Despite having a strong young roster and a new front office regime, in place the future outlook for the Atlanta Falcons is pretty bleak, at least according to the national media.
ESPN has come out with their annual future power rankings list for all 32 NFL teams, and the Falcons are near the bottom - coming in at No. 27 on their list. They ranked 21st in overall roster strength not including QB, 31st at quarterback, 17th in coaching and 24th in front office.
The worst of it is that they see no change coming on the horizon. ESPN included this dire bold prediction for Atlanta: they won't make the playoffs through the 2029 season.
"The Falcons will not make the playoffs from 2027 to 2029. Atlanta needs a quarterback, but the current team isn't bad enough to land a top-two pick. The Falcons could draft one next year, but they might have to give up some serious capital to trade up. And though there are building blocks on this team, I fear the Falcons could be caught in the middle -- even in the NFC South." -- Seth Walder, ESPN
The good news is that it's impossible to see that far into the future with any accuracy. If the Falcons were to trade for or sign or draft a perfectly-average starting quarterback some time in the next couple of years they would instantly be considered the favorites to win the NFC South - and the playoff spot that comes with it.

The news that the Seahawks and cornerback Devon Witherspoon reached agreement on a contract extension over the weekend was celebrated in Seattle and it caught the attention of many people in New England as well.
Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is also in the market for a new deal and a common reaction to Witherspoon's extension was that it paves the way for Gonzalez to get his own contract situation settled. Gonzalez has not been practicing for the last week, which the Patriots have said is due to a physical issue and head coach Mike Vrabel said on Monday that he thinks the corner's case is not directly tied to Witherspoon.
"Everything is pretty unique to itself," Vrabel said. "Whether that's negotiations, players, the play that we're running — certainly those are unique and individual situations. We'll try to focus on Christian's and I know he'll focus on his own situation. We'll continue to work through that and he'll continue to try to improve and try to get back out on the field."
Gonzalez and Witherspoon share an agent, so there's some link between the cases of two players who will wind up at the top of the pay scale at the position even if it might not be as easy as dominos falling one after another. For now, though, Gonzalez remains off the field as the Patriots prepare for their Week 1 trip to see Witherspoon and the Seahawks.

Sonny Styles made his NFL debut in the Commanders preseason opener against the Dolphins on Friday night. The seventh overall pick started the game but played just one series before being held out for the rest of the game. In that series, the Commanders defense struggled to stop the Dolphins as Miami drove 93 yards down the field on a 14-play touchdown drive. Some fans have been quick to jump on Styles and be extremely critical of his performance, which is obviously silly given the context. But as such, I thought I'd take a closer look at how Styles played.
Run Game
In the run game, Styles had a few ups and downs but was largely pretty solid. There were a few plays I saw people online being critical of when actually Styles did exactly what he was meant to do.

Nick Reiner has been blocked from accessing his $1.5 million trust fund.
As the 32-year-old prepares for his pretrial hearing, he and his legal team have requested to use the blocked account in order to cover court fees and commissary costs so he can buy "basic necessities" like socks and hygiene products. In the initial petition, he claimed he had not yet received the distribution that was supposed to be allocated when he turned 30.
In the latest development, the previous and incoming fiduciaries set to oversee the trust, Paul Kanin and Jodi Pais Montgomery, have denied his wish, citing California's "slayer statute."
The law prevents individuals from inheriting money or property from a person they "feloniously and intentionally" kill.
In court documents, new trustee Montgomery stated the upcoming trial will decide his access to the trust fund. She said "no distribution should be made until the Court resolves whether" the slayer statute is applicable in Nick's case.

When Colorado opens the college football regular season, it may do so without head coach Deion Sanders. The 59-year-old Sanders was reportedly subpoenaed to testify in court as part of his son Shilo's bankruptcy trial, according to USA Today.
That trial is expected to begin Aug. 31 and last roughly five days, potentially taking it through Sept. 4. Colorado opens its season against Georgia Tech on Sept. 3.
The judge presiding over the case, Judge Michael E. Romero, noted the potential conflict for Sanders during a pretrial conference attended by USA Today. Romero added that, due to the game, Sanders would likely fight the subpoena.
"I'm also concerned there's a game: CU's first game is that same week," Judge Romero said on the Zoom conference, which also was attended by USA TODAY Sports. "So I can see that coming. I am not a CU alum or I have no ties to CU. So I don't care. But I'm just recognizing that is a potential issue."
It's unclear whether Sanders has been served the subpoena yet. Romero merely noted that the subpoena had been issued.

