in Maryland. McLaurin and Styles showed up ready for work on Thursday.
In this clip, you hear the famous Eastern Motors jingle in the background as Styles and McLaurin dance. In case you needed a reminder:

The veins in Dennis Santana’s neck stood at attention, pulsing, ready to explode. The pitcher’s eyes were wide and wild. Several of Santana’s teammates had to hold the reliever back from the little guy who’d driven Santana crazy.
That would be Jose Caballero, who, protected by the wall of bodies in a bench-clearing incident with Pittsburgh on Monday, was smiling.
You have to credit Caballero, agitator at large, for the best week of his career. In just a few short days, he managed to annoy the Commissioner’s Office, the Pirates and fans, including a good number of Yankees loyalists.
It’s not a bad haul when your objective is to live in people’s heads.
Everyone agrees Caballero is a rogue character. So do I. But I can’t fault a player who’s trying to help his team win. The key is finding a specific talent and exploiting the **** out of it.

Pittsburgh officially designated right-handed pitcher Dennis Santana for ****** ignment on Thursday, cutting ties with the polarizing reliever.

Santana entered the season as the reliever many thought the Pirates could rely on the most following a 2.18 ERA and 16 saves in 70 appearances last year.

Jace Beck made his Iowa debut and got rocked for five runs on seven hits over three innings. Beck walked two and struck out three. To be fair, the Stripers were once again loaded with major leaguers in the lineup like Ronald Acuńa Jr., Ha-Seong Kim, Carlos Santana, Andrew McCutchen and José Azócar.
The loss went to Andrew Wentz, who allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits over three innings. Wentz struck out five and walked just one.
Catcher Owen Ayers was 2 for 4 with an RBI and one run scored.

Kim Kardashian's boyfriend Lewis Hamilton is stepping in to help her 13-year-old daughter North West, who's determined to become a major star no matter what.
"Kim wants Lewis to be a big part of the kids' lives," reveals a source. "And right now, North is the one who needs the most support because she's throwing herself headfirst into this big showbiz career."
The teenager is gearing up to head out on her first headlining tour, a cross-country run with rapper Molly Santana that kicks off in Dallas on Wednesday, August 5 and ends in Los Angeles on Thursday, August 27 after making stops in New York City, Boston, Chicago and more.
"She's doing incredibly well despite all the negativity she gets online and Lewis is constantly reminding her not to lose sight of that," shares the source. "He loves that she's carving out her own unique path, but of course there are a lot of pitfalls ahead of her and as someone who can see the bigger picture, he can't help wanting to guide her through them."
Hamilton is also very careful not to overstep boundaries, says the source.
