Brian Kelly knows Bryce Underwood's skill set better than most, and the former LSU coach thinks Michigan needs to make some changes.
Kelly recruited Underwood for two years and initially landed his commitment at LSU before the five-star quarterback ultimately flipped to Michigan. After watching Underwood struggle in Michigan's 13-12 Week 1 escape against Western Michigan, Kelly believes the Wolverines need to better utilize their quarterback's athleticism.
"He committed to me at LSU. I recruited him for two years, so I know him very well. He is an elite athlete," Kelly said on The Early Read with Danny Kanell and Roy Philpott on Sirius XM. "I mean, athletically off the charts… He's not a drop-back quarterback that's gonna sit there and read through progressions. He's a half-line guy. You need to keep him on the move. You need to run him. You gotta run this kid. He is big, physical, strong, and fast, and he's tough."

The early non-conference season continues to bring a mixed bag for Northwestern (2-3). At one moment, it seems to thrive and have its way, and at others, it seems lost.
That's exactly what the 'Cats trip to Starkville looked like last week, handing Alabama (3-1) its first loss of the season before being dispatched by Mississippi State (4-1). These contests showed both sides of the coin when it comes to Wildcat volleyball.

It's Lauren Dignan's time. She donned the libero jersey in both contests this week. The Mara Štiglic-Bella Bullington partnership is starting to settle into place. Štiglic led the team with 36 kills while Bullington followed with 26. Simo Valakari is "a happy man" after adding midfielders Josh Campbell and Joel Cotterill to his St Johnstone squad this week.
German forward Danny Schmidt has also been recruited and has obtained a work permit in time for Sunday's Scottish Premiership visit of Hibernian (15:00).

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Pat White's record-setting career at West Virginia two decades ago came full circle Saturday when the school retired his No. 5 jersey.
A ceremony was held before kickoff of the Mountaineers' season opener against Coastal Carolina. The crowd was decked out in white T-shirts and jerseys while West Virginia's players donned white road jerseys and pants, the same combination used 18 years after the school honored White in his final home game on a snowy December night.
White went 35-8 as a starter and established himself as one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks. He is the only starting quarterback in NCAA history to win four bowl games, including the Sugar Bowl against Georgia after the 2005 season and the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma after the 2007 season.
"Twenty years later, they're still talking about what he did and what his teammates did," West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters earlier in the week.
Rodriguez recruited White out of Daphne, Alabama, in 2004. Rodriguez gave him the chance to play quarterback, unlike other schools that wanted him to switch to different positions.

LSU will have several of Detroit's best on campus for Saturday night's opener against Clemson. The group includes Rivals' No. 1 offensive tackle Antijuan Wilkes from Detroit Cass Tech. Wilkes (6-6, 265 pounds) has not been to campus but is looking forward to his first time seeing the Tigers.
"The atmosphere," he said when asked what he is excited to see. "I just want to see how it feels to be in Louisiana. Really just how their coaches are in their first game. I want to see how they coach. I want to see Coach Wolf (offensive line coach Eric Wolford) coach."
Wilkes' teammate Mylan Griggs is a heavily-recruited wide receiver who is due to earn more this fall as he has had two big games as the Technicians new feature-receiver after last year's star C.J. Sadler signed with North Carolina. Michigan, Nebraska, Michigan State and more are pursuing Griggs, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound junior with exceptional body control and ball skills.
"LSU hit me up, and were really excited about getting me down there. So I'm about to go down there and check them out, see what's going on," Griggs said.
Tyler Trusel has also been a standout this season for Brother Rice after playing two seasons of varsity already. Some schools like the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Trusel's frame as a safety but more schools see him at receiver, which is where LSU likes him.

Over the last few recruiting cycles, Notre Dame has become a place that attracts former NFL and college players son's, both legacy's and non.
Larry Fitzgerald, an NFL Hall of Famer, who went to Pittsburgh has his son enrolled, as do multiple former Irish players like the Flanigan family. There could be another football legacy to play in South Bend, and one that might be like the Fitzgerald's as former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram is a big fan of Notre Dame.
He recently said on "The Triple Option" podcast that 9 legacy's on the current roster and 15 during his time, and his son, Mark Ingram III could potentially be playing for Freeman. Ingram said that with him at the helm, the Irish are "right there at the top" of his list of coaches that he wants to play for.
Ingram won the Heisman Trophy in 2009 with Alabama, went on the be a first-round NFL draft selection and played in the NFL for twelve years before retiring following the 2022 season. It is still a few more years until Ingraham's son is ready to be recruited, and if Freeman is still in South Bend, there's a good chance that he ends up playing for Notre Dame.