The throne is vacant; it's time to crown a new king.
The 2026 regular season has officially reached its conclusion, and we now know (well, we had a pretty good idea already) the six teams that will battle to raise the trophy just over one month from now at Sports Illustrated Stadium. As for this past weekend, the Waterdogs got their bye, the Outlaws may have gotten their goalie back, and the Redwoods' offense bounced back with a message to their Western Conference opponent.
Here's the Week 13 Wrap-Up:
Speaking of new kings, let's start with CJ Kirst, who set the single-season goal record with this effort against the New York Atlas on Saturday afternoon.

Cue the aghast sounds from Tottenham Hotspur's fan base. According to Nizaar Kinsella at the BBC, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus have come to an agreement for the transfer of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The deal is apparently a season-long loan with a purchase option — not obligation — in the amount of €8.6m (£7.3).
I'm not wild about this deal and here's why: Vicario has two years left on his initial five year contract when he signed for Spurs for £16.25m in 2023. While the loan almost certainly has a loan fee and the option of £7.3m would represent at minimum Spurs breaking even from an accounting standpoint on what they paid for Vicario, the loan gives Juventus a convenient excuse to back out of the deal by crying poverty, or at minimum an opening to renegotiate the option to something even lower. If Juve backs out of the deal suddenly Spurs are left next summer with a disgruntled Italian keeper in the last year of his contract and a significantly reduced transfer value. It sucks.
I was hoping for an obligation — get Juventus on the hook to pay SOMETHING real at the beginning of next summer for a player that Roberto De Zerbi clearly does not have in his plans. But I guess it's better than nothing — Googly Elmo gets to return to his homeland and since Spurs aren't in Europe they can pretend he doesn't exist for a year. But while Spurs have been undoubtedly much better this summer at getting unwanted players out the door for whatever price they can manage, I can't say I'm happy with this particular deal.

Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason will be working from a new spot for the rest of the preseason.
Mason tore multiple ligaments in his knee when he was involved in a sideline collision during the team's first preseason game and has been working at the team's practices using a large brace. Head coach Shane Steichen indicated that he is passing on having surgery for now, but the team will have him coach from a booth upstairs for their two remaining games this summer.
"He's pretty tough," Steichen said, via Joel A. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. "Obviously, he's back out here in a brace. I think, right now, he's going to let that thing heal. He has some serious injuries, which is wild, but he's going to be up in the box for these next two preseason games, just for precautionary reasons."
Steichen said that Mason wants to remain on the sideline, but the head coach feels there's too much risk to have that happen in the next few weeks.

The Seattle Seahawks recently announced their intention to sign free-agent cornerback Terrion Arnold. The former first-round pick was released by the Detroit Lions after news surfaced that he'd be facing eight felony charges for kidnapping and robbery with an armed weapon. **** uming Arnold ends up joining the Seahawks, he'll fill an immediate need that was exposed in Week 1 of the preseason.
The Seahawks were defeated 17-7 by the Dallas Cowboys. Predictably, the cornerback depth was exposed. Depth behind Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe has been questioned by fans all offseason long, and Arnold would represent a pretty big upgrade.
Shemar Jean-Charles especially struggled, allowing four receptions on five targets for 78 yards and a touchdown, per Pro Football Focus. Rookie Michael Dansby was also tagged with allowing a touchdown in coverage. Fellow rookie Andre Fuller gave up three catches on three targets.
The Seahawks do not have in-house solutions should Witherspoon or Jobe be sidelined with injury for any amount of time. If the Arnold signing is finalized amidst his off-field legal troubles, the Seahawks will have a depth cornerback they can rely on (at least on the field). The preseason exposed an issue we knew Seattle had, and Arnold could address that issue.

