Joe Root has hailed incoming England Test coach Stephen Fleming as a major reason behind his enthusiasm for leading the side again, saying the former New Zealand captain's vision has left him excited about the team's future.
England confirmed Fleming as their new Test coach earlier this week after parting ways with Brendon McCullum last month. The 53-year-old will officially begin his tenure later this year.

Ohio State is known for its long list of standout wide receivers, and this year's roster will have no shortage of talent. But there's a name that may not be at the top of the list of potential x-factors that could raise the Buckeyes' ceiling even more. According to ESPN, Ohio State freshman wide receiver Chris Henry is labeled as the key x-factor for the Buckeyes' success in 2026.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition is heating up, and no one is backing down on social media from defending who they think should win the job. Through it all, the coaching staff has remained steadfast in their execution of this quarterback competition, while some on the outside consider it already Kyler Murray's job to lose.
However, based on early notes from the first two days of training camp, it seems McCarthy is lacking some early explosiveness in his passing.
ESPN's Kevin Seifert shared his notes from practice on Thursday, July 30, and he hinted that McCarthy is being more conservative while Murray is pushing the ball down the field.
Seifert shared, "Perhaps the biggest takeaway Thursday from the competition between quarterbacks Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy is that Murray is more often pushing the ball downfield. He threw an accurate floater about 45 yards downfield to receiver Dontae Fleming, as well as a deep corner to receiver Justin Jefferson. He also missed tight end T.J. Hockenson down the right sideline."
Reports from others in camp are mixed, but the reports of Murray pushing the ball down the field are consistent. Stephen Fleming always seems to possess a wonderful sense of timing. It was on 12 July that England made the decision to stand down Brendon McCullum as Test head coach and, in serendipitous circumstances, on 13 July that the man they would come to anoint as his successor began his search for a new job. It was nothing more than mere coincidence that the Chennai Super Kings and Fleming mutually parted ways so soon after his former teammate's departure, but within three days he was expressing interest in the England role in a newspaper interview, and within three weeks impressing the ECB interview panel sufficiently for a hasty appointment after Andy Flower had withdrawn himself from consideration for the role.
Not that Fleming will arrive with undue hustle or hurry; Marcus Trescothick will take interim charge of the three Tests against Pakistan this summer before the 53-year-old begins a four-year deal ahead of the tour to South Africa in December. While Fleming has expressed a desire to spend time with his family, it is a curious situation that again highlights the mistake made by the ECB in not taking the opportunity for a clean break after the Ashes.

One might term this, then, a marriage of convenience – a coach in search of a new challenge taking over a team in need of new direction. Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been appointed as England Test coach, with Joe Root returning as captain.
Fleming, 53, has never previously worked as head coach of a national team but he led Chennai Super Kings to a record five Indian Premier League ***** les during his 17-year tenure as head coach.
Previous Test coach Brendon McCullum was fired earlier this month following a string of poor results and several off-field incidents, but remains in charge of England's white-ball sides.

He replaces Julie Masino, who has led Cracker Barrel since November 2023 and will step down from the top role and board on the same date. Masino will stay with the company in an advisory role through October 9 to ******* ist with the transition.

Seven years after she left the National Women's Soccer League as its most prolific scorer, Sam Kerr marked her return to the league with her first goal since rejoining Gotham FC, an equalizer against Portland Thorns.
The Australia striker was her own toughest critic, admitting she did not think much of her overall performance at Providence Park. But her goal in the 62nd minute saw Gotham tie 2-2, adding to goals from Midge Purce, Renee Lyles and Jessie Fleming. Jayden Perry was later sent off for the Thorns.
"I'm obviously happy to score, help the team, but I expect more from myself," Kerr said post-match. "So I wasn't too happy with how I played. Quite disappointing, to be honest.
"I thought we were quite poor today. But we're probably lucky to get away with the tie in the end. I guess I am happy… that we didn't lose."

The Nets lost to Atlanta 83-76 thanks to the Hawks winning the fourth quarter 26-16 thanks to the contributions of players like Kobe Johnson and Zuby Ejiofor. Brooklyn had some standouts in this matchup as center Chaney Johnson went off for 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals while forward Danny Wolf had 20 points and five rebounds.
For the Hawks, Johnson finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four ******* ists coming off the bench while Ejiofor had 13 points and six rebounds. The Nets shot just 8% from behind the three-point line so it was not their strongest long-range shooting game and they also turned the ball over 21 times, allowing Atlanta to keep getting out in transition to score easy baskets.

In the midseason update for the Portland Thorns, there were several key updates.
The major update revolves USWNT megastar Sophia Wilson, CANWNT captain Jessie Fleming, and U-23 forward Pietra Tordin.
“The Thorns are actively pursuing a contract extension for Sophia Wilson, as well as midfielder Jessie Fleming and forward Pietra Tordin (who holds a 2027 player option). All three will be listed on the NWSL’s free agency list until a decision is finalized and announced.”
This is the first time the club has come out with an update for their core and key players.

The Atlanta Hawks were a team of mystery on the first night of the NBA draft, but clues were lying around. The Hawks' needs entering the draft were noticeable. Find a long-term point guard and solve the problems that inevitably led to their season ending against the eventual NBA champions, the New York Knicks. They addressed some of these issues in the first round of the draft with the 8th and 23rd overall picks to kick off a new era of Hawks basketball.
If you had to trust and believe in one small guard to develop and become the future of a franchise, you'd choose Kingston Flemings.
Every trip on the floor, he makes his presence known. The competitive spirit is apparent not just in his play on the floor but also in how he approaches life. A day before the draft, Flemings wrote a letter in The Players' Tribune, **** led "A Letter to NBA GMs," revealing what makes him compete in the way he does and what basketball means to him.
Flemings is a 6-foot-2 guard from the University of Houston who dominated throughout his freshman season. He is a shorter guard in this draft but makes up for it with a wider wingspan. This is very apparent on the defensive side of the floor, where he's able to consistently cause havoc on the ball and in the passing lanes. Rebounding at his size will always be a challenge, but he has the attitude to become an annoying guy for defenses to box out.
There are so many tools for Flemings to develop on the offensive side of the floor at the next level. Averaging 16.1 points per game at 47% from the field, he is a very crafty driver for his size and often used his elite speed to blow past defenders, but showed a variety of moves to get to the rim, avoiding rim protectors. With athleticism as his trump card, he is often able to create his own shot at will in one-on-one situations because of his speed.