Motherwell have signed midfielder Dylan Levitt from Leyton Orient for an undisclosed fee.
The 25-year-old, capped 13 times by Wales, has penned a two-year deal at Fir Park with Motherwell holding the option for a further year.
Levitt came through the Manchester United academy and is a familiar face in Scottish football, having previously played for Dundee United and Hibernian.
"Dylan will be a player well-known to our support," Alfred Johansson said.
"We have recruited from leagues across the globe this summer, but bringing someone in who has ample experience in this division is also really important. Dylan has played almost 100 games in the Scottish Premiership, so he knows exactly what's needed.

Newcastle have recruited three midfielders this summer to offset the departures of Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Spurs and ***** nal, but it is rather telling that manager Matthias Jaissle is already a "big fan" of one he inherited.
Jaissle certainly did not think twice about starting Miley against Liverpool on the opening weekend, despite him only playing 45 minutes in pre-season following a spell out with a broken leg.
Newcastle have since signed Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City in a deal worth up to £52m, but the new arrival is expected to complement Miley rather than hinder his progress and the academy graduate looks set to keep his place as he faces Tonali for the first time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (17:30 BST).

On August 18, St. John's announced the signing of 6-foot-10 forward Reed Bailey, coming from Indiana. Entering his fifth collegiate season, Bailey now looks to put the 2025-26 season behind him and rediscover the form that made him one of the more intriguing players in the transfer portal.
Bailey posted 8.3 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 57% from the field last season at Indiana. After playing in a system that didn't maximize his strengths and being asked to play out of position, Bailey could have a much higher ceiling with the Johnnies.
The former three-star recruit comes from an athletic family. His father, Nathan, played basketball at Navy and Pittsburgh, while his mother, Linda, played volleyball at Pittsburgh. His siblings also competed collegiately across basketball and volleyball. Coming from Harvard, Massachusetts, Bailey wasn't heavily recruited, which ultimately led him to Davidson.
Bailey started all 97 games he played during his three seasons at Davidson. In those three seasons, Bailey was named Atlantic-10 Most Improved Player and First-Team All-Atlantic-10 after the 2024-2025 season. With this proven track record, Bailey became one of the premier transfer recruits, ranking 63rd in the portal, right behind future national champion Elliot Cadeau. Indiana ultimately landed Bailey, attracted by his combination of length, fluidity in transition, and ability to consistently threaten defenses around the paint. Within the Wildcats' offense, Bailey was used primarily as a power forward, working off the ball and serving as an off-ball screener.
Between all the high screens and low block movement, Bailey found himself open a lot, where he was fed his points. But Bailey isn't solely an off-ball player. There were plenty of instances where he received the ball at the top of the key and became the focal point of the offense, initiating the possession himself.

Southend United head coach Kieron Dyer says he is embracing the responsibility that management brings after leading his side to three wins from his first three games in charge.
The Shrimpers recruited 10 new players over the summer and currently sit top of an embryonic National League table having picked up maximum points.
Dyer, who was appointed as the club's head coach in June, is in his first managerial role after spells coaching at Ipswich Town and Chesterfield.

As should-be Hall of Fame head coach Bill Belichick prepares for his second season in college with an opening game in Ireland, he was asked if he ever sees himself returning to the NFL.
"I'm focused on UNC right now absolutely," Belichick said, via Brian Murphy of WRAL. "I've recruited these kids, two years with them, been with these guys. I want to help them. I had a great experience in the NFL, but I'm very happy at North Carolina. I'm excited to be there. Excited about the future of our program."
The reality is that Belichick won't have a chance to return to the NFL unless someone wants him. Through three hiring cycles since the Patriots fired Belichick, he has had one interview.
This year, with 10 openings, his name never came up. Last year, the Raiders and Tom Brady hired Pete Carroll without taking a serious look at Belichick.
It's difficult if not impossible to imagine Belichick back in the NFL. No fan base is clamoring for him. No front office will want to work with him. No owner will become smitten with the notion that he'll turn an also-ran into a champion.