Fernando Alonso has said the algorithms dictating 2026 F1 cars' energy deployment must be "fixed and improved," amid continuing driver frustration with the new generation of power unit regulations.
Under the 2026 rules, the cars' power delivery is split nearly 50/50 between electrical power and internal combustion, with a 'self-learning' computer algorithm critical to deciding how the battery deployment is used throughout a lap and constantly adapting to inputs from the driver.
With deployment already mapped out by software before the race, drivers are unable to 100% control deployment themselves, a quirk of the 2026 cars that has come under criticism from several drivers this season.
Speaking after the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps, arguably the most difficult track for the 2026 cars so far, McLaren's Oscar Piastri lamented a "pretty ***** way of going racing." He said: "It sucks. I can't really say it any other way than that. I certainly wouldn't have been the only person [to complain]."
Piastri added: "When you've got qualifying grids decided by computers behaving or misbehaving, it's a pretty ***** way of going racing."

Travis Kelce's recent comment about his wedding to Taylor Swift has reportedly sparked fury among their guests, who were required to sign NDAs. Kelce recently gushed over his wedding to the pop star, called it the "best night of my life," and described the festivities as a "crazy night." Guests are reportedly furious that they have been asked to keep quiet. However, the Chiefs player is not holding back and is discussing private details in the media.
As per RobShuter, wedding guests are reportedly frustrated that Travis Kelce can openly discuss intimate wedding details with Taylor Swift, while they are bound by NDAs. One guest lashed out, saying: "So the bride and groom are allowed to talk about it, but we aren't? It feels like there's always one rule for Taylor and another for everyone else."
Another guest chimed in, stating: "Taylor and Travis can decide when to release details, photos or video because it's their wedding. But everyone else is expected to pretend they weren't even there."
However, a third guest explained that the intention of the NDA was not to silence the wedding guests but to allow the couple to tell their story at their time. In fact, Kelce has simply gushed over the wedding festivities and has not really shared any private information.
The source dished: "It's Taylor and Travis' wedding — of course they get to tell their own story. They're the ones who got married. If they want to share memories from the night, that's their choice. The NDA was there to protect their privacy, not silence the couple."

The Oscar-winning actress was presented with the honour by her The Devil Wears Prada director, David Frankel, amid The Disney Legends Award ceremony held in Anaheim, California.
"I am here today because I'm one of the most insanely lucky people in the world," she began, appearing emotional. "How lucky am I that I was born into a family where acting, storytelling and imagination were valued and celebrated."
Anne, who is currently expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, went on to credit late director Garry Marshall, as well as co-producers Debra Martin Chase and the late Whitney Houston, for selecting her to play Mia Thermopolis in the hit 2001 movie, The Princess Diaries.
She also thanked the team behind the 2006 comedy-drama, The Devil Wears Prada, including co-stars Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt.

I got to be with Stanley Tucci. I got to be with Emily Blunt. I got to be with um...oh what's her name," the 43-year-old continued, pretending to forget Meryl. The Philadelphia Eagles knew they had something to work with when they drafted Jeremiah Trotter Jr. If nepotism alone worked out in their favor, he'd be pretty special. They also knew his path to a prominent role wouldn't necessarily be immediate. That seems prophetic now, but patience is being rewarded.
Trotter has spent training camp consistently finding his way around the football, making plays as a run defender and blitzer while showing the instincts that made him such an intriguing prospect coming out of the Clemson Tigers program. With first-round pick Jihaad Campbell alongside established starter Zack Baun, Trotter has another hurdle to clear before becoming a full-time contributor. Still, so far, he has made that decision a lot harder to stand on.
Camp has provided plenty of evidence that Trotter is ready for more responsibility. He has shown up repeatedly in run-defense periods. He has found creases as a blitzer, and he has played with the kind of downhill aggression the Eagles want from their linebackers. That production carried into Philadelphia's preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens. One can argue that Trotter was the best player that the Eagles put on the field.
He was especially active early, recording five tackles before halftime and delivering a delayed blitz that resulted in a sack of Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley. He didn't play the entire game, but he didn't need to. The Eagles got another valuable glimpse of what he can offer when given meaningful opportunities. What's becoming increasingly interesting is the company around him. Campbell received two early series alongside Trotter and continues to show why Philadelphia invested heavily in him.
Baun remains the veteran leader of this corps and one of the defense's most dependable players. Still, rather than allowing that depth to bury Trotter, the competition appears to be bringing out his best football. That's exactly what the Eagles should want. Trotter doesn't need to become a starter overnight to have value. A defense playing deep into the postseason needs linebackers who can step onto the field without creating a noticeable drop-off.

