The NBA is in expansion mode.
As well as the would-be franchises in Vegas and Seattle reportedly attracting bids of up to $10bn, commissioner Adam Silver wants the NBA to expand its horizons into Europe.
Across the Atlantic, NBA Europe franchises – and there are going to be at least 12 of them – are fetching bids of at least $500m, potentially up to and beyond $1bn.
There are kinks to iron out there, but Silver sees NBA Europe as his legacy project. One way or another, it is going to happen.
With a 2027 launch date targeted for NBA Europe, the Vegas franchise likely to launch in the 2028-29 season and Seattle soon after, it could be a very lucrative few years for the league.

An estimated 21.5 million additional adults in the United States may now be eligible for statins under updated cholesterol treatment guidelines, according to a new study.
The researchers aimed to estimate how many adults in the US would be considered eligible for statin therapy under the new 2026 blood cholesterol guidelines issued by the American Heart **** ociation, the American College of Cardiology and nine partnering medical societies, compared with the previous 2018 guidelines.
The **** ysis, published July 20 in the journal JAMA, found that the changes could bring the total number of Americans eligible for statins, medications that lower cholesterol, to about 87.5 million people, or more than half of adults ages 30 to 79.
What prompted this major expansion, and does being eligible mean that someone should immediately begin taking medication? The Times is reporting that FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been in talks with private investors about selling stakes in the World Cup. It's a move that would take complete control of the global tournament out of FIFA's hands, and give a seat at the table to private entities with their own agendas. Moreover, the report added that a key figure in brokering these deals is U.S. President Donald Trump, whom Infantino cozied up to during the 2026 World Cup by presenting him with the inaugural FIFA peace prize and then sitting next to the president at games he attended.
FIFA has since confirmed the report, adding that Josh Kushner is positioned to be the lead investor in the plan, should Infantino elect to sell shares in the World Cup. Josh is the brother of Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son in law.
Details of the plan are nebulous, but according to the report, the World Cup would ostensibly be split off from FIFA and into a new corporation, with Infantino as its commissioner as soon as his term as FIFA president ends in 2031. In his role as commissioner of this new company he would oversee the men's and women's World Cup, as well as the Club World Cup — with plans to run tournaments more frequently than every four years. It would be the most staggering pivot in the history of the World Cup, drastically altering the future of the tournament in order to squeeze more money out of the event.
Infantino can't privatize the World Cup unilaterally, requiring the 211 member nations to vote on the proposal. The selling point for these members is that each of them would get a stake in the new company worth approximately $20M — putting a valuation on the entity at $4.22B. If that $20M sum for each nation seems paltry, it's because it is, and it appears that is the plan by design.
Member nations would have the freedom to keep or sell their stakes in the World Cup corporation at their will under the Infantino plan. $20M is a pittance for the richest nations competing in global soccer, but for the dozens of nations dealing with budgetary issues it would enable them to sell out of the World Cup in desperation, putting their stakes in the hands of private ownership. It's easy to envision a scenario where enough FIFA member countries sell their shares for profit to a point where the controlling interest of the World Cup is no longer under the control of a true democratic body, but private equity.

Uefa has reacted furiously to reports Fifa president Gianni Infantino is planning to sell stakes in the men's World Cup to investors.
Infantino is plotting a scheme whereby Fifa would retain majority control of the World Cup and the rest would be sold, partly to each of Fifa's 211 national ******* ociations, and partly to private investment, according to reports by The Times and Financial Times on Tuesday.
The plan could potentially see Infantino installed as the "commissioner" of the World Cup when his Fifa presidency finally ends in 2031, a position which would prove extremely lucrative.
Uefa, the governing body of European football and a long-term critic of Infantino, said in a statement: "This crosses a line that football's governing institutions should never cross.
"UEFA takes it extremely seriously. So should every National Football ******* ociation. So should every stakeholder: leagues, clubs, players, supporters, governments and everyone who cares about the future of the game. The soul and governance of football are not ******* ets to trade - especially with zero transparency as to who gains financially.

Amid the excitement of the 2026 WNBA All-Star celebrations, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced the launch of a Replay Center beginning with the 2027 season, a move intended to address concerns about officiating and on-court safety raised by players, coaches and fans.
"This is one of the most significant investments we've ever made in our basketball operations," said Engelbert during the All-Star pregame press conference on Saturday. "This investment of tens of millions of dollars will help bring greater consistency, efficiency, and transparency to our officiating process, while continuing to improve the quality of the game."
Engelbert shared few details about the project but said that the WNBA will center operations alongside the NBA Replay Center in Secaucus, N.J., where officials will have access to additional camera angles and replay footage to help them make better-informed decisions.

The 2026 college football season is nearly here! On Tuesday, Big Ten Media Days begin in Chicago, marking the unofficial start of the year. This year's event will be three days long, with six schools going on each day. USC is scheduled for the first day.
Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti will kick off the day with his introductory press conference at 8:45 AM Pacific Time Tuesday. He will be followed by the head coaches from USC, Illinois, Rutgers, Penn State, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
Lincoln Riley will be the last head coach of the day to speak. His press conference will be at approximately 10:45 AM Pacific Time. Both Riley and Petitti's press conferences will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
In addition, the Big Ten Network studio set will be having players and coaches on throughout the day. Riley will join the set between 11:15 AM and noon Pacific Time. USC quarterback Jayden Maiava and defensive linemen Alex VanSumeren and Jide Abasiri will be interviewed between 1:00 and 1:30 PM.
USC is heading into its third season in the Big Ten. After going 7-2 in conference play and finishing in fourth place in the league standings last year, the Trojans are hoping to put together an even better campaign in 2026.