SEC presidents approved stiff penalties to deter schools from signing players with pro experience, with one notable school sitting out: LSU.
LSU abstained from Wednesday's vote on penalties, a source familiar with the vote confirmed. That came a day after the school was part of a unanimous, 16-0 vote to enforce rules against fielding athletes who dropped out of pro leagues.
LSU football coach Lane Kiffin has recruited at least two players made NCAA eligible by a Louisiana court injunction, and LSU men's basketball coach Will Wade was pursuing another player.
Neither Kiffin, Wade nor LSU's administration has offered public comments since the Tuesday night announcement by the SEC that it would enforce the bans against pros. As per a new report that has surfaced after Hayden Panettiere's unfortunate demise, the actress suffered from physical pain during her final days. Not only that, she banned her ex-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, from attending her book signing. For those unversed, first responders reportedly found the "Heroes" alum unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at an Airbnb residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Despite the medical team's best efforts to resuscitate her, doctors declared Panettiere dead on August 16 at 2:32 p.m.
As per a new report by The New York Times, the late Hayden Panettiere suffered from excruciating pain, likening it to "pins and needles" in her legs during her final days. Moreover, she also gave Barnes & ****** le "clear instructions" to keep her ex-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, "away" during the Manhattan book tour in May. For that reason, the "Nashville" star had also recruited private security.
According to TMZ, his brother, Zach, reportedly was the one who walked in and found Panettiere unresponsive in a chair in the living room.
The Hickerson brothers called 911, and an emergency medical team arrived at 1:50 p.m. Unfortunately, they failed to save Panettiere, and doctors declared her dead at 2:32 p.m. At the time, South Carolina Police announced that they suspected no foul play, and the initial autopsy reportedly revealed no signs of trauma before the actress's death.
The actress detailed her troubled relationship with Hickerson in her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," released in May. Panettiere spoke about his alleged harsh behavior towards her, which had resulted in three detentions and jail time for her.

Ralph Sampson is kind of overlooked, if not forgotten today, but he was sort of the original Wemby, minus the three-point shooting, and he was a much better athlete than Victor Wembanyama is.
At Virginia, the 7-4 Sampson was a revelation. He was very thin, but was immediately dominant in the ACC, and he made Virginia a very tough out.
He made a great impression on many people, including a young Michael Jordan. Jordan was recruited by Duke, NC State and UNC, where he of course ended up, but at one point, Jordan very much wanted to team up with Sampson at Virginia.
For whatever reason, then-coach Terry Holland didn't make a big push. In fairness, Jordan was a late bloomer who was famously cut as a high school sophomore. People knew he was special by the end of his junior year, but by then it was probably too late for Virginia.
For a moment though, imagine what might have been. UNC won a **** le during his freshman year. With Sampson and Jordan, Virginia might have won two or three, and arguably could have pulled off an undefeated season or two.

A Nazareth, Pennsylvania native, Peyton Falzone was originally committed to Penn State's 2026 recruiting class, but he opted to flip his commitment to Auburn last summer. He remained in the Tigers' class until December 3, 2025, two days before Matt Campbell was officially announced as Penn State's football coach. For a moment in time, Falzone and Jackson Ford were the only two members of the Nittany Lions' 2026 class.
Falzone was recruited as a quarterback, but during fall camp, the coaching staff has him transitioning to tight end. He has added some muscle this offseason and has been working with the tight end coaches:
Moving back to quarterback in the future is still on the table, but the coaching staff clearly sees another way he can contribute to the team right now. Falzone is unlikely to see much playing time this season with a logjam at tight end, though the future looks bright.

It has been reported for a while that BYU was the frontrunner to land Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler, and now it is official, as he committed to the Cougars on Thursday, according to On3's Joe Tipton.
Kohler had a Zoom meeting with Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats coaching staff on Wednesday, but BYU ultimately won out.
The decision makes sense for Kohler, as he could not return to Michigan State because the Spartans had a full roster. Instead, he decided to return to his home state of Utah and become a Cougar.
Pope previously recruited Kohler out of high school when he was at BYU, but Michigan State ultimately won out. Pope tried to recruit him again this offseason, but he was unsuccessful in landing the 6-foot-10, 245-pound forward.
Kentucky fans likely will not have to worry too much about playing against Kohler or BYU, as the most likely way the two teams would meet would be during the NCAA Tournament.

When Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin traveled down to Charlotte for the ACC Kickoff event last month, he did lots of media interviews. In one of those interviews, Franklin was asked about one player on offense and one on defense who had impressed him over the offseason.
Defensively, Franklin named redshirt junior defensive lineman Aycen Stevens. Franklin has known Stevens and his family for a while. The 6-foot-5, 264-pounder is the younger brother of former Penn State quarterback Tommy Stevens. Franklin recruited Tommy Stevens out of Indianapolis and coached him for four seasons from 2015-18. During that time, Aycen was a little boy with a unique nickname.
"Well, first of all, I didn't know who Aycen was," Franklin said last week regarding Stevens. "For us, it was Tank. Did you guys know that? So like, from the time he was little, it was Tank. We recruited Tommy, and there was this little kid who had a mullet, sitting on the couch or sitting at the dinner table. It's funny, when we got here, I said to my wife, 'Do you remember Tommy Stevens' little brother? She goes,' You mean Tank?' She knew right away. So, it's cool we got history with that family."
Back in the spring, defensive coordinator Brent Pry, who recruited Aycen to Blacksburg as head coach three years ago, was effusive in his praise. Franklin shared that enthusiasm.
"He's had a great offseason. He's one of these guys that was on the roster that people felt good about, but I will say that his improvement from the time we showed up until now is significant. He is fast; he is strong. I think he had a really productive spring. I think he's had a really productive summer. I think one of the things for him, like a lot of these players, is they're watching social media, they're watching college football, the NFL, and they see what different players, different defensive ends, are doing and how they're successful. That's important, but at the end of the day, you gotta know you, and you gotta play to your strengths. And I think that's what Aycen, Tank, did this spring."