Aug. 16—SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Fifteen years before Gonzaga transformed into an undisputed college basketball power, the small Jesuit university in Spokane made a brief flicker on the national stage with a standout point guard from a high school just down the street.
Gonzaga Prep's John Stockton captured WCAC Player of the Year in 1984, earned all-conference honors in consecutive seasons and was selected 16th overall by the Utah Jazz in the 1984 NBA draft. Chances are you know the rest of the story.
Stockton's Naismith Hall of Fame induction call came in 2009, six years after the NBA's all-time ****** ists leader wrapped up a distinguished, record-setting career with the Utah Jazz and 25 years removed from his final game in a Zag uniform.
But would the point guard ever have company in Springfield, Massachusetts? The odds of another Gonzaga induction always seemed low. Lightning usually doesn't strike twice for a midmajor school in a small-market city like Spokane, but Stockton was always willing to make room if somebody else ever came along.
"It's unbelievable and special. What are the chances?" Stockton said Friday, 24 hours before Gonzaga coach Mark Few officially joined him in the pantheon of college and professional basketball as a newly enshrined Hall of Famer. "You look back 30, maybe 40 years ago and you would've never thought any of this could happen. So it's pretty exciting for all of us."

Scottie Scheffler had a fair share of close calls this year, but not Sunday in the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
He shot a final-round 4-under-par 66 and pulled away to win the tournament and extend his lead in the FedEx Cup playoffs in Memphis, Tenn.
"I felt like a week like this was coming," Scheffler said. "I felt like I was on repeat all year just being like, hey, I'm playing solid. I'm close. It feels good to be answering some different questions at the end of this week."
Scheffler is the World No. 1 golfer, but this marked his first victory since January, so it was his second triumph of 2026.
"I have had some close calls this year," Scheffler said. "I feel like I kept saying at the end of each tournament that I feel like I am playing pretty good, it's just little things that aren't going my way."

The lopsided pitching matchup didn't materialize, but it turned out not to matter, as big bats beat big arms.
As he crossed into more innings than he had pitched all of last season (134) Sean Burke had his worst start since June 13, giving up four earned runs on five hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings that took him 72 pitches. His velocity was off a couple of ticks and his command wasn't terrific, either. The first and biggest blow was a two-run triple in the second on Brett Callahan's first major league pitch. Callahan then was knocked in on a Max Clark single to make it 3-0 (Callahan's next time up he was called out on strikes by home plate umpire Adam Beck on a clear ball, but his attempt at a challenge was declared too late by Beck, who had a terrible day overall.)
The Sox got one run back on a Tristan Peters opposite-field pop-up ground-rule double (those corners in Comerica are really short) and two grounders. The Tigers got it back to 4-1 on an opposite-field homer off Sam Antonacci's glove by Colt Keith in the third, then in the fifth they learned why the dreaded leadoff walk is so dreaded: Tigers starter Drew Anderson, at his highest pitch count all year, pinned Peters down 0-2 then threw four straight ****** , followed by a slider that didn't slide that Drew Romo slid 386 feet to right to make it 4-3.
A Randal Grichuk pinch-double and Colson Montgomery broken-bat single in the sixth tied the game. Next, Tigers lefty reliever Todd Holton again proved the dreaded-leadoff-walk rule by giving Antonacci (who doesn't hit lefties well) a five-pitch pass and following that by setting one on a tee for Munetaka Murakami, only to see it land 393 feet away. Make it 6-4, White Sox.
The Tigers cut it to 6-5 in the seventh when Dillon Dingler broke an 0-for-29 slump with a double to score Gleyber Torres, at which point Mune proved he's not just another pretty bat:

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Scrumhalf Noah Hotham will join the All Blacks in South Africa ahead of Saturday's first test as cover for injured halves Cortez Ratima and Cam Roigard.
Ratima suffered a knee injury during New Zealand's most-recent match against the Bulls in Pretoria while Roigard has yet to play on tour because of a calf injury.
Hotham was a contentious omission from the All Blacks' original 44-man touring squad as the selectors opted instead for his Crusaders understudy Kyle Preston.
Prop Ollie Norris also has been ruled out of the tour with a knee cartilage injury. Norris will return to New Zealand, and a prop replacement is set to be named in due course.
The South Africa tour has exacted a heavy injury toll before the first of four test matches between the world champion Springboks and second-ranked All Blacks.