CHICAGO ― Player safety, particularly safety from online abuse, has become a dominant topic for the WNBA in the weeks leading up to the 2026 All-Star weekend. Many players understand it's important, but admit there isn't a simple solution.
"It gets harder in this day and age with social media because ... it's hard to censor what people say or protect players in that way when we all have social media. Everybody has access to our pages, DMs, whatever it is," Washington Mystics guard Sonia Citron told USA TODAY.

Charlotte could one day host a Super Bowl, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the city will need more hotel rooms before it can make that happen. Goodell made the comments to Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper on Thursday night.
The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority said the Charlotte region currently has more than 46,000 hotel rooms across 442 properties, including more than 32,000 rooms at 263 hotels in Mecklenburg County. The city's urban core includes nearly 3,900 luxury and upscale hotel rooms.

CRVA Chief Communications and Advocacy Officer Gina Sheridan said attracting a major event like the Super Bowl requires more than just increasing the number of hotel rooms.

"It's about having the right mix of hotels in the right locations to meet the needs of visitors, event organizers, sponsors and media while creating a seamless experience."

You have to credit Caballero, agitator at large, for the best week of his career. In just a few short days, he managed to annoy the Commissioner’s Office, the Pirates and fans, including a good number of Yankees loyalists.
It’s not a bad haul when your objective is to live in people’s heads.
Everyone agrees Caballero is a rogue character. So do I. But I can’t fault a player who’s trying to help his team win. The key is finding a specific talent and exploiting the **** out of it.

On Thursday morning, right before the start of training camp, Tepper Sports & Entertainment rolled out a few exciting milestones for Bank of America Stadium. Not only did the organization solidify a fresh naming rights deal for the venue, but they also released new renderings of their upcoming renovations.
The announcement was celebrated in a "fireside chat" later that evening—and starred team owner David Tepper, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. And given the development of both the stadium and the city, Goodell hinted at Charlotte playing host to a future Super Bowl.
“I think that’s probably somewhere down the line in the future,” Goodell stated, via Forrest Tucker of WBTV. “As far as the Super Bowl is concerned, there is no question that if this city keeps growing the way that it is it’s certainty Super Bowl quality.”
Goodell also wouldn't rule out bringing the NFL draft to town.

It wasn’t the first time Engelbert was greeted with this level of public disdain. According to agent Rich Paul, James has all of the information he needs to make a decision but won't be rushed into one.

The Lone Star Conference’s annual football media day will be held Thursday, July 23 at McKinney ISD Stadium’s Community Event Center in McKinney, Texas.
All 10 football teams — Angelo State, Central Washington, Eastern New Mexico, Midwestern State, Sul Ross State, Texas A&M Kingsville, UT Permian Basin, West Texas A&M, Western New Mexico and Western Oregon — will be represented by their coach and two players.

The Lone Star Conference will begin its 95th season in 2026 with Central Washington set to start its ***** le defense on Saturday, Sept. 5, while the other nine teams scheduled their first games on Thursday, Aug. 27 and Saturday, Aug. 29.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The LPGA on Tuesday unveiled the inaugural Nanea Cup, an event being held in Hawaii next March that includes a mix of pro golfers and collegians as a way to showcase the present and future of women's golf.
The event, which will be held March 11-14 at the Nanea Golf Club in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island, features a $4 million purse. The field will include 95 LPGA Tour players along with 25 of the nation's top college golfers representing five universities: Stanford, Texas, Arkansas, Texas A&M and UCLA.
"As we continue to focus on routing, courses and purses, this event checks every box," LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler said in a statement. "Nanea is a spectacular venue, our athletes will compete for a strong purse, and fans will get their first look at one of the most celebrated golf courses in the world."
All competitors will play Thursday and Friday before the field is cut to the low 50 players and ties. College players who don't make the cut will still play Saturday to help determine team champions.
The Golf Channel will broadcast stories on college athletes and coaches to give a glimpse of the next generation of players.

FBS conferences are divided on the Protect College Sports Act. Count Conference USA as one that supports it.
CUSA Commissioner Judy MacLeod threw her support behind the bill during CUSA Media Day on Tuesday, July 21, in Arlington, TX. She says that while it's "not perfect," it is "desperately needed."
"We understand it's going under revisions now, and some of what we've heard we don't know exactly, but (they) seem like positive changes... It's desperately needed," MacLeod said. "The state law preemption, agent regulation codifying transfer and eligibility regulations, the student athlete protections in there. We've got to have something because it's just not working, and it's not sustainable."

MacLeod's support stems from her frustrations with unclear rules. She believes a federal law that supersedes state laws and various court decisions would make things easier and potentially limit lawsuits that challenge existing or new rules.

This is usually around the time the league goes into hibernation, when coaches and executives take their well-deserved vacations and get away from business for most of August. LeBron is now encroaching on that time as well.