The start of the 2026 high school football season is nearly here, and several FSU Seminoles commits had impressive showings over the weekend in their final preseason action.
Three-star athlete commit Chayse Brown is being recruited as someone who could play on either side of the ball for the Seminoles, and he showcased his ability as a wide receiver on Friday for Lennard High School in their exhibition against Osceola.
In the first clip he posted on social media, Brown was able to beat the cornerback and make a tough catch for about a 30-yard gain with the safety closing in. He did not have to do nearly as much in the second clip, with the defense leaving him wide open in the end zone for a short touchdown catch as Lennard won 68-0.
Brown is a member of FSU's 2028 recruiting class and committed to them back in June, shortly after they offered him a scholarship following a great showing at a camp they hosted in Tallahassee. They are recruiting him as a wide receiver and a defensive back.
He is ranked as the No. 611 overall player and No. 51 athlete in the 247Sports composite. The Ruskin product is also the No. 79 player from Florida.

The UCLA Bruins brought in Bob Chesney to elevate the football program to a point where the team is competing at the highest level. A great way to move towards that is to become the best team in the city that you're in.
UCLA football certainly hasn't been better than USC since the turn of the century, and it's been even worse for the Bruins since the turn of the century. USC will be good again this year but Lincoln Riley has been even better off of the field, landing several top-of-the-line recruiting classes.
So when might Chesney and the Bruins be able to compete consistently against USC? Maybe pretty soon. Trojans Wire writer Matt Zemek voiced his belief that things can change quickly in the world of college football.
"When UCLA kicked USC up and down the field in 2023, we all saw why that happened. D'Anton Lynn's UCLA defense swarmed USC's tissue-soft offensive line and blew up the Trojans' backfield again and again. UCLA was the far more physical team that day. The Bruins were physical with USC last season and were therefore able to push the Trojans even though they had far less talent," Zemek said. "UCLA under Bob Chesney should be able to play with the physicality needed to beat USC. Given that Chesney has recruited well and shows promise as someone who can develop his players, that's all UCLA really needs to match and then exceed USC. It all goes back to Chesney being half as good for UCLA as Curt Cignetti has been for Indiana. If Chesney is even remotely close to the Cignetti standard, UCLA will run LA barring a Lincoln Riley renaissance in which his offenses start putting up 55 points a game the way he did at Oklahoma."
Cignetti may be the best coach in the sport but Chesney even earning comparisons to the reigning national champion head coach is a good sign in Westwood.

WARSAW (AP) — A Russian plan to kill a Ukrainian American citizen in Warsaw was thwarted by Poland before it could be carried out, the Polish prime minister said Thursday, adding it was the first time that "someone on the order of Russia" sought to attack a U.S. citizen on the territory of another NATO country.
Western officials have previously warned that Russia stepped up a campaign of targeted killings since President Vladimir Putin's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, saying they have disrupted several plots across Europe. But Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this incident was unprecedented.
The suspect, who was allegedly recruited by Russia's secret services, was detained by Polish authorities on Aug. 7. He will be held in custody for three months, the Warsaw police said in a statement.
The American Ukrainian citizen "was uncomfortable for the Putin regime," Tusk said in a news conference, without elaborating.
The operation was carried out in cooperation with U.S. services, said Tomasz Siemoniak, Poland's minister overseeing intelligence services. He said the targeted victim was a U.S. citizen "of Ukrainian origin." Officials did not immediately provide further details.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) - Rick Renfro couldn't hold in the tears when his son, Jake, committed to Illinois in January of 2026.
Rick Renfro played for the Illini in the 1980s, winning a Big Ten ******* le in '83, and playing in the '84 Rose Bowl.
Now, Jake Renfro joins U of I football for his seventh and final year of college football, transferring in from Wisconsin. Like his father, Jake plays offensive line. He is projected to start at center for Illinois.
"I sat and cried," Rick said regarding his reaction when he found out Jake would play for Illinois.
Rick says then-Illini head coach Lovie Smith recruited Jake, out of Mokena, Ill., a little bit in high school. Then, when Jake entered the transfer portal to depart from Cincinnati, following the 2022 season, Bret Bielema reached out. However, Jake opted to follow head coach Luke Fickell as he made the move from Cincinnati to Madison.