Bangladesh produced a historic performance in Darwin, defeating Australia by nine wickets in the first Test to secure their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil. The defeat brought Australia's long run of consistency under scrutiny, but Steve Smith was quick to acknowledge Bangladesh's superior performance while insisting that one poor Test does not change Australia's status as the world's top-ranked Test side.

"Pretty simple: we were outplayed. I thought Bangladesh bowled really well the first morning, really disciplined. Our batters probably weren't disciplined enough," Smith said after the defeat, as quoted by The Daily Star.
Australia struggled with the bat across both innings. After being bowled out for 198 in their first innings, they were forced to concede a massive 228-run lead after Bangladesh piled up 426. Smith, who scored 71 in the first innings, admitted that Australia failed to capitalise when their batters got starts.

"They got too many in front, and we weren't able to catch it up yesterday on what was a pretty decent wicket to bat on. A couple of us got starts and didn't go on with it. Greeny, I thought, played really nicely to get a hundred, but he didn't have any partners to go with him," he said.

Cameron Green provided Australia with some resistance in the second innings, scoring a fighting 104, but the hosts were eventually dismissed for 284. Bangladesh were left with only 57 runs to chase for victory.
Despite the heavy defeat, Smith backed Australia to bounce back and urged the team not to overreact to what he described as a poor week.

"I hope it's one bad week. We're the number one team for a reason. We've played really good, consistent cricket over a long period of time, and this week was a bit of a blip," Smith said.

The experienced batter also gave full credit to Bangladesh for their performance throughout the four-day contest.

"We could have done things a lot better, but credit goes to them for the way they played throughout these last four days," he added.
Australia were bowled out for 198 after Hasan Mahmud's stunning 6/55, before Bangladesh piled on 426, led by centuries from Tanzid Hasan and strong knocks from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Josh Hazlewood took six wickets and reached 300 Test wickets.

Cameron Green's 104 helped Australia fight back in the second innings, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz's 5/66 and Hasan Mahmud's three wickets restricted them to 284.

It was a pretty typical preseason opener. We didn't see many starters; some rookies stood out, and other veterans are still trying to find their places on the roster. The score didn't matter much, but it was still quite rewarding to see the 2026 Kansas City Chiefs take the field for the first time against another NFL team.
Early returns on the rookie class were largely positive, but there were some depth concerns exposed on both sides of the ball. We won't remember much about this game, but some of these guys certainly left impressions that could have significant implications on the initial roster.
Here are a few who stood out as the Los Angeles Rams beat the Chiefs 20-12 on Saturday afternoon.
Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier: When the team drafts a quarterback late in the seventh round, there are no real expectations for success. But through one performance, they might be ratcheting up for Nussmeier. Working under pressure much of the time, the LSU kid looked poised and creative. He used his quick release and surprising throw-on-the-run ability to make plays against the Rams.
Wide receiver Cyrus Allen: It wasn't the most efficient debut for rookie Cyrus Allen, as he hauled in just two of his five targets. But the hype train gained some significant steam when he climbed the ladder to convert on 3rd and 8. It's the type of play we've been wanting to see from Chiefs receivers for a long time — aggressive, strong hands, attacking the football.

A Virginia man's anti-police license plate is at the center of what could be a landmark First Amendment case, following a federal appeals court ruling in his favor last month.
Virginia motorist Curtis M. Whateley says he has a free speech right to keep his customized license plate, which reads "FTP&ATF," an abbreviation that foul-mouthed puzzle-solvers will decipher as "Fuck the police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms." The State of Virginia argues that it has the right to revoke Whateley's plate because license plates are government-owned, not a public soapbox. The state says it's going to take its case to the Supreme Court.
The case highlights a niche, often amusing, but still consequential issue in First Amendment law: whether a vanity license plate is private or government speech.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that Texas could deny a group's application for a specialty license plate design showing the Confederate flag. Most U.S. district courts and state courts interpreting the decision have held that, while government-run vanity plate programs are a nonpublic forum, the specific character combination of the plate is private speech, which restricts the government from censorship based on viewpoint.
But until the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit issued an opinion on Whateley's case on July 31, no federal appeals court had ruled on the matter, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia (ACLU-VA), which is representing Whateley. The three-judge panel unanimously found Virginia's personalized license plate messages are private speech subject to First Amendment protection.
